Well known Greendale Butchers Matt and Bronwyn Dering are no strangers to awards and have done it again with a Gold win for their Pepperoni Biersticks.

‘The Devro Great New Zealand Sausage Competition’ awards were held Thursday, October 13th at the Auckland Fresh Factory. With 500 sausages judged, Matt and Bronwyn, owners of Greendale Butchery were extremely proud to have taken a Gold Medal for their

Pepperoni Bierstick.

“We are a small family owned butchery based in Greendale, specialising in manufacturing small goods, bacon and home kill in the Selwyn area,” Bronwyn explained.

“Our Pepperoni Biersticks are a blend of beef and pork, Manuka smoked and made with top quality ingredients and they are gluten free.

“Our products are available from the Lyttelton Farmers Market, as well as on site at Greendale.

“Needless to say I am very proud of our small team and all the hard work they put in to produce top quality products through and through,” Bronwyn said.

“We have won awards in previous years, for our sausages, bacon and ham, so it’s wonderful to be able to continue the tradition,” she added.

This competition, now in its twenty third year, has been running in various forms since 1994 and is well established as an annual highlight for butchers

and small goods manufacturers.

There are twelve categories in the competition ranging from traditional flavoured to gourmet. Once entered, all of the entries were sent to the Retail Meat New Zealand offices to be sorted and then judged anonymously, within their categories. Each sausage was judged by at least two judges and an average score was

taken from these. Gold, bronze and silver medals were then awarded for the marks received. From there, the sausages which received the top mark in each category were re-judged against each other to find the Supreme Award Winner, which this year went to Mangawhai Meat shop with their Chicken, Lime and Lemongrass.

A large country garden brimming with rhododendrons, azaleas and treasures, is ready to delight crowds for the much looked forward to Oxford Country Garden Fete. The Fete, which is now in its fifth year, has grown in popularity with over 2,000 visitors attending the last one, coming from throughout the Province and beyond.

This boutique event, held at Ribblesdale Gardens, boasts a host of quality stalls, but is also billed as a family day out, not just a shopping spree.

Taking place on October 30th between 10am and 4pm, this is a community fundraiser, as well as a chance for business owners to promote their products to the wider community.

The large entertainment area offers live music provided by Assembly Required and an enticing range of food and beverage options. Wee Dram Farm will be there with baby animals and pony rides, and children can dig about in the giant sand pit.

A new attraction this year is antique valuing by Steve Purcell from Antiques International, who will offer free valuations. Visitors can bring antiques to be valued (bring a photo for large items) or just sit and watch Steve in action between 11am and 1pm and 2 -3pm. Antiques can then be left at the office to be collected on departure.

Members of Oxford’s Volunteer Fire Brigade will help man the gates, which are open from 10am to 4pm and the Ashley Gorge Advisory Board will manage the parking.

Event organiser, N icky Fairbairn commented that Ribblesdale Gardens is very sheltered and worth visiting, even if the day seems windy elsewhere. Organisers advise that EFTPOS for payments and cash withdrawals is available once inside the gates and there is also a huge plant shop, which is definitely worth a browse.

The Fete is a wonderful Christmas shopping opportunity, a chance to catchup with friends and neighbours and will take place, rain hail or shine. Definitely mark it on the calendar as ‘not to be missed’

Canterbury’s self-proclaimed town of the future marked its 150th anniversary last weekend with a busy three days of celebrations.

Jeff Bland, Bland chairman of the Rolleston 150th organising committee, said he was ‘rapt’ with the event, which included a large parade through the town on Sunday.

“It was such a great atmosphere and so many people said they would love to do it all again next year,” Jeff commented.

About 300 people attended the anniversary’s opening event on Friday, October 14th. On the Saturday, paddocks at the northern end of the town, were transformed to accommodate two events - Rolleston Show and CultureFest.

The Rolleston Show featured vintage and classic cars, as well as trains, to celebrate Rolleston’s history with the railway. The Rolleston Show and the 150th anniversary was organised by a committee of Rolleston residents.

CultureFest showcased the district’s cultures with free performances, fun activities, craft and food stalls, along with activities for children like a mega slide, SNAG inflatable golf,

bouncy castles and Pedalmania.

The activity programme included performances from local Indian, Chinese, Polish, Russian, Italian and Greek communities, as well as a Scottish flash mob!

“Each group brought an unique experience from their culture.

Events like this help to build connections between different communities and raise the profile of arts and culture in Selwyn, something that has been a goal of the Council as part of its Newcomers and Migrants Strategy,” said Dave Tippett, Tippett Selwyn Council Senior Events and Recreation Advisor.

Activities on show included Turkish Ceramics, Oriental Ink Painting, and Bhangra - a style of Indian Dance. Meanwhile guests greatly enjoyed the opportunity to try cuisine from the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

CultureFest was presented by the Selwyn District Council with support from the Christchurch Multicultural Council, Canterbury Migrants Centre, The Rotary Club of Lincoln, Rolleston Newcomers Network and

Smokefree Aotearoa NZ. Jeff estimated up to 10,000 people attended the festivities, which were capped off with a ‘superb’ parade through town on Sunday.

“It’s the biggest grand parade I have seen. This is a parade that took an hour to go past one point. It was huge.”

Jeff added that there was a lot of enthusiasm to hold similar events alongside the town’s annual fireworks evening in November.

Rolleston was named for Canterbury’s last provincial superintendent, William Rolleston.

Rolleston It was once a small railway junction, where the West Coast railway line leaves the main line. A 1972-74 plan for a substantial ‘new town’ was abandoned, but Rolleston has since grown swiftly and now has a population of nearly 15,000.

The town’s pronunciation has puzzled some Selwyn residents.

Speaking at the anniversary weekend’s opening, William Rolleston’s great grandson said Rolleston, usually said Roll-eston, should be pronounced Rolls-ton.

Friday, October 14th saw Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer volunteers out on the street to raise money for this worthy cause.

Local women Roz MuirMuir-Steele and Co-ordinator Louise Hardham braved a cold, wet day to support the appeal. Breast cancer is the most common cancer for women, and the third most common cancer overall.

Seven New Zealand women, on average, will hear the news each day that they have breast cancer. It affects one in nine New Zealand women over their lifetime. Most will survive five years or longer if the cancer is detected early enough, but tragically more than 600 women die of the disease every year.

The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation could not carry out the work it does across the country without its amazing volunteers. Volunteers are not only appreciated and valued but volunteering offers them a wonderful opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people and support a cause while having fun and making a difference.

“This is the third year I have coordinated the NZ Breast

Cancer Street Appeal in Darfield,” said Louise, “and the people are so generous with their donations. We will get a confirmed collection total in a couple of weeks for Darfield and then a total for the whole appeal and it’s always nice to see how our own area has done.

“I couldn’t do this without the lovely volunteers that donate their time over the two days and have already had more people asking to help next year. It is lovely to connect with the community over something that affects so many people,

including men, which I think sometimes gets forgotten.

“I think everyone knows someone who has been, or still is, touched by cancer. We hear many of their personal experiences, both about themselves, or family members (sadly not always of survival) and it gets quite emotional at times.

“We’re already looking forward to next year’s appeal with more volunteers and ideas up my sleeve to raise money for this great cause,” Louise concluded.

Malvern residents will have the opportunity to dispose of garden waste at a community garden waste day to be held at Hawkins Pit on Saturday October 29th between 10am and 4pm. The pit is located off Cullen’s Road just east of Bangor Road, about five kilometres from Darfield.

“If you’re planning to clean up your garden this spring this is a great chance to get rid of garden prunings, tree trimmings or weeds,” commented Selwyn District Council’s Solid Waste Manager Andrew Boyd.

Payment is by cash only (no EFTPOS is available).

Proceeds from the Malvern Day will be donated to the Malvern Lions Club.

General rubbish, soil, flax, cabbage tree leaves, trees or branches over ten centimetres in diameter cannot be disposed of through this service.

The most recent community garden waste was held in late April at Hawkins Pit near Darfield. Over fourteen tonnes of organic waste was collected and the day raised over $1,000 for the Malvern Lions Club.

“Previous community garden waste days have been very popular and it’s great that people in Malvern have been dropping their organic waste off at these events so it can be composted rather than going to landfill or being burnt. This option is much better for our environment,” stated Andrew.

Other options to dispose of

organic waste include composting it at home, putting it in a green lidded organics bin or dropping it off to the Pines Resource Recovery Park (a charge will apply) near Rolleston.

Also on the day the Malvern Lions will be selling their fundraising ‘pea-straw’ at the Hawkins Pit. For those with utes or a trailer, this is a great opportunity to utilise space going home.

The Darfield High School Smallbore rifle shooting team recently competed in a national and international competition in Blenheim. The Shoulder to Shoulder match brought together nineteen Secondary School teams of three shooters. Schools between Tauranga in the North and Dunedin in the South competed strongly for sought after trophies and opportunities to shoot for their Island and for New Zealand, in a postal shoot with United Kingdom secondary school shooters.

For the Darfield High School team of Will Benbow, Benbow Hunter Benbow and Brogan Baldwin this was their third participation in the national competition.

They had worked hard all winter to improve their shooting and take it up a notch to compete.

Will shot in the first squad and suffered a situation all shooters dread. A shot at one of his targets seemingly vanished and his score ended up 86.3; that was probably ten below what it should have been. Hunter had come down with a cold and was not well. He struggled to shoot

It was looking dire, but our shooters dug deep despite Brogan experiencing another shooter in her space and round two came in at 286.9. Will then shot a personal best with 100.6, and the other two shot well to give us 293.13 for round three. That gained us sixth position overall, which was extremely creditable

considering our hiccups. Overall winners Bethlehem College from Tauranga deserved their win with very consistent shooting by all their team. Brogan was selected for the South Island team and while the North Island took the trophy she shot well enough to be selected to shoot against the UK in the postal shoot. Very well done to Brogan and it is great to see the medals and pendant coming home for another of our top shooters.

If you have lending on current floating rates, it will still be less than we could have reasonably expected a couple of years ago. However the pundits are now saying our glory days could be coming to an end and that banks are going to halt the downward trend of lending rates in favour of bolstering the deposit rates. Without deposits, banks have to source money from abroad, thus increasing the costs of funding. It could be hoped they can achieve a good balance between healthy deposit rates for investors and low interest rates for borrowers.

However we have seen some movement from banks in the last week in raising their ‘special’ rates, and so it may be time to look at fixing that floating loan. As always, I suggest spreading your risk over a couple of different terms and if there is any chance of being able to add in a lump sum via bonus’s etc, then leave a portion floating to avoid penalties.

Darfield Library and Service Centre now has a new self-issue kiosk. The kiosk was installed on October 10th and has been ensuring visitors to the library are able to borrow items faster than ever.

The kiosk gives step-by-step instructions, making it quick and

easy for people to use. A Darfield librarian recalls the 85year-old local woman who used the kiosk for the first time and was amazed at how easy it was to operate.

All libraries in Selwyn now have self-issue kiosks available to the public. The new kiosks allow

Selwyn District Council Libraries Manager, Vicki Carlyon said these kiosks will enable library staff to spend more time help ing cus tome rs a nd delivering an increasing range of programmes and events in the libraries.

Library staff are enjoying helping customers use the kiosk but say many customers are happy to use the kiosk on their own.

Darfield Library has also recently finished having its meeting rooms and conference room earthquake strengthened.

These rooms are available to be booked once again by the public for a small charge.

The Malvern Cancer Support Group is one of the Cancer Society’s longest established voluntary groups. The small group of Cancer Society trained volunteers provide assistance and support to people in the Malvern area who have had a diagnosis of cancer. They are locals who are on hand to aid others in the community whose lives cancer has touched.

Established thirty three years ago last September, Malvern were the first voluntary group in the Canterbury region to offer assistance of any nature to people affected by cancer. Through referrals from the Cancer Society the Group’s volunteers support families in many different ways; driving them to treatments in Christchurch, assistance with heating and fuel costs, lawn mowing, home baking and sometimes just someone to talk to.

Over the last twelve months alone the Malvern Group have supported fourteen families in the district. They have provided

104 driving trips into Oncology in Christchurch for eight patients; distributed $2,000 worth of groceries and supplied firewood and petrol vouchers totaling $1,800 to twelve families. They are quick to acknowledge that this couldn’t happen without the support of local fundraising and donations directly to the Group.

“Strong foundations are the building block of any good organisation,” said Group spokesperson Elaine Guy, Guy “and thanks to our founding members Diana Reid and the late Janice Collier, along with the other early members of our group we have strong foundations, values and core strengths from which to build.

To the Editors: We have just had the most rainy period in Canterbury for quite some time. Everything is green and growing but our farmers have no idea how to conserve and utilise this rain.

Farmers need education, not irrigation.

Our farming techniques are turning Canterbury into a dry place, when under different management we could all be living in an oasis. Irrigation will not create this oasis, only an overdraft and deplete our rivers of their water. We desperately need a new management approach to farming in Canterbury and this will only come through education of our farming folk.

The techniques that we need are already being used all over the world and we are being left behind - in a cloud of dust.

“October 22nd is National Nut Day and locally Walnuts are gaining in popularity,” said Trudi Meyer of the Promotions Committee for the Walnut Industry Group.

Trees are an essential part of any farm or lifestyle block and their benefits extend beyond the immediate generation. They are grown on farms for a number of reasons; timber or food production, shelter, shade, erosion prevention, riparian margins, aesthetic appeal, firewood and wildlife habitats.

They can provide a financial return for nut crops or timber, but the secret to successful results is to match the tree to the purpose and the locality!

Walnut trees are a great way to diversify a farming operation.

From the age of about six years old, the trees will start to produce walnuts, a handful at first but up to two tonnes per ha (approx. 10kg/tree).

There are a large number of ten acre blocks suitable for a walnut orchard and it is quite feasible to establish a walnut orchard in the country while working in the city and doing the orchard work over the weekend.

A year ago the founders of ‘Cracker of A Nut’ - a walnut processor at West Melton retired, selling the business to a newly established New Zealand Walnut Co-op. Around forty growers so far, from Canterbury to Alexandra, Oamaru and Richmond, bought shares in the NZ Walnut Co-op.

Demand for walnuts is growing, with around 800 tonne of walnut kernel imported in 2015 (up from 500 tonne a few years ago), “but,” said Trudi, “the taste of fresh New Zealand grown walnuts is superior to the

In 1998, Ngaire and Tony Sigmund bought ten acres of bare land at West Melton where they have not only established their beautiful home, but also between 2000 and 2002 planted over 400 walnut trees.

Ngaire and Tony harvested their first walnuts (60 Kgs) in 2008.

Since then they have approximately doubled their harvest each year, apart from a couple of years where late frosts were problematic.

Currently the couple pick, wash, dry and bag all the walnuts themselves and send them to Cracker of a Nut (Walnuts New Zealand Co-op Ltd) in West Melton for processing.

Their orchard and the new walnut shed have proven to be a great playground for their family and grandchildren, especially in the warm summer months, Tony and Ngaire report.

The Muddy Good Run isn’t for the faint hearted, or for those that don’t like getting dirty. It’s an annual race held in Rakaia where the fairly young and the old-enough-to-know-better can get muddy and sweaty and all while clad in fancy dress, if they choose!

This year it was held on Sunday, October 16th, with hundreds of people opting to participate. The dress-ups ranged from pirates to fairies, minions to kings and queens. However by the end of the morning characters were barely identifiable - covered in mud, but still wearing a smile.

For children it was a 1.5 kilometre obstacle course, involving wading through mud pools, under cargo nets, over vehicles and even bouncy castles. Near the end of the race the children were doused with the fireman’s hose to clean them down, before some more hay bales, one last cargo net, and the sprint to the finish.

For the bigger ’kids’, there was a choice of a ten kilometre or fifteen kilometre course as individuals, or as part of a team.

Organiser John Moore commented that it was not an easy event to put on logistically, but was well worth it. “It’s a huge set up and a huge pack out, and all for about forty minutes of fun. But to see so many people smiling, laughing, grinning and stuff - it’s so cool.

People just get covered in mud,” John ended.

The Darfield Plunket Toy Library has been granted $1,013. by the Lotteries Commission to spend on updating/replacing the toys in the library. It’s reported that new toys have been ordered and will be on the shelves before Christmas.

This year the Plunket Toy Library are taking part in the Hororata Highland Games, where they will operate a mums and bubs site providing changing and feeding facilities.

They will also be taking a selection of ride on and outdoor toys to entertain under five year olds. There will be a gold coin donation for the use of the toys, as a fundraiser.

Organisers from Toy Library also have plans underway for an under seven year old’s Christmas Disco to be held on Sunday, December 4th, planned following the success of the first disco earlier in the year. Look out for details coming soon and check out the

A few days ago I was having some work done at my local garage. A blonde came in and asked for a seven-hundred-ten.

We all looked at each other and another customer asked, “What is a seven-hundred- ten?”

She replied, “You know, the little piece in the middle of the engine, I have lost it and need a new one.”

She replied that she did not know exactly what it was, but this piece had always been there.

The mechanic gave her a piece of paper and a pen and asked her to draw what the piece looked like.

She drew a circle and in the middle of it wrote 710. He then took her over to a car, just like hers, which had its hood up and asked, “is there a 710 on this car?”

She pointed and said, “of course, it’s right there!”
