When the Selwyn District Council Electoral Officer, Douglas Marshall contacted all those candidates involved in the local body elections at around 1:30pm last Saturday, it was to impart good news for some and not so for others. For new Mayor of Selwyn, S am Broughton the call was the cue for excitement all round. Sam who was in a room with a number of his family members said there were hugs, and more hugs, and after the initial shock and excitement subsided a little, the enormity and responsibility of the task ahead began to hit. However Sam has never shied away from responsibility, or the desire to deal with issues either around the Council table or in his capacity as a Youth worker. He is certainly, at 35, the youngest Mayor Selwyn has seen, and is the youngest currently serving in New Zealand. But does he see the task of overseeing an $80 million plus budget as daunting after speaking with Sam, one suspects not. He commented that having grown up on a farm and being
aware of the rural focus of Selwyn during those years, he was now aware of a subtle shift toward a younger population and a more urban lifestyle. Sam felt his life experiences, travel and upbringing, were beneficial in creating a link between the ‘old’ and now the ‘new’ Selwyn.

“I definitely feel I have the necessary passion and drive to lead Council,” he added, “and I have spent some time building relationships to facilitate this transition. “I feel strongly about wanting communities to bring their ideas to Council for support, rather than the Council dictate what projects will happen.” Commu nit ies are re al ly important to Sam and he can remember the more rural Selwyn when they were supportive and present throughout. He commented that while Selwyn is growing rapidly economically there were still people ‘on the margins’ that struggled financially and were often physically far away from these communities. ‘‘There’s been a bit of a loss of that connection.’’ Sam has been fielding congratulations from throughout the district, has left his position as a Youth Worker and is now looking forward to his new role as Mayor. Another extremely important role to be undertaken in February next year will be that of parenthood when Sam and his wife Liz will welcome their first child to the world. Characteristically Sam thanked all those who have supported him on his journey to the Mayoralty, and expressed sadness for those who didn’t make the cut. He said he was looking forward to working with the new Council and addressing some of the issues that were close to his heart.

The Darfield Recreation Centre was abuzz with more than 200 people for the opening night of the annual Malvern Community Arts Council, Art Week. A convivial atmosphere, outstanding works of art and the excitement of the awards all created an enjoyable evening for those attending. For those that didn’t, the exhibition in the Recreation Centre still has until 5pm Sunday, October 16th to run and is well worth a visit. Judge, Ken Hall, Hall a Curator of the Christchurch Art Gallery commented that, “each piece of art and craft seen in the exhibition represents the tip of someone’s iceberg. There are a lot of works in this Exhibition, by a lot of artists, in an impressively wide variety of media. The works seen here represent a tiny sampling of their past, present and future work. That means there’s a huge amount of art-making happening out there, possibly not always visible but definitely happening, which is a nice thought. I have to say that there are many other works and objects here that merit attention and mention. Obviously there are points awarded to everyone who took part.” The MCAC Premier Award went to Sarah Dodson, Dodson a third year fine arts student at Canterbury University. “She has two very good small paintings in this line-up,” said Ken, “however the prize is for (171) Porcelain Figure 1 - a circular painting in oils of an ornamental, cross-eyed, pink ceramic owl.” Ken added that he hadn’t a clue about why Sarah wanted to paint this subject, but suspected it was part of her strategy as an

Last Saturday night, Greendale Church was full with almost eighty folk attending what was described as ‘a wonderful Historical Film Evening’ presented by Fred Bull. Bull The event was organised as a fundraiser to assist with the upgrade of the Church kitchen. There was film footage from 1937 through to the 1950's and included events such as a local wedding, family reunion, district floods and a snowstorm. A film of a parade in Darfield showed only one landmark still there today; the building housing the Garden Centre, Gift Gallery and Café, on the corner by the clock tower. A highlight for those attending was seeing the Queen and Prince Philip
disembark the train on to the Darfield railway platform in 1953. Some of the audience even remembered being children in the crowd waving their flags! There were many old films of farming over the years; covering harvesting, building sheaf stacks, working horses, baling straw and threshing grain - all much enjoyed by the audience, many of whom were farmers themselves. The films depicted hardworking people,
who took pleasure from simple outdoor pursuits such as a climb to the top of Mount Torlesse. Over supper, memories were shared and many of those present appreciated seeing preserved footage of past, loved, family members. Organisers thank everyone very much for their kind generosity toward upgrading the Greendale Church kitchen.

The New Zealand Secondary Sch o ol s Mo u nt a i n B i ke Championships took place in Dunedin the weekend of October 1st. For the third year in a row, Ethan Rose of Darfield High School, took the Championship title in the Under 14’s Super D. The weekend started with the Down Hill race held at Signal Hill on Saturday. After practice in the morning, Ethan's qualifying run placed him third in the Under 14’s class with a time of 3minutes 18seconds, he held
that place on his race run finishing third with a improved time of 3mins 11secs. A great result and good start for the overall championships with his stronger events still to come. The second event, starting straight after the Down Hill, was completed late Saturday afternoon, again the Super D at Signal Hill, this is a one off timed stage. Ethan was looking forward to this one knowing his cross country fitness and bike skills would suit this race. And it did, putting down a super

fast time of 8mins 8secs winning the U14's class by over forty seconds and it wasn't until the last U16's rider came down, for Ethan's time to be beaten. He was now the sixth fastest overall from over one hundred riders, with only one U20 and one U17 going sub eight minutes, definitely an awesome result. Last event and Ethan's strongest, the cross country started Sunday morning. Ethan was there bright and early wanting to check out the course and warm the legs up for his 10:30am race start. His race was with the U13's and U15's, meaning he had to start behind all the U15's. However he soon took the lead half way round the first lap. One U15 rider went with him and the pair rode away from the rest of the field. On the last lap Ethan upped the pace gaining second place and came across the finish line with over twenty seconds lead time, giving him the overall win, and U14's win, by nearly 1.5 minutes. Ethan is appreciative of the support of his sponsors and of course all the help and assistance from his Mum and Dad.

say die attitude are just two of the many qualities that keep him in the forefront of the game. It’s been said that Blair has perhaps one of the best work-rates in the competition. His ability to make countless big tackles, known as the ‘McIlroy handshake’, is reportedly quite phenomenal. Blair, a builder by trade, who now owns and manages his own business specialising in foundations in the Canterbury area, has had to sacrifice plenty to make this fifty game milestone come to fruition. He has an extremely supportive family, wife Kelly and son Jack (one) have made many trips over the Alps to support Blair and have also enjoyed the Buller way of life. Twin brother Scott McIlroy (‘Scones’) has joined Blair for fifteen of his games with Buller and has also made many trips in support. Perhaps someone who has managed as many kilometres as Blair during this fifty game
career has been his father Grant McIlroy. McIlroy Grant has barely missed a game that his boys have played for Buller, including many trips to the North Island. Blair can add already well over one hundred games for his own Darfield Club side, as well as a season in the United Kingdom, so it may come as no surprise that two shoulder reconstructions have come his way. This could be seen as requiring a step-back, not by Blair though, he sees it as an opportunity to continue playing the game he loves. “It has been a real honour playing for Buller over the last six years and to get my fifty games is a great way to finish off my last season. Huge thanks to my family for all their support, it wouldn't be possible without them. The Heartland competition is a great thing to be a part of and anyone who gets the opportunity to be involved in it should jump at the chance,” Blair concluded.

The Darfield Fire Brigade held their annual awards on Saturday October 8th to recognise the time and dedication put into the Brigade by its volunteers. The event was attended by Fire department Dignitaries, Brigade Life H on o r ary M e mb e r s, Ex Members, Local Brigade Representatives and family members. The awards began at 3pm with an opening introduction from MC, Phil Robson followed by a welcome from Darfield’s Chief Fire Officer Alan Kittelty. Kittelty New Zealand Fire Service Area Manager Dave Berry followed with an address. The awards were presented by Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigade Association Executive Member Kath Love (United Fire Brigades Association Awards), Rob Beattie (Beattie Cup), Alan Kittelty (Brigade Trophies).

A donation of land by long- currently under construction on standing West Melton residents Weedons Ross Road opposite Peter and Bonny Rhodes will West Melton School (which is also allow a new walkway to be having additional classrooms created to connect the Wilfield added). Another retail area is s u b d i v i s i o n , n o w u n d e r planned off State Highway 73, construction, to West Melton beside the existing BP station, which is currently going through a township. The new subdivision is on a 92 consenting process. A new hectare site on the corner of community and recreation centre Weedons Ross Road and State is also planned opposite here as Highway 73 and is being part of the West Melton Reserve developed to accommodate 170 development. The new pathway route is one of lots. The gifted land will allow a a number of projects identified in footpath to be developed from a new Corridor Management Plan the northern end of the which aims to improve the safety subdivision and along State of State Highway 73 in West Highway 73 to connect to West Melton as the town develops. The plan has been developed by the Melton’s central township area. Wilfield’s developer will pay for NZ Transport Agency, Selwyn the construction of the new 280 District Council and developer metre long footpath, and the Gilman Wheelans. Council will fund surveying, site As part of the Corridor clearing and fencing costs as part Management Plan, the 70km of a collaborative effort to get the speed limit zone will be shifted connection in place as soon as 250 metres further east of the possible. The NZ Transport Agency is planning to create flush medians on the State Highway near the crossing points and carry out some widening to accommodate these and other changes as part of the Corridor Management Plan. Over the longer term, the New Zealand Transport Agency and the Council will look at options to upgrade the Weedons Ross Road/West Melton Road and State Highway 73 intersection. The NZ Transport Agency is currently preparing a business case for future highway improvements between Darfield and Christchurch.

Malvern Squash Club is to hold a Pennants Championship during October and November for its members. It is essentially an ‘internal’ team competition held over seven weeks and culminating in a ‘finals’ night and presentation of awards etc. Members of the nearby Oxford Squash Club have also been invited to join in, and Malvern are delighted that some have accepted the invitation. Malvern Squash Club is an active and social Club that would welcome new members and invite anyone interested to get in contact with their committee. The Club recently participated in The Marist Trophy for the best a Darfield High School led performed club in Interclub programme that provided Year seven and eight students with Malvern Squash Club.
The Annual Canterbury Squash Awards took place on Friday, September 16th at the Christchurch Football Club. This year there was a particularly strong group of nominees and deciding on the winners was tough. Awards presented included Canterbury District Events, Interclub, Junior Age Groups, Service To Squash and major awards including Club Of The Year. an introduction to a number of sport and recreation activities. The Club was delighted to participate in the initiative and provided the court facilities and some coaching for those students who chose to give squash a go. Club members understand the students enjoyed the experience and appreciated the opportunity to play squash and gain some coaching along the way. Recently, as reported in the News, the annual Rakaia– Malvern Squash Challenge took place. This is an annual event between Malvern and the Rakaia Squash Clubs where both field teams of twelve players to compete for the Brownlee Trophy. The evening was deemed a success with Rakaia again coming out the winner. A special feature of the evening was an exhibition match between Paul Coll (ranked New Zealand number one and world number thirty one) and Chris van der Salm (ranked in the top ten in New Zealand). Spectators and fellow players experienced some exhilarating squash, and although an exhibition match it still had a strong competitive edge to it. Paul came out the winner, but it was reported that this was only after some spirited efforts from both he and Chris.
