Last Friday, September 30th an interested crowd gathered in the Selwyn Gallery for the opening of an unique exhibition.

Entitled ‘Pleasure and Provocation’ it contained works from the Lincoln University Art Collection.

Since the early 1970s, when a small group of staff used social club funds to purchase the first paintings (to the dismay of some colleagues who felt the money should be used to buy a beer fridge!), the collection has grown to encompass original works by emerging and established New Zealand artists.

From the relatives and fellow artists of the late Cath Brown of Taumutu, to the official portrait of the first Principal of Canterbury Agricultural College; from Sutton to Cotton to Braithwaite to Kahukiwa, the collection provides a rich and living record of the land, its occupants, and its uses.

The collection is overseen by the Lincoln University Art Committee, whose current chair is Dr Megan Clayton, Clayton and is exhibited thanks to the support of the Malvern Community Arts Council (MCAC).

This exhibition, the first of its kind from the Lincoln University Art Collection, pairs works to please and provoke the viewer, bringing to the people of Selwyn district some of the taonga that is cherished on campus.

consisted of 138 starters and I finished 71st. This race started in the centre of Perth, finished in the Kalamunda Hills and involved 2,200 metres of climbing. The event was a real eye opener, the level of the competition was outstanding.

We have some very good road racers in the 40-44 age group in New Zealand, but in this race there were a lot of ex

professionals who were very strong and with loads of experience. It was awesome to be a part of this race with guys of such incredible ability.

I was very proud to be representing New Zealand and it was even more special to have my wife and three boys there in support,” Simon finished.

The MCAC are fortunate to have previous Lincoln University lecturer Alistair Nicol on their Executive to liaise with the

Lincoln University Art committee, making this exhibition possible.

The Darfield Charity Bridge Tournament was held on September 30th. This year the event attracted twenty seven tables with players coming from Amberley to Ashburton, along with a large contingent from Christchurch Clubs. Visiting players commented on how nice the flowering cherries looked as they drove into Darfield and in fact one couple told a Darfield Club member they did an extra circuit just to enjoy the trees!

To the Editors: The letter of Allan Thorne Malvern News, September 30th, simply cannot be left without comment.

Firstly none of the content is factually correct other than the visit by Cr Walters, but like other Councillors, she never offered any help to the Thomas’s. The Thomas’s have never altered the drainage system of their house. The soil supplied was used to fill the lowest point on the property.

Finally, it was not rising groundwater that caused the flooding. It has now been proven conclusively that the Council is responsible for the flooding of the Thomas property by filling in the drain on Bealey Road, plus poor engineering design of stormwater disposal from the road carriageway.

He researched the problem and the facts; gathered evidence for our Barrister; lobbied the Council on our behalf; attended all the Court Cases and was always there to offer us support and advice.

That is support!

Visiting the property is not necessarily offering ’me’ support, particularly in your case Allan Thorne.

You supported a Council that chose to spend ratepayers money fighting us, rather than accept my offer (July 2013) to meet with us, and fix the problem.

A new initiative by local businesswoman, Jo Counsell has made its entrance in Darfield.

Mobile Vehicle Grooming is now available and has multiple services for vehicle owners. DROPBOX - WHAT IS IT? They run under a number of names like DropBox or One Drive or G Drive but in essence they are online (Cloud) or even Internet (if you like to use the term) based storage. Heaven knows I’ve harped on about backups often enough, but there is another way rather than connecting an external drive or a USB flash drive to back up those important documents, photos or music databases. Go to www.dropbox.com and download the app and signup for it. What it will do is allow you, when you put in an email address and password, the ability to have something on your machine that will ‘Sync’ or copy information automatically from one computer, tablet, desktop or phone to another, thus giving you a backup somewhere up there in the cloud of all those important things that you don’t want to ever lose. It’s free to a point. When you sign up you get 2Gb’s free and you can use this however you like. When you go close to that limit you start to get a warning that you will very soon need more space. $100 dollars or so gives you 1000Gb (1Tb) and that will enable you, your wife, probably the children and the dog to be able to back up everything that you want to. Business plans are available as well. Having it on your PC is one thing but being able to sign on to the DropBox website on “ANY” device and get your stuff is certainly another.

Darfield Garden Club met on September 20th for the annual Spring Show.

What a wonderful selection of spring flowers were on display.

This spring was very different from last year and there was a delightful array of exhibits in all classes. Our judge this afternoon was Janet Cullen who had a tough job making her way through all the flowers on display. Most Points Cut flowers was won by Margaret Seaton with Kate Campbell second. After deliberation Janet awarded the ‘Premier Daffodil' to one of Kate Campbell's entries and ‘Premier Bloom’ to Margaret Seaton for a stunning Camellia.

We were then treated to a very informative talk from Shirley Sorenson on Succulents.

Shirley brought along a great range of succulents already potted, many were made into miniature gardens and would make wonderful gifts. Shirley finds quirky and original containers in Op shops and garage sales in which to display the many and varied types of succulents. She spoke about giving them a good water and then leaving them. There was a fascinating display of cactus, many had the most petite flowers in bright and bold colours. Shirley also spoke about her new venture into Bonsai and she had some which were under development, but you could clearly see how they would progress. Thank you for sharing with us.

Our meeting was formally closed, this gave members an opportunity to view the Spring Show exhibits and also to look more closely at the succulents and Bonsai.

Our outdoor garden visits are beginning on October 18th we are off to Broadfields, while on November 22nd we will visit Rollinson Farm. A meeting will be held on November 15th - all are welcome to attend.

Spring is a great time to visit Central Otago and this year the Darfield Gun Club was able to send thirteen shooters to have another crack at the Bodkin Shield. The squad gathered on Friday, September 23rd at the Wanaka Gun Club grounds and signed in for the days’ events.

With the opening salvo's fired in round one, a quick analysis showed an alarming capacity for the occasional lost target for most of the squad. Dave Folley and Dave Pitkethley the only two to make the shoot-offs, unfortunately they were early casualties and didn't trouble the scorers for long with both missing the same target.

With the first day concluded the team headed for the Clyde Hotel, where a few glasses of special water and a bit of soulsearching was had. Then down to the restaurant for the Team Dinner paid for by the fines jar ($2 for a missed first or last target and a few miscellaneous additions).

Early start for Saturday and through to Moa Creek, quickly entered and out to the traps.

Once again the possibles were rare amongst the team but at least there was a bit more consistency within the group.

Round two and out to Siberia, not such a good move for most with scores dropping away.

Then on to the Bodkin match a hard fought competition which brought forth a great result (see the next page for the report on this section of competition).

Bodkin Shield: With two teams, updates were quickly given as the different squads shot, Bobby Wright for the Black team and Jackson Pitkethley for the Red team were first up with Bobby scoring eleven while the talented second barrel (four in a row at one stage) of Jackson got the Red team off to a good start with a possible. Rupert Wright shot well for a good fourteen for Black while Tony Stuart managed thirteen and they were followed by Will Benbow with another eleven and Paul Templeton with a fourteen. Halfway through and Black were down nine targets and Red down three.

Robert Bampton with a fourteen got the Black moving again with Duncan Jefferis continuing his long run of nineteen Bodkin matches for nineteen possibles, keeping the Red team in the hunt. Dave Pitkethley matched

his son with a possible, while Bevan Brown shot a fifteen shot possible to keep the pressure on the other teams. Last up for the black team was Murray Robertson with an uncharacteristic ten to give a final score of 75/90 for his team.

For the Reds, Dave Folley brought the team home with another possible for a team score of eighty seven. Duncan then gave the word that the Reds were in with a chance, and soon after that there was only one other team who could match them - resulting in a shoot-off.

The shoot-off started with the first three of both teams with Waimate-Oamaru the first to show signs of pressure, Tony followed with a lost target to bring things back to level.

The Waimate-Oamaru team missed a further two lost targets

to score 12/15 while Jackson, Paul and Tony gave the team a two target advantage with 14/15. Now the pressure was on with the team having one hand on the trophy.

Duncan, Bevan and Dave F responded well under pressure as target after target broke. It fell to Bevan with the penultimate target to put the win beyond Waimate-Oamaru with Dave cleaning up the last target to complete the task.

Finally after eleven years of trying, the Bodkin Shield was on its way to Darfield.

“Well shot to all team members, everyone contributed and it is a shared result,” said a Gun Club spokesperson. “To the Waimate -Oamaru team thank you for the shoot-off and to all other teams, thank you for the competition. “ O n a p e r s on a l n ot e , congratulations to Tony Stuart who became the third generation of Stuarts to get his name on the Trophy.”

Mark October 16th on the calendar for the annual ‘Take a Kid Fishing’ event which will take place at the Groynes picnic grounds, off Johns Road, Belfast. The Isaac Conserva on and Wildlife Trust has again donated hundreds of salmon for junior fishers.

From 9am - 1pm fishing is for children twelve years and under - with one lake specifically for under eights. There is some gear available to use. From 1pm un l 7pm all children (under eighteen years of age) can fish, but will require their own equipment.

Food caravans will be on site, there’s a raffle with some great prizes and cooking and fille ng demonstra ons from ‘Execu ve Chef’ Phil Keen.

An exciting programme of events is coming to Selwyn to celebrate Rolleston’s 150th anniversary this October.

Rolleston was named after William Rolleston who was instrumental in bringing the railway to the town. The railway line was officially opened at Rolleston on 13 October 1866.

The theme of the celebrations will be ‘Rolleston - New Zealand’s Youngest Old Town’ reflecting Rolleston’s history but also its recent growth with the population increasing from 1971 in 2000 to around 14,000 today.

The anniversary will be celebrated from Friday, October 14th to Sunday, October 16th, 2016. The celebrations kick off on the evening of October 14th with a mix and mingle event , along with supper and light refreshments, plus an opportunity to view photos from Rolleston’s history. A drive in movie will also be held on this

Friday night.

On Saturday a free show and multi-cultural festival will be hosted in Rolleston from 10am4pm. The show will feature vintage and classic cars, and celebrate Rolleston’s railway connections. The CultureFest multi-cultural festival will include food and market stalls, along

with entertainment. On Saturday evening a dine and dance is planned to take place.

The celebrations will finish with a street parade through central Rolleston on Sunday, October 16th from 10am. The parade will end at Clearview School where people can join the fun of the school’s fete.

Months of hard work have paid off for students from Springfield’s Danzfit Dance Studio. Dancers recently competed in the Greymouth Competitions Society’s Festival of Dance held over four days at the beginning of the September school holidays (the 99th year of these Competitions).

Fourteen Danzfit pupils, ranging in age from four to thirteen years, danced in the competitions, comprising of nine students from Springfield and five from Greymouth.

“It’s been an amazing Competitions and I am so proud of everyone,” said Leisa Yaxley, Yaxley Danzfit’s owner and principal dance teacher. “This is only the second year that we’ve had students competing in dance competitions so the results are fantastic, especially for such a small dance school,” Leisa added.

Leisa established Danzfit four years ago and teaches students in both Springfield and Greymouth.

Three of the five team dances involved Danzfit students from both Greymouth and Springfield, which presented challenges for practices.

However travel back and forth between the two centres definitely paid off. All three team dances were enthusiastically received by the crowd and also placed well.

‘Rule The World’ was first in the

fourteen years and under Contemporary Teams category, ‘Over the Rainbow’ gained first place in the fourteen years and under, Lyrical Team and ‘Titanium’ was second in the same category, followed by ‘Uptown Funk’ who placed third in the fourteen years and under Modern/Jazz or Hip Hop Teams category. A Special Award went to Phoenix Smith who was picked as the most promising Jazz Dancer twelve years and under.

“Congratulations to everyone for a very successful competition,” Leisa said with a smile. “It was wonderful to see all the talent from Malvern at the Competitions, T ara Marshall’s Dance and Fitness studio and Malvern Ballet all had outstanding results as did Manaia Davies and Sophie Kingi who scored 98 points out of 100 for their duo, which earnt them a trophy for most entertaining item,” Leisa concluded.
