The Porters Ski Area Local School Ski Championships took place on Wednesday, September 14th after a couple of date changes due to adverse weather and snow conditions.

Organisers thanked teachers and parents for all their extra help on the course to make the day run as smoothly as possible.

They also congratulated all the winning teams and individuals in the Dynastar and Snowvision sponsored races.

There was a great turnout at the event with twenty five teams from thirteen schools competing and a show of enthusiasm by all!

Hororata School’s third placing in the mixed teams was especially sweet as their usual senior school contingent was

away at camp and so the spot was filled by a more than capable team made up a six year old and three seven year olds!

Ethel and Bethel promote them selves as a ‘couple of old biddies who are always up for a night out with a bunch of good folk’. They certainly did just that at the Kirwee Netball Club Fundraiser held on Friday, September 16th at the Kirwee Community Hall. With a packed

venue, Ethel and Bethel kept everyone truly entertained with their antics.

The evening was a very successful fundraising venture for the Kirwee Netball Club. As well as the bingo those attending could assist with the fundraising by participating in

either a standard auction or a silent auction - or both.

Committee member and one of the event’s organisers, Donna Hurndell expressed pleasure at how well the event had gone, how enjoyable it had been and especially how successful the fundraising was.

The opening of the Malvern Bowling season took place at the Coalgate Bowling Club on Saturday, September 17th. The weather was perfect for bowls, and the day started with Malvern President Tony McLachlan welcoming everyone and also presenting Peggie

The Spring into Oxford event has a fun, family atmosphere

running from 10am - 2pm with music, market stalls, arts and crafts, face painting, kids rides and entertainment. Add pony rides, petting animals and of course the goat milking demonstration, along with Adam Allsorts the clown, plus a lolly scramble and it sounds like the perfect day out.

Public entry is by gold coin donation which will assist organisers with expenses.

There is also plenty going on all around the township with its Art Gallery, Museum, Boutique Shops, Cafés, Craft Market (in the Town Hall), and Farmers Market. Definitely a date to mark on the calendar.

It’s happening again if the wind stays away! Spring is coming to Oxford in the guise of the ‘Spring into Oxford’ event on Sunday, October 2nd. The event brings a huge selection of entertainment and activities including a display of well cared for and loved, classic and vintage cars in the Oval at Pearson Park for enthusiasts.

Also at Pearson Park, in a huge marquee, the Oxford Spinning Group will demonstrate their skills, and there will be the opportunity of seeing lace making and folk art demonstrations, as well. Of interest to many will be the goat milking techniques on display.

The event is organised by the Oxford Promotions Action Committee as a fund raiser for the Oxford Community Men’s Shed. Men’s Shed Chairperson and car enthusiast Trevor Scott said car clubs from around Canterbury have been invited to attend. “The Clubs really enjoy coming out for the day. It gives

Voting papers have been mailed to registered voters this began on Friday, September 16th. Most Selwyn residents by now have received theirs with all papers expected to be delivered by Friday, September 23rd.

People who have not received their papers by then should contact the Council so that special voting papers can be sent out. Special voting papers can also be collected from the Council’s Rolleston Headquarters or from Darfield, Leeston or Lincoln Library and Service Centres during opening hours.

Voting papers must be received by the council before midday on Election Day, Saturday, October 8th 2016.

The voting papers will use the First Past the Post (FPP) voting system for local Council elections. For the FPP system voters are required to put a tick alongside the candidate(s) they wish to vote for.

In the voting pack, will also be the District Health Board papers which will use the STV voting system to elect its members. For these elections voters rank the candidates they want to vote for in order of preference (ie 1, 2, 3, 4, etc).

Voting papers will contain clear instructions on how to vote.

“Although electoral rolls have now closed, people can still enrol to vote. However, they will need to request special voting papers,” Douglas commented.

“Voting closes at midday on Saturday, October 8th and I would encourage anyone who has not yet registered to do so to cast a special vote. It’s their opportunity to have a say on how Selwyn is run over the next three years.”

To the Editors: To be brutally honest, I don’t have a tremendous amount of interest in the affairs of Council, but an incident or two sprang to mind after reading the ‘Letters to the Editor’ in a recent edition of the Malvern News.

My mind went back to some time between 1995 and the year 2000, and we had been living in our new home for about three years. I had made a street sign at the entrance to our lane as Council had told us it would be two or three years (yes we had already been there for three years) until they got sufficient signs to print, before we got ours. Then a close neighbour told me to phone a bloke called Bill Woods. Cut a long story short a brand new sign was up in three weeks. I’ve never forgotten that.

“The proposed park is the largest remaining parcel of land on this section of the Port Hills and securing it has ensured that it will be retained in perpetuity for the people of Canterbury and beyond. This is something that is really exciting,” said Bill Woods, Woods the president of the Summit Road Society Inc. The purchase was made possible, firstly by the receipt of a legacy from the late Jack Hutchinson; Hutchinson while this was a substantial amount, it was unfortunately not sufficient to purchase any land outright and as the Society lacks sufficient or consistent income, they were unable to service a mortgage.

“With ‘Tussock Hill Farm’ being

available for purchase, I believed we could secure it if the Society used the legacy money, plus any other available accumulated funds,” Bill explained, “and with me making up the required shortfall. By making up this shortfall there would be a proviso that the park would be named after my late wife Linda, Linda who had a passion for the Port Hills and passed away almost 25 years ago.”

The shortfall amounted to over 600,000 dollars including purchase and other costs such as Consents, Survey and those associated with any normal sale and purchase of land.

“The Society agreed to this proposal delegating me to negotiate with the owners,” Bill commented. “After five plus years, with all the necessary procedures in place, the sale can now proceed, creating a new tussock land park that will soon be available for public use on the Port Hills; continuing the dream of Harry Ell,” Bill concluded.

Summer’s almost here and a great way to kick-start it, is by registering to take part in the local Bell Hill Challenge.

This unique event is organised by Race Director and exCoalgate resident Chris Cox and his Avalanche Peak Challenge Inc. enterprise. Chris is also the race Director of the Christchurch Marathon. The Bell Hill Challenge will take place on October 29th in an area of Canterbury High Country already well known for its beauty, but little known for its history.

The Bell Hill Challenge is a scenic twenty kilometre mountain run, or twelve kilometre walk, and will take place in the Selwyn Plantation, in one of the region’s most historic, but hidden landmarks.

The 960 metre high Bell Hill, just past Sheffield, offers views stretching for more than thirty kilometres in all directions and was one of the original landmarks used by early settlers blazing a trail from Canterbury over to the West Coast.

The Challenge starts and finishes at the Ferguson family’s Baldoon Farm on Dalethorpe Road, Annat and usually attracts around 250 entrants. It takes in the Bell Hill Summit, before continuing on a loop around the back country above the Selwyn River. This area is usually closed to the public, so it’s a great chance to experience one of Canterbury’s hidden historic gems, organisers commented.

“It’s an unique running or walking experience, and wonderful training for events like the Kepler Challenge and Coast to Coast, as well as a fantastic event for both serious and recreational/ fitness competitors,” Chris said. “Added to which, it’s a great family day out,” he concluded.

Local boy Jack Dixon, Dixon currently in his final year at St Bedes College in Christchurch, is preparing for his next ‘Canteen Run For A Life’. Jack will be honouring his Dad who passed away from cancer three months ago.

St Bede’s College has been organising the Canteen Run For A Life Fundraiser every two years, since 2002. The run this year will be held from September 22nd to the 26th.

160 students and forty support staff participate in the campaign, being distributed out to eight different locations throughout the South Island: Lawrence, Cromwell, Mount Cook, Haast, Karamea, Nelson, Motueka, and Port Puponga.

The students run from these locations back to St Bede’s College over a five day period, running approximately 25km per runner for five consecutive days.

There will be two teams of runners through Darfield. One will arrive on Sunday, September 25th in the late afternoon, hailing from Cromwell, and stay over in the Darfield Rugby Clubrooms before making its

way to Christchurch the next day. The team that started in Haast will spend the night of Sunday, September 25th at Castle Hill before making its way through Darfield en-route to Christchurch.

“Two years ago I ran from Haast and it was the most gruelling challenge I’ve ever faced, but all for a great cause,” Jack said. “Raising money for teenagers affected by cancer, for teenagers who have cancer, or for those who have lost a parent to cancer.

This year I will be starting my journey from Nelson.

“This campaign is all about helping support those affected by cancer and raising money for

CanTeen in order for those teenagers to not go through the journey alone,” Jack added.

Each runner is expected to gain sponsorship of at least $500 and Jack to date has well surpassed that target.

CanTeen is not a government funded organisation and relies on donations for help.

Regardless of the final amount raised this year, it’s all about just helping those teenagers affected by cancer,” Jack concluded.

The sun is out at last! With the warm weather upon us, it is always great to start spending time out in the garden. Not only are there rewards in growing your own fruit and vegetables, but also loads of therapeutic benefits in tending your garden.

Gardening is a proven stress reliever, as well as a great form of exercise. As physiotherapists, we notice a big increase in gardening injuries at this time of year. The most common complaint? Low back pain. Gardening inevitably involves repeated lifting, bending or leaning forward. We often become so focussed and absorbed in what we are doing, that we stay in bad positions for too long, causing pain or injury.

For this reason it is a good idea to have regular breaks with changes of position and activity. Try to rotate between two or three garden tasks spending ten to fifteen minutes on each activity.

Have a break at least every fifteen minutes and stand with hands on hips and arch your lower back, slightly bending your knees. Do this three to five times. This extension movement reverses the effect of all that bending forward on your lower back and helps to take pressure off the lower back discs.

“Yippee!! Spring is here,” exclaimed staff at Darfield Preschool and Nursery! With warmer days arriving, the children at the Preschool have been eagerly getting the Centre’s gardens organised. Initial plantings have included potatoes, carrots and a range of flowers. Alongside this the children have helped divide last year’s strawberry plants to create new seedlings. They hope this will increase the quantity of strawberries that can be grown and eaten.

“Yum!” The winter crop of leeks have been harvested over the past weeks with many plants being given away to whanau, as well as some being made into leek and potato soup by the children.

children are growing to be keen gardeners, as they willingly participate in preparing the plot, sowing seeds and nurturing the plants. Establishing a healthy appreciation of nature and having an active involvement in the environment links

This year West Melton School sent their very first school band ‘West Junction’ to perform at the Rockshop Bandquest. This was held on Tuesday, September 6th at the Rangiora Town Hall.

‘West Junction’ competed against fourteen other bands from ten schools in the Canterbury area. ‘West Junction’ may not have won, but the

experience of playing live was incredible and all the musicians involved would like to enter again next year.

The bands could choose to sing covers, or original songs, and prizes could be won in vocals, guitar or keyboard, as well as the main prize of Bandquest 2016.

The NZ Breast Cancer Foundation needs local volunteers to help with its Pink Ribbon Appeal on Friday October, 14th and Saturday, October 15th. ‘Give two hours’ is the plea.

All up, 9000 volunteers in the “pink army” will raise money at more than 1000 collection points, covering New Zealand top to bottom. Their efforts will fund research into new personalised treatments, support for women going through breast cancer, medical equipment for hospitals, and life -saving awareness and education programmes around the importance of mammograms for ea rly detection.

The number of women being diagnosed with breast cancer is still going up - it’s now more than 3000 a year - but survival is improving, thanks to earlier detection and improved treatments.

However, the NZBCF’s longterm vision is “Zero deaths from breast cancer”; getting there will mean pushing for new frontiers in early detection,

treatment and patient support.

“We can’t just carry on as we are, when so many women are still dying,” commented Evangelia Henderson, Henderson chief executive of the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. “The future of successful cancer treatment lies in personalised treatment targeted to each individual patient, and we’re determined to help our health system get there. That means not only addressing gaps in the current system through our grants for medical equipment, training of doctors and so on, but also making sure that we get new treatments faster, and that we look at new paradigms for patient support. We’re also

Local Kirwee resident Andrea Reid is taking part in the ‘Pink Star Walk’ to raise money for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. The fundraiser will be held on Saturday, October 29th in North Hagley Park Christchurch. This is an occasion to dig out the pinkest, brightest outfit and join thousands of people to increase awareness of breast cancer.

“Eight women a day are diagnosed with breast cancer in New Zealand. The money raised from my walk will be used to fund vital research projects and support women recovering from, and living with, breast cancer in New Zealand. It costs just $40 to fund two hours of home care or provide four cooked meals for someone living with secondary breast cancer,” Andrea said. “Please consider

funding our best researchers to move into leading-edge studies, such as trials of new DNA tests to identify which personalised treatment is best for a patient.”

The annual Pink Ribbon Appeal funds a large chunk of the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation’s work, and is the most visible of its events in October, which is Breast Cancer Month.

The Glentunnel Playgroup has now been operational for two terms and continues to provide a friendly local meeting point for the preschool families of Coalgate, Glentunnel and Whitecliffs, as well as the wider community.

Earlier this term the group attained Ministry of Education certification which means they will be able to apply for funding toward the much needed storage shed to house toys and equipment. All required to entertain the growing number of 0-5 year olds who visit each

week.

The children have been particularly fond of the messy play options provided each session; with playdough, cloud paint, baking and bubble wrap painting all favourites. The preschoolers also enjoy the company of older children from the school visiting each morning tea time and joining in with them in their play.

Last week families enjoyed an outing to Arion Farm Park organised by Laura Williams.

lucky enough to have a Grandma prepare a wonderful post box activity with a group jigsaw puzzle for each child in each envelope. The post box was used throughout the session for many interesting letters and parcels.

To the Editors: I would like to comment on Trish Taylor Wards’ letter regarding motorists not slowing down for horses being ridden along the road. I am a motorist who does slow down, when I can see them ! Many a time over winter I have been practically on top of horse and rider before applying my brakes, because they have been barely visible. This, of course prompts a filthy look from the rider, who probably considers me ignorant, arrogant or both. I am neither. It is very difficult to spot a rider wearing dark clothes, atop a dark horse, walking along heavily shaded areas next to high hedges, on grey winter days. My suggestion is that all riders out on the road wear reflective jackets or sashes all year round. Trish may well have been wearing one of these, but unfortunately there are actual ignorant, arrogant motorists out there. Riders can improve the situation by making themselves more visible.
