Bridget James from Whitecliffs and Emily Perkins from Hororata, both Year 13 boarders at Christchurch Girls High School recently competed in the 2016 National Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge. Held on August 30th, the event took place at the Manakau IT in Auckland. After weeks of practice and hard work, along with the tutorage of their teacher Holly Caird and professional chef Gary Millar, the pair’s talent and skill saw them reach the finals. They had to prepare four portions each of an entree and a main using New Zealand vegetables and chicken, and all within a ninety minute time period. Each of the nine Regional teams were scored on food

preparation, hygiene, presentation, team work, taste and use of New Zealand produced vegetables and chicken. Both girls performed extremely well under what was definitely intense pressure. The criteria for a gold medal was 90-100 points and Bridget and Emily were awarded 92 points, giving them third overall placing in the competition. All finalists won a Bidvest Voucher worth $500 to assist their in-class training, a pack including a professional chef’s jacket and cap, plus assistance with their travel to the final. The overall winners from St John’s College, Hawkes Bay took away a package worth $17,000.
