News to Lydia: Any changes you plan to initiate?

We have made some minor alterations to the interior of the building - nothing huge but they have created a bit more seating - in what is a small area.

There are menu changes - but we are keeping some of the much loved, favourites. We have added more salad options, along with some healthy lunch meals. We also have dairy free (made with an almond milk and coconut, yoghurt base) smoothies available, and we plan to change the menu as seasonal produce becomes available. This also helps with cost - delivering fresh food at a good price! Check out our amazing brunch menu and make it a date on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

After a busy 6½ years of owning and operating the Darfield Postshop, in Mid West Mews, Heather Clouston is saying goodbye and welcoming new owners, Kirwee’s Simon and Donna Hurndell.

“I will miss a lot of things about being here,” Heather said, ‘but none more so than the people.

It’s been a great job, varied and busy with many changes. One of the first things I did was to sell off the Videos in store and one of the last was to sell off the DVD’s. How technology has changed - with folk using the internet now to access movies etc,” she smiled.

“Apart from that I have just grown and diversified the range of product from that which was originally in-store; I enjoyed the purchasing - a bit like retail therapy,” Heather laughed! “I’m very happy to see Donna and Simon take over the reins, it’s nice that they have local knowledge - a big advantage both for them and for the customers, and I wish them all the best.

New owners, Simon and Donna have been a part of the local community since 1999 and will be known to many from their time as owners of the Topiary Café (located where Scarlett Rose is now). In 2005, and when their daughter Sophie was born, they left the seven day a week café and in the ensuing years owned the Mini Market (where Doughboys is now) until the lease expired, along with their current business Satellite Solutions (providing TV, CCTV and Security expertise to the district). Simon will continue this successful business while Donna, who has spent the past

ten years focussing on being a mum and devoting time to the Kirwee Model School and Kirwee Netball Club, will channel her energies into the Postshop.

Simon will of course, have hands-on involvement in the new business as well, and the couple will be ably supported by the experienced staff they plan to retain.

“I feel we are now ready for a new chall enge,” Donna commented. “I am likely to have Lynn, Lynn Maree and Lesley continuing to work at the

Postshop, so locals can rest assured, they will be dealing with the same happy faces.

“I thank Heather for all her help and assistance with the business changeover and I hope folk will be patient while I get my head around all the different services that are on offer at the Postshop,” Donna commented.

“Heather has done a wonderful job in our community and we wish her all the best, in whatever she pursues in the future,” Donna and Simon concluded.

To the Editors: To the person who pulled out of North Creyke Road, near Darfield, on to SH73 - directly in front of me - at 0800 hours on Monday August 29th.

As a result of your extremely, dangerous, manoeuvre, I was forced to take evasive action to avoid you. The fact that I was towing a trailer with a car attached to it further aggravated the situation whilst travelling at 85 kmph!!

The trailer jack knifed and pushed the car onto the side of the road. It was extremely fortunate I was not facing oncoming traffic!

After discussions with the panel beaters and insurance company, my car has been declared a write off. The chassis is severely bent, the left rear guard is badly damaged and the right rear guard has separated from the car body.

I’m sure you know who you are and I suggest next time you step into your nice white car you take time to examine your driving style and techniques!

The little town of Darfield has been the recipient of some cutting edge health programmes over the past few years. EVERYDAY SUN PROTECTION We only need to wear a sunscreen when the sun is out right? WRONG! The sun sends out different types of radiation that reach the earth - visible light that is seen as sunlight, infrared radiation felt as heat, and ultra violet radiation that we can’t see.

Ultraviolet radiation can be classified as; UVA, these rays account for up to 95% of the UV radiation reaching the earth’s surface and can penetrate clouds and glass, these rays play a major part in skin ageing. UVB, these rays are the chief cause of skin reddening and sunburn, damage which can also lead to premature skin ageing, both UVA and UVB rays have potential to cause skin cancers. UVC; these rays are fully absorbed by the ozone layer and atmosphere.

So even when the sun is not shining these harmful rays are still penetrating and damaging our skin even though you may not be able to see or feel it.

How can I ensure the best protection?

There are two different measures to look out for when purchasing a sunscreen, SPF - sun protection factor and broad spectrum.

SPF is a measurement of a sunscreens ability to prevent UVB radiation from damaging the skin, and measures the UVB radiation transmitted to the skin after applying a sunscreen, for example an SPF of 30 provides thirty times more protection than if you were to not wear a sunscreen.

Broad spectrum is a measurement of a sunscreen’s effectiveness against UVA rays, a broad spectrum sunscreen will provide protection against both UVA and UVB rays, but a sunscreen that has an SPF only and doesn’t mention the term ‘broad spectrum’ may block very little of the UVA radiation, therefore still potentially leaving your skin unprotected.

Choosing a daily moisturiser with a broad spectrum, SPF protection is vital for keeping your skin safe. Not only do the UV rays have potential to cause cancer, but they also damage our healthy skin cells. Six years on from the September 2010 earthquakes the Hororata Community Trust reflects on its achievements and considers the future of two significant building projects it has been working with the community on; the St John’s Anglican Church and Hororata Hall.

“I think after the earthquakes we all had big dreams of having these important community facilities repaired quickly, but the reality is that each project is complex and has a number of stakeholders,” explained Hororata Community Trust Chairman, Richard Lang.

Lang “It is fair to say that the repair of the significant damage to St John’s Church following the 2010 earthquake was a key catalyst for the establishment of the Trust and rebuilding the Church has always been at the top of our agenda, although of course the objects of the Trust cover a range of community projects.”

There is wide community support to see the St John’s building reinstated to its former glory.

“To this end, we have been working with the Anglican Church since the earthquakes and have been in direct discussions with the Church Property Trustees since late 2014,” Richard said. “It is important to us that if the Hororata Community Trust assists with the repair of St John’s Church that it is suitable and available for both Church and community use. We have put two detailed written proposals to the Church Property Trustees, which are being considered.

“They need to complete some internal processes and obtain external advice, and this

process is expected to take time. We are confident that there is a way forward for the St John’s Church.

“While we wait on progress with the repair of St John’s Church, we are looking at other projects to benefit the local community and the repair and redevelopment of the historic but earthquake damaged Hororata Hall is high on the community’s priorities.”

In the meantime, Hororata will continue to etch its place on the map with the Hororata Highland Games which will be held on November 5th at the Hororata Domain. The Games is a big part of the Trust achieving its vision, which is to ‘provide the resources to promote, foster and develop Hororata and its wider community’.

A solution may be in sight for the beautiful, but severely damaged St John’s Church at Hororata.

Clark Land Surveyors Ltd On Sunday, August 21st a group of six students from Darfield High School ventured up to Mt Cheeseman Ski field to participate in the Canterbury Primary and Intermediate Schools’ Ski Champs.

The weather gods weren’t on their side with strong wind gusts playing havoc with the timing lights on the courses and poor visibility in the morning making skiing difficult, even without the wind.

The Year 7/8 competition was not until the afternoon, so the students got plenty of time to get some ski practice in during the morning.

Unfortunately Harry Cookson had a fall on his way up the T bar, breaking his wrist which ended his skiing, before he had had a race.

However the remaining team members: Mari Henderson, Henderson Monique Weber, Weber Tom Freeman, Freeman Maia Adams and Jo Veronese completed their runs over the blue and red courses. A huge number of students entered the event this year; 280 across the age groups and sixty in the

“We want this event to be for the whole community. The more participation the better,” said a spokesperson for the organisers.

The ‘Keep New Zealand Beautiful’ clean up week (September 12th to 18th) takes place annually in September and is the biggest national clean up initiative to take in New Zealand.

Combining the times of the top four skiers for each team resulted in the Darfield Year 7/8 team placing second overall! A creditable result in trying conditions.

The School thanks those parents who transported the students on the day and for managing them through some rather unpleasant conditions.

Last year, over the one week period, more than 610 events took place at beaches, streams, rivers, waterways, parks, recreation areas, highways and town centres.

Heather Saunderson, Saunderson CEO of Keep NZ Beautiful, said that last year over 43,000 passionate volunteers from more than one hundred different areas across the country did their bit to keep their local community beautiful.

Clean up events can be registered to happen in any corner of New Zealand at any time between September 12th to September 18th. Following the lesson, students are encouraged to take part in a clean up of their school, or local area with their classroom. Keep NZ Beautiful has Tidy Kiwi stickers and participation certificates to send out to the first registered schools taking part.

The Scooter Safari is a charity event involving 250 motorised scooters riding 250 kilometres.

They travel Coast-to-Coast over the Southern Alps from Christchurch to Hokitika and raise funds for the New Zealand Cancer Society.

The event, which started in 2009 by Rangiora locals Jayne and Mike Rattray, Rattray has seen four successful rides take place, raising over $600,000.

The Over-The-Alps Scooter Safari was born in support of Mike’s young friend and colleague who was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer.

“We are thrilled to announce that we have reached full capacity at 250 scooters and registrations have now closed for the 2016 Scooter Safari coming up Saturday, September 10th,” commented Jayne.

Each registered rider has their own personal fundraising page with everydayhero. At the time of going to print, fundraising for this year’s ride was at $70,000.

The Scooter Safari is not a race, or for the faint hearted - it is designed to be the coldest, longest, hardest, most gruelling and uncomfortable test of endurance on a city scooter to raise money and awareness for cancer sufferers.

“This is our way of showing some hardship in support of that which cancer sufferers go through during their treatment,” said Jayne.

The ride starts at 9am from Ruapuna with several laps around the track before setting off towards the Alps on State Highway 73 to Hokitika. The Motorsport Park will be open to spectators for a gold coin donation. Many riders dress up and the event is generally quite a spectacle.

“It would be great to get lots of locals out road-side to cheer on our riders,” commented Jayne.

the group are due to arrive at Sheffield’s Famous Pie shop at around 10am for a 45 minute break. Their next stop will be Lake Lyndon, before lunch at Arthur’s Pas s. Kumara Racecourse is next on the itinerary before heading to the Beachfront Hotel in Hokitika.

“Well what can I say other than it was an awesome day,” enthused new Kirwee Tavern publican Steve Evans when

The Tavern was packed to the gunnels for the event and Steve added that it was great to see so many families enjoying the shearing together and helping raise funds for the local Kirwee Volunteer Fire Brigade.

While the final tally up of funds raised hadn’t been done at the time of going to print, Steve was sure it was well over $1,000.

“The event ran like clock work, and we would like to sincerely thank Sean Burgess and Sam Bryan for organising the shearing, George Redmond for supplying the sheep, Ellesmere Transport for transporting them, Frizzell Agricultural Electronics for the digital timer, DJ SinghStar for his excellent commentary, along with Fire Brigade members for all their help. Not forgetting of course thanks to the local community who came along and supported the event and assisted with the fundraising.”

Numerous requests for a repeat of the event have resulted in Steve planning to hold it annually and next year introduce a blade-shearing section. This year those attending saw a blade-shearing demonstration by local Tim O’Donnell - which sparked the interest in adding it at the next event.

The 2016 King of the Bowl Motocross series run by the Canterbury Mini Motocross Club was held over a four month period and consisted of five challenging rounds. The final round was held on Sunday, August 28th at the Club’s, Deans Road, Darfield venue.

The young riders quickly discovered that Motocross (MX) is not always about the fastest rider; over a series like King of the Bowl it is often a battle of attrition and consistency.

Club President Dion Wiremu said, “it has been awesome watching all the kids grow, on and off the track, building new friendships and learning about rivalry and fairness at the same time. MX racers endure a lot of adversity, but when they tough it out, it builds character which will aid them in all facets of life.”

The Canterbury Mini MX Club is now two and a half year’s old and has gone from strength to strength during this time, despite some challenges along the way. “The Club will continue as long as the kids want to ride, and if the popularity of this event is anything to go by we won’t be disappearing any time soon,” Dion stated confidently.

on Thursday, August 25th. A total of 83 schools participated, with 1774 children involved. It was a huge undertaking by organisers to stage such a large, sporting event. The Dunsandel School Year 6 netball team created a small piece of history at the Tournament by being the joint winners of the Year 5/6 netball.

Finishing top of their pool, the team won an overtime semifinal against St Martins. The final went goal for goal against Cust School and ended up an 8-8 draw.

"This is an outstanding

achievement by our players and one they should be very proud of," Principal Dave Robinson said.

The Malvern Primary year 5/6 Rugby Team also had a successful day with only one loss in the tournament. This is a combined team of Kirwee, Darfield, Hororata, Greendale, Glentunnel, Sheffield and Windwhistle schools.

Other local teams to participate in the tournament were Netball, Hockey and Soccer teams, who all represented Malvern admirably.

A group of around twenty Sheffield Garden Club members gathered at the St Ambrose Church hall on a rather chilly day for their August meeting.

Unfortunately our planned speaker for the day was unable to make it at the last minute, so one of our members kindly brought along a selection of wonderful craft items she had made for her own garden. There was a tepee made out of old tree branches which proudly displayed an old tea cup and saucer bird feeder; miniature twig fences for the children to play with; and a creative tree

stump turned into a tic tac toe board. She also showed us how to rejuvenate our old faded solar lights with nail polish, DIY Seed tape and various other quirky bits for us to ponder over. We had some fabulous items that had also been brought along for sale. A selection of wooden items like Rimu chopping boards and trays, outdoor chalkboards and wooden fruit platters made by the men folk at the Oxford Men’s Shed and some very innovative fire starters from Ti Koura Designs who are a Year 13 business studies duo from

Darfield High School. A cuppa and some delicious afternoon tea finished off the afternoon with plenty of time to view the items for sale and have natter.

We look forward to our next outing on Tuesday, September 6th where we are off to visit the garden of Robbie and Val Watson.

Selwyn residents now have access to a convenient free JP (Justice of the Peace) service at Rolleston and Lincoln libraries.

A new JP service is now operating at Rolleston Library every Monday from 12-2pm. An existing JP service is also available at Lincoln Library and Service Centre every Tuesday from 10am-1pm.

Being a JP is a voluntary position and JPs are qualified to certify copies of official documents such as passports, birth certificates, immigration and citizenship papers. They can also witness signatures on documents such as mutual consent divorce papers. It is helpful if people bring photo identification with them to the JP sessions if they have this.

Raj Bedi is a certified JP and a local Rolleston resident who will be at Rolleston Library each Monday lunchtime to offer the new JP service. Raj is an interpreter and speaks fluent Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu and English.

He is also a White Ribbon Ambassador and works as a marriage celebrant.

“I enjoy the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds and cultures as a JP and to assist our community,” Raj added.

Raj also visits the Citizens Advice Bureau at Hornby every Thursday to provide a JP service from 11.30am-1.30pm and commented that people from Rolleston, Templeton and other surrounding areas often visit Hornby, so it seemed like a good idea to offer a service based at

The Silver Fern Railcar will make its way through the area next Tuesday, September 6th with a full load of passengers, en-route to the West Coast and should pass through Darfield mid-morning.

The six day, 1496 kilometre trip, organised by Dunedin Railways sets off from Dunedin on September 5th and returns there on September 10th. On Tuesday, September 6th the railcar will travel through the area from Rolleston, stopping for lunch at Springfield, heading to the West Coast and return through the area on September 9th. It will carry 94 paying passengers and is the first time Dunedin-based trains have ventured over the Southern Alps since a trip by the Otago Excursion Train Trust in 1982. Organisers hope the trip will capitalise on railway nostalgia and an interest in longer excursions.

The trip is part of a new growth strategy introduced since the Dunedin City Council-owned company rebranded as Dunedin Railways last year. The company leased the Silver Fern railcar, which could be used on tracks around the South Island.
