When Darfield High School’s (DHS) Big Band finished their performances at Jazz Quest, held at the start of August they emerged with a Bronze award recognising their talent. The ARA Institute of Canterbury Jazz School contest attracts bands from all over the South Island and is billed as Christchurch's Premier, annual, High School Jazz Band Competition.

It showcases the quality of some of the countries top school jazz bands and musicians.

Bands are awarded gold, silver and bronze awards, and individual musicians are presented awards for outstanding contributions on their instruments, as well as for original compositions and arrangements.

Shin splints are a common overuse condi on in runners, netballers, tennis players and dancers alike. It basically means you have pain in the front of your lower leg, but it’s not actually a diagnosis. The diagnosis of shin splints is one of; medial bial stress syndrome (MTSS), compartment syndrome or a stress fracture. Today we will talk about MTSS as it is the most common shin splint diagnosis and is most easily treated. It is o>en caused from doing too much, too soon. You will o>en develop MTSS when you change your exercise regime; frequency, speed, distance, terrain and/or footwear. e.g. if you have been running on grass then change to running on the footpath you are at risk of developing MTSS. There is much debate on what is happening within the shins in MTSS to cause the pain.

Some say that there are small tears within the muscle that are pulling off the bone, some say that the muscle has kno@ed and becomes inflamed, whereas others suggest the periosteum (a protec ve covering of the bones) is inflamed. Regardless of which of these is happening within the shins, the treatment of MTSS is generally agreed on.

If you develop pain in your shins the best treatment is to stop what you are doing immediately. Ice the area, as this will reduce the inflamma on and pain. It is then advisable to rest completely or reduce your ac vity to allow them to se@le and then gradually get back into that ac vity. Physiotherapy can help manage your condi on, if you need to keep exercising. We can massage your shins, provide strapping and/or ortho cs and show you exercises to help you get over the pain faster. We will help you manage your way back to your chosen ac vity.

The DHS Big Band next made an appearance at Marlborough’s Southern Jam, held between August 10th and 14th. This fun event attracted talent from sixteen schools with performances throughout Blenheim and Picton in schools, bars and restaurants.

These were judged performances, assessed by adjudicators from Ara Institute of Canterbury Jazz School, with a masterclass by these same judges, to follow.

The event closed with a gala performance featuring all schools, the ARA Judges, and winning bands in each category. The DHS Big Band was awarded a Silver for its performance, while band member Holly Kimber received the Robin Randall Award for Most Outstanding Vocalist.

“DHS Big Band consists of fourteen students. Eight of these are in Year 13 and moving on to other endeavours next year, so this year’s results are a credit to the years work put in by these students,” said Rachel Balchin HOD Music, Darfield High School. “I am incredibly proud and honoured to have worked with such dedicated and talented students and to have achieved these fantastic results.

“Next year we will be rebuilding the band with fresh talent coming through,” Rachel concluded.

The children were very excited as this has been a huge topic of interest at our Centre. We also thank all the wonderful parents who came along and supported this event.

When the winners of the Moondance Film Festival Feature Screenplay class were announced, West Melton’s Stephanie Frewen and her cowriter Céline Gibson of Christchurch were amongst them.

This prestigious win will be recognised at an award ceremony to be held in September.

The pair are winners of the Feature Screenplay award for their collaborative screenplay ‘Unit Nine’ in the Moondance International Film Competition 2016, which took place in Boulder, Colorado, USA. “Moondance is recognised as the American Cannes of film festivals,” Stephanie told the News. “For the last sixteen years, the annual Moondance International Film Festival has showcased hundreds of topquality, award-winning, indie films, and hosted filmmakers, writers, composers, actors, industry professionals and media from around the world.”

It was while co-hosting the radio show Writers Block on Plains FM, that the pair realised their writing styles and sense of humour complemented each other. Aside from ‘Unit Nine’ the pair also have other projects in the pipeline.

On Sunday, August 21st the Canterbury Primary Schools’ Ski Championships were held at Mt Cheeseman ski field. In challenging conditions Springfield School pulled off a team win giving them back-toback success following last year’s win of the Championship trophy. The students were appreciative of the training they received from Fiona Stevens and Jamie Prebble prior to the race. The School also thanks Porters Ski Field and Snowvision for supporting the training of the team.

The school’s focus this term is

Wananga - living the school values of respect, trust and kindness.

To this end the school race team paid it forward after their training finished last week by coaching the beginner skiers after their lesson had finished.

Team winning members were Joy Chiles, Michael Weber, Maddison Boekholt and Angus Johnson.

Joy and Michael also achieved first place in their year group.

Congratulations also to Poppy Freeman from Hororata Primary school who was placed in first position in her age group (Years 3 and 4).

DAFFODIL DAY 26th AUGUST This is the display in the window of Mason’s Drapery, Darfield and serves to remind us all that today Friday, August 26th is Daffodil Day. Collectors will be out in force in Darfield and hope that anyone who can, will support the cause. Daffodil Day is the Cancer Society's annual flagship event and one of the most important fundraising and awareness campaigns in the country. As well as providing an opportunity to raise awareness of cancer in New Zealand, Daffodil Day is a major funding source for the Cancer Society. The daffodil is one of the first flowers of spring, whose bright yellow blooms remind everyone of the joys the new season will bring. It represents the hope there is for the one in three New Zealanders affected by cancer. Donations received go towards vital scientific research into the causes and treatment of all types of cancer, as well as providing a wide range of support services, information, health promotion and education programmes to reduce cancer risk, awareness campaigns and programmes for people affected by cancer.

Two exciting opportunities for young people to develop new skills are now open for applications.

The Selwyn Youth Council is hosting a Youth Leadership weekend for twenty young people aged 13-15 at Wainui Camp on Banks Peninsula on the weekend of September 24th and 25th.

The weekend is an opportunity to get to know other young people, develop new skills, be empowered to make positive changes in the community and be mentored by young leaders.

The camp is free with transport to and from Rolleston provided.

The project has received a grant from the Ministry of Youth Development.

“The Selwyn Youth Council are very excited to be running the Youth Leadership Weekend,” commented Selwyn Youth Council Chairperson Emily de Rooy.

She said the camp is a great opportunity for youth to develop leadership skills and identify their passions which they can use to implement projects which will benefit the community in the future.

“If you are keen to learn some great new skills and get to know some of the Youth Councillors from this year’s Youth Council I would highly recommend applying for this fantastic opportunity,” she stated.

Young people from 15-19 can also apply to join a Youth in Emergency Services camp happening from September 26th - 30th at Waipara Adventure Centre. The camp is

a combined initiative by the Waimakariri, Hurunui and Selwyn Youth Councils.

Emergency Services including the NZ Fire Service, Red Cross, NZ Police, Coastguard, St John and New Zealand Land Search and Rescue will attend the camp. Camp participants will have the chance to find out more about their work, learn new skills including hands on activities, and meet new friends.

Following the camp, young people also spend three months volunteering with the emergency service of their choice. The volunteering is after hours for a few hours per week.

“The annual grafting day is almost upon us. This is a practical workshop where grafting will be demonstrated, and you’ll have the chance to practice, and obtain scion wood to graft onto your home orchard,” said a spokesperson from Two Rivers Community Trust.

Grafting is the process of adding other varieties to an existing tree. While it is much simpler than many people expect, learning techniques and the care of the grafts is essential. Grafting has many advantages, such as

increasing the varieties of fruit without having to buy more trees; having successive ripening on the same tree; having a pollinator on the same tree; the ability to ‘change the fruit’ of a poorly performing tree.

There is nothing quite like picking fruit from a home orchard that has been tree ripened, and with no or minimal sprays. Apples, pears, peaches, nectarines, plums are all easily grafted.

“For example, you may have a Royal Gala, and you could add some Granny Smith, Red

Delicious or Sturmer, giving you a longer fruiting season, without having to plant another tree. Or how about transforming that wild plum the birds sowed, into a productive triple graft Green Gage/Coes Golden Drop/Duffy’s Early Jewel.

“We focus on fruit, but flowering cherries are also an option.”

For anyone interested in home grown fruit and who would like to learn about grafting or improve their grafting skills, then this group would welcome you. There will be experienced people on hand to help. A pair of secateurs and a grafting knife is necessary, but experienced group members can assist with adapting a thin bladed, sharp vege knife for the purpose.

Selwyn MP Amy Adams commented that local parents will be happy to hear that more of Selwyn’s local students are gaining their NCEA Level 2, than ever before.

In 2015, 89.9 per cent of Selwyn’s eighteen-year-olds achieved NCEA Level 2, up nearly three percentage points from the 2014 results. This means that in both years the performance of Selwyn students exceeded the Government Better Public Services target of 85 per cent.

"This means good things for the futures of local kids. Our teachers and students are

working hard and the results are showing,” Amy said.

“I am particularly pleased to see that the achievement rate for our local Māori students has risen by 8.5 percentage points compared to 2014, meaning that 85.4 per cent of Māori students aged eighteen achieved NCEA Level 2 last year,” Amy added.

“The Public Achievement Information tells us that, in 2015, 83.3 per cent of eighteen-year-olds achieved NCEA Level 2 across New Zealand - that’s about 38,000 more kids than in 2008 achieving a qualification which

They are currently establishing a seed bank for sharing seeds, and at their September meeting will learn about good soil nutrition.

Federated F armers h as developed a new service and compliance package for Selwyn farmers to help them tiptoe through the new regional council rules for land and water.

Under the new rules for land and water in Selwyn District, Environment Canterbury has identified ‘Sediment/ Phosphorous Runoff Risk Zones’ which cover both the foothills and heavier land around Te Waihora.

All farmers in those zones will require resource consent, even if nitrogen losses are below 15kg/ha/yr.

Federated Farmers North Canterbury president Lynda Murchison commented that this rule change is likely to affect 350 - 400 farmers in this area.

“We’ve turned our attention to helping farmers get the paperwork in place; and have developed a new service and compliance package for Selwyn farmers,” Lynda said.

“The package is open to anyone, with an attractive discount for Feds members.”

Feds is holding a meeting at the Coalgate Tavern on Tuesday, September 6th to explain more

about how the new package will work.

They are inviting anyone interested to come and find out about the new package and meet Federated Farmers chief executive Graham Smith and John Sunckell, Sunckell a local candidate for Environment Canterbury.

“This is a meeting you cannot afford to miss. Spread the word and get your neighbours along – it’s open to all, members and non-members,” Linda concluded.

Selwyn District Council - Rates Rebate If you claim your rebate every year, don't expect to just go to a Service Centre and have it processed.

You now ring for appointments during the 4 hrs a week when they accept them.

I completed my form, took it to Darfield on. Big mistake - I was told, "go home, telephone and make an appointment for either T uesday or T hursday", someone absolutely nothing else at the time!

The reason for the change; "it's a new policy, to make things more efficient".

More efficient for whom??

Certainly not for ratepayers like me, who live many, many kilometres from Darfield, Lincoln or Leeston Service Centres.

I spoke to Rolleston about this ludicrous decision, and discovered that I am not the only person to complain.

It is about time the Council employed people with an I.Q. higher than the height of their chairs, then maybe we would see real efficiency, cost saving and service for the poor ratepayers who pay their salary.

The much looked forward to ‘Take a Kid Fishing’ event will again take place at the Groynes Picnic grounds on Sunday, October 26th.

Ex-Glentunnel resident Dave Denton is still involved with the popular event and looks forward to seeing plenty of Malvern youngsters enjoying themselves on the day.

The Take a Kid Fishing day is free and will be held whether it’s wet or fine. The Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust has again generously donated hundreds of salmon which will be released into the lakes at the Groynes. No registration or fishing licence is necessary (Fish and Game provide a whole-ofsite licence for the day). Adults

may assist but are not permitted to fish.

There are also caravans on site with food and drinks for sale.

Between 9am and 12pm the event is for children twelve years and under. One lake is especially for under eights, where each child has a short one-on-one session with an expert angler (organisers advise there is sometimes a queue for this). There are some rods, tackle and bait for loan in the morning, for those who don’t have any gear. At all four lakes, skilled anglers from fishing clubs will be there to give advice and help.

With it being a stunning Winter’s day and the awesome Olympics on television, we wondered if we would get a good number at our August mee ng, but being the keen folk we are, the turnout was very good. Our speakers for the day were Sue and Kate from ‘Behind the Hedge’ at Rangiora. The girls have spoken at our mee ngs before, but they are always a drawcard with their presenta on and easy style. Their knowledge is huge and they were very generous in their telling of a few tricks of the trade to assist us in growing plants. They are alpine enthusiasts and have an extensive understanding of these delicate plants. They surprised us by telling us of the huge prices you can pay for bulbs, so you really need to care for them.

They also recommended dried blood, not blood and bone, for plants not flowering well, you will no ce a difference very quickly. Their advice was feed, feed, feed, so no excuses for poor shows in the garden. There was quite a scramble for their sales’ table a>er the talk, and many members went home clutching a li@le treasure for their own gardens. There was a very good display on the show tables, especially for the me of year. The decora ve table had some stunning displays and the results were very close. The new trophies we had acquired to commemorate our 70th anniversary last year were on display and looked great. So all in all a very good mee ng, next month is our Spring Show, so we are really on our way towards Summer, can’t wait for happy days in the gardens again.

It was a well filled train that started out this morning for the official opening of the Otira tunnel 5½ miles long.

The West Coasters met the train at Arthur’s Pass and gave the East Coasters a rousing reception. The train went through the tunnel in 15 minutes. There was a fair amount of noise. The Prime Minister, Mr Massey said it was a great pleasure to think that this little country had the longest tunnel in the British Empire and the seventh longest in the world. Kipling said “east is East and West is West and never the twain shall meet” but Kipling did not know New Zealand.

The minister of Public Works and Railways Mr Coates, Coates said the completion of the tunnel ranked high among the world’s engineering feats. At a banquet in Christchurch Mr Massey said the splendid teams of horses, well equipped coaches and the courageous and skilled men who drove the coaches from one side of the Island to the other would not for long be forgotten.

A public holiday on the West Coast will be observed in honour of the opening of the tunnel.
