A@er fourteen years in our liAle office the Malvern News team has relocated across the road to 62 South Terrace (ex Farmlands Real Estate office and on the western side of the Bakery). We cannot thank those who assisted with our move enough - it wasn’t just boxes carried over the road, it was a fairly massive logis cal opera on involving equipment, servers and networking. While there are s ll a few glitches to iron out and the interior of the office looks akin to a jumble sale, we are rela vely close to being fully up and running again. Our old building is to be removed from its site, as is the old ski shop building alongside - all this will take place very soon (separately - and not by the same people). For now though we are seAling into our new home but please bear with us if we can’t immediately do/ locate something you require. Once again a HUGE thanks to all those who assisted many going above and beyond the call of duty what a great community we live in ☺

Darfield St John Youth Division was well represented at the Canterbury District competitions held on August 7th, in Christchurch. As well as providing judges, patients and marshalls, Darfield had two intermediate teams, one senior individual and a colour party competing. Once again, they all performed at a high standard and made Darfield proud. The colour party performed outstandingly and were placed second. The intermediate teams were placed: first overall (Jenny Jenny, Jenny Charlotte, Charlotte Samuel and Rebecca) Rebecca and second overall (Niamh Niamh, Niamh Zahara, Zahara Emily and Amanda), Amanda while Hannah Ireland, Ireland was placed second overall in the senior individual section. A real credit to all the hard work and
dedication contributed at trainings over the last few months, by cadets and leaders. The teams and Hannah will now go on to represent Canterbury District at the Regional Competitions, which are to be
held on the weekend of September 23rd to 25th at Glentui. “Now the training really begins,” added Lynda Walter Division manager, “ and we wish them all well,” she concluded.

This year the meeting will be held in the afternoon rather than in the evening, and will conclude with afternoon tea. We shall also have an excellent speaker from Nurse Maude in attendance. Development Manager. She will be giving us an overview of the services provided by this well-known organisation. The ‘Friends’ is a registered Charitable Trust, and was initially set up some thirty years ago, to provide for Darfield Hospital any extra items and equipment, which will enhance patient care, comfort and treatment. When the New Zealand Blood Service (NZBS) come to Darfield on August 23rd they are sincerely hoping they can attract some new donors donors who can save the lives of those in critical need. “We need lots of donors and are appealing to the community to help us,” said the NZBS Donor Recruiter, Jules Askin. Askin “There is currently an international campaign called ’Missing Types’ that we are also participating in and so any donors able to assist from Darfield and the surrounding areas would be gratefully appreciated,” Jules added. With the thought provoking title of “With y_ur help, we c_n fill the g_ps” the NZBS comment that, “People rarely think about their blood type - but what if that ‘type’ was to go missing in everyday life?” They are currently looking for 10,000 people (between sixteen and 65) to step-up and register to become first-time donors and add that A and O blood types are always the most in demand. That’s why their recruitment drive team, along with supporting businesses, charities and celebrities have removed all the ’A’s and the ’O’s from their signatures, brands and logos etc to recognise these missing types. NZBS National Manager Marketing and Communications, Asuka Burge commented, “it is an ambitious goal but we are seeking 10,000 first time blood donors to join our life saving team. In New Zealand, 85 per cent of the population has A and O blood types, which means these groups are most in demand. Even if someone
doesn’t know their blood type, there is a very good chance they can help. Simply by registering on our website (nzblood.co.nz/Missingtype) a first time donor is taking the first step to finding out their blood type and how best they can help. “New and young donors are the key to safeguarding New Zealand’s future blood supply and we want this campaign to encourage more people to find out if they are eligible and register to become a blood donor.” Currently less than four per cent of eligible New Zealanders donate blood. There is no alternative for patients in need of blood or blood products. Put simply, blood donors save lives. NZBS currently has a database of 110,000 amazing blood donors who last year saved the lives of about 42,000 kiwis. But
every year around 28,000 people leave the donor registry. "Donors are lost due to a variety of reasons; from personal choice, to no longer meeting the eligibility criteria, or to ill health and retirement. Whatever the reason, it means there is a constant need for new donors. So far this year we already have around 9,600 new donors, through various different initiatives, we also expect to successfully reinstate about 10,000 lapsed donors. This leaves a disparity of around 10,000, which is the number of donors we hope to attract with this campaign . Working together we can ensure we continue to save lives now and into the future,” Asuka concluded.

Earthquake strengthening work is to be completed on part of the Darfield Library and Service Centre building beginning on Monday, August 22nd. The work will occur on the oldest part of the library which is used as meeting space, the entrance foyer and a storage area. Extra bracing will be added to this area and this work is expected to take around one month. While the work occurs, the library and service centre meeting rooms will be temporarily unavailable. The library and service centre will remain open during the work with normal hours however library access will be via a ramp from the side carpark. Library and service centre customers will need to park at the front of the building (two mobility car parks will also operate near the ramp). The after-hours return box will remain accessible while work takes place. The library and service centre building was c o n st r uc t e d i n t hr e e stages. The original building, constructed prior to 1983, occupies the western area of the building and is currently used as community meeting room space, entrance and storage areas. The building was extended in 1983 to include the area facing the State Highway which is used
for brochure and council information display, seating and a new workspace for staff. The larger main library area where books are displayed, additional seating is provided and the children’s area is located was built in 2010. The area of the library identified as requiring earthquake strengthening in an assessment is the portion of the roof of the original part of the library building. “The engineers’ report did not consider that there was any reason for the library to be closed to the public, but did recommend that
strengthening work be undertaken in the future on the original older section of the building,” said Douglas Marshall, Marshall Selwyn District Council’s Property and Commercial Manager. “The report did not identify any concerns with the rest of the library building,” he added. Groups who use the library meeting space have been contacted by library and service centre staff to let them know about the planned work so that they can find alternative meeting venues, such as the Darfield Recreation and Community Centre.

Selwyn is a great place to live according to 94% of Selwyn residents surveyed recently. The finding was part of a Council satisfaction survey carried out by independent research company Versus. In this year’s survey, 65% of residents rated the council’s overall performance as good or very good, up from 60% in 2015. Overall, 21 of the 26 Council services surveyed received ratings of 50% or higher, with seven rated above 75%. Five services recorded ratings below 50%. More than half the 26 services surveyed maintained their satisfaction rating or recorded an increase from last year. The single biggest rise in satisfaction was for urban roads, which increased from 49% last year to 58%. Community facilities like libraries, community centres and parks are well used by Selwyn residents, with 82% of residents visiting a park within the past year, 64% visiting a library and 63% using a public hall or recreation centre. Rubbish and recycling collection were the Council’s top performing services and were rated as very good or good by 94% and 92% of residents respectively. Other services that

Small Mature Wood Lots and Shelter Belts Selwyn District Council has launched a new campaign to remind motorists of the dangers of driving while using a phone. Advertisements and billboards will promote the drive phone free message to Selwyn residents. Using a mobile phone increases the risk of a crash greatly. According to the New Zealand Transport Agency drivers who text on a mobile phone while driving are 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash than drivers who were focussed on the road. It has been illegal for motorists to use a hand-held mobile phone while driving in New Zealand since November 2009. Drivers cannot use a hand-held mobile phone; • to make, receive, or terminate a telephone call • to create, send or read a text message or email

video message. Breaching these rules can result in a fine of $80 and twenty demerit points. Selwyn Road Safety Coordinator Ngaire Tinning stated that using a mobile while driving is unsafe and puts the driver, their passengers and other road users at risk. “Motorists need their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road to be able to navigate the road safely. We also encourage people to avoid using any type of phone in a vehicle as motorists need to be able to concentrate on driving without distraction,” she said. “Unfortunately it’s common for people to use mobile phones while driving even though it’s against the law,” she added. “I would urge people who see their friends

The Horse’s Back Performance and Therapy is a practical seminar to be held at the Dressage Academy in Burnham on September 17th. It will bring those attending up close and personal to the horse’s spine and pelvis, and give an in-depth understanding of the structure and movement of this critical part of the equine athlete’s anatomy. It will also assist with understanding the key biomechanical principles, the impact of conformation, and how they cause common back problems. Using the latest in training methods and physiotherapy techniques could help eliminate, manage or correct potential or actual back problems. There will be the opportunity to ask questions about a horse’s back from Nicolett Geldermann and Dr. Guy Alexander, Alexander and the seminar will include presentations, a skeletal display, ridden and in-hand demonstrations. Nicolett is an Equine Physiotherapist, who has just returned from Germany having completed her latest continuing professional development refreshing her skills in 'Manuelle Therapie' and mobilisation/ manipulation techniques. Guy has a broad range of experience in equine surgery and lameness diagnosis gained in many countries and is one of the most qualified vets in New Zealand for neck, back and pelvis problems. The Rakaia Lions and Sports Clubs are again banding together to offer families and individuals a fun day of fitness on October 8th. The Jackson Holmes Salmon Run held in 2015 was a huge success giving organisers the confidence to run another such event. The event includes a multi-sport, duathlon x2, running x2 and a fun walk utilising the Rakaia River and riverbed, It all takes place on the same day and all sections start and finish at the Rakaia
Domain. “We wanted to make sure this event was inclusive to nearly everyone including families, that’s why we introduced the fun walk,” said a spokesperson for the organisers. “The overall event targets the masses and caters to competitive, noncompetitive and teams; it can be as challenging as participants wish to make it. “So far we have already received entries from Ashburton, Balclutha, Christchurch, Darfield, Harihari,
Rakaia, Rolleston and Timaru which is amazing and such a great start.” “With the support of our wonderful sponsors we are handing out some amazing spot prizes, and everyone who enters any of the Jackson Holmes Salmon Run events will go in the draw to win.” Any funds raised will remain in the local Rakaia community.

Darfield High School v Adams Grammar School (from Shropshire, England). Adams played Darfield as part of their three week rugby tour to Hong Kong and NZ. There were 47 boys in the tour group who were billeted by families from Darfield High School. The games were held on Thursday, August 4th at Darfield High School in very wet and cold conditions. Results: 1st XV - Darfield won 10-7. 2nd XV - Adams won 13-8 Both games were close and massive efforts from both teams. Congratulations to all those involved, and a massive thank you to all those who hosted the students. The sportsmanship and spirit displayed was outstanding.

Construction of the new multipurpose Dunsandel Community Centre has officially started with a ground-breaking ceremony at the site. Selwyn MP Hon Amy Adams was on hand to turn the first sod on the project, which will replace the former Dunsandel Hall. The hall was severely damaged in the September 2010 earthquake, and demolished in 2012, although planning for a new facility had commenced prior to the earthquake. Building will start later this month and the work is due to be finished in May 2017. The work is happening either side of the local rugby season. The new facility is located at the Dunsandel Domain, adjacent to the existing Sports Centre, and will enhance the “sports focussed hub” in the area by encouraging more informal recreation and social activities, according to Russell Dalzell, Dalzell chair of the Dunsandel Community Committee. “The community has worked closely with Selwyn District
Council to develop a vision for a new centre that can become the hub of the community for generations to come,” he said. “It’s exciting to see the start of a new facility that will cater for the township’s growth. It will comfortably accommodate all sorts of activities from school end-of-year assembly and fundraising events to club and community group meetings, business events, functions and much more.” Douglas Marshall, Marshall Selwyn District Council Property and Commercial Manager, commented that the need to replace the earthquakedamaged hall gave the township a unique opportunity to build a more modern facility. “Like many Selwyn townships, Dunsandel was well served by its traditional hall for many decades - but today we are seeing communities looking for more flexible, multi-purpose facilities in keeping with current and future needs. This will be a great asset to Dunsandel and to the wider Selwyn
community.” The new centre, which has a total cost of $3.4 million, will feature a multi-purpose hall for up to 250 people, including reception area and dedicated meeting and training room space. It can be divided if needed and will have kitchen and bar facilities, an office and storage space. Outside, the building will have terraces around it for watching sport and the northern side will be landscaped and designed for outdoor gatherings. Arrow International was appointed construction contractor in June. Funding for the project is from a variety of sources including grants, insurance, reserve funds, development contributions and a loan to be funded by a targeted rate. Community fundraising is also a major contributor to the facility.

Malvern Netball Representative players have won the Malvern versus Hurunui Netball Shield this year, for the first time since 2007, due to winning three out of the five games.
