fifteen points over defending champs, West Melton. Darfield took the bronze position.

Colourful (you’ll have to believe us in this) chorus rendition of ‘Consider Yourself’ - toe tappingly great!

Although it was the dress rehearsal prior to opening night, the pre-performance excitement was palpable as the lights dimmed and the opening scene got underway.

This was of course the Kirwee Players for eth birthday produc on and the second me they have undertaken to entertain the community with a performance of Oliver.

The Show contains the biggest cast ever - 57 members - primarily from the Selwyn area and while for some it’s their first ever experience of the Players, for others (Malcolm Begg, along with Isabelle and David StoJ) it’s their for eth show. The cast encompasses a wide age range - the youngest being eight, with the most senior at seventy seven.

This Show has the same direc ng crew as last year (Grease): Director - Phil Dean, Musical Director - Darren Weber and Choreographer - Anna Randall - proving just how much they enjoy the Players’ experience. The desire for the Players’ experience is clearly evident throughout the cast, with numerous family groups par cipa ng in one role or another - the StoI family have three genera ons involved!

The story of Oliver is a well known one and really does have something for everyone; wonderful music, adventure, a love story, tragedy and hilarity, all topped off with the perfect ending.

“Our Oliver (Katrial Thomas) and Dodger (Oscar Gosling) are both new to the stage, but will blow you away with their talent,” commented Kirwee Players publicist Courtney Hyde. “At ten and eleven years old respec vely, you would never know they haven’t performed in such a large produc on before.”

Sadly this reviewer wasn’t able to view the whole performance leaving a:er aIemp ng unsuccessfully to curb an outbreak of coughing, the last ves ge of a hard to shake-off winter lurgy, but what I did experience was a definite taste of another fabulous and entertaining show.

SYNOPSIS...

A young woman in labour makes her way to a parish workhouse and dies a:er giving birth to a boy, who is systema cally named Oliver Twist (Katriel Thomas) by the workhouse authori es. As the years go by, Oliver and the rest of the child inmates suffer from the callous indifference of the officials in charge. At the age of nine, the hungry children draw straws; Oliver loses and has to ask for a second helping of gruel (“Please sir, I want some more”).

For his impudence, he is promptly appren ced to the undertaker Mr. Sowerberry (Nick Mohi), from whom he receives somewhat beIer treatment. However, when another worker maligns his dead mother, Oliver flies into a rage and aIacks him.

Oliver runs away to London. The ArQul Dodger (Oscar Gosling), a skilled young pickpocket, no ces him and takes him to Fagin (Edward StoJ), an old man who trains children to be pickpockets. Fagin sends Oliver to watch and learn as Dodger and another boy try to rob Mr. Brownlow (Elton Hyde), a rich, elderly gentleman. Their aIempt is detected, but it is Oliver who is chased through the streets and arrested. Fortunately, a witness clears him.

Mr. Brownlow takes a liking to the boy, and gives him a home. Oliver experiences the kind of happy life he has never had before, under the care of Mr. Brownlow and the loving housekeeper, Mrs. Bedwin (Linda Gosling).

Fagin’s associate, the vicious Bill Sykes (Jeremy Smith), and Sykes’ kind-hearted girlfriend, Nancy (Clare Hamilton), run into Oliver on the street and forcibly take him back to Fagin. Nancy feels pangs of guilt, so she finds Mr. Brownlow and offers to return Oliver to him in secret. The suspicious Fagin, however, follows her, becomes enraged and murders her.

The killing brings down the wrath of the public on the gang. Mr. Brownlow and the authori es rescue Oliver, while Sykes is shot and killed. Fagin and his other associates are rounded up. Oliver is happily reunited with his newly found grandfather and Mrs. Bedwin, his search for love ending in fulfilment.

Urchin-haired ‘Oliver’ was a delight and the arrival through the audience of the younger members of cast was a pleasing addi on. The colourful chorus scenes with their blend of voices was wonderful and the toe tapping rendi on of ‘Consider Yourself’ had everyone smiling and singing along. I well remember the 1994 performance of Oliver (I may even have been in it!) and while this was very different - it was equally entertaining. The Kirwee Community Hall is a warm and invi ng venue on a winter’s evening and the massive improvements in ligh ng, sound and accompaniments make the 2016 Oliver different on another level again from the 1994 version.

Seats to performances have been selling fast with a couple of performances already sold out and some others close. See the adver sement in this issue for details of how to secure ckets for Oliver and be prepared to be well and truly entertained.

Springfield resident, Nicky Snoyink, Snoyink has announced she will be a candidate in the upcoming ECan election. She will stand in the mid-Canterbury constituency which includes both the Selwyn and Ashburton Districts.

This will be the first time since 2007 that voters have had the opportunity to elect their representatives.

Nicky’s vision is to, “promote change so future generations will have the opportunity to enjoy rivers and lakes, and swim, boat and fish in clean and abundant water. I will to work to ensure all communities will have access to safe drinking water.”

Nicky was born in Darfield, attended Darfield Primary and High Schools, and studied Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management at Lincoln University. She worked at the Mount Hutt Ski Area, travelled and worked overseas, as well as for the Department of Conservation, before managing a lodge at Arthur’s Pass. While at Arthur’s Pass, she began work in nature tourism, which led to a twenty-year long career in New Zealand and overseas, as a self-employed guide.

In 2004 Nicky returned to the Selwyn District, choosing Springfield as a base, from where she runs her nature tourism business. She is a member of the Springfield Volunteer Fire Brigade.

Nicky Snoyink - surrounded by alpine terrain. environment, particularly Canterbury’s water issues, prompted Nicky to return to study in 2014 to complete a Master of Environmental Policy at Lincoln University. This study focussed on key environmental legislation and New Zealand’s planning system.

“The quality of New Zealand’s environment underpins the success of New Zealand’s economy,” Nicky said. “Farming and tourism are our two biggest earners and they both depend on our natural environment.”

Understanding how environmental policy and planning decisions are made was the main reason for returning to Lincoln University.

“This understanding combined with my work experience gives me the necessary skills to be a

Regional councillor,” Nicky added.

“Growing up in mid-Canterbury, the Waimakariri, Selwyn/ Waikirikiri and Rakaia rivers defined my childhood recreational activity and shaped my career in nature tourism,” Nicky said. “Back then, clean water was taken for granted. We need to change priorities and polices so we can once again have abundant, clean water in our rivers.”

While water is the main focus, Nicky also recognises Environment Canterbury’s key leadership role in regional planning, consents and compliance, transportation, air quality, biodiversity and biosecurity, and natural hazard management across the region, from the mountains to the sea.

SNOWDROP SUNDAY Every year there are four ‘Open Garden’ days for visitors at Terrace Station. These are held on the second Sundays in August, September, October and November. Although it’s August the spring flowers are already showing their faces.

The artists exhibiting are: Nicole Bourke attended the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts from 2005 - 2011.

Her first solo exhibition was at the CoCA in Christchurch and since then she has exhibited in group shows both in New Zealand and Australia. Her work is also held in many private collections. Nicole’s art practice is a process of scientific experimentation and examination and she is fascinated by the complex patterns and details inherent in microphotographs of the natural and the cellular. This recent series of studies on paper explore microscopic imagery of viruses and diseases using a variety of mediums and techniques. The works capture HIV, cancer cells, tuberculosis, influenza, zika and swine flu in a realistic way as seen under a microscopic lens but they do take on an abstract nature as the imagery is morphed and takes on a life of its own.

Jo Ogier focuses on the natural world around her and reflects her strong conservational and ecological ties with it. After graduating from the Otago Polytechnic School of Art in 1993 with a Diploma of Fine Arts with Honours, Jo undertook a Graduate Diploma in Plant and Wildlife Illustration at the University of Newcastle, NSW in 1995. In 2000 she completed her Master of Fine Arts at Otago. Along with being fortunate to have been the

Sandra Thomson graduated from the University of Canterbury’s School of Fine Arts with a Diploma in printmaking (Honours) in 1981. Since then her work has featured in a number of solo and group exhibitions, nationally and internationally.

Sandra is currently teaching drawing and printmaking at Ara, school of Art and Design.

She has worked predominately as a printmaker favouring woodcut and screen printing on fabric. Over the last five years the focus has been solely on drawing, making drawings for their own sake. This culminated in Sandra’s last solo exhibition Waiting at City Art Depot, Christchurch (2015).

A great night was had by all last Saturday evening as senior pupils of Darfield High School dressed in their finery to enjoy the School’s annual Formal.

Praise for the event’s organisation was heard from all quarters and congratulations for its success go to the Formal Committee (Anna Anna Hurst, Hurst Mariah Glasson, Glasson India Perrie, Perrie Olivia Shinn, Shinn Eddie Searle, Searle Courtney Townsend, Townsend Caitlin Thistoll, Thistoll Kaitlin Feast, Feast Emma Harding and Chloe Walker), Walker along with Todd Adams and Shawn Gough, Gough the PTSA and DJ Singhstar.

The theme for the Formal was ‘Great Gatsby’ and the School’s hall was decorated to reflect this.

“The night went very smoothly,” commented a member of the organising committee Courtney Townsend, Townsend “everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and have a great time. There were many photo opportunities, a delicious supper, lots of people out on the dance floor and the fabulous decorations and atmosphere really set the scene for what was a wonderful night,” she concluded.

The much-looked-forward-to Country Fair and Crafts Day will once again return to Trinity Church, Darfield on Saturday morning, September 24th (see advertisement in this issue for further details).

Both the Church and the Church Hall, as well as the lawn in front of the Church, will host a variety of stalls and vendors.

This year will see quite a number of new stalls inside and outside Trinity Church, with the

White Elephant stall having expanded so much, it’s become the White Elephant Hall! It’s moved over the road to the Trinity Church Hall, on the corner of Greendale and McLaughlin’s Roads.

There will be plenty of used furniture on offer this year too, sheltered under the car port on the Church grounds. Used books are another very popular stall and they too have moved to a larger space, and are now

housed in another room in the Church. The main stalls, both inside and outside the church building, will be joined this year by the Darfield Community Market. Those attending this year’s Country Fair and Craft day will find crafts, food, baked goods, furniture, antique stalls, wool and knitted apparel, toys, plants and used books - in fact definitely something for everyone.

New & Near New The July school holidays were no excuse for children to be bored in Selwyn. They had the chance to join in more than fifty local events happening as part of KidsFest from July 9th to the 23rd. Around 800 children joined a range of fun activities hosted by the Council and Selwyn Libraries.

“Rogaine rampage at Glentunnel, which allows kids to use GPS devices to hunt for clues, was really popular,” said Dave Tippett, Tippett the Council’s Recreation Advisor. “The sessions are great for helping kids develop team work, GPS and orienteering skills while getting some exercise and having fun. Our high ropes sessions at Rolleston were all fully booked as well and were a great way for adventurous kids to take up a challenge in a safe environment.”

Dave commented that other sessions proving popular were the Sport Suzie’s Circus, Comedy and Chaos Show, a KidsFest market at Lincoln and landscape art and keyboard classes. “Next year we hope to offer more art and keyboard classes as these were fully booked this year,” he added.

The Hororata Highland Games excitedly announce that Gough Cat will be sponsoring the event as the official Heavy Competition partner for the next three years.

“This is a key partnership for the event; Gough Cat’s investment will allow us to continue to grow and deliver a world class competition for the Scottish Heavy athletic event.

There is a natural synergy between the Gough CAT brand and the Heavy events; power, strength and being at the top of your game to succeed,” said Hororata Highland Games Event Manager, Cindy Driscoll.

Driscoll Scottish heavy athletics owes its roots to the Highland warriors who would keep in shape between battles by competing amongst themselves with everyday implements. A stone, a blacksmith’s hammer, a tree trunk (caber) became tools for building strength for battle.

Chief Operating Officer - Gough Group, Gl enn Stap leto n commented, “This event is extremely popular with many Gough Cat customers, and potential customers, providing an excellent stage to engage with them in an unique and fun

setting. While we have invested in the event financially, we are also looking at ways we can add to the entertainment of the day and ultimately be part of its success.”

The event attracts some of the best professional heavy athletes in the world who will compete in the Gough Cat Oceania Heavyweight Championship. This competition provides all day entertainment for the crowd as these guys battle for the championship over the eight disciplines which test their strength, athleticism and sheer willpower.

Alongside the professionals, the Gough Cat Amateur Hororata Highland Games Championship allows men and women the opportunity to develop their skills in this sport.

Cindy explained some of the ways the Gough Cat partnership is allowing the Hororata Highland Games to grow the Heavy Competitions; “we are committed to providing a pathway into this sport, which can take competitors all over the world, and the support of Gough Cat has enabled us to provide a training opportunity

for amateur men and women who want to receive expert coaching in four of the heavy athletic disciplines. We are very lucky to have eighteen times New Zealand Highland Heavy Events Champion, Pat Hellier and Olympic Games athlete (Javelin 1992) and coach of Valerie Adams (2004 - 2008), Kirsten Hellier, Hellier coming down from Auckland to coach this amateur training day.”

This day is perfect for anyone who would like to experience what is involved in Heavy Events including rules, technique, training, competitions and development - no experience is necessary. The Amateur training day will be held at the beginning of September and preregistering is essential. Details can be found on the Hororata Highland Games website.

The amateur training day is a great opportunity for people to hone their skills to then compete in the Gough Cat Amateur Hororata Highland Games Championship on November 5th.

The NZ Transport Agency is encouraging travellers through much of Canterbury and Queenstown Lakes to become on-the-spot reporters by crowdsourcing* travel information this winter to help keep the highways safer and everyone better informed about possible road hazards and winter conditions. The trial runs between July and the end of September.

The tool integrates locallysupplied information with the NZ Transport Agency’s existing traffic and travel web information on road conditions, area warnings, snow, ice, road closures and delays and it includes the district council’s local roads and road condition information on key routes as well. “This really is one network in action for customers,” said Transport Agency Journey Manager Lee Wright.

Wright Successfully trialled in the Queenstown Lakes District last winter, the Winter Road Report Trial and Road Conditions Tool has now been extended to

other parts of the Transport Agency’s Southern Region, including high-use local roads in the Queenstown, Timaru, Mackenzie, Ashburton, Selwyn and Waimakariri districts, as well as one key route in Christchurch City most affected by ice and snow in winter - Dyers Pass Road between Cashmere and Governor’s Bay. “Using the real-time observations of travellers on the network, the Transport Agency will have access to more timely and accurate information that can be shared to make everyone’s journey safer and more predictable,” Lee said.

The trial is part of a wider re se arc h pr oj ect b e ing undertaken by the Transport Agency and Abley Transportation Consultants to investigate the value of having an interactive winter road conditions tool that provides an more complete update on the state highways (managed by the Transport Agency) and local roads (mostly managed by local district councils) - a one

network approach for road users.

The ‘Road Reporter’ provides localised reports using their smartphone or tablet by going online at www.nzta.abley.com/ winterjourneys/ providing information and photos about hazards like crashes, slips, black ice and heavy snow, to be shared for the benefit of all travellers.

These reports are then assessed and verified against other information sources and responded to accordingly. This ensures the NZ Transport Agency is able to provide everyone with the best real-time inform atio n about ro ad conditions. *The practice of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people and especially from the online community rather than from traditional employees or suppliers. Last weekend nine year old twins Skye and Harriet Collins of Darfield travelled with their family to the West Coast where the girls took part in the annual Hokitika Recreational Gymnastics competitions. The event covered contestants from fun level gym right through to elite classes. Competitors were scored on the beam, bars, vault and floor routines.

Both Skye and Harriet are members of the West Melton Gymnastics Club, run by Pam Higgins, Higgins and train weekly.

Harriet, who has been with them for two terms, competes in Grade 2, while Skye who has only has recently started in West Melton is in Grade 1. Prior to starting in West Melton, Skye was under the tutelage of Nic Kelly in Darfield.

Ellesmere Rugby Finals Day was held last Saturday at Lincoln Rugby Grounds in cold dismal weather conditions.

In the Div 1 game Southbridge broke a 32 year drought, winning the Luisetti Seeds Ellesmere Coleman Shield 8 - 6 after a close encounter with Waihora.

West Melton Rugby Club was extremely pleased with their day the Under 11.5 team came away with a win over Rolleston Gold, the Under 18 team combined with Prebbleton outplayed Waihora and the Colts team won by a one point margin over Springston. Also in the final, but runners-up on the day, was the West Melton Div 3 team.

All local Club rugby is now finished but come along to Darfield Rugby Club on Saturday and support the local players that are in the Ellesmere and Canterbury Country Representative Rugby teams.
