Tune in from August 4th on Maori TV to see how two talented local dancers fare in their quest not only for national recognition, but also for a share in a $50,000 prize pool. Local dancers Soph Kingi and Manaia Davies have entered and competed in New Zealand’s first ever kapa haka based talent show (the only dancers from the South Island to do so)! The show blends the old and the new from jazz to capoeira, ballet, hip-hop or hula, and is aptly entitled ‘The Stage - Haka Fusion’. Local entrants Manaia and Soph have joined forces to create an independent, collaborative duo that is not attached to a specific dance studio or teacher. The duo named ‘Living Proof’ (thanks to Manaia’s dad!) are responsible for their own outfits, music and choreograph their own routines. Soph at thirteen years old, has been dancing since she was four years old. Initially starting locally with Leisa Ropiha before dance instructor Tara Marshall

taught the keen young student her first Hip Hop; Jump Jam success at school followed. Soph has, for the past two years, been attending SWARM Studios (formerly known as Moorhouse Dance Studio) and appreciates the support they’ve given her. Cont on page 3…

Sunday, August 7th will see bargain hunters again flock to Oxford for what has become not only a mammoth opportunity for garage sale-ing, but also a wonderful day out in the picturesque country township. The event is an extravaganza of new, recycled, second hand and vintage treasures, odds and ends, plus local business stalls. There are forty plus sites registered around the town for this year’s event. The Great Oxford Garage Sale Trail has been a great success for six years now and this year is bound to be no exception. Everyone, whether they admit it or not, loves to fossick around at garage sales looking for a bargain, or a special find, and this is the ideal opportunity to

The Great Garage Sale Trail is based in and around Oxford and runs from 9am until 2pm. Maps will be available from either end of the town on Main Street from 9am until 11am, as well as from the Oxford Promotions Information Tent by the Farmers’ Market Carpark from 9am, until the maps run out. A coin donation at the map collection points would be appreciated by organisers to assist with defraying the costs of running the event. The Farmers’ Market and associated Craft Market will also be open on the day. The Garage Sale Trail idea came initially from a community member six years ago; and the Oxford Promotions Action Committee took up the idea. It was seen as an event to bring visitors into the town so they could experience just what

Oxford town has to offer. “Each year, the Trail has brought hundreds into our town and this year should be no different,” commented Shirley Farrell, Farrell from the Oxford Promotions Action Committee (OPAC) who organise the event. “It’s not only great for buyers and sellers at the garage sales, it’s also good for all businesses in Oxford. It brings people from all around Canterbury to our town,” Shirley added. After the Trail, guests are able to explore Oxford further and browse through the book, gift and boutique shops, relax in a cafe, select and taste fresh produce and food from the Farmers Market and wander through the Oxford Art Gallery and Museum.

The second Soul Jam holistic and spiritual event was even more amazing than the first, according to those who were there! Topping the previous year for attendance; visitors came from as far away as Oamaru and lots of places in-between. A large number of people made the event an all-day outing to make the most of the spiritual, holistic and health expo. Held at the West Melton Community Centre over the weekend of July 16-17th, happy attendees commented on the warmth - both temperaturewise and in atmosphere. Soul Jam’s growth in popularity this year was reflected in the huge interest shown previous to the event, as well as in the number of people through the doors. “It was wonderful to see everyone with a smile on their faces when they left. For quite a number it was their first time at such an event and they were fascinated by some of the modalities offered. Others who had attended similar events commented on the ‘feel’ of it and the high standard of practitioners,” enthused Sue Jones, Jones one of the driving forces behind the event. There was a distinctly local feel to Soul Jam with most practitioners hailing from around the immediate area - Coalgate and Sheffield through to Leeston and Templeton and everywhere in-between. There was so much interest from practitioners that a waiting list had to be created. Sue advises anyone interested, to get in early next year with stall bookings, so as to avoid disappointment. Each stall was a lot busier than anticipated with various psychic

The Kirwee Model School Student Council organised a mufti day on the last day of term two (July 8th) to raise funds for Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue (CWCAR). The day was an outstanding success, and raised a grand total of just over $190. On July 15th, three lucky Kirwee students went to visit the CWCAR site to officially hand over their donation to this deserving cause. They also had the chance to spend some time with one of the pilots, as well as have a good look around the chopper. Last Saturday, July 23rd saw a field of twenty seven ploughman, along with three horse teams, compete in the Courtenay Paparua Ploughing competition. The latest Infometrics Quarterly Economic Monitor reports that Selwyn’s GDP grew by 3.6% in the year to March 2016 - well ahead of Canterbury’s average of 0.8% and the New Zealand average of 2.3%. Selwyn’s GDP had an estimated value of $1.8 billion. “Selwyn is bucking the trend that is occurring in other parts of Canterbury where a tapering off of residential rebuilding work and losses in the dairy sector are constraining growth,” said Infometrics Senior Economist, Benje Patterson. “In contrast, Selwyn is reaping the benefits of expanding industrial zones and logistical infrastructure within its district boundaries to the south of Christchurch.” Retail trade is also booming in the district and is up by 9.3% for the year to March 2016 on the previous year. Canterbury

retail trade grew by 1.2% and national trade grew by 2.8%. Retail trade figures are sourced from Marketview from electronic card spending and show that $66 million was spent in Selwyn in the January-March 2016 period. Unemployment continues to be low in the district at 2.1%, with little change from the previous year where 2.1% unemployment was recorded. The national unemployment rate for the year to March 2016 was 5.7% and for Canterbury 3.5%. Local accommodation providers have also had a busy year with the number of guest nights stayed in Selwyn increasing by 11% for the year to March 2016. Visitors stayed a total of 96,608 nights in Selwyn in this period, up from 87,282 for the previous year. Nationally, guest nights increased by 5.8% in the year to March 2016, with the report citing the growth being due to sharp increases in international visitor numbers, combined with an increase in

domestic tourism. International migration in Selwyn also jumped by 76% with 367 new international migrants moving to the district in the year to March 2016, up from 203 arrivals for the year to March 2015. Residential building consent numbers for the year were unchanged from the previous year. The value of nonresidential construction consents increased by 13% with consents having an estimated value of $109 million. The report indicates Selwyn’s dairy payout for the 2015/16 season is expected to be $275 million, $16.6 million lower than the previous season. “At this level, most dairy farmers will be running below their breakeven point. Given these losses, dairy farmers will have to keep relying heavily on bank credit lines and will continue displaying cautious spending behaviour,” concluded Benje.

The open mic night, organised by Kusal Ekanayake, a member of the Selwyn Youth Council, was a huge success and saw nine different acts showcase their talents throughout the evening. The event came about after members of the 2016 Selwyn Youth Council were encouraged to construct and organise a youth centric event based around a personal passion. “One of my major passions is music, so it made sense to organise a music based event. With the help of the Ministry of the Mind Music (in particular, my mentor Duncan Sole) and the support of the Selwyn Youth Council, we were able to bring together the equipment, venue and youth to run this first ever Selwyn Youth Open Mic night locally,” enthused organiser, Kusal. The night saw a mix of bands all consisting of local youth, under the age of 24 and ranging from slam poetry through to incredible jazz.

On Saturday, September 10th, 250 riders will attempt to conquer the Southern Alps by riding 250 gruelling kilometres Coast-to-Coast from Christchurch to Hokitika on 50cc scooters, to raise funds for the New Zealand Cancer Society. The annual event was created in 2009 by Rangiora locals Jayne and Mike Rattray after Mike’s friend and colleague, Blair Newton was diagnosed with late stage bowel cancer at just 32 years of age. The scooter safari concept started small and has escalated over the past five years into a massive event which has so far raised over $600,000 for the Cancer Society, Canterbury-West Coast Division. Registrations are currently underway with 190 participants confirmed - leaving just sixty spots remaining. “This is not a race for the faint hearted - it is designed to be the coldest, longest, hardest, most grueling and

uncomfortable test of endurance on a city scooter to raise money and awareness for cancer sufferers,” Jayne commented. Riders need not be motorcycle enthusiasts - just passionate about supporting a great cause. Participants only require a driver’s licence to ride a moped, and riders can enter as an individual or a team of up to five, which is great for corporate team building, or getting the whole family involved! “If you are interested in riding we would love to have you onboard! July 5th and a cool winter’s morning, saw 28 members of the Sheﬃeld Garden Club meet at the St Ambrose Sunday School. To begin, the group remembered the lives of those members who had been ac ve in the Garden Club and recently passed away. Joyce Jenkins, Leith Baxter and Mar n Stolp were all remembered with respect. Selwyn locals try out inflatable golf at the Have a Go Day at Lincoln in June 2015. Selwyn residents will be able to try out over twenty different sport and recreation activities for free at the forthcoming Have a Go Day on Sunday August 14th (12-3pm) at the Rolleston Community Centre. This family friendly event is hosted by Selwyn District Council, along with local sport, recreation and community groups. “If you’ve ever wanted to try out a new activity or take up a new sport then the Have a Go Day is for you,” said Selwyn District Council’s Recreation Advisor Dave Tippett. This is an online service which offers access to thousands of different training courses. Have a Go Day Passports will be available from August 1st at Selwyn Libraries, the Lincoln Event Centre, Rolleston Community Centre, Council offices in Rolleston or on the day at the event. People who complete the five simple challenges on the passport and have this stamped will enter a prize draw for a $250 or $100 Rebel Sport voucher. Crea ve Colouring is a craze that has really caught people’s imagina on and as we at Garden Club like to keep up with things, thought we would have a go. Cynthia Bishell and Kate Campbell, two of our members, arranged the a?ernoon for us. Stencils, pens and pencils were supplied and we were all encouraged to par cipate. The idea of colour crea on is one which appeals to gardeners and colour can make two similar gardens look en rely different from each other. To help us with our efforts, Cynthia who is a library assistant, arranged for us to borrow a selec on of books from the shelves. The books were varied and allowed us to use our imagina ons to full poten al. As we did not have much else on the agenda for the mee ng, we spent an hour with pencils in hand, crea ng some wonderful results. Members were able to enjoy the a?ernoon whilst cha ng and catching up with friends. A very social a?ernoon, much enjoyed. Thanks to the Darfield Library for the loan of the books and to Cynthia and Kate for all their efforts. Our new programme was available and members went home to see what we had arranged for the next twelve months. Thanks must go to Carol Williams, our Secretary, for all her hard work in preparing the programme for prin ng. Next month is our last Winter mee ng, Spring is just around the corner, so we will be busy again outdoors. Keep warm, happy days.
