Coach Emily Lawn (left) with Grace Lemon after the pair won their respective classes in Aerobics at the weekend.
Grace Lemon of Kirwee is not only talented, but is also just seventeen years old. She began aerobics in 2014 after admitting that although she missed dance, she wanted a slightly different challenge. Looking for something that pushed her a bit more, she saw a post on Facebook from an old school friend who was active in Christchurch-based aerobics. Grace, who is passionate about her sport, and already plays netball, tennis and volleyball, decided that aerobics was definitely the thing for her, and got lucky enough to get taken on by top coach, Emily Lawn. Lawn “Last weekend I competed at the regional NZCAF aerobics event, held at Cashmere High School in Christchurch,” Grace said. “I was placed first in the Senior Open Novice grade, which qualifies me to compete in the NZCAF Nationals to be held in Dunedin, during September.

This is the third time I have won at the Regionals and represented Canterbury at Nationals, and now I am working hard to improve on my previous NZCAF results, which in 2014 included a third place nationally. During May, Grace also competed in a FISAF Nationals Aerobics competit ion in Wellington with success and a gold medal. Her two minute long routine involves aspects of dance, gymnastics, and pure strength. “You are judged on the following areas: • Technical - the execution of your skills, jumps, press ups, holds etc. • Artistic - your performance skills and quality. • Aerobic abilities - which is the height of your jumps, travelling hip levels and how easy you make the routine look. “I want to thank my amazing coach Emily, who is based in Lincoln, and who also gained a first placing at last weekend’s Regional event.” Emily has recently qualified to compete in Vienna, Austria at the FISAF Aerobic World Championships. “Emily is my inspiration, role model and motivator, and I would not be the athlete I am without all her help and support. Aerobics is a high intensity sport, which takes lots of training and dedication, it has a positive and passionate following, and there were some incredibly talented athletes performing at the competition in the weekend,” Grace concluded.
If it’s newsworthy and you know about it - we’d like to know too!
