On July 2nd, in Auckland’s St Patrick’s Cathedral, Darfield’s Michelle Kittelty took part in an investiture service which saw her admitted to the Order of St John and meet with the New Zealand Governor General, Sir Jerry Mateparae who officiated as the Queen’s representative at the ceremony. Michelle has given twenty seven years of voluntary service to St John and is well known for her continued contribution to Malvern’s St John. She is an active ambulance officer, as well as Assistant Divisional Youth Manager for St John Cadets. St John has its own honours system and through it, they recognise and reward the hard work and service of their members, by admitting or promoting them to the Order of St John. St John Honours are sanctioned by Her Majesty The Queen, Sovereign Head of the Most Venerable Order of St John and are an independent part of the New Zealand Royal
Honours System. Individuals have their honour officially conferred at the Investiture ceremony, presided over by His Excellency The Governor General (who is the Prior of St John in New Zealand - the head of St John in New Zealand). Individuals are not officially members of the Order of St John until conferred at an Investiture. These are the Order's most important ceremonies as they bring in new Members so that the Order is sustained long-term. Two Investiture services are held a year, one in each Island. This was the biggest investiture ever, to be held, with 58 taking part. It was also the last official engagement for New Zealand’s Governor General Sir Jerry Mateparae before he retires from the appointment. To be admitted to the Order of St John, an individual is nominated by his or her peers for: • dedicated service including the quality of contribution

successful leadership the potential for future leadership or administration. Above all, those admitted to the Order have shown conspicuous work for St John in helping carry out its mission in New Zealand: to prevent and relieve sickness and injury, and to act to enhance the health and wellbeing of people of all races and creeds. There are several grades within the Order of St John. Individuals are usually admitted as Members of the Order and • •
may be promoted to a higher Grade dependent on their ongoing contribution. St John’s has unbroken links back to the medieval Order of St John, and was established as a Royal Order of Chivalry in 1888. An order of chivalry is best described as a group of people sworn by a set of rules to provide Christian care for the sick and the poor. More information on St John’s history, can be found at www.stjohn.org.nz/About-StJohn/History.
