Malvern News is distributed to 5700 homes and businesses in the Malvern area.

Crowds (some from as far afield as Christchurch) attended the cinematic showings of yesteryear at the Sheffield Community Hall for last Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon matinee screenings.

So many so, that organisers had to quickly organise and arrange extra seating for the unexpected numbers coming through the doors. Those attending weren’t disappointed and without exception everyone enjoyed the amazing Step Back in Time afforded them by Fred Bull’s historical movies. These had been preserved throughout the years by Fred (Jnr) having been filmed by his father Fred Bull Senior.

Amazingly many of those appearing on screen were actually in the audience watching - not surprisingly they were many years older!

Donald Wright acted as MC and as Fred changed film reels he jogged the memories of those present with tales and anecdotes of the past,

encouraging the audience to join in with long forgotten names and stories. The ‘theatre ushers’ were brilliant and the country supper and hot cuppas were extremely well received.

The interval was followed by more oooohs and aaaahs as the audience thoroughly

enjoyed the spectacle of events past, while younger attendees exclaimed at just how hard folk worked back then - and celebrated at the same level!

Those who put the event together are the next generation of community spirited volunteers and they felt

they were in very good company. Organisers are extremely appreciative of all the help and assistance they received from various individuals and businesses, enabling them to present such a successful event.

The Malvern Schools’ Speech Competition was held on Tuesday, June 28th.

The Westpac Helicopter was the topic of the winning speech at the Competition and this was presented by Hororata student Charlie Blackburn.

Blackburn The speech competition was hosted at Darfield Primary School and supported by Nelson Early of Hornby Toastmasters, along with Matthew and Phillip Sampson of Darfield Tecorians, who made up the judging panel.

making a difference in the lives of others. Specifically, children who have been abused, abandoned or are in need of aid.

The vision for the initiative started around two years ago when Katie’s flight to the Pacific nation was rescheduled. She found herself seated next to an ex-pat Kiwi woman on the plane, a plane that she was not scheduled to be on, and a seat she had not planned to be sitting in! Katie and the woman got chatting about their mutual love of Vanuatu - which led to Katie being informed about the darker side of the Island. Young girls who had been raped, sometimes via incest, and through no fault of their own found themselves pregnant.

These girls felt so ostracised by their community that they would go deep into the jungle, deliver the baby alone and then leave it there to die.

“ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency) is working on education, but deeply engrained attitudes are hard to shift,” Katie added.

Katie was deeply affected by this heart-wrenching information and after researching it further, felt determined to do something

to help these children. Katie’s plane companion told her of a woman in Vanuatu with a wonderful vision for a refuge centre. Just months before her life-changing plane trip, Katie had learned that she was to receive an inheritance from her uncle. She felt compelled to use this and start an orphanage in Vanuatu and now her vision is becoming a reality.

“Last year in conjunction with others, some land was purchased close to Port Villa, on the main island of Efate, Vanuatu,” Katie said. “There is currently a small team working on getting building construction started, but we need materials desperately.

Taege Engineering of Sheffield and its owner Keith Taege have purchased a 40ft insulated container and are going to send it out to Vila in late July.

Right now building materials are urgently needed for the project.

“Maybe you have something lying around you no longer need, or perhaps you would be willing to donate some funds to purchase materials,” Katie said.

Above Hugh Paterson, Debs Abraham, Shawn Abraham, Colin Battersby, Graham Stuthridge and Hazel Wheeler, who along with other members of the Sheffield Waddington community were hard at work - planting daffodils alongside State Highway 73 last week.

Some 25,000 daffodils have been planted - all by hand using spades and grubbers, in and around the township and the Domain. The planting was originally begun by resident Martin Stolp who sadly died recently.

Malvern Plunket currently no longer officially exists.

The Malvern Plunket rooms in Darfield are now owned by Canterbury Area Society in title only. Sheffield/Springfield, West Melton, Hororata and Kirwee were/are all run from local community halls.

Glentunnel’s building was sold-off by Malvern before the dis-establishment of the branch.

This meant the revenue from the sale would remain in Malvern to provide facilities and care for all Malvern mothers and babies.

It was agreed by all parties on October 24th, 2013 that Darfield were to keep control of their rooms and pay financially towards the maintenance and any other costs they may occur.

Because of the costs associated with this it was also agreed that all Malvern’s funds, including those from the sale of Glentunnel, were to go to Darfield. This to help with the financial burden of maintaining the rooms and to be tagged for building purposes only. Each sub branch still had their own funds to help with their own area.

Out of the seven groups that existed under Malvern there are now only three. West Melton is still waiting for a new room to be

Darfield now have a fantastic proactive group of volunteers who have run numerous successful events throughout the year. They have a vision to improve the current Plunket Rooms on Halkett Street in Darfield and it’s hoped this venture progresses well.

Recently the Malvern Lions and Partners celebrated the end of their 45th year, with the holding of their annual Changeover Night. Following a delightful meal prepared by Claire Bennett and her team at the Coalgate Tavern, outgoing President Brian Davidson reported on the success of the wide range of projects undertak en by members during the year. This was followed by the induction of a new Board for the 2016/2017 year, which will be led by new President, John Morten.

Morten The opportunity was also taken, to farewell a foundation member of the Club, Murray Faulkner and his wife Lesley, Lesley who have recently shifted to Ashburton.

This highly regarded couple will be remembered for their outstanding service to the Club, and also to the district.

“We were pleased to hear that Murray and Lesley have already joined the Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club,” Brian commented, “and we wish them every happiness and success in their new home town.”

During the meeting Trevor Taege was awarded the Ramsay

Gibson Trophy for his fine service to the Club. This includes performing the role of Lion Tamer for many years, and also for the generosity both Trevor and Heather have shown toward Camp Quality. Each January, Camp Quality hold a camp at Living Springs for children suffering from cancer related illnesses. Trevor and Heather regularly host the children, at their property in Kowai Bush for a day of

activities, during these annual camps. The activities include among other things, jet boat and four wheel drive rides, and sometimes helicopter rides also.

Many local people will remember Ramsay Gibson who was the initial President of the Malvern Lions Club, when it was formed in 1971. The trophy celebrates the key role which Ramsay had in the Club’s formation, along with Colin Stott.

WANTED Lions Clubs originated in Chicago in 1917, through the vision of a local resident, Melvin Jones.

Jones He proposed that clubs be formed to serve their communities, and also to foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the World. Today Lions Clubs are active in two hundred and ten countries, with almost 1.5 million members.

The Malvern Club presently has 53 members, and is one of the larger clubs in the South Island.

The Malvern Lions are grateful for the support the community has given to their various activities during the past year.

Two key fundraising activities upon which they depend on the community’s support are; the selling of food at various community events, and also the sale of pea straw.

“We thank our community for their tremendous support for these activities, which provide us with considerable income to return to the community through grants, donations and the provision of other items, including equipment. We also

thank the farming community for enabling us to obtain a large quantity of pea straw to sell, which adds considerably to our income too,” Brian added.

During the past year, the Club’s fund raising initiatives enabled them to disburse over $40,000 to many worthwhile projects.

The largest grant for the year, was given to the Malvern Community Patrol, with whom the Club partnered to hold a very successful Golf Tournament on May 12th. This event raised $18,700 for their organisation.

The members of this valuable community initiative, are to be c o ng r a t u l a t ed o n t h e i r conscientious efforts to gather support and prizes for the event and for their excellent help on the day. We also thank the many people and businesses, both local and from Christchurch and the region, who support these tournaments each year.

“We wish the Community Patrol every success in their future efforts to help keep local residents and their property safe, through their regular

patrols about Malvern,” Brian commented.

To recognise the forthcoming centennial of the Lions organisation (in 2017/2018), International Officers have recommended that clubs continue to make the support for four long term Lions’ initiatives a priority, to mark this important milestone. The four areas are: Youth, Sight/ Vision, the Environment, and Assisting the Needy. The Malvern Club has always given consideration to these areas of interest. As an example, young people in this district benefitted by almost $10,000 during the past year.

“The Club is proud also however, of the broad range of projects and initiatives we support each year in addition to these areas. The Club shall continue to support many other worthwhile projects as well.

“We thank our generous community again for its support, and look forward to another successful year of service over the next twelve months,” Brian concluded.

Hororata Primary School is proud to be represented at the NZ Young Farmers Agrikids Finals by three Year 6 pupils; Grace Flett, Will Cookson and Tom Chaffey. The pupils secured their place in the final by achieving third place at the Tasman regional final held at the Oxford A & P Show in April.

The trio are working hard on learning skills in all aspects of dairy, beef, sheep and cropping farming. They also have to answer a number of general knowledge questions and be up -to-date with first aid, which has seen them reading furiously in preparation for the big test.

There are at least 21 finalists from throughout New Zealand competing for top placings and Hororata’s students are keen to stand their ground.

The competition will be held at the same time as the FMG Young Farmer of the Year grand final, from July 7-9th in Timaru.

Ahead of the competition, the News asked the contestants some questions about the event • Which event are you most

Tom: A lot of reading and practical help from friends - a nice lady, Sarah, from the Dunsandel Young Farmers Club came and taught us about Stock Judging and Wool.

Will: I have been learning about seeds and pastures, and we are talking to a sheep judge about judging sheep. We also have to learn some first aid and general knowledge. There is a lot we need to learn, but we don’t know what we are going to be asked to do until the day arrives.

Grace: I've been practising general knowledge questions and practising at home on the farm.

Tom: I am looking forward to the Practical Day modules, mostly the Bikes module as I like riding my motorbike around the farm. I am also looking forward to the bus trip the next day after the competition when we get to do some fun activities in Timaru.

I also have been getting waratahs out of old fences. My brothers and I have been selling these on Trade me for $2 each.

Grace: Yes quite a bit - shifting crop fences getting cows in, doing stock check lists, grubbing weeds. I love getting out on the farm with dad. I believe by working hard and giving it your all you give yourself the best chance.

The Lincoln Envirotown Trust has just announced that the Responsible Business Awards will be run in the Malvern and West Melton areas for the first time in 2016.

Wendy Wild, Wild an ex-business owner in Darfield has been appointed to undertake this process. The Responsible Business Awards were first trialled in Lincoln in 2007 and run the next year. Since then many other Districts have been added and the inclusion of Malvern will mean that the programme is running Selwyn wide. The reason for introducing the scheme was to encourage and support local businesses to become more environmentally sustainable and maybe even save money.

In the near future Wendy will be contacting businesses throughout the Malvern District to invite them to participate.

The process is relatively simple – Businesses complete a Survey Form and once this is ready the Assessor arranges a suitable time for a short site visit to discuss the practices

reported on.

Last year 156 Selwyn businesses took part. A recent study by Lincoln University into the Awards came up with very positive findings. It specifically referred to the feedback from companies that were new to the scheme, detailing the advantages that such firms saw in their participation.

These included such things as seeing how well they are doing in terms of good environmental practices, connecting with people and resources that can improve on these and free advertising through the scheme in local print and online media.

At the end of the assessment process, businesses will find themselves with a Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, or Diamond Award. The Diamond Award is a recent addition and includes a component of community leadership. In October an Award ceremony will be held where, apart from the presentation of certificates, there will be a

The overall winner will be announced and awarded a Trophy. The awards are usually presented by the Mayor of Selwyn.

The Darfield Pool committee has agreed to its disestablishment, with the management of the pool now sitting with Selwyn District Council.

The decision comes after twelve months of discussion between the committee and Council over the transition to full Council oversight.

Aquatic Facilities Manager Kathy Moore commented that the committee had done outstanding work on behalf of the Darfield community over many years, but the time was right to make the change.

“Since the opening of the Selwyn Aquatic Centre the range of professional skills and experience the Council has available has expanded and this has resulted in the Council taking on more of the day to day operation of the Pool, with the support of the Pool Committee,” she added.

“The Committee acknowledged it has become increasingly chal le ngi ng to op erat e effectively. It has been difficult to find members, and it currently has no chairperson and insufficient numbers for a quorum.”

“The connection with the local community has been an important part of the Pool’s success, and we want to ensure that relationship is retained,” Kathy stressed.

“Local residents and users will still be able to have their say on Pool issues by talking directly

with the Pool Manager, and Council staff will keep the Malvern Community Board updated on issues relating to the Pool.”

The Pool is a popular summer attraction for the local com m un i ty, c on s i st e nt ly attracting between 6,000 and 9,000 visits each season, depending on weather conditions.

Our first mee ng of the Winter season saw a huge number of entries on the show tables with some stunning floral decora ve work. This is not the easiest me of year to show blooms but members excelled themselves with their exhibits. There were a few maIers of a business nature to discuss, but not too many, which leO us with plenty of me to enjoy our speaker for the day. Alanah Conner from the newly established florist shop ‘A Twisted Bunch’ was extremely well received, and with jus fica on. Alanah was a delight to watch as she worked on the floral wreath she created. With an Oasis base to start with, she worked into it foliage, stunning red roses, cones, orchids and other bits and pieces. The joy of watching Alanah work was added to by her posi ve and enthusias c personality, which undoubtedly proved her passion for the trade, one which she clearly shines at.

She gave us some very handy ps for floral work and answered all our ques ons in an easy manner. Forty five minutes later and a stunning crea on sat on the table, greatly admired by all. At the conclusion of her talk Alanah very kindly donated the wreath to the Club and this was raffled off, proceeds going to Club funds. Chris ne Anderson was the lucky lady to win and many members were leO just to wish!

However, all is not lost as we will be having a floral work shop later in the year, to see what we can create. So thank you Alanah for a most enjoyable aOernoon. A nice cup of tea and biscuits rounded off a very happy session. Not a lot to do in the garden at the moment, so catch up on your indoor jobs, be ready for all the joys of Spring gardening soon to come.
