July 1st dawned sunny, still and beautiful. The day saw around seventy people gather at the Sheffield Cenotaph to plant a commemorative Gallipoli Oak, reflect during a short service officiated at by Rev Susan Baldwin and read the inscription on the specially prepared cross, installed at the site. The whole student population of Sheffield Primary School attended the moving service, and the School hosted a morning tea at its conclusion. It’s hoped the cross and the Oak will serve to remind future generations of the sacrifices made by those that fought in the Battle of the Somme. The cross was deliberately cast in concrete in an attempt to avoid theft and vandalism - as has been experienced in other parts of New Zealand for items of a similar nature.

TIMBER PACK SPECIALS Congratulations are in order for local cricket superstar, Henry Shipley. Henry is one of the latest additions to be signed up to the Gary Stead coached, Canterbury Cricket team. The twenty year old, from Greendale was chosen for his pace bowling calibre and rightarm speed. Stead believes Henry’s youthful fast bowling together with his batting technique will make him a genuine all rounder this summer. Henry, who plays for the Greendale Club, has had ties to cricket for as long as he can remember as his father, James Shipley also played cricket locally. “My dad played cricket really well, so growing up I spent a lot of time watching him play and coach at various levels. I think this just fuelled my desire to take up the game, which ultimately, has led to where I am today,” explained Henry. The young man’s passion for the sport began at an early age with the roots of his interest, firmly planted in Greendale. Henry would go and watch his mother play tennis and his father play cricket on a Saturday at the Greendale Domain - still some of his fondest memories. This led to ‘Have A Go Cricket’ at Darfield High School and having a hit in the back yard with “the old man”, through to playing in the St Andrews College team and selection to Canterbury Country in Year 9. Henry has not looked back since, playing for Canterbury Country every year until U19 level, then Canterbury A which was the stepping stone to his current, contracted position.

Having guys with experience in the group is going to definitely help me with developing and coping with any pressure. I've been a part of the Canterbury setup for a couple of seasons now so hopefully the step-up won't be anything too unexpected,” Henry added. To maintain the required level of fitness and skill to keep his place in the team, Henry trains six days a week. This includes strength and conditioning three days a week and running on the other three days. In any spare time, Henry also trains in the nets. Henry is currently on a cricket scholarship at Lincoln University, where he is in his second year of a Bachelor of Property Management and Valuation. Malvern’s other first class cricketing success Rob Frew, who also knows the skill and hard work necessary for
selection and play in the Canterbury team commented: “With a couple of defections in Canterbury’s fast bowling ranks, Henry has every chance of featuring in a large part of what nowadays is a very busy rep season. “Henry has impressive physical attributes for a fast bowler, and is quick enough to trouble most batsmen, at the same time I’m sure he would class himself as an all-rounder. It’s going to be exciting to watch him develop his all round skills this season in both disciplines at a high level. “I’m not sure of the last Malvern player to play cricket for Canterbury, whilst playing for a local Club and it’s something Greendale and Malvern should be very proud of.” While obviously very pleased with what their son has achieved, Henry’s Dad James and Mother Andrea were reluctant to add too many comments, suffice to say they were not surprisingly, extremely proud.

A trio of organising talent - Steph Kimber, Karan Hofmeester and Liz Snook - representing both Netball and Rugby Clubs. This year’s Darfield Rugby and Netball Clubs fundraising Ball, held last Saturday, was definitely a success and more than on a par with those previous Balls, so well remembered. It took on a new iden ty from those held previously, one, which if the comments received are anything to go by, was extremely well received. “It was a great night,” commented a Darfield local who a-ended. “The band didn’t disappoint and had everyone on the dance floor for most of the night. It was also a fantas c opportunity to have a catch-up and a chat to friends and neighbours too,” they added. Around two hundred people filled the Darfield Recrea on Centre and the transforma on brought about by ceiling drapings and copious quan es of fairy lights transformed the facility. Organisers had been hard at work not only before the event, but also on the night to ensure it ran smoothly and then with the mammoth clean-up the next day. President of the Darfield Rugby Club, James Scollay commented that, "it was great to have the support of all the community and we saw people from all over Malvern, as well as Christchurch turn up, which was fantas c. The night ran well and everyone had a wonderful me," he added. "I would like to thank our Social Commi-ee for pu ng together such a spectacular night, along with the Darfield Netball Club for their wonderful food and all the assistance they gave.” “We are really pleased with how the night went,” said a member of the organising commi-ee. “The band were amazing and kept the crowd going from their arrival right ll the end, We’re really looking forward to having them back to play again at the next ball - which will be next year,” they said! Lorraine Strowger who headed up the Darfield Netball Club’s organising group added: “We’d like to thank all those who came and enjoyed the Ball while suppor ng the Darfield Rugby and Netball Clubs. Thanks also go to all those that helped with organising the event and se ng up the hall, as well as all the work on the night just doing whatever had to be done. Not forge ng of course taking it all down again on Sunday! It was a great night and thank you.” For all the organisers, it’s now relief the clean-up is over; while for everyone it’s a chance to relive the night through the photos on Facebook and an opportunity to look forward to the next Ball in 2017.

Cole Atutolu was recognised at Glentunnel School’s assembly on Friday, July 1st for his leadership qualities by receiving a Sir Peter Blake Young Leader Award. The award (a prize pack, certificate, and Sir Peter Blake Medal) was presented by A shl e igh Co ll ie r, r a representative from Westpac (a sponsor of the Sir Peter Blake Trust initiated award). Cole was nominated for the award by his peers and school staff. Cole ably met the brief for

the award: a person who displays humility, humour, inclusiveness, positivity, and a team approach… qualities also shown by Sir Peter Blake. The theme for Leadership Week - #believeyoucan brought with it a message about self-belief and the need to back yourself and the team in order to achieve great things. When people would question his lofty aspirations, Sir Peter would simply say to those around him “never take no for an answer and never give up if you really
believe in what you are doing”. One of the greatest sailors the world has ever known, Sir Peter gave this nation much to celebrate. He understood that Leadership was not just about advancing your own cause but how skills and experience were used to bring out the best in others. When he failed - which he did many times - he picked himself and his team up quickly and helped them to learn from each and every mistake. But while Sir Peter liked to win, he would tell his team that it wasn’t enough to win because what people would remember was, ‘how you won’.

Hororata Primary School students had already enjoyed a visit from local business Ballooning Canterbury back in May as part of their Semester One Collaborative Science topic ‘Up, Up and Away’ (Flight in the Physical World). On 23rd June Darfield Preschool and Nursery were overtaken by pirates and princesses when the Centre’s four year olds held their sleepover at Preschool. There was a treasure hunt in the dark, swords and crowns were decorated, games played, marshmallows toasted in the sandpit and of course a movie with lots of yummy food to eat. All the children were asleep by 9.30pm, closely followed by the teachers! The next day was pyjama day at Preschool, so there wasn’t even the need to get dressed! The children have been asking; “what day is the sleepover this week?” and “when’s the next one?” While another child is organising his first sleepover at Granma’s. Darfield Preschool and Nursery parents welcomed the opportunity for their children to experience their first sleepover away from home, in a safe environment, with people they knew. “Lachlan Lachlan loved his night at the sleepover,” said his Mum, Fiona Stechmann. Thanks to all the staff for making this a fun and confidence growing experience and he is already looking
forward to spending more nights away from us!” After hearing all about the fun that was had, the Darfield Preschool and Nursery three year olds are looking forward to their turn next year. One of them has even asked for a sleeping bag for her birthday in preparation! The positive attitude on the sidelines was great to see as well,” enthused Olivia Willocks, Willocks Malvern Netball’s Junior Co-ordinator. “The Year 3’s and 4’s especially improved so much every week it will be very exciting to see where the future of Malvern Netball is going,” she added! On Saturday, June 18th, on an unseasonably warm, starry evening, over forty residents attended a mid-winter Yuletide feast in the Glenroy Community Hall. The event was organised by the Hall Committee with lots of help from the community. On the previous weekend a working bee had cleared the parking area, and cleaned the Hall from top to bottom! June 21st was the mid-winter solstice: the Solstice and its associated Yule festival celebrate the turning of the light. In the Northern Hemisphere, this is on December 21st and very near to the Christmas period. Here in New Zealand the celebration of the lightening days can still be done - in mid-winter, mid-year and happily now the Earth starts to return to the light! As Yule is the traditional celebration for the turning of the light, a Yule Log blazed in the grounds of the Hall, while the inside had been ‘decked with boughs of holly’ and chains of fairy lights. After dinner, tea and coffee followed, with the option of delicious chocolate log. Mulled juice and wine, plus fruit juice were the perfect accompaniments.
There was a real community atmosphere as different families converged on the food and settled at tables in the darkened Hall, after the lights were turned off and the candles on the table glowed a subdued light.

The Riley is a colour which stands out in its pale lemon livery and is easy to spot. To the Editors: Just to say thanks Hugh for the article reminding us of the Battle of Somme. To put it in context, this was a victory over the Germans - very costly of course - and it was necessary as the French were fighting on the Verdun salient, and if the Somme had not been fought the Germans would have transferred troops to Verdun, defeated the French, and marched on Paris. End of the Great War. I think these facts need to be said as so many people think the sacrifice was needless. What was needless was the Serbs’ refusal to allow the Austrians access to defeat the Black Hand Gang and other subversives!!

Innovation and a clear vision on how to give children a head start at school was central to the Ministry of Education awarding Teacher Innovation Funding to Darfield Primary School. Darfield Primary School was one of only seven schools in the Canterbury Region to be awarded the funding that will target $78,000 towards preparing students for school. Principal Aaron Richards said, "that the school was determined to provide Darfield Students with the best education possible and

working closely with early childhood centres was essential for this to happen." The project partners include Darfield Preschool and Nursery, Annabel's Kindergarten and Darfield Play Centre. The University of Canterbury will also support the innovation project by providing the research assistance. Darfield teachers Kiri Conrad and Mark Robb are the lead teachers on the project. Aaron commented that the funding would not have been secured if
it was not for the hard work and dedication of the two teachers. Now the funding has been approved, the focus will shift to working with the project partners to develop strategies that enhance students transition between early childhood and primary school. It is envisaged that after the two years the knowledge gained through the project will be expanded to include other schools within the Malvern Community of Learning.

Selwyn residents are being asked to help identify the district’s current and future aquatic facility needs, by completing an Aquatic Facilities Questionnaire. Selwyn has been growing and changing rapidly over the past decade, putting existing community facilities, including swim m ing po ol s, und er pressure. The Council’s Aquatic Facilities Plan, which was developed in 2008, has effectively directed Selwyn’s aquatic facility provision over the last eight years. The plan has driven key projects such as the development of the Selwyn Aquatic Centre, upgrading changing and pool facilities at
Southbridge and Sheffield Pools, heating at Darfield and Leeston Learners Pool, general pool facilities at Prebbleton Pool and annual grants to support community pools, including school pools. The plan has been in place over a period of significant change, including impacts from the Canterbury earthquakes, and now needs to be reviewed to ensure it remains relevant. “The public questionnaire asks people what aquatic facilities they currently use, for what purpose, and what improvements, if any, may be required,” said Mark Rykers, the Council’s Manager Open Space and Property. “People’s input will be used to
help update our Aquatic Facilities Plan, which is expected to be released for consultation in the coming spring time.” The Council is also surveying aquatic facility users, such as swimming clubs and schools, as well as community aquatic facility providers. It is also meeting with Community Committees responsible for aquatic facilities, and carrying out on-site inspections of aquatic facilities in the district. The survey is open until July 15th and can be completed online at www.selwyn.govt.nz/ haveyoursay. Everyone who completes the survey will go in the draw to win a $100 petrol voucher.

Peden “We’re asking everyone to check their packs to make sure that we have their details correct, so that they don’t miss out on voting in the local elections. “All you’ll need to do is check that your details are correct. If they are right, you don’t need to do anything more. If anything needs updating, make the
changes and send them back to us immediately.” The local elections are held by postal vote, so it is critical that people are enrolled at the right address. Only those correctly enrolled by Friday, August 12th 2016 will get their voting papers for the 2016 local elections sent to them in the mail. “If you don’t get a pack by July 4th you’re not enrolled, so you need to get onto it,” said Robert. “If you get a pack that’s not addressed to anyone at your house, send it back.” Enrolling or updating your details is easy - go online at elections.org.nz, freetext your name and address to 3676, call

A single guy decided life would be more fun if he had a pet. So he went to the pet store and told the owner that he wanted to buy an unusual pet. A_er some discussion, he finally bought a talking cen pede, which came in a li-le white box to use for his house. He took the box back home, found a good spot for the box, and decided he would start off by taking his new pet to the pub for a drink with him. So he asked the cen pede in the box, "Would you like to go down the pub with me today? We will have a good me." But there was no answer from his new pet. This bothered him a bit, but he waited a few minutes and then asked again, "How about going down the pub?" But again, there was no answer from his new friend and pet. The guy decided to invite the cen pede one last me. This me he put his face up against the cen pede's box and shouted, "Hey, you in there! Would you like to go to the pub with me?
