July 1st dawned sunny, still and beautiful. The day saw around seventy people gather at the Sheffield Cenotaph to plant a commemorative Gallipoli Oak, reflect during a short service officiated at by Rev Susan Baldwin and read the inscription on the specially prepared cross, installed at the site. The whole student population of Sheffield Primary School attended the moving service, and the School hosted a morning tea at its conclusion. It’s hoped the cross and the Oak will serve to remind future generations of the sacrifices made by those that fought in the Battle of the Somme. The cross was deliberately cast in concrete in an attempt to avoid theft and vandalism - as has been experienced in other parts of New Zealand for items of a similar nature.

While pupils from Sheffield Primary School look on, another of the School’s students Maggie Bull assists Hugh Paterson and George Ridgen with the planting of a commemorative Gallipoli Oak tree.
