unday, June 19th saw a flock of costumed teens and teachers attend the annual Mud Run and amongst them were many from Malvern. The event, organised by the University of Canterbury, invites all secondary schools across the greater Christchurch and Canterbury region to take part. Teams of four had an unique opportunity to dress up and take on a five kilometre obstacle course known for containing just a bit of mud, a few challenges and heaps of entertainment along the way! The event is popular among teens as participants do not need sporting or athletic experience; it's all about 'having a go’, ‘having fun with friends’ and getting extremely muddy in the process!

It is also a great chance to show that by making time, the whole community benefits, people can gain new experience(s), and increase their personal satisfaction. Local MP Amy Adams welcomed Volunteer Week 2016 by acknowledging the hard work of the thousands of volunteers in Selwyn. “It’s outstanding that so many locals give their time, skills and resources to help improve the health of our community,” Amy commented. “As Selwyn’s local MP I am immensely grateful for the contribution that our volunteers make by freely donating their time and energy to support a range of non-profit institutions including youth organisations, social services, sports clubs and charities”. An organisation active in the Malvern area, and reliant on

Selwyn residents have been learning the basics of first aid in case their communities need to draw on their help in an emergency. Fifteen civil defence volunteers who are part of local community response teams spent two Saturdays in May learning basic first aid skills from Triex Workplace Health and Safety. Another training session running on two Saturdays in August is also planned for other Community Response Team members. The first aid training course was funded by Selwyn District Council. It aimed to assist volunteers in their community response role if anyone in their community needs first aid in an emergency and health services are overwhelmed, unavailable or too far away. Matt Joynes from the Whitecliffs Community Response Team also took part in the course. “As a father of two small children in a rural and sometimes quite isolated area, I was very aware that I have little in the way of first aid knowledge if something went wrong. Other than dialling 111, I wasn't sure what I'd do, and that scared me. In a small community, with a range of age groups and needs, the skills to help in emergency situations are vital. The course has allowed me

to build a good understanding of what to do in various scenarios, which should enable me to assist in my community should the need arise. It has also given me a level of confidence that I did not have previously.” Matt said that learning CPR and how to deal with choking were some key skills he picked up from the training and he would recommend the training to others. “You never know what life will bring, the more people that have these sort of skills under their belts the more lives that may be saved.” Anyone interested in becoming a civil defence volunteer and joining a Community Response Team can contact Sue Jenkins at: sue.jenkins@selwyn.govt.nz to find out more.

To the Editors: The laws regarding boundary fencing are quite clear; ‘the fence must be fit for purpose’. So why then, are there so many road side fences that ‘leak’ stock? When the escaped stock are sheep, the resulting collision with a car is a panel beating job. The result is very different when the wandering animals are cattle or horses. In the case of car versus horse, this often results in the death of the car occupants. Yet, we have at the Homebush/Deans Road corner, horses and sheep with some wire that was once a fence and is only knee height. It is not a case of if stock get out, it is a case of when. Also, it’s pretty hard to drove stock with no effective road side fence. C’mon you landowners - build and maintain ‘stock proof’ boundary fences - especially road boundaries.

Mike Davies, Glenroy The Darfield Primary School’s PTA extremely successful fundraising Quiz held last Friday evening in the school’s assembly hall attracted a huge crowd, well in excess of previous events. While the ‘nuts and bolts’ of the quiz were handled by a professional events business, the hosting, prizes and o n-the-night organisation was undertaken by volunteers. The assistance of Malvern St John cadets as runners and Pete Thomas manning the bar was much appreciated by organisers. Twenty two teams took part and while the final tally hasn’t yet been completed, the event was a huge success with 100% of proceeds from the evening going toward enhancing the current learning environment and opportunities for Darfield Primary students. Malvern Community Patrol Le er of Thanks to the Malvern Community The Malvern Lions recently provided the opportunity for the Malvern Community Patrol to provide the catering and raffle prizes for the Greendale Golf Tournament which was held on the 12 May 2016. Much of the catering produce and all of the raffle prizes were donated free of charge by the Malvern Community and local businesses. At the conclusion of a very enjoyable and successful tournament, Malvern Lions very generously presented a significant boost to the Malvern Community Patrol’s funding. The Malvern Community Patrol would like to extend its deepest gra tude to all businesses, community organisa ons, and individuals who supported our endeavours in this event, without whose support this event and our fund raising efforts would not have succeeded. We would also like to extend a very special thanks to the Malvern Lions, members of the Greendale Golf Club, Councillor John Morten, Selwyn District Council and Jenny Gallagher QSM, Chair of the Malvern Community Board. The Darfield Community Patrol was formed out of a desire to address issues of an -social and criminal behaviour to ensure a safer community, and like many other community organisa ons commenced its ac vi es on a shoe string budget. The forma on of the Patrol and its opera on to date would not have been possible, if not for the strong and tangible support and generosity of local businesses and the community. This support is ongoing and comes in many forms, from financial sponsorship to prac cal support. Over the past three years the Patrol has grown in strength and experience, and has formed strong bonds with the Darfield Police, local businesses, volunteer organisa ons, and resident popula on. Sue Jones To commemorate the commencement of the Battle of the Somme the Sheffield/ Waddington Township commit te e wi ll h old a ceremonial tree planting on July 1st at the Sheffield Cenotaph. The Battle of the Somme took place from July 1st, 1916, until November 18th, 1916 and was fought on the Western Front in the northern sector of the trench system that stretched from the English Channel to the border with Switzerland. The name comes from the river which flows through a countryside of low rolling hills dotted with villages and woods. The land formation is chalk in origin which is dry and hard in summer and rain soaked in winter. The opposing armies were the Germans and their allies to the east and the British (plus colonial troops) and the French, to the west. The separation between these armies was only a few kilometres. The intention of the battle was to attack and ove rw h el m th e G e r ma n fortifications and drive their army from the field. Both sides had been in place since 1915, so they had had time to build fortifications and vast complex trench systems. On the German side these fortifications were defensive. They dug as deep as ten metres into the chalk, building comfortable living quarters and extensive communication trenches to the rear, complete with buried telephone lines. On the British and French side trenches were simpler, as they served only to hold troops prior to attacking. Between the two sides were extensive fields of barbed wire intended to hinder any progress across no man’s land. The battle plan was simple. The British and French forces would bombard the German positions with artillery. When the barbed wire was destroyed, and their trench system collapsed, the infantry would emerge from their trenches and destroy any of the confused and disorientated enemy who remained alive. A n astonishing one million shells, mortars and grenades were fired into the barbed wire and trenches. Then, at 7:30am on July 1st the British and French soldiers rose from their trenches and walked shoulder to shoulder towards the German lines. What they met was chaos and horror. First, because barbed wire isn’t easily destroyed by shell fire - it was merely rearranged. Second, the German machine guns and crews were deep underground and therefore hardly affected by the shelling. When the shelling stopped they took up position and fired on the approaching soldiers. A creeping barrage of shelling was used to get the Allied troops on top of the German trenches but this was a tricky manoeuvre before there were reliable telephone communications. The barrage too easily got ahead of the soldiers, or worse fell on their own troops. At the end of the first day thousands of soldiers were dead and wounded. Some units were completely destroyed - the New Foundland Brigade ceased

to exist. Many units lost half their number. In some sectors the Germans ceased firing allowing the uninjured and lightly wounded to return to their trenches. The casualties on the first day among the Allied troops were 60,000 of whom 20,000 were killed. In varying forms this battle continued from July the 1st until November 18th and just a few kilometres of ground was captured. By this time there were over 600,000 Allied troop casualties with a similar number of German casualties. In this slaughter there was the New Zealand Division of 15,000 members. Its casualties were 6,000 wounded and 2000 killed. Of the 2000 who died, four are recorded on the Sheffield/Waddington cenotaph: - Sgt Arthur George Compton, Compton Gnr Ernest Piner, Piner Pte Ernest Albert Sleeman, Sleeman LCP Frank Willis. The Battle of the Somme reverberated throughout Britain and its empire reaching into its farthest corners. “The Somme marked the end of an age of vital optimism in British life that has never been recovered,” John Keegan. Front L-R: Max Whyte, Olivia Burgess, William Morgan. Last week students from schools throughout Selwyn attended ‘Speed Date an Author’ at the Lincoln Event Centre. This exciting event was presented by the New Zealand Book Council with support from Selwyn District Libraries. There were workshops with five celebrated authors; Fleur Beale, Ben Brown, Frankie McMillan, Tania Roxborogh and Helen Taylor. We all had the opportunity to meet the authors and take part in their workshops. Tania Roxborogh was really inspiring and interesting. She talked about how you write a book and the structure of chapters and paragraphs. Tania was born in Christchurch and started writing at primary school. She decided to be a writer when she entered a writing competition at high school, she won this and decided she was actually ok at writing. Tania has written over twenty books and now teaches at Lincoln High School. Helen Taylor is well known for her colourful illustrations of native birds and plants. Many of us are familiar with her book called ‘The Thief of Colours’, which she illustrated with writer Ben Brown. She now writes and illustrates her own books. Helen showed us her own sketches and paintings to model how we could illustrate and write our own stories. She said it is important to know the story and characters really well and to pay attention to the words before

sketching. She started drawing as soon as she could pick up a pencil and when I grow up I wish I could be like her. Frankie McMillan, poet and short story writer, started with one of her favourite quotes, “A poem is a paper boat made of your own words”. She took us through a fun activity where we wrote our own poems in the style of Kim Wright’s, “The Magic Box”. We shared some of our poems and it was a shame that we ran out of time and did not get to hear everyone’s ‘Magic Box’ poems. They were brilliant! Fleur Beale is a famous, amazing author. She was inspiring and gave us some tips and tricks. She said it is very important in our writing to use our own imagination, stories and feelings. She took an extremely boring, factual, description and showed us how to make it more exciting. We then wrote a story about our names. She showed us how to take the reader with us and how to express a range of emotions like happiness, sadness, triumph and disappointment by showing the reader how it would be expressed by the character. Ben Brown’s workshop was called “Blood out of a Stone”. Ben writes stories and poetry for children and adults. He told us there are three essential elements to include when writing; character/s, setting, and something needs to happen, a problem. Ben says writing poetry and stories are two completely different things.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Malvern Bowling SubCentre held recently, Peggie Jenkins of the Kirwee Bowling Club was awarded a Life Membership for her contribution to lawn bowls. Peggie, who is held in high esteem amongst her fellow bowlers, joined the Kirwee Club in 1989, and her late husband Harley was a founding member. Very soon she earned the first of many spots on the honours board and went on to play as a

another area where Peggie has put in a great deal of time, and on any day there are bowls on at Kirwee, if she is not sitting watching the play, she might be found in the kitchen helping provide lunches or teas. Undoubtedly this honour is well deserved.

Clayton Yaxley, Yaxley Glenn Munro and Daryl Rhodes, who are all either local men or have had connections with the Malvern area in the past, have spent a bit of time on the road over the past months. The trio have travelled throughout the Island to compete in the South Island Three Hour Cross Country Motocross Series. Last weekend saw them undertake the final event round five in Blenheim. It also saw them come away with some outstanding results; second overall in their Class Team section. Clayton, in his individual event won the Veterans’ (35-44 year) Section. Glenn came close behind at third in the same Veterans’ class. Unfortunately Daryl, was taken out at the start of the third round when he broke his arm. However his overall points at that stage still managed to get him a good class results finish at sixth placing in the Veterans’ Section. At the time of going to print the overall results were still to be tallied up, but according to the team’s own tallies - Clayton is likely to have finished in approximately fifth place overall and Glenn in approximately eighth overall.

Each attendee creating a harakeke flax star in honour of Matariki, the Māori New Year. Selwyn District Libraries are holding Matariki events at all libraries this month, culminating in a final Matariki event at Lincoln University on Saturday, June 25th. On Friday, June 10th the Pukeko Team from West Melton School (WMS) constructed Matariki kites. Matariki is a small cluster of stars, also known as Pleiades. To Māori, the appearance of Matariki and Puanga (Rigel) signal the end of one year, and the beginning of the next. Traditionally Māori have recognised the rise of Matariki as a time to celebrate the New Year. For ancient Māori, kite flying traditions have a highly symbolic connection to Matariki - the two were historically inseparable. Kites were seen as connectors between the heavens and earth. The Pukeko learners, with the help of parents, were able to make a variety of different kites in all sizes and styles. Last week West Melton School Y5 & 6 students spent three days at Hanmer Springs Camp. School Camp empowers students to overcome, embrace and manage challenges that occur. The Moa teams were provided many opportunities to engage in activities, including tree climbing, tramping in the bush, with bush craft and a scavenger hunt.

KIRWEE DIVISION 2 This year’s team being captained by Austrian international Toby Messerer had a good start to the year on the back of a good pre season. Injuries took their toll on the squad, but the team came back from that with some good wins, high running metres from Lee Temomo and punch up the middle from Colin Payne. Coached this season by Scott German.

KIRWEE DIVISION 3 “Go the Wee!!” the team yells, it’s Saturday and here we are again and all smiles after another tough contest, not winners this time unfortunately, but content that we played hard and threw everything at it. Always happy to get together with our mates and play the game we love, prior to enjoying a few colds ones as a team ready to discuss rugby politics. “What did the young fellas in the team get up to last weekend and who with, stories about the end of year trip where 24 went on tour toppling the previous year’s tally of seventeen, where is the new guy from; another Englishman or perhaps Welsh?” We are never short on diversity in this team with men from Kirwee to Brighton to the UK, from 18 to 48 years, from retiring skilled players to new

Kirwee Rugby Club’s Div 3 team. guys who have never played. The only pre-requisite is that you enjoy telling a yarn and hanging round for a beer afterwards! A team that started out as purely a social side wanting to play footy on Saturdays. It didn’t matter as much back then about winning, perhaps for some it still doesn’t, it’s more about the camaraderie and the

chance to play our nation’s greatest sport. However the last couple of years the team has set the goal of becoming a competitive side in this fast maturing division 3 competition. And competitive we are, rattling the cages and scoring great tries, even against the super sides in our division - but it’s an eighty minute game as we all say!

Burnham players away on manoeuvres etc. hasn't made it easy for coaches Shane Dickson and Terry Dalton, both from Kirwee. But there is a hard core of regular players who are very keen and this is showing as the season progresses. At the start of the round, fielding a team, let alone winning, was the main goal. Now at the end of this round they have had some close games and three wins under their belts. They are really getting to know each other's play and are gelling together well. A great bunch of young men and if they keep improving as they have done they will be a force to reckon with. Go BDI KIRWEE COLTS!

The transition to playing older and more experienced players is a test for the team this season, but we have huge potential amongst the squad and improve every week. MALVERN UNDER 16 The 2016 rugby season has seen an enthusiastic and talented bunch of lads turn out with the usual swagger accustomed to boys of this age, but still in good form. New faces this year have helped bring added strength to the side. We train twice a week and have a real good team culture going, each player has respect and support from fellow players. The boys are willing to learn and have found out there are no soft options in this grade and so take on board what's been asked of them. Definitely a team to keep an eye on as the season progresses. Coached by Don Kars and Scott Carnachon and managed by Lee Longdin, this team are training hard and setting out as they mean to go on. The team is in a Combined Mid Canterbury/Ellesmere/North Canterbury competition travelling as far as Mayfield in the south and Culverden in the north. The team would like to take the opportunity to thank the Malvern Committee, the coaches, trainers and of course their very loyal supporters.

MALVERN UNDER 11.5 Malvern U11.5 team is a group of 26 enthusiastic boys from all four contributing Malvern clubs - including Kirwee, with many of them moving up a grade this year. They are being coached by Doug Mitchell and Bryan (Trout) Thomas. The team has had a strong start to the season and are now playing off in the top eight of their age group. Many of the team participated at the “Tiny Hill” coaching clinic, held in the last school holidays, involving 190 kids (9-13 years) from all Ellesmere Clubs. The purpose of these clinics was to allow players to develop their skills, enjoyment and understanding of the game. The Canterbury RFC have been running these “Tiny Hill” coaching clinics for forty years. This was a great opportunity for those attending to learn new skills and techniques. We are looking forward to a successful season and appreciate the support we have each week from our parents on the sidelines.

The junior side of the Kirwee Rugby Football Club is in great heart this season. With close to forty kids in the U7 teams this is a great sign for the future years ahead; especially next year as a large number will progress through to our U8½’s. The U8½’s are fielding two teams this year and have had some very good results. Most pleasing for us is the fact we have two teams in this grade in 2016 which will filter through to our U10's next year. The U10's have made a welcome return to Kirwee this year and although they were a bit short at the start of the season they have picked up two or three players and are playing some really good rugby; and have a great team spirit. A huge thanks to the coaches and managers who put in a lot of work during the season. KIRWEE UNDER 7 RED Kirwee U7 Red are enjoying a stellar season in 2016. Into their second season under the combined coaching of James Emery and Kye Johnson, Kirwee Red are showing good basic skills week to week. Player of the Day recipients have been well shared around with all the players improving on their personal bests. Kirwee Red are lucky to have their sideline studded each week with proud parents, grandparents and siblings who add to the high energy, positive atmosphere of this team. With many of our senior players heading to the Under 8 section next year we have many younger siblings ready to fill their boots and other team members are looking forward to mentoring their new team mates.

KIRWEE UNDER 7 GOLD Kirwee U7 Gold is a great mixture this year - containing first year players right through to year threes. In recent weeks they have started to play with real confidence and the older kids are a great help to the littlies. They have had a great run of wins this season and all kids and parents in the team are having a lot of fun playing and watching.
