Ashley and Jo Ross are the new owner/operators of Westmar Senior Care. Westmar, situated on Kimberley Road has been home to seniors for well over twenty years. Ashley and Jo are looking forward to this new chapter in their lives. Until now they hadn’t previously been in business, but they bring with them many attributes that will see Westmar continue to be a wonderful home for its residents. Prior to purchasing Westmar Ashley was a Christchurch Police officer and while Jo is currently continuing her career, also in Christchurch, she spends her weekends and days off assisting

her husband. “I really wanted a career change,” Ashley commented, “and could not pass up this opportunity at Westmar. In the Police I have enjoyed helping people all of my life and now Westmar will be a continuance of that,” he enthused. The couple are passionate about caring for Westmar’s elderly residents and are grateful to the township for their welcome. Currently, it is summer break for the US students and with most of them going back to their home towns for the holidays, Nicole has the University golf course all to herself! She has been practising relentlessly after gaining recent inspiration from the Women’s golf team at the University of Washington. The team won the overall NCAA D1 conference final and have two New Zealanders on their team. So Nicole is using this time to focus on her swing and the mental aspect of the game

to make it through to qualify for all tournaments this year. “It just goes to show, that although most of the people I speak to over here have no idea where New Zealand actually is, we can compete with the best of them,” she added with a smile. “It is my ultimate goal to play in the team’s Summit League Conference final,” Nicole concluded. This week marks the one year anniversary of Hororata local, Nicole Hamilton-Cross, gaining entry into Western Illinois University (WIU) on a golfing and study scholarship. After deliberating Nicole decided that WIU was the best fit for her having looked into twelve different colleges in the US, including Yale and Harvard. WIU is one of the top fifty colleges in the US and will enable Nicole to fulfil two of her long-held dreams, that of obtaining a Forensic Science Degree and travelling around the US to play golf. The News caught up with Nicole to see how she was getting on after her first semester at her new home in the US: “The definite highlight of the semester was our team’s spring break trip to Charleston South Carolina, then to Knoxville Tennessee, where we got to play in two different golf tournaments, which was a great experience. Everyone on the team has been so welcoming and we often joke about how I pronounce words differently, as many of them have yet to travel out of the States,” Nicole laughed! The keen golfer also filled the News in on her academic progress but admitted it did take her a while to figure out the US schooling system. “I was happy with my overall result. I gained a 3.7 GPA (out of a possible 4.0) and obtained semester honours which gave me entrance into the university honours programme. I also

During June Selwyn residents are invited to join in celebrations for Matariki – the Māori New Year. Matariki is the name for the group of stars also known as the Pleiades star cluster or The Seven Sisters. The New Year is marked by the rise of Matariki and the sighting of the next new moon. On Saturday, June 25th a free event is planned featuring renowned artist Marcus Winter who will tell the Māori story of creation through pictures. Marcus was a finalist in an arts category in the Ngā Toa Whakaihuwaka - Māori of the Year Awards 2013. He has performed at locations such as Te Papa, the Auckland Art Museum and the New Zealand Art Show. The celebration will also include Ngā i Te Ruahikihiki performing a mihi whakatau (welcome), and kapa haka performances by local high schools in collaboration with the Te Taumutu Rūnanga. The event is funded by the Selwyn District Council and will take place at Lincoln University from 2.30-

5.30pm. The afternoon is open to people of all backgrounds and it’s not necessary to be familiar with Māori protocol to attend. Registration is essential to attend this free family event. To register visit: www.selwynmatariki.eventbrite.co.nz

Selwyn Libraries have a range of activities planned to celebrate Matariki. Free craft sessions open to children and adults are planned between June 16-24 at libraries where artist Tracey Te Karu will show participants how to weave harakeke (flax) stars. Science Alive will also visit local libraries between June 21-27 to explain the science of Matariki stars and engage children in some fun hands on activities. These sessions are free and are recommended for children aged five to ten, with children seven and under needing caregiver supervision. Darfield Plunket are making a continued effort to get community families together having previously organised a fantastic Family Fun Day earlier in the year. All these Plunket events have been received extremely well judging by the number of attendees at Sunday’s disco. “The disco went really, really well,” said Plunket spokesperson, Ainsley Bell. Bell “We are so pleased with the turnout, around fifty children attended with their families, and everyone had a blast on the dancefloor,” she smiled. Local DJ, DJ Hitman played everything from Frozen through to ACDC ensuring that the dance floor was full for the whole one and a half hours of the event. “Big Blue the Plunket Bear was a huge hit, and the children enjoyed dancing with him and making a conga line around the hall. They also had lots of fun playing games of musical statutes and sneaking up on Big

Blue,” laughed Ainsley. Darfield Plunket thanks everyone that made this event possible with their generous donation of time and resources; with a special mention to the dads that helped with Big Blue’s appearance. “We hope to organise another disco later in the year, so anyone who couldn't attend last weekend will get another chance,” Ainsley added. “There are also other events coming up,” Ainsley said, “so keep an eye on the Darfield Plunket and Toy Library Facebook page.

Many coffees have been drunk, introductions made and new connections formed since the Selwyn Business Breakfast (SBB) group was established ten months ago. The group was form e d t o pr ov id e an opportunity for local business owners to meet one another, learn from each other’s experiences, and share ideas. Monthly meetings held at a West Melton café provide a regular opportunity for both established and emerging businesses to connect and learn. There are no restrictions on the geographical locations of businesses with the venue attracting many business owners from West Melton and Kirwee, in addition to others travelling from Darfield, Rolleston and Christchurch. Meeting are held on the last Thursday of the month (7am) allowing those attending to pop along before work without too much interruption to their day, just a slight adjustment to the alarm clock. The group was established with an open door principle so that anyone from any business background is welcome. A strong philosophy of the group centres on ‘what can I contribute’, as opposed to ‘what am I going to get out of this’. This guiding principle helps to ensure members focus on ways

Thursday, June 9th will be a night remembered by the Hororata Community Trust (HCT) as a night of accomplishment and recognition. Pitted against other amazing heritage projects; the Heritage of Hororata and Beyond project worked hard for their Highly Commended award in the Heritage Tourism category. "To have judge, Sheila Watson, comment that this project, 'represents a good model for other regional tourism offices' was high praise indeed and really justified the time and money invested in this project to date," commented overjo yed HC T Proje ct Manager, Cindy Driscoll. The Awards’ Night was held in the Great Hall of the Arts Centre in Christchurch and the night only got better for the HCT when they also received a Highly Commended Award for Outstanding Contribution to Heritage for their recent Heritage Open Weekend.

"Just to have made the finals of these awards was a great achievement for the Heritage project. There were some amazing projects in both categories and to be highly commended was a fantastic result," Cindy said. Through a multi-platform and collaborative engagement process, the HCT are raising awareness about the region’s colonial heritage, disseminating local historic information and records, and increasing tourism. Twelve properties are included in the project, located in Hororata, Coalgate, Glentunnel, Whitecliffs, Glenroy, Windwhistle and Lake Coleridge. “The Heritage of Hororata and Beyond project has been a collaboration of a motivated group from within the community and with the support of the Hororata Community Trust this project will continue to do great things for heritage tourism in the district," Cindy concluded.

Local Dance and Fitness studio principal Tara Marshall has just returned from an intensive training session with Franco Conquista the international dancer who created and developed Bounce DanceFit which was only released in NZ at the end of May. Not only did Tara love the training day but she was also chosen to be a ‘Pro Instructor’ by Franco meaning she will now instruct other instructors, around New Zealand, who are looking to start up their own classes. “However,” commented Tara, “my dance school must come first and as fun and exciting as this extra ‘instructors’ role sounds I want to bring the concept to my own school first and get it underway - which I will be doing from term three. We will be the first School in the South Island to offer Bounce DanceFit.” “Bounce is taught world wide now,” Tara added. “There is

also a J unior Bounce programme which I plan to start at a later date, and this is also something I would love to get into local schools as well! The Council met on Wednesday June 8th and made the following key decisions: Water Conservation and Demand Management Plan The Council approved a working draft of a Water Conservation and Demand Management Plan. The plan seeks to sustainably manage demand for water from properties connected to Council water supplies. Demand management has a number of benefits including reducing or deferring the costs of upgrading the water network to cope with higher demand, providing improved water pressure, complying with consent requirements and conserving water. The plan looks at a range of demand management strategies such as education, leak detection, water pressure management, the use of water restrictions, water charging and water metering. The plan will be further developed and public

consultation is planned on the options included in the plan, with a final version of the plan expected to be adopted by the Council within the next year. Closure of section of Paparua water race The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) requested that 0.8km of water race be closed along a section of its land along the Main South Road to reduce water race infrastructure under the new motorway extension. The affected section of water race is at the end of a water race network. All affected property owners (including neighbouring property owners) have agreed to the race closure. The race closure was approved, with the Council recommending that NZTA carry out a fish salvage operation before the closure and invite a representative from Te Taumutu Rūnanga to view this process.

Purchase of Central Plains Water Shares for two Council owned properties The Council agreed to purchase pre-construction and construction shares in Central Plains Water (CPW) for two council owned properties to allow for their potential future irrigation, ensuring the Council has a variety of options available for protecting and enhancing the value of each property. The two sites are Raeburn Farm – a 139.3ha property on Creyke Road which is presently leased for farming, but the main reason for owning the property is as a possible future site for a wastewater treatment plant. The other property shares will be purchased for, is Hororata Reserve. The Reserve has a recreation lake on it and water from the CPW scheme may be used to help fill the lake or be used for other recreation or irrigation purposes at the Reserve.

Twinkling in the winter sky just before dawn, Matariki (the Pleiades) signals the Māori New Year. Traditionally, it was a time for remembering the dead and celebrating new life. In the twenty first century, observing Matariki has again become popular. Recently, Darfield Preschool and Nursery opened their doors to family and whānau to celebrate the start of Matariki, otherwise known as the Māori New Year. Hirini, Hirini a willing parent, spent the day preparing and cooking a hāngi which was filled with vegetables kindly donated by Preschool families, Johnny Fresh and Four Square; as well as locally farmed meats (venison, lamb and chicken). As darkness fell across the Preschool, children, parents, grandparents, friends and teachers gathered around to watch the perfectly cooked kai being lifted out of the hāngi. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their delicious meal which was followed by excited children and adults toasting marshmallows on the bonfire in the sandpit. The weather conditions were perfect (although cold) and the clear skies allowed for star gazing with telescopes and binoculars. Darfield Preschool and Nursery values the participation of whānau in their children’s learning. This links in with Te Whāriki (The Early Childhood Curriculum) - the wider world of family and community is an integral part of the early childhood curriculum.

As part of an effort to reduce New Zealand’s cardiac arrest toll, St John ambulance officers and tutors are volunteering their time to deliver a free ‘3 Steps for Life’ community education programme to the public. “More than 1,200 people die every year in New Zealand after suffering a cardiac arrest. New Zealand’s cardiac arrest toll is four times the national road toll and yet it remains a silent disease in terms of public awareness,” commented St John Medical Director Tony Smith. ‘3 Steps for Life’ is designed to give all New Zealanders the confidence and awareness to take action when somebody suffers a cardiac arrest by 1) Calling 111 2) Starting CPR; and 3) Using an AED (automated external defibrillator).

St John’s last ‘Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest’ (OHCA) Report (2014/15) revealed that 64% of cardiac arrests occur at home and 19% happen in public so it’s vital that family members and bystanders take action. Applying CPR and rapid defibrillation can increase a patient’s chances of survival by up to 40%. But for every minute without CPR or defibrillation, a patient’s chance of survival falls by 10-15%. St John’s OHCA Report also r e v e a l e d Māo r i a r e disproportionally affected with a 40% higher chance of suffering a cardiac arrest than all other ethnic groups. As a result St John has developed a ‘Marae Cardiac Arrest programme’ using the 3 Steps for Life formula. St John Pou Takawaenga (Māori

liaison officers) are working with Māori communities and have engaged thirty marae around New Zealand to support training in CPR and access to defibrillators. “St John is committed to enhancing Māori community health outcomes through our Te Ara Hato Hone strategy, just as building community resilience is an essential goal,” said St John Director of Community Health Services, Sarah Manley. St John aims to deliver the free hour-long 3 Steps programme to at least 5,000 people over the next year. To help celebrate Arbor Day, West Melton School (WMS) have been busy planting Kōwhai seeds in response to the Kōwhai Sanctuary's promotion and celebration of the day. Arbor Day (or Arbour; from the Latin, meaning tree) is a day in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. This year, WMS Enviro’s focus has been on the Kōwhai tree and their links to the Kōwhai Sanctuary which is located near Halkett. The WMS Enviro team snipped seeds at the end (to assist with germination) and then gave each community a number of small pots, prepared Kōwhai seeds and potting mix. All local communities were encouraged by the sanctuary to participate in Arbor Day. Once received, WMS teachers spent time talking about the Kōwhai tree and how trees are beneficial to the, before setting about the task of planting the tree known as New Zealand’s national yellow flower. In term 4 there will be a schoolwide competition to see which learning community has had the most success with growing their saplings. Once the trees are established WMS students will plant them in the Kōwhai Sanctuary.

In recognition of Anti-bullying, West Melton School held a Pink Shirt Day fundraiser recently. All students arrived to the school in a wave of pink (you’ll have to believe us on this!) to participate in a variety of anti-bullying activities throughout the day. Students were encouraged to stand up against bullying and to promote positive relationships within the school, with the message "Speak up, Stand together, Stop bullying".
