Current Malvern Community Board Chair, Jenny Gallagher confessed she was extremely surprised when told she was to be awarded a QSM (Queen’s Service Medal), which was officially announced on Monday.

“I received a letter from Government House saying I had been nominated for a QSM and would I accept it,” Jenny explained. “This was confidential and it was really hard to keep it from my children, as we are a very close family,” she smiled.

Jenny has served her community virtually all her life and comes from a whole family who have, over the years, done the same.

“My family have always been community minded. It started with my Grandfather, David Henderson (JD) and then with my Father, Willie Henderson.

Henderson They were both actively involved in community projects like hockey, rugby and the Courtenay A & P Association.

From a young age, if there was a community project happening, I was always there and a part of it,” Jenny added.

“I have enjoyed contributing to a range of community organisations around Malvern and Kirwee since the 1970s and I have been chair of the Malvern Community Board since 2010.”

Jenny has worked with several community organisations over the years, including the Kirwee Model School Committee, Kirwee and Malvern Plunket Association, Kirwee Hockey and Tennis Clubs, Courtenay Agricultural and Pastoral Association, Kirwee Community Hall Committee, Malvern Lions Club and Kirwee Civil Defence Response Team.

“In 2008 I became a Justice of the Peace and have been actively involved in this role ever since,” she said.

Following the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes Jenny played a supporting role in the Community Civil Defence Response Team within the Selwyn District. She took on responsibilities with the Darfield High School Parent Teacher Association Committee from 1988 to 1990 and Chaired the

Add to this her involvement in many fundraising activities within the community and the organisation of events such as golf tournaments for Malvern Lions, catering for social functions, and tournaments for visiting sports teams, as well as assisting to raise $40,000 for the Kirwee Tennis Club’s tennis courts, it would definitely appear Jenny’s recognition was decidedly well deserved.

Jenny’s efforts have also been rewarded on prior occasions when she received community service recognition from The Royal New Zealand Plunket Society, the Selwyn District Council, and the Malvern Community Board, as well as Malvern Sporting Awards.

“I would like to thank my family and in particular, Terry, Terry my husband, for all the support he has given me over the years,” Jenny concluded.

Commenting that she does what she does because she loves it, vivacious, effervescent singing teacher and University of Otago Associate Professor in Voice, Judy Bellingham admitted it was difficult keeping her Queen’s Birthday award under wraps, until it could be officially announced.

Judy was honoured by becoming a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit at the weekend and will be fondly remembered from her role as head of music at Darfield High School over twenty years ago.

She inspired many pupils both reluctant and otherwise, into music and choral events before moving to Dunedin and furthering her career, qualifications and widely varied musical involvement.

When diagnosed with cancer, it’s hard to find the time or energy to think about anything other than treating the cancer. Dry July raises money to ease that burden, reduce stress and add a bit of comfort throughout the cancer journey.

Dry July help to provide things that may not be front of mind following a cancer diagnosis, such as getting to and from an appointment, somewhere to stay close to treatment, free Wi-Fi access, and mobile phone charging stations. They also help reduce patient anxiety and

the side effects of cancer treatment by funding free services such as complementary therapies, wellness programs, and wig libraries, and by providing comfortable and inviting spaces for patients to inhabit while undergoing treatment. Darfield Primary School PTA After a couple of years’ break and now with new organisers, the combined Darfield Rugby and Netball Clubs’ social committees invite the district to an exciting, re-vamped, fundraising extravaganza.

The 2016 Black Tie Ball (and yes character dress-ups are still welcomed and encouraged - for those that prefer to) will see the Darfield Recreation Centre transformed from a meeting place, to one of class and entertainment. While the Ball has taken on a new identity, it is still a major fundraiser and will this year benefit both Darfield Rugby and Netball Clubs. A

good time for all is ensured by the provision of one of Christchurch’s top bands. ‘The New Entrants’ have rocked Darfield on previous occasions and this Ball promises to offer more of the same.

The Black Tie Ball will take place on July 2nd, with a happy hour between 7pm and 8, along with a complimentary glass of something non-alcoholic, or something bubbly, on arrival.

Organisers have a courtesy van arranged to get ball-goers home safely (enquire with organisers about pick-ups in Darfield too) and spot prizes on offer will all add to the evening’s

fun and enjoyment.

The event is an R18 one and the Right Of Admission is Reserved, tickets can be bought in any number combinations, but a group of ten will find pricing to their advantage.

Supper is included in the ticket price and tickets are available from Rugby Club and Netball Club members, as well as from the Malvern News office (cash or cheque only). They are already moving fast and there will definitely be no door sales.

June 7th 1996 may have been just another day for some, but for Alison Donley it was the day of her final exam after years of training at the British College of Osteopathy and Naturopathy in London. She graduated with Diplomas in Osteopathy and Naturopathy, as well as an honours degree in Osteopathy.

Now twenty years on, she is celebrating all the opportunities she has had to help people's lives change for the better!

After nine years working in the UK, she immigrated to NZ in 2005 with her Osteopath husband, Stephen Harris, where they established the Dunsandelbased Matariki Practice.

Held in the NASDA (National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art) block of the Christchurch Polytechnic the New Zealand Dance Awards took place last weekend and were attended by dancers from local dance school, Tara Marshall Dance and Fitness Studio. The impressively equipped theatre facility saw equally impressive results from Tara’s local dancers.

“The competition was huge,” Tara commented, “and the biggest we have ever competed in, in New Zealand. Classes could have up to 26 dancers in one section and adjudicators came from as far afield as Australia and the USA, to judge.

West Melton School (WMS) have put out a challenge to other Selwyn schools to count up their twins in celebration of the astrological sign of the Gemini this month. Under the tropical zodiac, the sun transits this sign between May 21 and June 21 which prompted WMS to have a count up of their sets of twins. “We have eight sets of twins at the school and thought it would be fun to celebrate the month of the Gemini and challenge other schools to count up their twins too,” explained Promotions Officer, Rita Spadoni. Gemini is the third astrological sign in the Zodiac, originating from the constellation of Gemini and is represented by the twins Castor and Pollux.

The newly constructed country villa (pictured on the right), is the final product of the extensive and ambitious project to reinstate one of New Zealand’s oldest homesteads.

The building is a stunning and well planned replacement of the historic, 1851 homestead home of Canterbury pioneers William and John Deans. The original Deans country home stood proudly in the same spot for over 165 years until its destruction in the 7.1magnitude earthquake of September 4th, 2010.

Athfield Architects relished the challenge of rebuilding the homestead while capturing the historic character of the previous building. The Deans’ historic home rebuild won the ‘housing’ category at the 2016 Canterbury Architect Award Ceremony, which was held on Thursday, May 26th at the Hagley Oval Pavilion, Christchurch.

Athfield Architects used Corten steel cladding, which will deepen to a red brown as it weathers and two brown-red cantilevering decks to provide subtle links to the red brick of the previous

house. “The materials and colours of this contemporary design cleverly balance the agricultural and industrial contexts of the site and the histories of the previous house.

“The new building truly reflects the long history of the site by integrating salvaged parts of the original homestead in a lush pastoral setting,” the awards jury commented.

The awards are part of the peer -reviewed awards programme conducted by the New Zealand Institute of Architects.

The winning works set the standard for future architecture in the region making this quite an achievement for the Deans’ and Athfield Architects.

A community project has just reached its three-year target of improving 250 homes, six months ahead of schedule. The ‘Repair Well’ project, funded by New Zealand Red Cross and implemented by Community Energy Action Charitable Trust (CEA) offers the service of installing additional energy efficiency measures during earthquake repairs to vulnerable homeowners.

To celebrate the milestone and show the impact of the energy efficiency improvements on the people living in these homes,

CEA has created a video which was launched on June 2nd.

“Insurance companies and the Earthquake Commission will only repair houses to the standard that existed before the earthquakes. We add extra energy efficiency measures such as wall, ceiling and under-floor insulation, heating, ventilation and other improvements to increase the living quality of the home,” said Caroline Shone, Shone Chief Executive of CEA. “All the people we dealt with were in vulnerable situations, including older people, young

New projects are underway to help protect impo rtant ecological areas around Lake Coleridge.

Selwyn District Councillor Sam Broughton, Broughton who last year became Chair of the Lake Coleridge Habitat Enhancement Trust, said the Trust has appointed a Coordinator to help with the work.

Initially the Trust wants to install signage about iconic species that live and breed in the area and about wetland environments around the Lake.

“The large braided rivers around Lake Coleridge are important nesting habitats for some unique and threatened birds,” Sam added.

“Wrybills are perhaps the most unusual. They are the only bird in the world whose beak is curved sideways, which it uses to catch insects and larvae from under rocks in rivers. Banded Dotterels, Black-Fronted Terns and Black-Billed Gulls are also specially adapted to live and breed on braided rivers.

“Another spectacular and very rare bird is the Crested Grebe, whose main habitat is the South Island’s high country lakes.

rivers are important for fish and eels. Too many species are endangered and we need to do more to protect their habitat,” Sam said.

The Trust was established in 1998 as part of consent agreements for the Lake Coleridge Power Station. The

new projects are in addition to the Trust’s ongoing contributions to pest and weed control. New Trust Coordinator Toni Barlow has been living and working in tourism in the Coleridge area for the past five years and is excited about contributing to the Trust’s work.

So, the bloody thing updates and turns itself off and on what’s with that & why?

Windows 10 delivers its updates constantly and while the standard Microsoft client may be a city user with fast broadband - some aren’t so lucky! The facts that I see daily are that your machine starts to run slowly or does some strange things when it needs to update. The cure that I suggest, and use, is to, when I’m working on it, shut down and restart. If there are updates they will either apply themselves when you shut down, or when you start up. Either way the machine immediately feels refreshed and different and works as it should.

Sometimes it restarts when you don’t want it to and that is your fault.

Why? Because you didn’t do the above step. Yes I know nobody told you, but I am telling you now!

‘ThINKing in Print’ shows recent works by current Rangi Ruru Girls’ School art students and staff and opened at the Selwyn Gallery, Darfield last Friday.

Rangi Ruru Art Teacher, Kate Rivers commented that students regularly see staff and artists in the school residency programme producing their own art, design and photography work.

“Not only do all staff in the Visual Art Faculty produce works, but staff from other curriculum areas do so too, trying new things, taking risks and showing lifelong learning,” she added. “Our school is a vibrant and creative place, and all of us model behaviours we expect from our students. This includes producing works for this and other exhibitions.”

For some staff this is their first exhibition, for others, they are

old hands having shown works nationally or internationally, and sometimes both.

“Our role is to inspire, challenge and empower our students. Staff are delighted to be showing our works alongside the girls who inspire, challenge and empower us,” Kate said. “As a teacher this is an incredibly satisfying and rewarding part of my job.”

The Darfield U8.5 Rugby team had a number of outstanding wins at the Ellesmere JAB Sevens Queen’s Birthday tournament on Monday, June 6th. Hororata local, Murphy Kupe and ex-Sheffield local, Jordan Riki both played in the U17 Canterbury Māori Team, that competed in the NZ Māori Rugby League annual National Rangatahi Tournament.

The annual tournament was held in Hawera, Taranaki over Queens Birthday weekend and this was the first time that an U17 Māori team has represented Canterbury. The tournament allows teams to represent their whanau, hapu, iwi, and rohe with pride and mana and has the added bonus of NRL recruitment officers in attendance. The newly formed team came fifth out of eleven teams and look toward future tournaments to build on this result.
