The Selwyn Youth Council’s work has been recognised at the Youth Week Awards 2016.

The Youth Council received a Youth Group award at a ceremony at Parliament on May 24th.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony Sam Johnson, Johnson the founder of the Student Volunteer Army, said the Youth Council “has contributed greatly to their community” with Youth Council members “a passionate group of young people who wish for all young people in Selwyn to feel valued and connected to their communities.”

On the evening of Saturday, May 28th, the Darfield Recreation Centre became the hub of much excitement. Loud chatter, laughter and fun was abundant as over twenty Lions Club members and several partners, ably led by Gavin King and Brian Redfern, Redfern ran a mock Casino evening to raise much appreciated funds for the Darfield Rugby Football Club.

Over 150 Club members, partners and friends attended the event. Several were dressed colourfully and imaginatively to ref lect th e fi n ery a nd appropr iat ene ss of the occasion. George and Julie Ridgen were judged the best dressed ‘gamblers’ in attendance, and were rewarded accordingly.

On arrival, patrons exchanged

their entry ticket for a sum of ‘funny money’ to spend on the various activities, which included several well-known games. The first half hour was allocated for participants to explore the games on offer, and if necessary to learn how they are played. Following this, two seventy five minute sessions were held where players could use their skills to outwit and out think the Lions Club croupiers. It was interesting watching the various players desperately trying to recall mathematical skills learned at school, and delving the depths of analysis to make the best decisions to add to their ‘fortunes’. Each session was followed by an auction where players could use their hard earned winnings to bid for actual prizes. These prizes were

very generously donated by several individuals and businesses, for which all involved were most grateful.

The Malvern Lions wish to thank the Darfield Rugby Club for their cooperation in helping to make the night a most memorable one, and for providing continuous food, tea and coffee throughout the evening.

“We thank everyone again, for making the occasion such an enjoyable one,” said Brian Davidson, Davidson spokesperson for Malvern Lions.

Darfield Rugby Club President, James Scollay also commented that the Club is extremely grateful for the effort and support that has been shown by the Malvern Lions and looks forward to a repeat event in the future.

“A big thanks to the Malvern Lions and the Darfield Rugby Social Committee for making the night such a successful event,” James concluded.

West Melton resident, Maddie Collins desperately needs a life-saving kidney transplant.

If a donor cannot be found, the outlook is pretty grim for Maddie’s future. The chances are already slim for finding a donor in New Zealand, but the complications of Maddie’s current condition narrows the search even further.

However, even faced with the slim odds that this family must live with every day, there is still hope; hope for this desperate family who wants the best possible quality of life for Maddie. “How do you make a decision on your child's life; when it should end, while their heart is still beating,” is just one of the heartbreaking quotes taken from West Melton’s Sarah Collins’ recent Facebook update.

Sarah uses the social media site to update her daughter’s Facebook page: ‘Maddie Maddie Collins - “Imagine what I can do when I’m better”.

Twelve year old Maddie from West Melton desperately needs a new kidney before her current one fails completely.

Maddie was diagnosed with kidney disease in 2009. In 2012 her father was delighted to be able to donate his kidney, which was a medical match, thus offering his daughter the hope of living a near normal life.

However, Maddie’s body started to reject the kidney and in recent weeks efforts to keep her kidney functioning have been unsuccessful. Maddie’s kidney is slowly dying.

Her mum Sarah, is extending a public plea to find a suitable donor kidney for her daughter, as other options become more and more limited by the day.

Maddie is no longer eligible for a kidney from a deceased donor as experts could not guarantee the organ would survive this process. To add to this, desensitisation - whereby a ‘near perfect’ match is found and transplanted, is not an option for the Collins’ either. It is an untested procedure in New Zealand and would require new protocols and the lengthy process of then being approved by the ethics committee.

So what choices are left for Maddie? A dialysis line has been inserted into her body after kidney function dropped dangerously low last week.

Dialysis is the clinical purification of blood as a substitute for the normal function of the kidney.

Sarah’s main concern with this process is that it will reduce Maddie’s quality of life dramatically. Her daughter is still a normal teenager who has a love of horse riding and enjoying normal teenage activities. Dialysis will put an end to all of this, it will keep Maddie alive but there will be no quality of life. So it is understandable that Sarah is desperate to avoid this debilitating last resort.

The results are in and Darfield High School gained a number of awards recognising their talent and determination in this year’s 2016 Stage Challenge.

Stage Challenge and J Rock 2016 was held at three venues, involved two hundred schools, 16,000 participants and an audience of 25,000 people. Stage Challenge is a dance, drama and design spectacular where the students are the stars. Darfield competed in the Christchurch round on Wednesday, May 18th at Horncastle Arena.

The latest community garden waste day was held recently at Hawkins Pit near Darfield.

94 people took advantage of the locally appointed site with car and trailer loads of garden waste to drop off. Around 50% of vehicles came from Darfield and around 25% from

Whitecliffs/Coalgate, with the remainder from other areas.

“Over fourteen tonnes of garden waste was collected on the day to be composted.

People often place this material in rubbish bins or burn it but composting is a more environmentally friendly option,” commented Solid Waste Manager, Andrew Boyd.

The tamariki at Darfield Preschool and Nursery often visit Darfield Library on a Monday morning for ‘Storytime’ and the children enjoy choosing a book each to read back at the Centre.

However, the Centre is now lucky enough to now be visited by the community ‘Mobile Library’ bus each month. This has provided the children with a whole new learning experience, within their own Preschool environment! The children are read a short story on the bus and they get to choose a book each to be issued for the Centre. For many of the children this is the first time they have been on the library bus and some can’t understand why they aren’t going for a ride!

Darfield Preschool and Nursery Centre is committed to sourcing and using resources in the local community and having the mobile bus stopping at the Centre has been welcomed very favourably by the tamariki and teachers. Some of the Centre’s parents also come along with

The Youth Week Awards are held annually and recognise young people who have made a significant contribution to their community in areas such as the arts, culture, the environment and sport.

The Selwyn Youth Council has contributed over 2,000 hours of voluntary service to projects which benefit Selwyn. In 2015 the Youth Council ran sixteen events including skate jams, roller discos, a band competition, youth markets and drive in movies. These events were attended by 3,000 people.

The Youth Council established a pop up café as a social enterprise to train and employ around a dozen local young people, helping them gain skills which will improve their employment prospects. The café is run as a not for profit business with the proceeds from sales distributed as youth grants.

Local residents were provided with free hot drinks from the Youth Council’s pop up cafe, and invited to take part in games and chat to their neighbours in a park. These events were a great opportunity for people to meet their neighbours and form new friendships.

Each of the thirteen members of the Youth Council has developed their own passion projects which they are currently working to progress.

The service of local firefighters was recognised at an awards ceremony held on Monday, May 23rd at the Rolleston, Selwyn District Council Headquarters.

Government support for the Central Plains Water (CPW) Scheme was announced this week by the Ministry for Primary Industries during a visit to the scheme by Minister Nathan Guy. Through the Ministry for Primary Industries Irrigation Acceleration Fund (IAF), up to $6.64 million has been allocated to CPW to support completion of Stage 2 of the scheme’s development as well as $900,000 for the Sheffield Irrigation Scheme (a subscheme of CPW).

CPWL CEO, Derek Crombie has welcomed the latest funding announcements for the two projects.

Stage 2 will deliver reliable alpine river water to 25,000 hectares of very productive land.

“The scheme will allow existing ground water wells to be replaced as well as providing water for aquifer recharge, stock water and community supply if needed. These measures will help restore flows in lowland streams, Te Waihora, Lake Ellesmere and overall groundwater levels,” said Derek.

“The Sheffield scheme will integrate with the Selwyn district stock water system to provide both irrigation and stock water to a 4,000 hectare area of prime cropping land.”

Ministry for Primary Industries Director-General Martyn Dunne believes government support of schemes such as CPW and Sheffield is essential for the livelihoods of regional communities, and in turn the New Zealand economy.

“Through irrigation, land owners have options for the future of their land. For farmers who will benefit from the CPW and Sheffield schemes, they will have the options of using their land for arable, pastoral, dairy support, horticulture or dairy use.

"The IAF is a mechanism we use to support sustainable primary sector growth in the regions, helping to achieve the government's goal of doubling the value of primary industry exports by 2025,” said Martyn.

The IAF helps support the development of irrigation infrastructure proposals to the stage where they are investment ready, which means they must be commercially

robust and demonstrate a high level of community support.

Government also supports these projects through Crown Irrigation Investments Ltd, which acts as a bridging investor for regional water infrastructure development.

In many cases with irrigation schemes, stored water or dams can improve environmental outcomes because there is a more continuous supply of water throughout the year. This is because in times of high rain and water flows, water can be stored or dammed, to be used when the drier months roll around.

Having consistent water flows results in healthier rivers, offers a wide range of recreation uses and maintains the mauri and cultural value of rivers.

Firefighters from over 234 brigades across the country have set another new fundraising record for the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge on May 28th raising just over $1,161,000 for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand. The event hit the million dollar milestone for the first time in 2015.

More than 850 firefighters from across the country took part in the event, racing up the 1,103 stairs of Auckland’s iconic Sky Tower wearing 25 kilograms of gear. The 2016 target was set at $850,000 which was achieved three days before the event and continued to rapidly climb.

Congratulations to all of the local volunteer fire brigades that took part in the challenge.

Call Brent or Rob to make a booking ‘Speed Date an Author’ is an initiative run by the New Zealand Book Council to showcase local New Zealand writers to the public. Selwyn Libraries is collaborating with the New Zealand Book Council to put on this event for local schools at the Lincoln Events Centre. Local Schools (including Rolleston, Rolleston Christian, Sheffield, Dunsandel, Hororata and West Melton Primary Schools, along with Darfield High School) have chosen ninety of their pupils to participate in the event on June 9th.

“We are excited to have five local Canterbury and New Zealand authors and illustrators attending for the day to answer questions, interact and share their advice and wisdom with Selwyn students,” enthused Adrianne Mangan, Library customer services officer.

Organisers have secured the following authors for the event: • Fleur Beale Writes with an understanding of teenagers, male and female, and has the ability to motivate even reluctant readers.

The Hororata Community Trust recently announced that Dee Innes has been appointed as a Trustee. Dee is well known for her voluntary community work on various committees, as well as her advocacy for arts in the area; particularly while on the Malvern Community Arts Council and in instigating Celebrating Selwyn. Dee has lived on a sheep and beef farm in Windwhistle for 31 years with her husband Gerald.

Gerald “Dee has a wealth of experience across a wide range of community activities that she brings to this role, but most importantly she is passionate and dedicated to making a difference. We wanted to appoint a new Trustee that was connected in the district, as well as being able to see the big picture in terms of benefit to and development of, the wider comm u ni ty,” co m me nt ed Hororata Community Trust Chair, Richard Lang.

Lang “The Trust publically opened applications in March this year and we were happy with the positive response received. Dee has a lot of support from the community and I believe many people will be excited by this appointment,” said Richard.

Dee has been part of the Hororata Highland Games organising committee since its inception, organising the stalls at the event.

Dee Innes will join the Hororata Community Trust and looks forward to assisting the district to thrive on all levels.

“I wish to see the district thrive on all levels and I plan to be accessible to the wide community the Trust embraces,” commented Dee. “I feel my knowledge of this community gathered over 31 years, through a network of people and wonderful friends, many of whom I have gained through my community connections, will serve me well in this role and allow me to do the most good.

“I believe in the Trust’s vision and see the immense benefit an entity like this can bring to our rural community. The Trust works with the community on multiple levels but the ability it has to encourage collaboration, provide resources and succeed

at large scale projects is a wonderful asset,” she concluded.

Dee will join the Hororata Community Trust as of June 1st.

Lyn Nell, who has been a Trustee since 2012, will step down in August to concentrate on her family and other community commitments.

On Friday May, 27th all of the Glentunnel School children planted 800 daffodil bulbs between them along the school’s front fence.

The daffodil bulbs were a generous gift from the Hororata Community Trust. “We would like to thank the Trust for their generous gift and we all enjoyed digging and planting the bulbs.

It will certainly make people turn their heads to see the all of the glorious daffodils blooming in spring,” commented pupil Morgan, Glentunnel School Media Team.

Last week the Two Rivers Community Trust hosted an evening to help support parents understand the ‘Teen World’ and to highlight some tools for parents as they teach their children about adulthood. There were a number of helpful suggestions made by presenter Phil Baker from The Parenting Place to assist with a teen’s journey into adult-dom.

Phil offered valuable advice to willing participants and encouraged parents to first and foremost, display more compassion than criticism of teen decisions. Also highlighted was the importance of having f a m i l y h i g h l i g h t / l ow l i g h t opportunities (such as meal times together), as a way to hear about day to day things and keep on top of any issues or concerns as they arise. Most importantly, which some may take for granted, is just being

The fix for him was a cat door which is paired with a cat collar which is secured onto your cat. The door recognises the collar and only opens for your pet, leaving intruder animals at the door. The eleventh Windwhistle Golf Classic was played at Terrace Downs Golf Resort recently with a field of over 130 players. The event, held on May 19th, took place in sunny conditions with a moderate nor’west wind. While the sun enhanced the beauty of the picturesque course, the wind proved challenging at times for players - particularly on the green!

This golf tournament is the major annual fundraiser for Windwhistle School and plans are to use the money raised toward extending and refurbishing the old P.E. shed. It is hoped to also be able to buy new sports equipment for the SportsStart programme.

“This was the biggest tournament year yet. The money gained will be a significant boost to the school finances and help to support specific projects. This fundraiser is vital for meeting the needs of our children,” enthused Sam Richards, Board of Trustees Chair.

The keen golfers were treated to delicious packed lunches on course which were provided by dedicated school parents who met early on tournament day to attend to the catering. At the conclusion of the eighteen holes of golf, there was an opportunity to unwind and relax at the clubhouse before the prize giving.

After a couple of quiet ales and prize giving, Hazlett Rural Limited (HRL) provided auctioneers for an entertaining and action packed auction. A silent auction was also popular and saw much hilarity with ‘friend against friend’ bidding. The fear of missing out, coupled with old fashioned stubborn rivalry between these ‘friends’ meant that some great funds were raised for the School.

The combined auctions were a fantastic success, as was the raffle. Tickets sold by the school children were quickly snapped up for the great raffle prizes on offer.

The day concluded with a delicious buffet meal in ‘Hunters’ at Terrace Downs for the golfers, together with school parents and locals, in attendance. A great day out and all in support of a very special School.

Two years ago, Springfield Township Committee (STC) took decisive action to turn a local eyesore into a family friendly reserve. The public area, alongside Tramway Road, was part mud, part grass with electric tape fencing and a very tatty looking hut; the whole area was obviously in desperate need of some TLC. “The land was sub-leased from the Council by a tenant who used it as an area for horses. As soon as the sub-leasee found a new area to house the horse, the committee got stuck into

reclaiming the land,” explained Catherine Field, Field an STC spokesperson.

The community project began on a good note with soil being donated from a neighbouring subdivision. It was then graded, turned, graded again and sprayed several times for good measure and then graded again just to make sure! Local children were called upon to help pick stones from the soil to ready the land for fertiliser. Between them, parents and children managed to fill several loader buckets full with unwanted

Two years after the STC had initially begun the mammoth project, grass seed was sown and the final touch; adding trees, was carried out in April.

“On the day, there was a reasonable contingent from the community to help dig holes, plant the trees and water them with the aid of a couple of little excavators. Springfield now has an extension to the existing reserve which it can be really p r o u d o f , ” co m m e n t e d Catherine.

Now all of the hard work has been done to get the area in pristine condition for public use; the committee have voted to call the area Tramway Reserve.

“The committee would like to thank all of those who contributed time and resources to the reserve project - from local businesses to the children and families that helped to stone pick and plant trees,” Catherine concluded.

Selwyn artists are invited to attend a free workshop designed to help them learn tools to build or develop their professional careers.

The workshop, called ‘The Working Artist – Key Tools for Success’, will be held on Saturday, June 18th from 9.30am - 3.30pm at Lincoln Event Centre. It is designed to accommodate artists from all fields such as visual artists, writers, sculptors, dance, craft and other areas.

“The workshop is designed both for artists who would like to turn a hobby into a career, and for artists who currently sell works but would like to learn some tips on how to boost their earnings through better marketing, pricing and promotion of their works,” said Selwyn Arts Advisor Rachael Inch.

Inch Five speakers will cover a variety of topics at the event including how to approach galleries, how to reproduce works, running exhibitions, social media and website promotion and what arts

funding is available and how to apply for it.

Christchurch artist Donna Chisholm, Chisholm will talk at the session about leadership in the arts using the example of the $5, $10 and $50 notes.

American born artist Kate Spencer, Spencer who lives in Christchurch and is a founding director of the city’s The SPACE Gallery is another presenter at the session. Kate also established the FUSE art business initiative in partnership with Sarah Amazinnia. FUSE provides training for artists on working professionally in the art industry, including being selfemployed in the profession.
