Kirwee resident Simon Earl, has recently qualified to represent New Zealand at the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Amateur World Championships in Perth. Simon will race in the 40-44 year old category after finishing an outstanding 11th out of 83 at the recent UCI qualifier in Blenheim. “This is an international event and with only ten qualifying races held around the world and only one in New Zealand; I just had to have a shot at making the top twenty to qualify,” explained Simon.

The UCI Championships, which are held in September, will see Simon race in the 16km individual time trial and the 145km road race along with up to two hu nd r ed o th er competitors, from around the world.

Simon has been racing seriously for over five years and is a member of the race team ‘Kiwi Style Bike Tours’ who race in the Calder Stewart Elite Masters Series. This series entails six rounds which are held

throughout the South Island.

The keen Kirwee cyclist also races against the clock every Tuesday during summer months with the Canterbury Time Trial Club and trains between 10-15 hours a week to ensure peak fitness all year round.

Simon made the decision to cut down on his Saturday morning Club road racing once his children began their involvement with sports of their own. “Saturday races really clash with my boys’ sport, which I really enjoy watching and being involved with; and certainly don't want to miss out on it,” Simon added.

Family is extremely important to Simon and he attributes much of his success to their ongoing support, especially his wife, Kate. They will accompany him to Perth later in the year.

There is also another keen cyclist in the Earl Family, one who is beginning to make quite a name for himself on the cycling circuit.

Simon’s eleven year old son, Isaac recently represented Darfield High School at the Canterbury Primary Schools’ Duathlon at Ruapuna Speedway.

Isaac was 51st out of 144 after the first 2km running section of the race. He then managed to draw on his strong cycling experience and biked his way up to fifth place during the 9km cycling leg. He held on to fifth overall after the last 1km running leg. “It was so cool to watch him in action, he is just so determined and just doesn't give up,” said Simon proudly.

“Fifth in Canterbury out of this quality field is not a bad effort at all,” he smiled.

The Earl family are very much looking forward to supporting Simon at the UCI World Champs.

A long time advertiser in the News, RK Firewood has been keeping Malvern warm since 2002. Business owner/operator Rini Koopmans hails from a well -known Methven farming family and began his successful Firewood business with nothing more than a simple trailer, chainsaw and a rather aging Landcruiser. Realising the future potential saw Rini buildup the enterprise over the ensuing years and he now boasts an impressive array of equipment including a professional wood splitter, log loaders and a specially engineered wood cleaning machine which removes pesky bark from logs, in addition to running a fleet of trucks throughout Canterbury, the biggest of which holds fourteen cubic metres. Obviously as RK Firewood grew the need for labour to service the operation also grew and Rini has now created employment for six part -time staff. It’s a real family business with Rini’s fiancé Laura, Laura also assisting with administration when she’s not at her other employment at Terrace Downs High Country Resort, as a massage therapist in The Spa. While Firewood is still their core business RK’s have also branched (pardon the pun) into the supply of Macrocarpa railway sleepers, table tops and front of gate signs. While they source wood from numerous sites, the company is often much in demand assisting farmers with the clean-up of trees on their properties, both along fence lines, and after storm/wind damage.

Blue Gum is a hard wood providing a long lasting heat, but needs a good base to really get roaring. It’s great to keep the fire going overnight, which obviously makes it extremely popular. Then there’s Macrocarpa, a wood which produces not only long lasting heat, but also burns cleanly. It’s also great for keeping embers warm overnight,” added Rini passionately.

Kirwee Recreation Reserve representatives were delighted to receive the Automated External Defibrillator from Malvern St John.

Malvern St John have provided a n A ut om a t ed Ext e r n al Defibrillator to the Kirwee Recreation Reserve for all sporting and recreational users.

Matthew Forrester, Assistant Operations Manager of Malvern St John, and a staunch supporter of the Kirwee Rugby Club always enjoys his public duty at the Club’s games. This mad e h i m th e p erfect representative to present the defibrillator to Raewyn Feast who is a community representative on the Kirwee Recreation Reserve.

Malvern St John Area Committee has, over the last ten years, committed to providing

defibrillators in the community.

Defibrillators have been placed at Arthur’s Pass, Castle Hill Village, Lake Coleridge, Glentunnel and with the Darfield Police. The Committee also maintains defibrillators in Greendale and Hororata.

Early defibrillation is the cornerstone of increased survival in the event of a heart attack. The machine is designed to shock the heart and return it to a normal rhythm. The battery has a life of at least three years and is capable of delivering at least one hundred shocks. The defibrillators are easy to use; no training is required as the machine walks the operator

through all the stages that are required. Defibrillators are an amazing resource to have in the community and people as young as eight years of age have used them to great effect.

The new Kirwee defibrillator is located on the outer northern wall of the Kirwee Sports Pavilion, inside a box with an alarm system. Malvern St John offer their grateful appreciation to Gary Feast, Feast of GR Engineering and a Kirwee Rugby Club supporter, who generously sourced and donated the housing box.

Members of the Kirwee community are invited to attend a public education evening at on Tuesday, May 31st (7:30pm), so they can become comfortable and familiar with the defibrillator.

On Tuesday, May 10th, West Melton School sent a small team of eager athletes to the Canterbury Duathlon held at Ruapuna Raceway. Over 45 Primary and Intermediate schools participated on the day, with over one hundred students in each age group.

The nine and ten year old competitors ran two kilometres, biked six kilometres, ran one kilometre, while the eleven and twelve+ year olds Ran two kilometres, biked nine kilometres and ran one kilometre. West Melton pupils had some creditable results in the nine and ten year old girls age group: Stacey was eleventh out of ninety five, nine year old girls. Isla, fourteenth out of one hundred, ten year old girls, and Daisy was fifteenth out of one hundred ten year old girls.

Darfield Beauty Salon Bloom, located in Horndon Mews, McMillan Street, was inundated with pink ladies on Sunday, May 22nd. Owner/operator Ashlley McIntosh, held a Pink Ribbon Breakfast in the Salon to raise funds for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation with attendees adorning themselves in something pink.

Luckily, the weather held out for the breakfast goers as the building was full to capacity causing the crowd overflow to spill out into the car park. The guests enjoyed fun, games and quizzes which helped Ashlley raise over $700 for the New Z e a l a n d Br e a s t C a nc e r Foundation (NZBCF). The NZBCF is a charitable trust and therefore does not receive government funding - relying solely on donations. Their mission is to help prevent New Zealanders from developing and dying of breast cancer and to support diagnosed patients. The NZBCF achieves this by raising awareness for early detection, funding medical research,

making it a permanent fixture on the Bloom calendar each year,” Ashlley enthused.

Darfield High School student, Kerryn Tomlinson celebrated her sixteenth birthday on a winning note after taking first place at the Harness Horse Racing 2016 Lizzie of Rosslands Drivers’ Challenge held at Alexandra Park, Auckland.

Kerryn turned sixteen on Saturday, April 30th, the lay day between the first and second day of the two-day Drivers’ Challenge. “The trip was an amazing experience and winning the Lizzy of Rosslands Australasian Drivers series again was an honour,” Kerryn said happily.

Kerryn defended her championship with vigour and finished the series on an impressive 71 points which is testimony to her talent as a young driver. The series was held over two days and included twelve young drivers from Kids Kartz clubs from around the country. “It’s always a great thrill driving a lot of ponies that I have never driven, or even seen before; so no one knows how they are going to go. Just as thrilling is meeting new people to drive against from all over New Zealand and Austral ia,” Kerryn s aid enthusiastically.

Kerryn will be competing in her final Kidz Kartz event in November. After this, she will move up to compete in the junior driver category. “Thanks to all the pony owners who allowed and trusted me to drive their ponies. I am also grateful to the organisers for this event and my sponsor, as well as Mum, Dad and Canterbury Kidz Kartz for flying me up there,” Kerryn added.

Kerryn has also had the added bonus of having the support of her equestrian mad family.

The Malvern Game Hunters is set to get its twenty third annual Hun ng Compe on underway on the weekend of July 29th-31st, 2016. Billed as the largest hun ng compe on in the South Island, organisers are once again expec ng a large number of entries.

The compe on will begin on Friday, July 29th and will run through to 2pm on Sunday, July 31st. Weigh-in will be held at the Coalgate Tavern on Sunday, between 11am and 2pm, followed by the prizegiving.

As in previous years, a large number of quality Spot Prizes are on offer, including a Centre Fire Rifle from Hun ng & Fishing NZ. These are over and above the monetary prizes available for the heaviest Boar, Chamois, Stag, Thar and Wallaby and the best Douglas scores for Chamois, Stag, Thar, Tusks and Average Boar Weight.

There are also prizes for the most rabbits, hares and possums shot by an individual.

One of the drawcard events at the final weigh-in will undoubtedly be the Kids Carrying compe on (12noon start) and Open Pig Carrying compe on for men and women (2pm start), plus the wallaby carrying compe on for children. A perennial favourite and always a good photo opportunity, the compe ons are expected to be fiercely contested and create much spectator interest from the expected large crowd in aUendance.

The 2016 Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge will take place on Saturday, May 28th as a fundraiser for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC).

Each year firefighters from around New Zealand, Australia and the USA gain sponsorship and compete in this amazing event at Auckland’s Sky Tower.

This year will see Kirwee Volunteer Fire Brigade (VFB) send three representatives to the arduous stair climbing event; Ange Kraiger has had an outstanding start to her year already.

She secured a silver medal in her class at the eighteen storey/309 step annual Rendezvous Tower Challenge held in Christchurch last month.

This invaluable experience will put Ange in good

stead for the upcoming Auckland challenge. Dale Evans also has some stair climbing experience under his belt. He competed in the Auckland Sky Tower Challenge last year and is going with a view to bettering his time this year.

Last but definitely not least from the Kirwee Brigade, is Richard Rowlands. Richard has been training hard after joining team Kirwee for his premier Sky Tower challenge.

The Kirwee VFB have been fundraising for the

Leukaemia cancer fund for children to contribute the most they can towards a National goal of over one million dollars.

Selwyn met the 100% dog registration target for the eighth year in a row.

For the eighth consecutive year Selwyn District Council have achieved 100% re-registration of the district’s dogs.

During the 2015/16 year more than 12,500 dogs were registered with the Council - up slightly from 12,352 the previous year - and all dogs still in the district from 2014/15 were re-registered.

Senior Animal Control Officer Steve Clarke said the result indicates the majority of Selwyn dog owners are responsible and take good care of their dogs.

“The Dog Control Act gives Council officers power to seize any unregistered dogs, but thankfully it hasn’t come to that,” he said. “People love their dogs and are usually more than happy to pay the registration fee to avoid seizure.”

Steve said a number of factors contribute to the Council maintaining its 100% registration, as required by law.

“The comparatively low fees are one reason that people are registering their dogs. The fee is discounted if it’s paid in July, with the full fee payable from August. If fees are not paid the dog owner can expect a visit from an Animal Control Officer to

“Online registration, which was implemented this year, has made it even easier for people to register their dogs,” Steve added. Over 2,300 dog owners used the new online system to register their canines.

Fees collected from registration help to fund the Council’s dog control operation which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It includes community education and the ‘Dog Smart’ education programme provided in schools, along with enforcement activities, operating the dog pound and providing free microchipping for the district’s

Dog registration for the year beginning July 1st gets under way soon, and existing dog owners can expect to receive their renewal notices in the post, or by email, if they have chosen that option, before the end of June.

“We encourage dog owners to register early - and to sign up to receive their renewals by email and use the convenient online system,” Steve concluded.

Emily Wingham on Commander Cody who is being transformed from a retired race horse into a potentially prize-winning sport horse.

Emily Wingham is no stranger to hard work. Luckily, she thrives on it and in her line of business (she trains and sells horses and rehomes retired racehorses), this is not just a perk but a necessity. Emily will need all of her determination, experience and physical strength to win the challenge she has accepted; she has just under one year to turn a retired thoroughbred racehorse into a prizewinning sport horse!

Emily (22), moved to Darfield from Ashburton in September last year and brought her business, Vibe Equine with her.

Emily is truly passionate about rehoming or retraining retired racehorses so they can have a life beyond the track. “There is a common misconception that once retired, racehorses all head on a truck to Clover Meats, and that is really not true! The majority of horses are rehomed and trained as sport horses including some very high profile horses owned by Olympic riders,” explained Emily.

Emily also keeps a few retired horses for her own eventing purposes and is currently in the process of retraining thoroughbred Commander Cody as a sport horse. A sport horse can be trained for all or some events, such as, dressage, jumping, barrel racing, derby and freestyle. Days of suffering through the exhaustion and hard graft finally paid off when one of Emily’s horses was

selected in May to compete in the Dunstan Ex-Factor Challenge at Equidays in October 2016.

Emily will have had just under a year to train Commander Cody into a serious contender in the Best Performed Horse category.

To be eligible for the Dunstan Ex-Factor challenge, the entered horse must be a thoroughbred who has had no sport horse schooling before November 1st, 2015. This leaves approx. 49 weeks for Emily to transform the horse ahead of the challenge.

“He is now being retrained as an eventer and there will be a lot of work going into him in preparation for the competition.

There is also a prize for best represented on social media, so he has his own page on Facebook which is updated daily,” said Emily excitedly.

Commander Cody is no stranger to fame, or to winning, after securing an impressive $30,515 for his trainers Jan Hay and Andrew Carston (Ashburton) in his previous capacity as a racehorse.

T he D u ns ta n Ex - Fac tor Challenge is held in conjunction with Equidays which is a national three day equine event, held at Mystery Creek Events Centre, Hamilton. The Dunstan Challenge was introduced last year and will feature riders who are riding recently-retired thoroughbreds to compete across the three days of

Equidays. Beyond the Barriers NZ and Equidays have a joint focus on education across the equine industry and continue to provide a platform to showcase the ability of thoroughbreds outside of their traditional roles. Emily is excited about what this could mean for her and Commander Cody and is currently looking for sponsorship to assist her with travel costs to the Challenge.

While they weren’t one of the major award winners at the recent New Zealand Community Energy Awards local NGO charity Community Energy Action (CEA) did receive highly commended recognition.

CEA has been working on energy efficiency projects in the community for the last 22 years, received the commendation in the Community category.

The prestigious awards ceremony is held biennially and celebrates excellence and innovation in energy efficiency.

CEA has previously won the Christchurch Energy Champion EECA award in 2014. This year, with over 100 national entries, the competition was very high.

CEA was especially recognised for its Repair Well project in which energy efficiency measures were incorporated during the earthquake repairs of vulnerable, low income homeowners. The project was funded by New Zealand Red Cross and aims to assist around 300 households by the end of this year.

Repair Well is only one of many projects around energy efficiency that the charitable trus t opera tes aro und Canterbury. CEA also operates a Curtain Bank with free recycled curtains, helping 780 households last year, and a free Energy Advice Service. An insulation service made more than 1200 homes warmer and healthier last year. Many received extra funding through various projects, while

surpluses from unsubsidised insulation are supporting community projects for vulnerable households.

“We are very proud to be recognised for our efforts in the community,” said Caroline Shone, Shone Chief Executive of CEA. “But the real winners are the people in Canterbury living in more energy efficient, healthier homes.”

“This commendation does not just reflect our efforts. We wouldn’t be able to provide help on this large scale without the consistent support of funders such as NZ Red Cross, Orion, Ma inPow er, the Christchurch City Council, Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority and Age Concern and grants from Lotteries and the Rata Foundation.”

The Annual General Mee ng of the Club was held last week with many issues raised and resolved. Our numbers are holding steady, with a few new members joining during the last twelve months, which is most encouraging. In this busy day and age it is important to make me for ac vi es such as Garden Club and we try to compile a programme that appeals to all (not an easy task!). Trophies for the year were awarded to Carol Williams for most points cut flowers and to Kate Campbell for Novice Decora ve and Open Decora ve.

Both of these members exhibit regularly and deserved their awards. As President it gave me great pleasure to bestow on Mrs. Helen Williams the honour of becoming an honorary member of our Club. Helen has been a regular member for many, many years and has contributed greatly to the Club. We also thanked Mrs. Anna Clarke for her efforts as our Floral Co-ordinator for many years. Anna carried out this work with enthusiasm and respect for people’s wishes and made many an occasion even more special. With the enthusiasm of a great team on the CommiUee we go forward to another enjoyable year. Posy bowls were created and brought along to the mee ng, these being distributed to folk in the Community. We also brought along our ‘treasures’ to the mee ng, some very interes ng and old items were on display and you could tell from the stories aUached that these items were of great value to their owners. My own personal treasure, hubby that is, was paper hanging at our daughters house, so could not join in the fun! S ll everyone seemed to enjoy this par cular event, maybe we can do it again.

We then enjoyed a[ernoon tea and a catch up. So you know where we are, come and join us. Happy days.

Final repairs on the Bealey Bridge in the Upper Waimakariri Valley, State Highway 73 between the West Coast and Canterbury, will involve a full night closure from 8pm Saturday, May 28th through to 6am, Sunday, May 29th.

A Bailey bridge installed to enable the repairs to take place needs to be removed and other parts of the temporary access deconstructed.

The NZ Transport Agency has advised of the overnight closure widely and there will be

electronic signs at key points on State Highway 73.

Emergency Services in Greymouth are in close contact with the contractor also.

“There is no highway detour available in the Upper Waimakariri, so drivers need to take the Lewis Pass route between Greymouth and Christchurch, State Highway 7, for travel that night,” said Lee Wright, Wright Transport Agency Journey Manager.

The Bealey Bridge is about nine kilometres from Arthur’s

Pass on the Canterbury side of the Alps.

“T he T ransport Agency apologises for any inconvenience caused to road users while this important piece of bridge repair and reconstruction is completed,” Lee said. The repairs to the bridge and one of its abutments was scheduled to take three months from mid-April but work has progressed well and should be all completed by Queen’s Birthday Weekend, June 2nd,” Lee ended.

Selwyn District Council has confirmed its participation in the Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) Vote2016 camp aig n to inc re ase nationwide voter participation in the October local elections to more than 50 percent.

Local election turnout has been declining since the 1980s and only 42 percent of New Zealanders voted in the 2013 elections, down from 49 percent in 2010. In Selwyn 43 percent of voters cast their ballot in 2013.

Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe said it’s important that Councils work together to encourage residents to vote. “The campaign reinforces how important it is for residents to participate in local elections, and influence the shape of their Council with their vote.

The decisions that local people make can have a far-

reaching impact on the future well-being of our district and our residents.”

LGNZ’s Vote2016 campaign will work with participating local Councils, national businesses and community organisations to showcase the value local government provides to communities across the country.

LGNZ President Lawrence Yule welcomes Selwyn District Council stepping up to partner with LGNZ in the Vote2016 campaign and ultimately help build a stronger community through more engaged local democracy.
