The Music Managers Forum (MMF) Music Managers Awards 2016, saw local singer/ s ongw r iter/m an ager M el Parsons win the ‘Best Independent Tour’ category.

The prestigious awards event, held in Auckland on Tuesday, May 10th, hosted some of the most influential artists in the New Zealand music industry.

Darfield’s Jase Collins is not only a ski aficionado and co-owner of New Zealand Ski Instructor Training (NZSIT), based in the ski areas of the Craigieburn Range, but has also managed to persuade the New Zealand Ski Industry Association (NZSIA) to schedule an instructor’s examination locally at Porters.

The NZSIA Level 1 examination, to be held (July 18th - 22nd), during the school holidays is a great opportunity for local school and university students to get a qualification, that can lead to a career anywhere in the world.

“The exam is set up to allow you to gain confidence in skiing and teaching methodology, in a fun and relaxed environment. NZSIA

qualifications are one of the m os t h igh ly r es pe ct ed qualifications globally allowing you to work both in NZ and abroad,” Jase commented.

To prepare for the examination process, Jase will run a brief training course prior, for those maybe just wanting a day or two to assess where they’re at, before the exam proper. Jase’s training is held in the Craigieburn’s because, as he puts it, “ they’re big on terrain, small on crowds and home to some of the best in-bounds, offpiste, skiing in the world. It is the Southern Hemisphere's biggest and most diverse ski

region with five ski areas to choose from.

“I will be offering some preexam clinics at Porters and these can be conveniently run at weekends and in the school holidays, for those wanting to em bar k on th e NZ SIA qualification process,” Jase said.

“I also have a couple of places still available (six students maximum per group) in a full NZSIT training course which will run from late June/early July for anyone interested in really furthering their skiing career.”

Unique, locally based, and bringing cheer to those in hospital or rest homes are just some of the superlatives to describe ‘The Flower Garden NZ’.

The Flower Garden NZ is a registered Charitable Trust begun by Darfield’s Janine Thomson with the intention of brightening the day of those in hospitals or rest homes, while also assisting those with an over abundance of flowers, either in the garden, or following an event. Often after a wedding, a birthday, or even a funeral the sheer volume of floral arrangements can be overwhelming - and too beautiful to bin, when they could bring such pleasure to others.

“I gained qualifications as a chef,” Janine smiled, “and have worked in hospitality most of my life. My two children are now adults and so the Flower Garden was born - created out of the desire to make a difference in the lives of those confined to hospital or living in a rest home.

My partner Rick, Rick works as a diesel mechanic and assists me with the deliveries in his time off. Janine and Rick moved to a lifestyle block close to Darfield last year and eventually plan to plant it with flowers and foliage for their charity.

“Gifting a posy of fresh flowers to patients/residents, can brighten the day of those having a difficult time and bring a smile to their faces. Flowers can be a way of reaching out and showing that someone cares.

“We are always respectful and understand the hospital is a place where people are unwell

and are healing. So accordingly we conduct our services in a quiet and polite manner,” Janine stressed.

Feedback from hospital staff and patients is all positive ranging from comments about improving emotional well being, to making folk feel happy and brightening up a sterile-looking environment.

However while Janine receives flower offers from many people t h r ou gh h er ex t en s ive networking, she would be extremely grateful for more donations of flowers, foliage and greenery from home gardens, weddings, events, flower growers, or in fact anyone able to contribute to this project.

“Please spread the word for us,” Janine said, “to date (since we began in July 2015) we have delivered over 2432 vases of flowers, due to the kindness of those people who donate fresh blooms. We are currently look in g f or ideas f or fundraising, in case our donated supply falls short. If anyone has any ideas/expertise in this area, could they please contact me at: donateflowers@gmail.com

These li9le creatures can actually freak people out. Going into a room and finding hundreds of flies si ng around the windows or stacked between the curtain material and the lining, can be just too much. And you can’t blame them, because if not controlled they can gather in their thousands. We have seen roof cavi es stacked so thick you can’t see the raLers. It all starts with the male fly.

He’s the one you see flying around aimlessly in the middle of a room, in an irregular circle, every now and again going to the centre to have a dog fight in mid-air with one of his other male mates. They look very emaciated and seem to fly nonstop all day. At night they land upside down under a pot plant leaf or sliding door track, so you can never find them. The female on the other hand is outside merrily going around the flowers ea ng nectar much like a drone bee. She lays her maggot on an earthworm which becomes the host. So this makes them more of a problem in rural areas than a city, because there are more earth worms available to them.

When the male is ready he will find a warm dry place, usually in a house or ceiling space, and once he is happy, lets off a pheromone. That tells all the females it’s me to come in for the winter, and they do - in their thousands.

They can some mes be seen on the warm side of a building in the morning warming up in the sun, before heading out for the day. We have heard instances of this happening every year for five or six years to the one house and then they never see them again. Good treatment is a specialised product not available to the public, and cluster flies definitely don’t like it!

A sizeable crowd gathered at Kirwee Model School on Friday, May 13th to farewell long serving bus driver, Trevor Evans.

Evans Trevor, who has now begun his well deserved retirement, has been driving the Kirwee Model School bus for nearly thirty years. Bus company Torlesse Travel’s owner, S an dra Rabbidge commented that she was very sad to see Trevor leave. “We definitely need more ‘Trevors’ in our business. We have never had one complaint and he has never received any traffic offences - which is an accomplishment in itself. But more than that, Trevor has been the trusted face of our company and our link to the Kirwee community for many, many years,” Sandra added.

Local Selwyn MP Amy Adams rescheduled her busy day to also attend Trevor’s farewell.

Amy recounted fond memories as her children had been students not only at Kirwee School, but had also ridden on the school bus with Trevor some fifteen years ago.

“Trevor made me feel at ease when putting my five year old son on the school bus for the first time. It’s no easy task when your child is so small and travelling for the first time.

Local MP Amy Adams farewells recently retired Kirwee Model School bus driver, Trevor Evans.

Trevor has always been upbeat and friendly and has truly embraced his position of trust within the community,” she commented during her speech.

There were many more accolades from well wishers in attendance, testimony to how many lives Trevor has touched in the last thirty years. Trevor, who was understandably emotional during the farewell did not speak extensively, but

did convey that he has enjoyed his role tremendously over the years. Trevor’s retirement plans include doing jobs at home, spending more time with his daughter and trying to stay out of mischief!

Thursday, May 12th was International Nurses Day; Florence Nightingale’s birthday and the day when all around the world people take the time to thank nurses for the great work they do - as did those celebrating it in Darfield.

New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) Manager, Nursing and Professional Services, Jane MacGeorge commented that Nurses are the largest profession in the health system, and without them the health outcomes for people receiving care and treatment would not be improving, as they are.

The New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) is the leading professional body of nurses and nursing union in A otearoa N ew Z ealan d, representing over 46,000 nurses and health workers.

Members include nurses,

midwives, students, kaimahi hauora, health care workers and allied health professionals.

In Darfield International Nurses Day was embraced at Westmar Senior Care where staff member and Nurse Robyn Macklin created replicas of the starched nurses’ caps of yesteryear and even found uniforms from various eras to accompany them. Residents, some of whom had been nurses themselves, or had occasion to be incredibly appreciative of them, enjoyed the celebration wholeheartedly.

Reminiscing Westmar residents made many comments about the day - all of them interesting and entertaining:

Ruby remembered wearing the old hats, starched aprons (that were so uncomfortable), big thick stockings - that you daren’t have any holes in, or matron would have stern words

with you!

Marjorie remembers her days as a Karitane nurse, Matron was always waiting at the door at 11 o’clock to scold you if you were late!

Audrey remembered the night shifts where she had to do all the sewing jobs: darning socks, hemming trousers, sewing on buttons etc - while everyone slept.

Barbara recalled wearing navy blue dresses in her nursing days. Going home after night shift not her favourite time and the noises in the bushes when walking home - were rather scary.

Betty H. remembered sterilising the dental equipment in boiling hot water and always burnt her fingers - until she found rubber gloves!

Betty G. remembered her cat following her to work and spending the shift with her!

Darfield’s Nathan Simon had wanted to show students at Darfield Primary School how his milk tanker operated for some time and on Tuesday morning he had the opportunity to do so.

Nathan’s son Kyan is a pupil at the school, and many of his fellow Fonterra workers also have children there as well.

Nathan was over the moon when Fonterra bosses granted his request to visit the School and let the students get ’up close’ to the tanker. “The children all get milk in schools and it is great for them to see part of the process of getting it to them,” Nathan said. The children were very excited to see the mechanics of the tanker and also asked many question about Nathan’s job itself.

On Friday, May 7th, schools and early childhood centres from the wider Malvern area gathered at Darfield Primary School for the inaugural Teachers’ Top Team competition. In all fourteen teams made up of teachers from a mix of schools completed a variety of fun, team building, activities.

This was a Community of Learning event designed to develop the relationship of teachers from across all nine schools and two early childhood centres in the locality.

A free workshop later this month aims to help aspiring and established local writers get their works published.

The workshop is the second opportunity for the newly established Selwyn Writers Network to meet. The first meeting of the new network in February attracted over forty writers. The workshop, planned for 6.30pm on Tuesday, May 24th at the Lincoln Event Centre, will be presented by Jenny Howarth from Wilys Publications. Jenny is a New Zealand novelist, non-fiction writer and journalist with a Masters degree in History. Her

publications include The Art of War: New Zealand War Artists in the Field 1939-1945, Hooked: the Story of the New Zealand Fishing Industry and The Road's the Mode: The Story of New Zealand's Road Transport Industry.

Jenny will cover how to approach a traditional book publisher, including writing a synopsis, cover letter and biography of yourself and how to self-publish a work. The workshop will also look at the advantages and risks of selfpublishing, the importance of reviews and how authors can get their books into shops and

libraries.

Arts Advisor Rachael Inch added that the workshop is being organised as previous surveys of local writers have identified that they wanted to receive more information about how to publish their works.

The workshop will run for around two hours and is free to attend, however registration is essential. To register email: arts@selwyn.govt.nz by May 17th.

To the Editors: At 6.30pm last Thursday an old man was struggling to keep his feet in an exceptionally strong wind outside of the Take Away, opposite Taege’s Four Square.

Two, or perhaps three, unknown Good Samaritans came to assist and helped him into his car uninjured, and for that I am extremely grateful and happy to acknowledge the fact publicly.

We are most fortunate to live in a community where such acts of kindness occur. May it always remain that way.

The new playground at Darfield Domain is already a huge hit with the young folk of Darfield.

Stu Gillanders, Gillanders President of the Darfield Recreation Centre committee, commented that it made him extremely happy to see so many children making the most of the brand-new play area. The peak time for children playing in the area is on a Saturday - before or after their sports, or while parents are playing/watching netball or rugby. “There was a need for an upgrade to the old netball courts and it seemed a great time to plan a new playground too,” Stu said. The new layout does away with the old pea gravel ground cover meaning parents will no longer find piles of stones on the carpet after their children have kicked off their shoes! This has been replaced with durable safety matting, much to the delight of not only parents, but also those in charge of the surrounding grounds. “You will never understand what a great thing the matting is, until you have had to sweep the pea gravel from an entire netball court before a game,” laughed Stu.

Arts and culture play an integral role in building community spirit, developing social networks and providing opportuni es for enjoyment in the community.

The Selwyn Arts Trust in associa on with Selwyn District Council is invi ng people to share their views on how the arts can be developed in Selwyn.

A new survey has been released as part of a consulta on with the community to ascertain key areas where the arts can be improved and developed in the district.

Selwyn District Council Arts Advisor Rachael Inch said the survey will indicate how the arts community should look in the future. “The feedback we gain from the survey will give us a clear picture of the support ar sts in Selwyn need in order to build a thriving arts community.”

She encourages everyone living in the district to answer the survey. “Even if you don’t par cipate in the arts we are keen to hear your views on how the arts should look and feel in our district.”

Selwyn Youth Council Chairperson Emily de Rooy will be heading to Parliament this month, as the Youth Council has been named as a finalist in the New Zealand Youth Awards.

The awards are held annually and recognise young people who have made a significant contribution to their community in areas such as arts, culture, environment and sport.

The Selwyn Youth Council was formed in 2013 and since that time has worked on a wide range of projects. Collectively the Youth Council has contributed over 2,000 hours of voluntary service to projects which benefit Selwyn. In 2015 the Youth Council ran sixteen events including skate jams, r oller dis cos , a ban d competition, youth markets and drive in movies. These events were attended by 3,000 people.

The Youth Council established a pop up café as a social enterprise to train and employ around a dozen local young people, helping them gain skills

which will improve their employment prospects. The café is run as a not for profit business with the proceeds from sales distributed as youth grants.

Over the summer of 2015/16 the Youth Council, with assistance from Selwyn District Council, undertook ‘Meet your Street’ where they visited 34 different communities in Selwyn.

Local residents were provided with free hot drinks from the Youth Council’s pop up cafe, and invited to take part in games and chat to their neighbours in a park. These events were a great opportunity for people to meet their neighbours and form new friendships.

Currently each of the thirteen members of the Youth Council, with assistance from an adult mentor, has developed their own passion projects, while collectively, the Youth Council will work on running a youth arts’ festival, expanding their community access radio station and presenting a music festival,

as well as the opening of Generation House. This is a creative community space which will include a café, meeting area, wellness clinic, community radio station and arts space; “Selwyn is very lucky to have such an active, committed group of young people on our Youth Council,” commented Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe. Coe “I am overwhelmed by the support that the Selwyn District Council and the Selwyn community has given to our organisation. We have come so far in such a short space of time and are truly grateful for those backing us every step of the way,” Youth Council Chairperson Emily added.

“Chris Chris Martin, Martin our Youth Advisor, has been incredibly dedicated and passionate in giving us the opportunities that have allowed us to grow and develop as leaders.”

The New Zealand Youth award winners will be announced by Hon. Nikki Kaye, Minister of Youth, at a ceremony in Wellington on May 24th.

The Council is inviting submissions on draft Area Plans for Malvern and Ellesmere.

“The Area Plans will guide the growth of townships in Ellesmere and Malvern through to 2031,” said Andrew Mactier, Mactier Strategy and Policy Planner.

The Malvern Lions Golf Tournament, held at Greendale Golf Club on Thursday, May 12th, was a much appreciated fundraiser for the Malvern Community Patrol. The picturesque Greendale course was complemented by sunshine and warm weather, along with a field of extremely happy golfers.

126 players flocked to the Course from local and Canterburywide des na ons to par cipate in the well-supported, annual tournament. Fortunately players were sheltered from prevailing gale force winds and this provided perfect condi ons for the Ambrose match.

At the golfing conclusion, players were treated to a meal at the Club house thanks to the labours of a group of hard-working volunteers. Due to the overwhelming support from local and Christchurch district sponsorship, nearly everyone received a prize for their golf efforts.

The Malvern Lions’ golf tournament is an annual event and funds raised are donated to a different charity each year. The Council met on Wednesday May 11th and made the following key decisions: Council backs plan for Council was to consider the joint public transport proposal today. Cr Sarah Walters was appointed as committee: The Council has formally agreed to the establishment of a public transport joint committee for greater Christchurch, which is expected to also include Environment Canterbury, Waimakariri District Council and Christchurch City Council.

The Councils have been reviewing arrangements for public transport in greater Christchurch since late 2014.

The provision of an effective public transport network is seen as an essential component to the long-term r eco ve ry of gr ea te r Christchurch, and a joint committee would be a significant step towards improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the public transport system.

Environment Canterbury and Waimakariri District Council have already endorsed the proposed joint committee, while Christchurch City

the council’s representative on the committee, to be known as the Greater Christchurch Public Transport Joint Committee.

Report notes 100% dog registration in district: The Council adopted the statutory annual report on dog control policy and practices for the 2014-15 year. The report noted that during the year to June 30 2015, 100% of dogs still in the district from the previous year were registered. During the reporting period a total of 12,352 dogs were registered across the district. The Council dealt with 1,352 complaints, of which 77% related to lost, found or wandering dogs, and a further 13% to barking. 130 Infringement Notices were issued for various offences under the Dog Control Act.

Paddy: “Get an ambulance here quick, he's bleeding from his nose and ears and I nk both his legs are broken.”

Operator: “What is your loca on sir?”

Paddy: “Outside number 28 Eucalyptus Street .”

Operator: “How do you spell that sir?”

Silence.... (heavy breathing) and aLer a minute.

Operator: “Are you there sir?”

More heavy breathing and another minute later.

Operator: “Sir, can you hear me?”
