Darfield’s Rural Building Solutions (RBS) won Silver at the NZ Master Builders Commercial Project Awards in Auckland last Friday night at a sold-out gala evening MC-ed by Hilary Barry.

Barry RBS provides high quality dairy shed design and build services to the Canterbury region, and is the first to enter a dairy shed in this prestigious event.

Owners Nigel and Ruth Hodges, who have a background in the commercial building industry, set up RBS in 2009 to provide commercial building quality, to the rural sector.

“I found the rural building industry had very inconsistent quality and results,” Nigel commented. “Coming from a commercial background I knew we could offer high quality results every time.”

Confirmation that he has achieved just that has come in the form of the Silver Award from the NZ Master Builders Commercial Project Awards for 2016.

These awards are the pinnacle of commercial construction in New Zealand. Their aim is to ‘recognise New Zealand’s out st a nd in g co m me rci a l

construction and the project teams that work together to create our city skylines and rural landscapes’.

The silver award was for a RBS sixty bail rotary shed, built for Linda Hofsteede at Homestead Farm, Alford Forest.

Initially fully booked for the year, Nigel had no slots left when Linda approached him to build the shed for her. However he knew Linda and her project manager would be a great team to work with, so after some tweaking, he managed to fit them in as last build of the

season.

“I knew their communication and clear decision-making would make this a successful build, even under time pressure - and it was,” Nigel added.

Linda still has the original ‘wish list’ for her shed requirements, and at the end of the build she was able to say that yes, she got everything she wanted.

So pleasing was the resulting build for everyone involved, that Nigel entered it in the 2016 Commercial Project Awards.

On Monday, May 9th interested persons in the community were invited to ‘A Sporting Night Out’ held at Darfield High School.

Hosted by the new Malvern Sport and Recreation Board, it was a night where local sporting heroes shared their success stories, and sector experts revealed the latest ‘best practice’ in providing sport and recreation opportunities.

The evening started with nibbles and a networking session followed by a presentation on Physical Literacy by Susie Stevens from Physical Education New Zealand. Glenn Fyall from the University of Canterbury followed, speaking about Coaching in this day and age.

Those attending found both speakers to be interesting and informative. The evening concluded with a ‘question and answer’ session for the Celebrity Panel. The panel consisted of: Aaron Orangi of Darfield Pharmacy who has competed in

travelled far and wide with his extreme sea kayaking and mountain climbing to name but a couple of his pursuits. He spoke of his east to west crossing of icecaps in Greenland, along with many other exciting expeditions he had participated in.

More than a hundred members, ex members and friends gathered recently in the Kirwee Community Hall to recall the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to the future, on the occasion of the Kirwee Players Fortieth Jubilee Dinner.

The organising committee Patricia Henderson, Henderson Mabel Knight, Knight Janet Taege, Taege and Edward Stott, Stott accepted the challenge with gusto to arrange a night which all present will remember for some time.

Mabel as Mistress of Ceremonies set the evening in train by asking Rob Kellock to roll call for each production, year by year, and asking those present involved in each show to stand. Some were on their feet all, or most of the time!

Janet was invited to say grace, after which a meal, worthy of the occasion, was served with panache by Kirwee Hall Committee caterers.

During the evening Linda Gosling, present Chairperson of Kirwee Players, introduced Diane Flavel representing the N.Z. Theatre Musical Federation.

In conclusion a hearty rendition of ‘There’s no Business Like Show Business’ echoed throughout the hall.

As those attending, began to leave, frequently the comments, “what a great night!” were heard, with most adding, “roll on the fiftieth Jubilee”.

Unfortunately the owner of the land both Gnomes and Malvern News sits delivered the blow that both businesses were required to vacate the space and now the new, amazing, huge Gnomes Alpine Sports store has been created further along South Terrace. Much planning, building, long hours and professional expertise has gone into creating a second to none retail and rental space, the like of which Canterbury has never before known, and all here in Darfield.

Darfield is on the best route to all Canterbury’s ski fields and Gnomes is poised to take advantage of that fact. It’s a huge win-win for locals who have all this right on their doorstep. In awarding Silver to RBS, the judges noted, “in an industry where it’s as much about the handshake, as it is about the contract, the design and build of a sixty bail, rotary style, dairy shed and yard was delivered by a highly collaborative team,

working together for the first time.”

Nigel is delighted with the team effort that produced this great result, saying he is proud of this shed and of all the sheds RBS builds. “We build every shed as if it is a show shed,” he concluded.

Understandably nine year old Fergus Bennett looks very pleased with his trophy.

Nine year old Fergus Bennett of Darfield raced at the Hanmer Springs Dirt Bike Club event on April 30th against nine others in the 6-11 year old trail class.

Fergus won his first race and also won his second, before coming off the bike in the last lap of race three. His results

were enough to gain him the First Place Trophy - which needless to say, he was extremely pleased to receive.

His next race will be in Homebush on Dean’s Road at the King of the Bowl on May 22nd for the first round of five.

Congratulations to Darfield’s Ann-Clare and Gary McGregor, who are the lucky winners of the Malvern News competition, drawn last week. The pair were delighted to receive a double pass to James Reid at the Darfield Hotel on May 21st.

Two Rivers Community Trust are organising two free Community Information Nights to inform and equip people around issues involving depression, stress, suicide, youth issues and peer pressure.

Paul Cossey (Chair of Two Rivers Community Trust) commented, “we are extremely concerned for people in our district due to their isolation and ability to avoid or disguise their stress and depression. It takes family and friends who care and are confident to walk alongside, so people can seek help and find a way through dark times. That is what is behind these evenings. We want to talk about the issues and provide practical answers and support.”

The first evening entitled ‘How to help a friend’ will be led by Dawn Nolan and Alex Eveleigh from Specialist Mental Health Services (CDHB). They have a focus on rural communities and will provide information around signs and symptoms of depression, stress and suicide and other mental health matters.

The second evening entitled ‘How to help your teen’ will be led by Phil Baker from Attitude (Youth Education Division of the Parenting Place). Phil grew up in Darfield, and has worked with young people for eight years in both voluntary and professional capacities. Phil observed, “statistically, teenagers from around New Zealand are struggling with serious mental health issues, now more than ever.”

“He will give you key insights

into what your teenagers actually get up to, how their ‘world’ operates, and what you as a parent can do to be i nfo rm e d an d p r act ic al supporters of your kids during some of their most critical years,” Paul said. “Additionally, he may be able to provide answers to some of your deepest and darkest questions such as: What are my kids really up to on their fancy shmancy techno-doodles? Why do teenagers never think about the consequences? What is that smell coming from their bedroom?”

Literally anything in any order, perhaps staying away from capital le9ers, and as long as you like. No one is watching but you and, it’s a machine that answers and gives you the 3 million 800 thousand replies in .44 of a second!

Use Google as the sage, but you can be led astray. If you pull up something that looks good then the first thing you do is google that. It will give you the same volume of results and the first five or ten entries will confirm that you should stay away from it - or there is no problem and go right ahead.

Glentunnel School opened its gates to even smaller persons on Thursday, May 5th when the inaugural session of the Glentunnel Playgroup was held in the school library during the morning. It was much to the delight of local pre-schoolers and their accompanying parents.

The playgroup facilitator, Paula Warman, Warman commented that it was, “exciting to welcome seven families to the first session of the Glentunnel playgroup. The children enjoyed playing with a range of toys from the Darfield Toy Library and creating crayon art works based on an autumn leaf theme, or their own particular interests.”

Whilst the children were busy playing, creating and making new friends; the mothers present were able to give ideas about how they would like the group to run, and Paula looks forward to using these in the future, as the group evolves.

Last week Selwyn’s Southern Woods Nursery visited Darfield Primary School to establish a school orchard, planting six large fruit trees and three Feijoa bushes. When the trees are established they will provide a shady spot for the School’s children to rest, or do their

class work. It will also be a place where the children can freely pick fruit to eat and enjoy.

“I firmly believe there is something special about eating something that you have nurtured and picked,” said Darfield Primary School principal Aaron Richards. “The

new orchard would not have been possible if the school hadn’t been supported by local businesses such as Burger Revolution and Southern Woods Nursery, who sponsored the trees that were planted.”

The annual Duck Shooting Competition organised by Darfield Hotel continues to be popular, with many teams now ‘regular’ competitors.

The Hotel’s publicans, Ray and Debbie O’Connell, sponsored a great line up of prizes which were presented at the nowtraditional opening weekend Sunday prize giving.

Last Friday, May 6th, sixty teams took part in the annual Canterbury Rugby Fun Day. Pupils from a number of local schools participated and there were one or two Crusaders players on hand to assist.

The event took place at Burnside Park, Christchurch and was proclaimed by all to be a fantastic day, with the students thoroughly enjoying themselves.

“The children had a great time and scored some wonderful tries,” commented Jamie Ruwhiu, Assistant Principal/ Sport Director, Kirwee Model School.

This year our Club feature comes to you at the start of the year so we can let you know what the Club is up to and how things are going.

It is pleasing to see Grant McIlroy and Graeme Bell back to take control of the Div 1 side again; the boys are all excited about the season ahead and have certainly kicked it off very well.

The Div 2 boys are holding their own and are looking to make the top eight, and our Colts are having a great start to the year and are certainly looking towards their most successful campaign for a few years now, (easily in the top four).

We have seen a huge increase in supporters and players joining us upstairs every Saturday a=er the games are played, it reminds me a lot of the very strong era the Club enjoyed in the mid 2000’s and it’s great to see. Long may it con nue!!

One of our focusses this year is on our Sponsors of the Club; Barry Harvey is doing an excellent job of running this for us, a special thanks to him and especially all the sponsors who are suppor ng us.

We are looking at op ons for expanding the Clubrooms and u lising the viewing deck a bit more, whether that’s some sort of cover and heaters, or if possibly we extend the Clubrooms over some of the viewing deck. The decision will depend on the fund raising we can get done, and grants we receive. The costs are only just being put together, so we are unsure which way we will head, but this is part of our five year plan which we are just star ng to inves gate now.

This year’s annual fishing compe on is on the 14th, 15th and 16th October and marks the 10th year the compe on has been running. It will again be held at the pres gious Haldon Arm camping ground site of Lake Benmore and we have a few surprises organised to mark the milestone.

The Darfield Division 1 side are looking to make 2016 a great one! The team have new coaches (…..well, not so new) in Graeme Bell and Grant McIlroy, assisted by the wealth of experience of Pete McAndrew. Hal\ack Harry Pankhurst and Loose Forward centurion Blair Mcllroy are co-captaining the side this year, and coming off a couple of great wins, including bea ng sec on leaders, Ashley, they are doing a great job.

With some of their talent from last season now travelling around the UK, we’ve filled the void with new recruits Alex Parker (travelling from the UK himself) and James Murphy, and the return of a familiar face in Sam Groundwater.

The team would like to thank their great sponsors for all of their support, and in par cular Darfield ITM, WA Boyes, Grenfell Builders, and Darfield Hotel.

The team started the season with a hiss and a roar with a big spirited win over rivals Kirwee. Despite a close loss to a good young Banks Peninsula side last week, the team remains confident they can make a push for the top four. Strong performances from Wes Butler, Hugh Ridgen, Callum Janmaat, and the team’s 'hard man' captain Tim Draper have been evident early on. There is a good mix of both new and old faces forming a solid squad of players. The team is ably player coached by Kris Rodgers and Stu Clough, helped

by Managers Pete Thomas and Bodie Hawkins.

The Darfield Colts are into their third year together as a team. After a disappointing first year and narrowly missing out on a semi-finals last year the team has set a goal of making the top four this year and from there any result is possible. Eighteen of the squad are back from last season and with the addition of six new players to the team the squad is looking fairly solid. Barry Harvey and Chris Lea are the coaches along with David Beatty as team manager, Mark Beattie as fitness trainer and a new addition to the management team this year of Shannon Wylie as Video Analyst. The Team this year is captained by Tom Heslop with Jared Kars as his deputy.

The Malvern under 18's Team is led this year by two locals Ben Millar and Morgan Heselwood.

The majority of the squad come from a successful two years playing Malvern 16’s who currently have one win from three.

The transition to playing older and more experienced players will test our team throughout the season. We have huge potential amongst the squad and look to improve every week.

I have confidence the future rugby stocks of our community will be healthy for years to come.

The 2016 rugby season has seen an enthusiastic and talented bunch of lads turn out with the usual swagger accustomed to boys of this age, but still in good form. New faces this year have helped bring added strength to the side.

We train twice a week and have a real good team culture going, each player has respect and support from fellow players. The boys are willing to learn and have found out there are no soft options in this grade and so take on board what's been asked of them. Definitely a team to keep an eye on as the season progresses. Coached by Don Kars and Scott Carnachon and managed by Lee Longdin, this team are training hard and setting out as they mean to go on with two wins from three games. The team is in a Combined Mid Canterbury/Ellesmere/North Canterbury competition travelling as far as Mayfield in the south and Culverden in the north.

The Darfield U14½ team for 2016 is a bunch of enthusiastic young men keen to learn and play hard each week. We have a few players new to the game and have been impressed by everyone’s team spirit and commitment. We went quickly from one training a week to two trainings with some of the lads also doing fitness to get game ready. Although the boys haven’t had a win yet the coaching staff think they aren't far off as all the players are showing improvement each game. The team is coached by Tim McNae and Matt Talbot, managed by Bronwen Seaward. We are all looking forward to the season ahead. Malvern U11½ team is a group of 26 enthusias c boys from all four contribu ng Malvern clubs, with many of them moving up a grade this year. They are being coached by Doug Mitchell and Bryan (Trout) Thomas with Karen Ridgen as the very efficient manager.

The team has had a strong start to the season a=er drawing the bye in the first round.

Many of the team par cipated at the “Tiny Hill” coaching clinic, held in the recent school holidays, involving 190 kids (9-13 years) from all Ellesmere Clubs. The purpose of these clinics was to allow players to develop their skills, enjoyment and understanding of the game. The Canterbury RFC have been running these “Tiny Hill” coaching clinics for forty years. This was a great opportunity for those a9ending to learn new skills and techniques. We are looking forward to a successful season and appreciate the support we have each week from our parents on the sidelines.

What a wonderful start to the season with the weather we have had so far. The majority of the Darfield U10 team this year are new players from last season’s U8½ grade; along with some that have never played, or were in other Clubs last season. Prac ce sessions for these young lads helps and encourages their poten al as a team, and assesses, helps with and encourages, the correct form of play in a game, which can be a challenge in itself. Darfield U10 put all their energy into prac se and game day and make sure Coach Pete Kelly, Assistant Coach Troy Allen and Manager Sonja George are kept on their toes!!

Darfield U8½ (Red) This season we have a team of ten; three of which are commencing their second season of tackle and seven nervous, but eager newbies gradua ng from ripper. Each week our rookies demonstrate their improving understanding and knowledge of the game as they ‘brave up’ and go in for those all-important tackles and runs. The more experienced in our team not only show us the skills and techniques they have already mastered to play rugby, they also help by teaching their younger peers, who follow and admire their every move.

Training evenings are valuable mes to learn from our Coach (Dick Moore) and CoCoach (Timmy McNae) and while the focus is obviously on learning to play the game to the best of your ability, it is also a me for understanding rules, gaining respect for each other and forming mutual friendships. Support from family/whanau, friends and the local community is an important aspect that empowers our young rugby players to achieve their best, but please remember - keep it POSITIVE and make it FUN! This year I have the privilege of coaching one of Darfield RFC’s three ripper teams. Alongside Joseph Wineera (Coach) and our Manager, Nicky ArnoQ, we have had a great start to the season. This is my third year with Ripper Rugby and it is good to see some players that also started three years ago grow and develop skills and enthusiasm for the game. This year we are made up of ten very keen players aged between 4 and 7 years of age (including two girls). West Melton Primary School have begun their new term with its annual school cross-country, held around the Preston Downs sub-division.

The weather on Tuesday, May 3rd was fabulous, and competitors produced some great times.

A successful partnership between community, health and commercial organisations has helped save Canterbury DHB nearly $1m, by providing insulation and/or heating to high health needs patients.

In 2011, a Healthy Homes programme was created between the Canterbury DHB and three Canterbury Primary Health Care Organisations. The Programme was developed to keep people in their own homes and communities rather than using hospital services.

The programme initially focussed on people who had been in Christchurch Hospital at least twice within a year prior to the programme starting (defined as being the highestneeds patients). In July 2013, the programme was extended to include general practice patients, e.g. families with children under seventeen years of age identified as being at risk and parents with newborn babies.

The programme ran from 2011 to late 2014 and the whole programme provided over 1,500 insulation installations and 450 heating appliances.

Around half of the $1.7m invested went towards intervention costs for the 900 highest-needs patients, as previously defined. Of those 900 highest-need patients, a significant number of them were aged over 65. There was an approximately 60%/40% split between home owners and tenants.

After reviewing the health data, comparing the year prior to the interventions with the year following, the findings showed a 29.2% reduction in hospital bed days of those 900 patients. This equates to a reduction of five bed days per annum, a cost

To date, EECA has provided approximately $450m worth of subsidies for insulation nationwide through their programmes, including Warm Up New Zealand. The Healthy Home Programme analysis shows the need to continue with programmes such as these, particularly when EECA and CEA through their own surveys, have identified that there are still over 30,000 low income family homes in Canterbury alone, with inadequate or no insulation.

initiative. “I had insulation installed through them some years ago and recently they called to recheck it. Finding it too thin for current standards they upgraded it. The house was immediately warmer and it’s made a huge difference,” Denise added CEA employs approximately forty staff and was established in 1994. It was the first energy NGO focusing on practical help for householders in New Zealand. The organisation also runs a Curtain Bank which recycles good quality used curtains and provides an independent energy advice service.

Selwyn residents are being invited to take part in a survey to help identify Eastern Selwyn’s current and future community space needs.

Selwyn has been growing rapidly over the past decade, and much of the district’s population growth has occurred in Eastern Selwyn.

As a result of the area’s population growth, the Council identified the need to gather information on how community spaces in Eastern Selwyn meet people’s current needs, and what might be required to meet their needs in the future.

“The survey will be used to help develop a Community Spaces Plan for Eastern Selwyn which is expected to be released for consultation this spring,” said Mark Rykers, Rykers the Council’s Manager Open Space and Property.

“The survey asks people how they currently use community spaces in Eastern Selwyn and what activities they would like to do locally but don’t currently.”

Community spaces are areas available for community use and include libraries, community centres, halls, meeting rooms, parks and reserves, church grounds, and can include

commercial spaces such as cafes and markets, if they are used for community activities. The area covered by the plan extends from Rolleston to West Melton in the north, Prebbleton and Lincoln to the east and Springston in the south. People living outside of Eastern Selwyn who use community spaces in Eastern Selwyn can also complete the survey.

The survey Is open until May 27th and can be completed online at www.selwyn.govt.nz/haveyoursay.

Everyone who completes the survey will go into the draw to win a $100 petrol voucher.

Residents also have the opportunity to share their thoughts about community spaces in person on: • May 13th - Selwyn Aquatic Centre (10:30am-12noon).

• May 14th - Lincoln Farmers Market (11am-12.30pm), • May 14th - Warehouse Rolleston (2(2-3.30pm).

Mark added that there has also been a significant increase in the number of new clubs and other organisations operating in Eastern Selwyn. The Council is also surveying community organisations and local facilities as part of the project.
