Organised as a fundraiser for Darfield Colts Rugby team, it was a comedy and hypnotist show that will definitely not be forgotten in a hurry. Entertainer, Guy Cater was able to manage the evening superbly, introduced plenty of variety and had the crowd in stitches throughout.

Lucia O’Sullivan is just seven years old, but her drive and determination has seen her raise over $3,000 towards melanoma treatment for her Mum’s cousin, local man, Scott Mayberry. Scott was diagnosed in September last year with stage four (one/ localised - four/indicates distant spread), metastatic melanoma; the only treatment option to show any effect was Pembrolizumab, more commonly known as Keytruda.

However in New Zealand Pharmac has yet to agree to fund the drug, even though many other countries have done so.

“A Give a Little page set up by Scott’s sister Nicole has raised over $30,000 and all through the fantastic generosity of this w onde r ful c om m uni t y ,” commented Scott’s mother-inlaw Ginny Nelson.

Nelson “People have been amazing from both far and wide.”

When Jayde, Jayde Scott’s wife, discussed their plight with her cousin, her cousin’s young daughter Lucia decided to think of ways she too could help. Lucia came up with a plan to cut off her very long hair and with the wider Fairlie (where she lives) community behind her, the resourceful seven year old has raised over $3,000.

“Scott meanwhile is doing very well with Keytruda, and his last sc a ns sho w e d a bi g improvement,” Ginny finished.

Selwyn’s Deputy Mayor Sarah W a lt e rs anno unc ed h er intention, this week, to stand for the Selwyn Mayoralty at the Local Government Elections in October.

Sarah who has been elected to Council for the past nine years, and been Deputy Mayor for the past six, commented that she has the experience, and a great understanding of what is required for the role.

“As a Councillor since 2007 and Deputy Mayor since 2010, I

have a good understanding of the role. I love being involved in local government and would like to see more people recognising the impact of local government on their everyday lives and how we can work together to enrich that impact.”

As Mayor, Sarah wants to see greater collaboration with all stakeholders in Selwyn.

“Selwyn is no longer a collection of small towns. We need to work together to ensure we don’t lose the things that are

important to us and that our fast growth enhances our district and the lives of those who live here.”

One of the issues Sarah has identified is providing for the area’s changing population, particularly the availability and accessibility of services.

“Unlike many other areas, the focus is not just on an increasing aged population, but also recognising that 22% of our population are under fifteen, greater than the New Zealand

average. We are also more culturally diverse than ever before.”

Other issues Sarah has noted include water quality and availability, providing safe and effective transport options, counc i l and c om mu n ity connectivity and the increasing impact of legislation on local government operations.

The longest lived organisation in New Zealand’s musical history is coming to Darfield this autumn. The boys of Christchurch Cathedral’s Choir of Men and Boys will perform at Trinity Church, on Saturday, May 21st.

The performance will include a brief choral evensong, one of the regular services that the boy choristers perform in the Cathedral, as well as a recital of music from their extensive repertoire. This will be the first opportunity for Malvern residents to hear the choir in this locale since a performance in Hororata several years ago.

The eighteen choir boys range in age from eight to thirteen years. During school terms they attend ten rehearsals and sing

six services each week in addition to being in demand for civic functions, concerts, and recitals.

Today, the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys is the only choir of its kind in New Zealand and all boy choristers receive scholarships to attend Cathedral Grammar School.

The choir and choir school were founded six months in advance of ChristChurch Cathedral’s consecration on November 1st, 1881, as a choir based on the English cathedral tradition was deemed essential for a Cathedral consecration service.

Following the devastating earthquake of February 2011, the Cathedral Choir continued a reduced schedule at Christ’s College Chapel, and performed regularly throughout Canterbury. In August 2013 the Transitional Cathedral (named the ‘Cardboard Cathedral’ because of the striking cardboard tubes in its structure) was opened and the boy choristers resumed the full schedule of Cathedral worship there.

The choir has toured successfully in the United States and the United Kingdom (2008), singing at many of the great Cathedrals, including a week as choir-in-residence at Westminster Abbey; and in Australia (2013), performing in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, and Goulburn. Several excellent recordings of their music are also available on CD. In 2015 John Linker was

appointed Director of Music at ChristChurch Cathedral in Christchurch and he leads the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys. The inclusion of a sung Evensong service in the recital is a reminder of their daily duty; praying on behalf of the city of Christchurch, the nation, and the world. The performance in Darfield fits John’s goal to increase awareness of the Cathedral Choir programme locally (as well as nationally and internationally).

A native of Princeton, Illinois, USA, John holds B.Mus. and M.Mus. degrees, and is currently studying for a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Cincinnati. From 2001-2015 he served as Organist/Choirmaster of the Church of the Good Shepherd (Episcopal) in Lexington, Kentucky (USA). The choir programme there expanded and strengthened during his leadership, making three tours to the UK and one to continental Europe, as well as touring throughout the United States.

In addition to his r e s p o n s i b i li ti e s a t th e Transitional Cathedral, John is active as a recitalist, chamber musician, organ tutor, and accompanist. He is a member of the Association of Anglican Musicians, the American Guild of Organists, and the Organ Historical Society.

Ne w Zea la nd' s re sc ue helicopters rely on donations from everyday people. So this Chopper Appeal, Westpac want to give folk a spot on the side of a rescue helicopter to recognise their support.

What is a facial peel?

On May 3rd, 110 students from Darfield High School graduated fro m t h e R o ad S af ety Educations RYDA programme.

The programme held at the Darfield Rugby Clubrooms is an essential learning experience for senior high school students that aims to change the way young people think and act on the road - not only as drivers, but also as passengers - and make better decisions.

"Older drivers will always have advantage over youth on our roads. Youth have more challenges; their brains are still developing, they exhibit sensation-seeking behaviour, they are greatly influenced by peer pressure, they often drive less road-worthy cars, can be sleepy, and often drive at night or for 'fun'. They also don’t have the experience that older drivers have. It's up to us as a community to bridge that gap of inexperience and underdevelopment with as many tools as we can, for better planning and decision making. That's what the RYDA programme is all about,” commented Maria Lovelock, Road Safety Educations NZ Programme Manager.

To date 36,000 students have graduated from the RYDA programme across N ew Zealand since its introduction in 2007.

Students are asked to make a minimal contribution to the programme largely funded by big business, along with community partner, Rotary.

The road toll has increased for the last two consecutive years.

They were also shown features of the vehicle and their functions which are critical to road safety.

24% of the 321 road fatalities, yet they only represent 15% of the population overall. Similarly young people dying on New Zealand roads is almost double the rate of the whole population. They are most at risk of crashing during the six months after graduating from their learners licence.

On average, each week, a family suffers the tragedy of losing a young family member and every day there’s a life changing - and often a life ruining, injury.

The Ministry of Transport's annual Social Cost of Road Crashes and Injuries report, released in March this year, estimated the total cost of fatal and injury crashes in 2014 was $3.47 billion (a 5.8 per cent increase from 2013).

The estimated social cost of each fatality was $4.09 million, dropping to $430,000 for each

serious injury, and $23,000 for each minor injury. The estimated cost includes a component representing the estimated value of pain and suffering to the injured and their family. Reduced productivity, medical and other resource costs are also included.

"The loss of a single young life is one too many and the impact these crashes have on friends, families and communities is a national tragedy," said Terry Birss CEO of Road Safety Education.

Over the past decade, the road toll in the 15 to 24 year old demographic has dropped nationwide by 52%. "This is due to many factors including the graduated licensing scheme, safer cars, better roads and, importantly the key role of education," Marie finished.

The Council met on Wednesday, April 27th and made the following key decisions: Draft area plans adopted for consultation: Consultation on Draft Area Plans for Ellesmere and Malvern will open in early May. The Draft Area Plans have been developed after initial consultation with townships and communities in Ellesmere and Malvern over how townships might grow and develop over the next fifteen years. The plans aim to identify land use and settlement patterns, along with the supporting infrastructure that will be needed as the area grows. Consultation, which will include drop-in sessions in a number of townships, will be open until mid-June.

Reviewed bylaws released for consultation: Following a review of the Council’s Trade Waste Bylaw and Wastewater Drainage Bylaw, new draft bylaws will be released for consultation next month. The Trade Waste Bylaw aims to control trade waste discharges into the wastewater system in order to protect Council infrastructure and the wider community, and facilitate compliance with discharge permits for wastewater treatment plants. The proposed Wastewater Drainage Bylaw aims to ensure that wastewater drainage is managed in a way that is appropriate for both the community and the wider environment.

Safety measures planned at water intake: The Council will install additional signage and closed circuit television monitoring at the Paparua Water Intake, near Kirwee, in an effort to deter people from swimming at the site. The intake was the site of a drowning in 2012, prompting a warning in the coroner’s finding last year about the dangers of swimming near man-made irrigation structures.

Although the coroner made no recommendations to the Council, a review of the site has been undertaken and a range of safety measures are being investigated. As a first step, several additional signs will be installed warning against swimming, and CCTV will be installed once a permanent power supply is available. Other measures to be considered include additional fencing, physical barriers in the river, and other structural measures to prevent access, along with increased education and enforcement.

Trust donation to Dunsandel project: The Council approved a proposal for the Selwyn District Charitable Trust to make a grant payment of $10,000 towards the construction of the Dunsandel Community Centre.

Yuck, even for a professional these guys can make the hair stand up on the back of your neck.

There are several na ve wasps in New Zealand which cause very li8le problem. Our concern is the German wasp and the common wasp, both of which look very similar. The worst is the German wasp, which was accidentally introduced in the 1940’s. Their nests are usually about the size of a soccer ball, but the biggest recorded in New Zealand was 3.7 metres high by 1.75 metres across; this was in the Auckland area. They have no predators in our country so have become prolific. These wasps are destroying na ve birds and insects in the beech forests by drinking the honey dew (found on beech trees) that our na ve species rely on for survival. In New Zealand’s na ve beech forests, it’s not unusual for there to be 10,000 wasps opera ng per square hectare.

The worker wasps’ job is to take food back to the nest to feed the grubs and the queen. This can be honey dew, insects they kill, meat from road kill, and also fruit and fish. The Heritage of Hororata and Beyond project has been selected as one of six finalist in two categories for the 2016 Canterbury Heritage Awards: the Visitors Guide to the Heritage of Hororata and Beyond in the Heritage Tourism category and the Heritage Open Weekend as a finalist in the Outstanding Contribution to Heritage.

“This project has been a collaborative effort between the Hororata Community Trust and local heritage property owners, mu se um gu ar di a ns and enthusiasts, so it is fantastic to see the community’s hard work recognised in these prestigious awards,” commented Hororata Community Trust Projects Manager, Cindy Driscoll.

Driscoll The Visitors Guide to the Heritage of Hororata and Beyond was produced to describe the history of the settlements in the district, tell its significant historical stories and promote heritage places to visit, in one attractive document. In order to access a wider catchment and provide greater access to historic information from the district the information was also made available on the hororata.org.nz website.

The Visitors Guide publication was about promoting the region’s history to a wide audience.

The ‘Heritage Open Weekend’ encouraged people to the district to experience its history, first hand and over 400 visitors started their heritage journey at the Hororata Domain where they purchased tickets. They then spent the day exploring their choice of nine properties throughout the district including Gunyah Country Estate, Terrace Station, Homebush Stables, Cotons Cottage and Museum, Washpen Falls, Glentunnel Museum, Steventon, Rockwood Station, The Point Station and St John’s Church.

“Once you would have seen the wrecks of burnt out cars - it was nothing more than a dumping ground for rubbish,” Elizabeth said. “The last decade has seen a transition to a valued park space with beautifully laid out trails for horse riders and carriage drivers, along with picnic areas; everything you need for a public recreation area.”

The forest also hosts a significant biodiversity area known as the Kowhai Savannah.

“With the cultivation of soils and introduction of hardy exotic trees, these remnant patches of Canterbury Dryland are now a rare sight. They are taonga to be treasured and preserved for our children, and our children’s children,” Elizabeth said.

Courtney Thompson, one of the key park rangers working on this project had a special

interest in the forest as she herself is an avid horse rider.

“My favourite part of this has been being involved in such a positive project with so much support from the public. It's really rewarding to be able to deliver something that so many people want,” Courtney said.

Elizabeth also paid tribute to Selwyn District Council Deputy Mayor Sarah Walters for Selwyn’s contribution to the project and to Fulton Hogan for the resources they provided to make the park a reality.

Local libraries are hosting a series of free computer training sessions from May until July and are also celebrating New Zealand Music Month by organising a performance in Darfield.

Free Stepping UP computer training sessions will cover basic computing skills and programmes including Microsoft Word, email, Google and internet searching and using Facebook.

Sessions start from today, Friday, May 6th, at Darfield Library and Friday, May 13th, at Leeston Library, then run fortnightly on Fridays from 10am-12pm.

The sessions are provided by the 2020 Trust, a registered charity, which partners with public libraries in New Zealand to offer introductory computer training. Currently 35 library networks deliver services with the 2020 Trust.

• It’s important to acknowledge that parenting a new-born can be really hard.

• Well supported families are less likely to struggle during times of stress.

• New parents don’t need another source of advice.

• A community needs to look after each other.

• Food brings people together.

Bellyful’s main criteria is simply that the families which they provide practical support to, do not have others available to cook and deliver free meals. The family must also fall into one of these categories: • Have a new baby (generally under three months old - but this is not set in stone).
