The Darfield Anzac service was led by Baptist pastor Paul Cossey and attracted a large attendance. The names of those from the area who were killed in both World Wars were read out, with many surnames still resident in the district. designing her own brand of thigh-high boots two years ago after she suffered much frustration trying to find some stylish, casual thigh-highs that also had a suitable fit. “Bozzy was perfected over the space of a few years after looking and searching for the perfect pair of boots. I wanted to wear a pair of thigh-highs in everyday life that made me feel chic! Thigh-highs that I could wear running my young kids to school, as well as wearing when I went out! The ones I did find I couldn't afford, and the ones I could, were either rubbish quality or the fit was shocking,” explained Dee. “Bozzy is about feeling amazing, but feeling comfortable!” Since the initial idea for the company, Bozzy Bootz has taken nearly two years to get off the ground due to Dee’s perfectionist requirements for the production of her stock. After much searching for a competent supplier, and rejecting a few along the way, Dee is now confident that she has the perfect patterns,
flawless quality and the right branding for her product. The name of the company, Bozzy Bootz, is more than just clever branding, it’s a name created by Dee’s own sister Sam. Sam has always laughingly referred to her niece (Dee’s daughter) as ’Little Bozzy’ because she was such a Miss bossy boots! Christchurch’s Chrystal Chenery, Chenery one of New Zealand's first bachelorette's in the television series New Zealand Bachelor, as well as being Dancing with the Stars runner up, has joined the Bozzy Boots team as the Brand Ambassador. The month of April celebrates one year since the inception of Darfield’s Polkadot.com. The modernised and very chic preowned/vintage store, situated on South Terrace, is managed by its dedicated owner, Kerri Booth. “It is amazing to have reached one year of business already. I have been humbled by the support of the Darfield Community and how much they have got behind what I am doing,” Kerri said with a beaming smile. Kerri’s infatuation with showing people how to be creative with second-hand items can be seen throughout the uber trendy shop, as well as in her famous window displays. “Second hand does not mean of a lesser quality and it is exciting to see other people catching on to that idea through my creations. Sunday, May 8th, is Mother’s Day! Mother's Day is a celebration honouring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in March, April or May. Mother's Day is an American creation and while it is not directly descended from the many celebrations of mothers and motherhood that have occurred throughout the world over thousands of years, such as the Greek cult to Cybele, the Roman festival of Hilaria, or the Christian Mothering Sunday celebration, in some countries it has become synonymous with these older traditions. The idea of an official celebration for Mothers day in the United States was first suggested by Julia Ward Howe in 1872. An activist, writer and poet, Julia shot to fame with her famous Civil War song, ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic’. Julia Ward Howe suggested that in the US, June 2nd be annually celebrated as Mother’s Day and should be dedicated to peace. She wrote a passionate appeal to women and urged them to rise against war in her famous Mothers Day Proclamation, written in Boston in 1870. Millions of people across the globe take the day as an opportunity to honour their mothers, thank them for their efforts in giving them life, raising them and being their constant support and well wisher. Of course, the aspirations and values of mothers have also changed since the date of the earliest Mother’s Day celebrations, but the wish to teach children the difference between right and wrong remains at the centre of many mother’s ambitions. Many mother’s in America believed this to be the strongest indication of a good mother and that when their children demonstrated mastery of this lesson, the most likely treat to be provided by one out of four of these mums, was more time spent together. Many countries have adopted the version of Mother’s Day that America initiated, but as early as 1920, just six years after the U.S. Congress granted the holiday official status, there was opposition to its wrongful interpretation, holiday status, ever increasing commercialism. and the neglect of its rightful roots in pacifist and humanitarian wartime efforts. In New Zealand most people use the day as an opportunity to pay tribute to their mothers and thank them for all their love and support.
The New Zealand Music Managers Forum, in association with NZ Music Commission, have just announced the finalists for the 2016 Music Managers Awards. One of the finalists is local singer/songwriter/musician Mel Parsons. Mel has recently been busy performing with ‘Sons of a Bitch’ in the district, on an immensely successful and virtually soldout, woolshed tour and for the past year has been touring to promote her current album ‘Drylands’. Her promotional endeavours and raw talent have been recognised by the MMF who have named Mel as a finalist in three categories: Breakthrough Manager of The Year, Self-Managed Artist of The Year and Best Independent Tour 2016. Within the music industry, appointing a manager is one of the most important career decisions an artist will make. With the changing landscape of the music industry, music managers have never played a more important role than today.
Mel Parsons is a finalist in three categories of the Music Managers Awards 2016. As well as shaping the career of the artist, and running their day -to-day business affairs, a music manager is now responsible for building and managing a range of activities, from crowd funding through to marketing. However, Mel shunned the opportunity to be managed by another and decided to shape her own career, doing so very successfully, and inspiring many of her peers in the process. The MMF awards have become one of this country’s most respected music industry
events, with attendance from managers, industry professionals and artists. Members of the MMF join a community with some of the countries leading music managers who look after artists such as Sol3 Mio, The Naked and Famous, Dave Dobbyn, Brooke Fraser, Tomorrow People, Devilskin, Tiki Taane, Taane and many more. The MMF Music Managers Awards will be held at The Tuning Fork in Auckland on Wednesday, May 11th.

Claire and Richard Washington are delighted to be the new owner/operators of Swimsense (formerly Small Stokes) Swim School based in Weedons. The Washington family had been thinking about moving into the Selwyn area for some time, when the opportunity of a lifetime arose with the chance to purchase the Weedons swim school. “The timing was spot on, like it was meant to be. A swim school had always been a particular dream of Claire’s with her swimming and education background. It’s perfect,” enthused Richard. In fact, Claire and Richard both have complementary teaching backgrounds to the business with Richard a qualified Physical Education (P.E) teacher and Assistant Principal at a Christchurch High School, and Claire also a qualified P.E teacher, health teacher and counsellor. “We both value the importance
of learning to swim as a vital physical skill, but also the more recent research on the effect of brain development shows the rewards are far-reaching. Learning to swim utilises many parts of the sensory brain such as touch, sound, sight, smell and taste. For example, one particular benefit for babies is the development of the respiratory system which, can in turn help to develop language,” Claire explained. A lot of research has gone into the couple’s new venture and their already vast experience in this area of teaching is clearly evident. Claire has previously been a swimming teacher in Christchurch and Hong Kong, as well as being a competitive swimmer herself for several years, which included competing in an Ironman long distance swimming event. It is because of this wealth of knowledge and experience that the School can confidently offer a specified, individual approach
to learning how to swim and offer private lessons (1-2 max swimmers/teacher) for schoolaged children and adults. Swimsense also offer a comprehensive pre-school programme and have begun to develop this further with more classes being added as required. Parents can enjoy the flexibility of having siblings share lessons, while attending a swim school which caters to all ages and abilities in one place. “The Swim School had been running for fifteen years prior to our ownership. We aim to build on, and enhance, the outstanding reputation of quality swim lessons, in a small, familyfriendly environment. There was a pleasing number of entries for the Hororata School’s Pig and Possum weighin held on Sunday, April 24th. With approximately 150 entries this year, the competition was tough but the rewards were certainly worth the effort, thanks to many sponsors backing the event. All funds raised go directly back to the Hororata Primary School PTA and are used to fund a variety of activities. These include school camps, library books, sports equipment etc. The paintball ‘Shoot the Turkey’ brought forth much hilarity as ‘turkeys’ were bespattered by young and old alike! The great weather, PTA and bar stalls all added to a great community day out - while raising appreciated funds for Hororata Primary School. At Darfield Preschool and Nursery the tamariki have been exploring ANZAC day and the significance and meaning of why it’s celebrated here in New Zealand. Using different art methods (i.e. paint, felt, paper) they made poppies and learned the reason they represent ANZAC day. The children and their teachers have read stories together about the ANZAC soldiers and had discussions on how brave they were to fight for their country to be free. To end their ANZAC celebrations everyone worked together to bake some delicious ANZAC biscuits to share for afternoon tea. Many tamariki attended the local ANZAC parade with their parents and placed the poppies they had made on the memorial in remembrance.

Last Sunday, at Darfield’s Trinity Church Matt Maude was hard at work adorning the windows with Anzac poppies in time for the service to be held on April 25th. Matt was ably assisted by four young children who came out to paint on Sunday afternoon.

Almost 250 Sheffield citizens turned out on a fine Anzac morning to attend the annual service at the township’s war memorial. Officiating at the service was Rev Susan Baldwin, while Jimmy Reimer (whose grandfather Bill Woods lives at Springfield) travelled out from Christchurch to provide the playing of the Last Post for the flag lowering and Rouse for the raising of both the New Zealand and Australian flags.

April 11th saw an exciting day in a Christchurch recording studio for a group of gifted Darfield Primary School students. The students were given the opportunity to bring their self-written radio play, Coal Mine Gold to auditory life using the facilities on offer at the Plains FM studio on Madras Street. Stephanie Frewan from the New Zealand School of Young Writers visited Darfield Primary School at the end of term 2 to work with the group of proficient writers. During the visit, the group were set the challenge of writing a radio play that would be produced and broadcast on radio. After two days of collaboration the team had completed a piece of Writing entitled Coal Mine Gold. The play is an adventure story that includes a group of mystery solving students and their sinister teacher. “This was an awesome experience for the children. They had the chance to use the sound booths and experience first-hand the production processes at Plains FM,” enthused Darfield Primary School Principal, Aaron Richards. The radio production will be publicly broadcast on Plains Fm on Wednesday, May 4th at 11am, and repeated on Sunday, May 8th at 6pm.

On Friday, April 8th, West Melton School’s Student Executive organised a Funky Wacky Day with all of the proceeds donated to the Aorangi Foundation. The Foundation was set up in 2009 to give students from low decile schools an opportunity to attend Living Springs Camp. For 2016 the Aorangi Foundation has a commitment to assist up to three classes, from four decile 1 schools, attend the Camp. West Melton students managed to raise over $500 for this worthy cause.

The St John National Youth Festival was held in Auckland last weekend (April 23rd 26th). T he competition component of the weekend is well-known to be the major event of the year for St John Youth in New Zealand. As well as the competitions, this year’s festival had a theme of ‘International Understanding’ with twenty cultural groups presenting to the attending youth squads. Although a f e s t iv a l b y n a m e, t h e participants have a strong focus on the competitions day, held on the Sunday, with most training all year for this event. Ella McClure (Leeston) and Kathryn Barnhill (Darfield) were no exception, and the keen contenders were part of one of the four teams from the South Island. Using their skill and experience, the girls’ team managed to take out a first in the Team Test 2 Trauma and a first in Aggregate team - First Aid Tests. While competing as a pair they scored another first in Teams Pairs 1 and 2. The four South Island Teams competed against teams from Northern and Central areas (four teams from each area, making a total of sixteen teams). Kathryn’s South Island team’s results are: • 1st in Team Test 2 Trauma • 1st in Aggregate Team - First Aid Tests • 1st (Kathryn and Ella) in team pairs 1 & 2 • 2nd (Kathryn) Champion Team Leader. The teams are tested both as teams and individuals in first aid, healthcare, leadership, communications, and drill (marching). Accident and Emergency scenes are staged as realistically as possible so that competitors react in a way that mirrors how they would respond in actual accidents and medical emergencies. Kathryn and Ella’s team placed runner up overall and received the prestigious Linen Guild Cup in recognition of this. The champion region for the c o m p e t it i o n w a s S o u t h Island. This is the fourth year that the South Island have won this competition and received the Sir Alfred Robin Memorial trophy again.

Nominations are now open for the Sensational Selwyn Awards 2016. The awards, organised by Selwyn District Council, are held every two years. They recognise and honour outstanding Selwyn individuals, community groups and businesses, for their inspirational work and achievements. Nominations can be made in nine categories: Agri-business; Arts and Culture; Community Services; Environmental; Large Business; Small Business; Sport; Tourism; Young Achiever. In 2014, 61 nominations were received for the Sensational Selwyn Awards. The award winners that year were: South Island Agricultural Field Days, Adrienne Begg, Quickenberry Guesthouse, Eliza Grigg, Josh Bashford, Bashford Southern Woods Tree Nursery, Fonterra Darfield, Rosa Flanagan and Phil Garrett and family.

Our speaker for this month was Pete Cartlidge former gardener at the National Trust in the UK. Due to holidays and illness we had a small group gathered and those not attending missed a really good talk. Pete was extremely easy to listen to and told us the history of the National Trust and the part he played whilst working in the UK. The Trust takes on the responsibility of many large stately houses and gardens and runs and maintains these properties. The upkeep of such buildings is huge and the Trust has an army of willing volunteers to take on this work. The houses and gardens are open to the public to appreciate. Pete also told us of his work as a gardener and how he was able to enjoy his passion for the land whilst doing his job. He really came across as a person who enjoyed and appreciated all that he did. Maybe he can come back another time and regale us with some more of his wonderful stories. The competition tables were well represented and we had some lovely blooms on show, as well as decorative entries. A little ‘did you know’. The crimson flowers blooming along the water races at the moment are Schizostylis coccinea Grandiflora. What a wonderful name to get your tongue around, to us lesser mortals they are Kaffir Lillies or River Lillies. They are a native of South Africa, I have added this as so many folk have enquired as to what these delightful flowers are. Keep appreciating the amazing colours that surround us at this time of year, something to remember in the dead of Winter. Happy days,

The new Malvern Netball Centre Junior Co-ordinator, Olivia Willocks has been extremely busy organising upcoming events for the Centre’s ANZfutureFERNS. The ANZfutureFERNS’ programme include children from Year 1-5, and a few older players that are just starting out, who will definitely be in for
a treat when they attend the Fun Day on Friday 29th April. “We are very excited to have a couple of the girls from the Canterbury Tactix coming to help us get up and running this year,” said Olivia excitedly. The aim of the day is to give Star Helpers and Coaches a chance to undertake their training, as well as introduce the children to
some skills and games. Things will begin with training courses for coaches earlier in the day before the Canterbury Tactix players and the junior players arrive at 3:30pm. “Its all about having fun, so lets make the most of having the Tactix girls out to help,” Olivia concluded.
Late last year, a group of wellknown, local sports enthusiasts converged to create a Board specifically focussed on Sport and Recreation in the community. The newly formed board has the primary goal of promoting local sports, as well as enhancing the number and quality of opportunities for sport and recreation in the district. They aim to build a positive sport culture for all. The Board’s first evening event is to be held on May 9th and parents, coaches, teachers and Club volunteers are invited to attend. Key guest speakers will be on -h and to i mp art information and advice on best practice for sport and recreation in 2016. The lectures will be then be followed by visiting, high level, athletes offering the audience an insight into their own sporting experiences, not only in their own communities, but also further afield. Local Clubs and interested attendees will be able to take valuable snippets of information from the
guest speakers and apply them to their own coaching environment; enhancing the sporting experience for their trainees.
