Darfield High School student, Tom Freeman achieved an incredible first placing in the U12 Boys category of the Open Water Swim at the 2016 Calder Stewart National Schools Triathlon Championships. The Open Water section was held on April 8th at Lake Hayes in Queenstown. Tom not only won the category, but did it convincingly with a time of 00:07:15. This was no mean feat in a cool water temperature of 15.4 degrees. The low temperatures and intense training have not deterred him though said his mother. “Tom is keen and looking forward to having another go in the North Island next year,” said proud mum, Annabel Freeman.

Freeman Whanganui is, for the first time, to have the privilege of hosting the annual ‘New Zealand Schools’ Triathlon Championships’ going ahead in March 2017 - thanks to a successful bid made by Sport Whanganui. Tom plans to participate again in the Open Water Swim section of the event.

Based in Ilam, Christchurch the Paint ‘n’ Sip Studio was opened

by Amanda Anthony in 2014.

Feeling a disconnection from her social life after the earthquakes Amanda made it her mission to empower people in a fun and creative way.

Paint. Sip. Party. Socialise - is the slogan and it certainly sums up an evening at the studio.

The News was invited to experience the Paint ‘n’ Sip concept and after the initial trepidation, excitement won over.

The Darfield group attending were surprised at the light, modern surroundings and enjoyed viewing the hung artworks without intimidation.

The group enjoyed a friendly welcome, and could partake of a drink on arrival, before donning an apron and taking a seat in front of their canvas.

The evening’s painting to be replicated was on the wall and for most - this is when reality kicked in.

While some of those attending (including some from the Darfield contingent) were

experienced artists, others were total novices.

The evening’s artist host set the ball rolling with basic, helpful instructions and information.

This included a pertinent directive not to confuse wine glass with painting water needless to say there was a painter or two imbibing blue or orange bubbly!

The instructions were clear and concise and even the most anxious of budding artists managed to produce a near masterpiece with aplomb.

It was an evening of sipping, painting, laughing and there was even singing at one point!

Van Morrison’s Brown eyed girl or Dexy’s Midnight Runners Come on Eileen were just a couple of the well-known tracks blas t e d ou t in be t w een instructions and enhancing the already convivial atmosphere.

The Paint ‘n’ Sip host and artist spent their spare moments offering tips, tricks, advice and anecdotes to the enthusiastic painters.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and I created

something that I would never have done of my own accord,” commented News staff member Nicki Rolleston.

Rolleston “I would have no idea how to start a project like this and found the idea of providing materials, instruction, wine and music - absolute

genius!”

“We’re all keen to go again - it would be wonderful experience with a child or a partner too,” Nicki commented.

My masterpiece is currently being prepared for hanging on my teenager’s wall. For many

years I had to endure her artwork all around the house, car, windows etc, so it’s only fair that I give her mine!”

It was standing room only at the Yello Shack cafe last Saturday night, as more than one hundred people came out to support Lu Wengler, Dawson Gilchrist and Pam Aldersley shave their heads to raise money for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer.

The evening was advertised to start at 7pm, however when the crowd started to arrive at 6.15 it was clear that this was no ordinary Saturday night in Springfield! After a few drinks and nibbles, the main event took place, with Lu and Dawson trying out some alternative hairstyles on their way to shavedom which kept the crowd amused. Pam opted for the band aid approach!

Following the shave, hairdresser Ange Wengler was kept busy with a steady stream of customers wanting less drastic hairstyles. The night was a funfilled family event which was supported by the whole community.

At the time of going to print, the team have raised over $6,500 with donations continuing to come in, far exceeding their target of $5,000.

Malvern Community Arts Council would like to remind everyone of the unique opportunity to be part of a charity auction at the Selwyn Gallery on Friday, April

immediate sale and unsold works will be auctioned with all proceeds being donated to UNICEF. The work is priced very well, with artwork at large and small sizes.

John Daysh, Bequest Manager at UNICEF, visited the Selwyn Gallery with Maurice and Doris Askew. Asked to comment he said, “there is no better cause than the children of the world”, and he encouraged the community to come out and see this amazing exhibition.

Now in his nineties, Maurice has led a brilliant career in the UK as a graphic artist for Granada TV, and here in New Zealand as senior lecturer at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts. Along with many superb commissions as a graphic designer and numerous awards, he has written several books, which include details of his experiences as a RAF flight engineer during WWII. “It is a rare opportunity to have Maurice exhibit at Selwyn Gallery again and an honour to host this generous auction,” commented Arts Co-ordinator, Ingrid Cole.

Usually a happy and bubbly person, well-adjusted and coping, Mary* had sunk into the clutches of depression as she struggled with the heavy workload of study and trying to juggle family life. Mary was doing a Master’s Degree in Fam ily Ps ychology an d Counselling at the time, when a friend at her course mentioned that there was an eight week Depression and Anxiety Recovery course just starting.

She discussed with her husband Adrian*, Adrian* an ENT surgeon and Epidemiologist, who suggested that she give the course a try to see if it would help. Mary readily signed up even though she was a week behind by then and lost no time in putting into practise the lifestyle treatments being advocated.

“You’ll get out of this, what you put into it”, was the catch phrase repeated every night by course Director Katie Snyder of Darfield. Mary certainly put her all into the programme! She didn’t just apply all the course requirements herself, she took them home to her husband and six year old daugh ter announcing to them that they would all be doing the course, along with her, at home. The family never stopped applying daily the right nutrition for the brain, exercise, listening to classical music, addressing their thought patterns and negative thinking and many other things she learned on the course.

Mary graduated the ’star’ of the class. One year later her husband Adrian wittily declared “We have all become annoyingly happy”, as he spoke to the next Depr ession Recover y participants at their graduation.

Kerry Gosset and Katie Snyder at Dr Neil Nedley’s ten day Intensive Residential Depression and Anxiety course in the US. That particular class had an average 75% reduction in depression overall. (A test marker is taken at the beginning and end to determine levels of depression and anxiety and EQ [a measure of health status]).

Dr Neil Nedley MD, author of ‘Depression the Way Out, Proof Positive’ and the ‘Lost Art of Thinking’, is an internal medicine physician in the US. Every second patient of his was asking for medication for depression and so he set himself to study its ‘causes and cures’ to see if there was any other way he could help them.

The result was Dr Neil Nedley’s Mental Health Education Course, Depression and Anxiety Recovery. It has been reviewed in over forty medical journals, piloted in the US and comes to this area through local facilitators, Katie Snyder, Kerry Gosset and Anna and Paul Schoolderman, Schoolderman all of whom are passionate about helping others

to a better quality of life.

Dr Nedley also runs a ten day Intensive Residential Depression and Anxiety course at Weimar in the US which Kerry and Katie were privileged to have recently participated in at his invitation. Eighteen year old ex Darfield High School pupil and latterly a St Margaret’s College student, Madison Earle only began playing hockey in 2010 when she was in Year 8 at St Margaret’s. The school also offered her the opportunity t o s t u dy I n t er n at ion a l Baccalaureate (IB) in Year 12 and 13, instead of the standard New Zealand NCEA. However a bout of illness required Madison to forgo completing her final exams at the end of last year, but her return to health has meant she will undertake them shortly.

While this is all exciting background information - the huge achievement for Madison has been her acceptance into Harvard University in the United States. She will travel to the States in early August to start pre season training for their Hockey team (or Field Hockey as they like to call it in the USA), with classes starting in the first week of September. Madison will play competitive hockey from early September to mid November. While at Harvard she will study Neurobiology/Pre Medicine as a four year undergraduate degree in the hope of attending Medical School for four more years beyond that.

“As I have progressed through my teenage years, I have narrowed this down to either a career in neurosurgery or cardiothoracic.”

“I used a sports recruitment agency owned by an exChristchurch woman to gain access to US universities and to guide me through the process of application. I sent a video showing my participation in my chosen sport (hockey) and fairly quickly after it had been submitted my email inbox contained an offer from Harvard. It’s somewhere I had always dreamed of attending,” Madison added.

Madison was also in discussion with other prestigious US universities, but Harvard was always top of her aspirational list. Following a trip to the States last September, Madison made the final decision between the top two contenders. She visited the campuses and areas where both Harvard and D ar t m o u t h ( t h e o t h e r contender) are based, before making her choice.

“It was an incredibly hard

decision as both schools had something different to offer, but in the end I committed to Harvard at the beginning of October 2015,” Madison said.

“The application process is complex and I was accepted on a combination of my academic, sporting and extracurricular activities, in conjunction with my diverse background. There were only six students from New Zealand admitted to Harvard for the Class of 2020. I am the only recruited athlete from this group of six. Approximately 50,000 hopefuls apply each ye ar an d on ly 1, 80 0 are accepted,” Madison commented. “It is such an honour to be given an opportunity like this, and it just goes to show that anything is possible, even when you think your goals are completely unachievable. I definitely wouldn’t be in this position had it not been for the support of my parents - who consistently put my interests first. My family and friends have always been supportive and if I can assist anyone else with the process of getting over to the USA - do contact me,” Madison finished.

The idea of an alpine chapel arose from a discussion between cottage owner H W F Hamilton and the Anglican Vicar of Kumara, Rev L K Collins on Easter Monday, 1951. The first Ranger of the National Park, R W Cleland and mountaineer M P J Glasglow, generated the public enthusiasm to make the concept a reality.

At a public meeting in October, 1953 a building committee of eighteen people was struck and the plans for building an interdenominational chapel went forward. Such was the energy, spirit and enterprise of this group that the fundraising and building of the chapel, designed

by Paul Pascoe and built by Stan Muirson Ltd, was finished just 2½ years later. On April 2nd, 1956, the service of dedication took place.

On Saturday, April 16th, the chapel will hold a special anniversary service to give thanks to God for the ministry that the chapel has offered over

Arthur’s Pass Chapel celebrates 60 years. those sixty years since its opening. The service will be held at noon with the Malvern Anglican, Co-operating Parish and Baptist churches taking part. Anyone may attend - a wonderful opportunity for a drive in the mountains this weekend.

The chapel is visited almost daily and serves as a place of prayer and quiet reflection for travellers and tourists. It is a place where family and friends whose loved ones have gone missing, or died in the mountains, have come for

refuge and solace. It is a special place for visitors staying in the Pass for holidays who want to go to a place of worship at Christmas or at Easter. There is a service at the chapel on the first Sunday of each month and on Sunday evenings on holiday weekends. Visitors who enter the chapel are often surprised to find the view through the front window reveals a waterfall, not seen from the road, but seen only when entering the chapel.

Volunteers collecting donations for St John’s Day were stationed outside various hotspots in Darfield on Friday, April 8th.

Their friendly but undemanding approach appears to have paid off for them - quite literally!

The volunteers collected an impressive $1432. on the day, making standing outside in the rain and cold well worth the effort. “We are extremely grateful to the public who were so generous with their donations and it was wonderful to meet a range of local people,” commented Ann

The volunteers’ presence throughout the country was also a reminder that St John do not just provide a life-saving ambulance service; they also play an increasing role in meeting the broader health needs of New Zealand communities. For almost twenty years James Reid (The Feelers) has been touring, writing and recording music and now it’s an opportunity for Darfield to enjoy the experience, without venturing into the bigsmoke.

James has won awards, sold thousands of records and his voice has been a part of all things Kiwiana. He’s a keen fisherman, a father and sports fanatic and while originally from Canterbury, James now resides in Auckland. He has had a colourful career in music and is still pounding it out with The Feelers, ticking up close to 4,000 shows and, as James laughs, I wouldn’t like to count the kilometres! James is about to tour the nation, but for the very first time ever, he is heading out with his acoustic guitar and going it alone.

“I have played solo a lot but never a full tour, so I have dusted off the fishing rod and will start in Whangarei and head as far down south as I can, dropping the rod in the water any chance I get.” James has a new album out this year and the first single is soon to be released, this tour is a collective of all the tracks he has written, along with a taste of what is to come.

“It’s an opportunity for people to come and hear their favourite, more raw, and in a way that they wouldn’t have previously heard.

We recently did the re-release of

Supersystem and were flooded with comments about how many people liked the acoustic version of Space Cadet. That was pleasing as it is nice to hear something you know, done differently; it’s refreshing.”

James will be performing across New Zealand over April/May/ June 2016 - including at the Darfield Hotel on May 21st, check him out on Facebook for

Over the weekend of April, 22nd -24th, Hororata Primary School will hold their third fundraising Pig and Possum hunt. Begun in 2014, the Hororata Primary School Pig and Possum Hunt is the result of parents uniting resources and ideas, to come up with something which not only raises funds for the school, but also brings the community together. As with any event that benefits the local community, organisers are always on the look out for volunteers to assist in any way they can - please approach committee members on the day or contact Hororata School directly if you are interested in assisting.

The weigh-in will take place on Sunday, April 24th at the Hororata Domain. The event has

been designed with children in mind, and there are no entry fees charged for those under fifteen years of age. There are still some fantastic prizes on offer for children across many categories.

There will be plenty on site to keep everyone entertained with raffle tickets being sold and children will be particularly interested in the Paintball competition. The ‘Shoot a celebrity’ event will have at least two sessions throughout the day and gives anyone who is keen, the opportunity to shoot this year’s turkeys. The turkeys will consist of not only Malvern School Principals but their board members too! This promises to be an entertaining day (with an animal entered, or not).

There will also be a fully licensed bar on site. This will be a cash bar and non-alcoholic drinks will be available as well as beer and wine.

Please be aware - a visit to the cashpoint before attending this event will be in order as no EFTPOS facilities will be available on the day.

The Christchurch Food Show, held at Horncastle arena last weekend (April 8th-10th), was not only attended by a large number of folk from Selwyn but it attracted a fair few of them as exhibitors also.

A recent survey of 334 Cantabrians found that a reasonable percentage of respondents were keen to try ‘adventurous’ new foods. Three out of five said they were more likely to try a new product if it was locally made or sourced. So the Food Show was a fabulous opportunity for locals to showcase and promote their wares on a huge scale.

“This year, 59% of exhibitors at The Christchurch Food Show hailed from the South Island -

and a third were from Canterbury, which goes to show how many fabulous producers there are in the region,”

concluded Rebecca Stewart, North Port Event Director.

So, bloody printer won’t work now I’ve upgraded to Windows 10!

Bugger! Some mes, not always, it happens. More especially with Brother printers as they have a large market share, but some me others too. It is not hard to fix.

First if it’s a USB (cable connected to your PC) printer remove the cable. Then hunt for Devices and Printers.

Right click on your printer and leI click to remove it. Next look for all the Brother (example only) stuff under the Start BuMon (LHS BoMom), then all apps, and ideally you want the Uninstall buMon. Once that’s done - restart your laptop or PC. Next go to the web site of the printer manufacturer www.brother.co.nz (for example) and look for downloads, drivers, and soIware.

Go to the page and put in the model number of your printer. It will then bring up the ‘Drivers’ it finds, that fit that model. You know that you are on Windows 10 (and very probably 64Bit) so leI click the download and then you are aIer the ‘Full Version’ which has everything you need. When Windows next screen comes up it’s beMer to save. This then puts a file in your downloads folder which you double leI click to install. As you work your way through the installa on at some point it will say connect the cable (if USB) or if network, it will search for the printer. When found, the install will con nue and before long the printer is finished and prin ng, scanning etc for you.

Sheep and beef farmer Warrick James has been elected as President of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association for 2016 at their Annual General Meeting, held at Riccarton Park Racecourse on March 30th.

Based near Glentunnel, Warrick was confirmed as President of the 154th Canterbury A & P Show in front of outgoing President Nicky Hutchinson and Association Members.

“It means a lot to be President of the Canterbury A & P Association. We host the largest and most prestigious Show in the country - it really is the pinnacle of the A & P movement. Having been involved from a young age with my family and seeing my own children take part over the years just makes this even more special.”

Warrick’s involvement with the Show began as a schoolboy when he started showing beef cattle and wool at Canterbury and other local shows with his family. Along with exhibiting at Shows his whole life, his commitment as a volunteer has been impressive.

At age eighteen Warrick joined the Malvern A & P Association Committee before going on to be President of that Association in 2001. That same year he joined the General Committee of the Canterbury A & P Association starting as Youth Section Convenor. He then went on to head the Beef Cattle Committee and later became Chair of the entire Cattle Committee encompassing beef, cattle, alpaca and more recently the popular Heartland Bank Young Auctioneers’

Competition. Warrick has also taken a keen interest in supporting the woodchopping section of the Show in recent times.

He, along with wife CeCe and their three young adult children Phoebe, Phoebe Duncan and Bridget, Bridget call ‘Flagpole’ in the Selwyn Gorge, home. The family moved to the 1300-hectare hill country property running sheep, beef and a carbon forest in 2010.

They have a Limousin cattle and Perendale sheep stud named ‘Ben More’ after the Station at Springfield where Warrick grew up.

Running the family business, along with his President’s duties, will make for a busy year for Warrick with board meetings, sub-committee meetings, general committee meetings, Association events and working bees all on the cards over the next twelve months.

the Show and on the farm, to help with the workload over the coming year.”

Continuing to grow youth sections and finding ways to involve commercial farmers in the Show are both top priorities for Warrick in his year as President.

“The RAS Youth Steer Competition was introduced in 2015 and is a great way to involve young people that are not part of a stud. Looking to the future we hope to extend this even further as we investigate ways to incorporate commercial farming exhibits in the sheep and cattle sections at the Show. It’s all about the Association evolving with the industry and finding ways to get rural people from all parts of the sector involved and engaged with the Show.

“This can only benefit the Show as the rural element is the backbone of this fantastic event. It’s what keeps bringing our urban counterparts back year after year and that’s what we all love most about this Show: the country comes to town and the whole community gets together to celebrate the best this region has to offer.”

Also elected at the recent Annual General meeting were Peter Gilbert (Ashburton) Senior Vice-President and Tim Black (Timaru) as Junior VicePresident.

The 2016 Canterbury A & P Show will be held Wednesday, November 9th to Friday 11th at ASB Agricultural Park in Christchurch. It’s the largest A & P Show in the country attracting 100,000 people, over 6500 livestock, equestrian and feature competition entries and over 500 trade exhibitors.

The FMG Young Farmer of the Year Tasman Regional Final featured a strong group of contestants with plenty of knowledge and talent on display. On April 2nd, in Rangiora, the eight contestants were put through their paces in a variety of challenging modules touching on all aspects of farming from practical hands-on tasks to theory and business components.

James Hoban from Hurunui took first place which has gained him a place in the Grand final, to be held in July.

Second place went to Andrew Wiffen from the Grey Valley Club, who also took out the Meridian E n er g y A gr i - k n ow l e d g e Challenge and Ravensdown Agri -skills Challenge.

Third place went to Karl Dean (26), from the Dunsandel Club, and he also won the crowd pleasing Silver Fern Farms Agrisports Challenge. Karl is a lower order share milker on a 700 cow dairy farm in Killinchy.

Glentunnel School has been a hive of activity in preparation for the approaching ANZAC day parade. Students have been making felt poppies which will be attached to wreaths and laid down at the memorial stone located at Glentunnel’s Community Hall. Attendees are requested to gather at Glentunnel School by 10am to begin the parade to the Glentunnel Hall. Leading the parade will be representatives from the New Zealand Defence Force, Coalgate Volunteer Fire Brigade and other organisations such as St John and Hororata Scouts. There will be student representation from Darfield High School and Glentunnel Schools who will each provide a reading during the service.

Last year, approx. 300 people attended the annual commemoration ceremony and organisers are hoping for another outstanding attendance this year to honour members of the armed forces who fought for their country thoughout the decades.

Thousands of volunteers, including many NZDF members, will be out in full force on Poppy Day today, Friday, collec ng funds for the Returned and Services Associa on (RSA) Poppy Appeal.

Tina Grant, whose husband was killed in service in Afghanistan, commented that the RSA plays an important role in suppor ng the families of New Zealand’s service personnel. Funds raised from the Poppy Appeal are used by the RSA to assist current and former servicemen and women (including NZ Police), and their partners, dependants and widow/widowers, with or without opera onal service overseas.

RSA Na onal Support Services Manager, Mark Compain said: “100 percent of the Poppy Appeal dona ons go towards our support services.” Mark, who served 21 years in the regular army, including opera onal service in Bosnia, East Timor and Afghanistan said: “Many current servicemen and women don’t realise RSA support is available to them too.

“New Zealand currently has 31,000 veterans - 11,000 from the period from WWII to Vietnam and 20,000 who served in campaigns post-Vietnam.

“We do work with a lot of elderly veterans, but we are also working extensively with people who served in later campaigns and with post-Vietnam service people, some in their late teens and twen es.

“Our support ranges from individual grants to alleviate need and hardship (for example, helping younger veterans re-train in other fields), developing family support for current serving NZDF personnel, and advoca ng for relevant research and health measures to improve the health and wellbeing of more modern veterans.

“We also assist veterans’ access to treatment and rehabilita on from Veterans’ Affairs, and advocate on their behalf.

“Poppy Appeal funds also cover scholarships and other support for dependants of veterans, recognising that the families of people who have served our country have also made sacrifices.

“We thank our collectors for their hard work, and the New Zealand public for their ongoing support in honouring our service people by giving a dona on and wearing a RSA poppy.”

This year’s Poppy Appeal street collec ons will be on Friday, April 15th, but fundraising will con nue un l Anzac Day, April 25th.

Trinity church in Darfield is repeating its ANZAC memorial window this year. During last year's Gallipoli centennial commemorations, local people from the community painted poppies on the church's west windows. Some of the poppies painted included the initials of soldiers who had served, or who had died overseas. Some poppies were white, symbolising peace and remembering both civilian and armed forces casualties of war, and some of the poppies were simply left plain.

On Sunday April 24th from 1-4pm members of the community are invited to drop by the church garden and paint a poppy on the outside windows. Paint, brushes and paint smock are provided along with a cup of tea and a biscuit for volunteer painters.

Greendale School students were lucky recently to have Vicky and Amanda Wilson visit as they were passing through the area.

The sisters shot to fame in the TV series ‘Keeping up with the Kaimanawas’. The popular show recorded the three sisters and their attempts to tame some of New Zealand’s wildest horses, the Kaimanawas. Vicky and Amanda’s sister Kelly, Kelly was unfortunately unable to attend the school visit. However, two

out of three Wilsons was just as exciting for the School’s avid fans.

Thanks to Paul and Phillipa Ffoulkes who organised the impromptu visit from Vicky and Amanda the children were able to have photos taken with the stars, request autographs and ask questions.

Malvern residents will have the opportunity to dispose of garden waste at a community garden waste day to be held at Hawkins Pit on Saturday, April 30th.

“If you’re planning to clean up your garden over Anzac Weekend this is a great chance to get rid of garden prunings, tree trimmings or weeds,” said Selwyn District Council’s Solid Waste Manager Andrew Boyd.

Boyd It costs $5 per car, $10 per ute or single axle trailer, $15 per twin axle trailer to dispose of garden waste on the day.

Payment is by cash only (no EFTPOS is available). Proceeds from the garden waste day will be donated to the Malvern Lions.

General rubbish, soil, flax, cabbage tree leaves, trees or branches over 10cm in diameter cannot be disposed of through this service.

Entry to the Hawkins Pit is off Cullen’s Road, east of Bangor Road, Darfield. The garden waste service will be operating on Saturday, April 30th between 10am and 4pm and will be operated by a combination of contractors and volunteers.
