Darfield High School student, Tom Freeman achieved an incredible first placing in the U12 Boys category of the Open Water Swim at the 2016 Calder Stewart National Schools Triathlon Championships. The Open Water section was held on April 8th at Lake Hayes in Queenstown. Tom not only won the category, but did it convincingly with a time of 00:07:15. This was no mean feat in a cool water temperature of 15.4 degrees. The low temperatures and intense training have not deterred him though said his mother. “Tom is keen and looking forward to having another go in the North Island next year,” said proud mum, Annabel Freeman. Freeman Whanganui is, for the first time, to have the privilege of hosting the annual ‘New Zealand Schools’ Triathlon Championships’ going ahead in March 2017 - thanks to a successful bid made by Sport Whanganui. Tom plans to participate again in the Open Water Swim section of the event.
