Darfield Volunteer Brigade Firefighter Hayley Rossiter smashed a New Zealand record at the United Fire Brigades Fire Fighter Combat Challenge held in Wellington last Friday and Saturday. The Combat Challenge is very much like a Firefighter Iron Man and is the most physically demanding event out of all the competitive challenges firefighters contest. “It's earned the reputation of being 'the toughest two minutes in sport’ - so crossing the finishing line is all the more rewarding!” explained Darfield CFO Alan Kittelty. Wearing full bunker gear and breathing from a Breathing Apparatus set, competitors race against each other and the clock in a series of tasks across the course. The five tasks are: • Climbing a six storey tower carrying a length of 70mm 19kg flaked hose • Hoisting a 70mm hose coil six storeys • Chopping using a 4kg shot hammer to drive a beam 1.5 metres • Extending a charged length of 45mm hose to knock down a disc • Dragging a life sized dummy a distance of 30.5m. The competition is a great test of skill and fitness and simulates the physical demands of real life firefighting to the public. In the individual sections: Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade CFO Alan Kittelty ran a personal best in 2.14.91. However, the star was undeniably Hayley, who smashed the New Zealand record with a time of 2.44.41 minutes in her personal section. On New Zealand soil she is the first woman to complete this course in under three minutes and is also the first woman in the open women category to gain entry to the prestigious ‘Lions Den’ competition.
