Tickets are selling fast to the upcoming ‘Sons of a Bitch & Mel Parsons’ wool shed shows across the Selwyn district.

Event co-organiser Mel Parsons, is encouraging anyone who is thinking of coming along to book now as some wool sheds are very close to capacity already. The wool shed shows have become something of an institution in the rural community, and starting at Windwhistle Quartz Hill Station on March 30th, the well known and loved entertainment team will be bringing fun and laughter to wool sheds right around the South Island. The show will make its way to Springfield (Brooksdale) on April 29th, and finish up in the Rakaia Gorge (Snowdon Station) on May 1st.

Many uniform clad volunteers gathered at the Darfield Recreation Centre on March 6th, 2016 to celebrate their years of service to St John.

Recip ients were from As h b u r to n , E ll e s m e r e , Leeston, Mayfield, Methven and Malvern.

Malvern’s eight candidates for recognition had an amazing 164 years of service between them.

“We are very proud of our members and the time they have devoted to St John,” said Area Chair Ann Shepherd.

Maurice Askew returns to the Selwyn Gallery on April 1st with a solo Exhibition of artwork spanning his long and interesting art and design career, plus an auction of various unsold works (April 29th) following the exhibition, with proceeds going to UNICEF. Now in his nineties, Maurice has had a brilliant career in the UK as a graphic artist for Granada TV, and here in New Zealand as senior lecturer at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts. As well as many superb commissions as a graphic designer and numerous awards, he has written several books.

Maurice has also made an award winning impression in animated film and in theatre as a set and costume designer. It seems there is nothing he has not achieved with astounding success. Since retiring Maurice has thrown himself into painting; bold abstracts and wonderful landscapes often with clever graphic elements.

“It is a pleasure to have Maurice exhibit at Selwyn Gallery again and an honour to host this generous auction with proceeds going to UNICEF,” said Selwyn Gallery Arts Coordinator, Ingrid Cole.

SO WHAT THE HELL IS RECOVERY MEDIA? When you buy a new laptop, probably the second or third time that you start it, down at the bottom right hand corner will pop up a little box which says: “Please make Recovery Media”. What the?

Well it’s really important to do that. Why? because this is the manufacturers way of not having to include the backup and restore CD’s, DVD’s or USB to replace Windows if any goes wrong with your hard drive. Instead, giving you the option of creating them.

So if you don’t make them, like the one I’m working on now, you need to contact the manufacturer, in my case HP, and ask for the recovery disks to be sent to you. They come at a cost if you bypass the make your own and it’s between $20 and $70 USD, so can get expensive. Plus, you wait for four, five, six days for them to get here.

Just a little time to make them for yourself will save a whole lot of hassle, or even better, ask your computer supplier to make them for you, as I always do for my clients when I supply a new laptop.

While this branch of the Riki family may not currently reside in the immediate area, Janelle RikiRiki-Waaka and her son Jordan will always be regarded as locals. Janelle is the daughter of Sheryl and Reg Riki - previous publicans at the Sheffield Hotel for many, many years.

Jordan has shown himself to be an extremely talented rugby league player and has displayed a huge amount of potential, pointing to a long and successful career in the sport.

At a lofty 6ft 3”, weighing in at 100kg and being only sixteen years of age (yes, that’s right he’s only recently turned sixteen!) Jordan appears to have the genetic qualities required to go far in his chosen sport. However mum Janelle explains that so much more is required than genetic blessings!

“He currently trains 5-6 times a week which is a mixture of Club training, South Island Academy, extra training with the Hornby Premier team and also trains in the school touch team that is going to Nationals. Plus there is also one training a fortnight for the Canterbury Māori U17 team.

Jordan is on a special diet that is high in carbs and protein and he eats about four/five large meals a day, plus high energy snacks. He has certainly put in the hard yards,” Janelle added with visible pride.

At such a young age, Jordan has already achieved more than most children dream about. His latest achievement was winning the Canterbury Rugby League Sportsman of the Year award at the Marriotts Hadlee Sports Awards recently. “As a winner he was also a finalist in the category of Super Turf Young

Sportsman of the Year,” commented Janelle.

Other major achievements for Jordan in the last twelve months include being the youngest player named in the NZ U16 League team, while in June last year he signed a three year development contract with the Brisbane Bronco's. He travels over there for training about eight to ten times a year.

Jordan was captain of the South Island U16 Rugby League team, as well as the Canterbury U16 team and was named Player of the Tournament at the South Island Tournament.

Jordan also recently made his debut for the Sheffield Sharks at the Annual 10's Rugby Tournament at Kirwee. Having not played a lot of rugby he managed pretty well.

“After he side stepped a few old men and they finally caught him

- one of them gave him a wee punch in the head to welcome him to playing with the big boys,” laughed Janelle.

Janelle and her husband Rawiri are understandably proud of Jordan in more ways than one and are looking forward to watching his dream unfold in the coming years. They are now proud Bronco supporters and will be wearing maroon from here on.

Janelle thanks her family and everyone that has purchased raffle tickets, stood on the sideline, offered sponsorship, words of wisdom and encouragement - all of which has contributed to Jordan’s escalating success.

Who would believe back in 1976 that the coming together of a group of locals with the sole ambition of, “let’s give it a go, let’s do Show Boat” was the beginning of what, forty years later, is the Kirwee Players Inc. Show Boat was planned to be a once-only experience, but no one bargained on the interest, drive, and sheer tenacity of many of the original ‘players’.

Kirwee Players are now an incorporated society, with its primary interests being to produce and stage amateur dramatic works pertaining to the theatre, including Musicals, Comic Opera, and the like for the enjoyment of its members, friends and patrons.

The group have, over the years, made a gradual improvement to their facilities, in conjunction with the Kirwee Community Hall committee, through fundraising and generous grants from Canterbury Community Trust and Creative NZ, for which they have been very grateful.

Some of the facilities are extension and temporary staging, quality stage and tab curtaining, orchestra pit, the wide range of lighting and dimmer board housed in a secure lighting box, extensive wardrobe, and more recently a permanent new wardrobe building, adjacent to the Hall.

Kirwee Players is proud to be part of this development and with the continued support of the community has offered a creative outlet to the many talented people who live in the wider community.

Mention the words Health and Safety and most people’s eyes glaze over moments before they abandon the conversation as quickly as possible. This seems to be the attitude of your average, ‘she’ll be right’ New Zealander. Due largely to the findings of investigations into the Pike River Mine disaster, the current Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 is being replaced with the Health and Safety at Work Act. This is to come into force on April 4th 2016 and will see several changes for employers and business owners.

A major part of the changes to the Acts is the identified need for full engagement and participation from employees and owners. The roles of owners/directors, managers and

Many of the Kirwee Players younger members have gone on to drama and dance, performed with prestigious drama groups, become Production Directors, Musical Directors - having gained their initial experience in the orchestra, or embarked on further costume and makeup journeys. They’ve attended lighting seminars and workshops covering skills with auditioning and acting techniques.

Personnel involved in Kirwee Players over the last forty years consider the group to be extremely organised, friendly and caring. There have been numerous long term friendships formed, and many of The Players foundation members are still performing on stage, or giving of their talents backstage.

This has been the strength of the group, maintained by new generations coming on-stream with the dedication required for the survival of the performing arts.

Forty years on, sandbags, drawing pins, and Kirwee Players Kiwi ingenuity have been replaced with safety railings, steps, computer controlled lighting, orchestra pit, padded seats for patrons and many accumulated assets, but above all the enthusiasm remains and will enable the Society to continue and go onward and upward.

“Our fortieth year production ‘Oliver’ is underway,” said Players stalwart Patricia Henderson, Henderson “and will be preceded by a Celebration Dinner to be held on April 23rd.

“I am passionate about Health and Safety because I believe each of us should get home safely at the end of a working day. It is not something I see as a headache, rather a series of processes to keep people safe at work.

The Heritage Open Weekend, held over the weekend of Saturday, March 12th and Sunday, March 13th, saw a vast number of enthusiastic visitors head out to explore Heritage treasures in the district. Both days stayed sunny for visitors and probably was the encouragement they needed to explore the nine properties over two days.

Guests began their journey at the Hororata Domain and spent some time discussing their options and planning a route for their day.

All of the available open properties made a huge effort getting ready for this weekend.

The gardens were immaculate, which was no mean feat considering the gale force winds on the Thursday prior to the event. It was a real treat for visitors to be able to roam the gardens and go inside the heritage homesteads. Many properties also had relics from pioneering days on display, tours were offered and r e a di ngs fr om di a r i e s

entertained attendees.

O n Sa t ur da y e v e ni ng, approximately forty people mainly local - attended the ‘Memoirs of our Pioneers’ readings at the St John’s Wooden Church in Hororata.

The pleasant evening was ably led by Vicar, Jenni Carter who began with a very old version of an evening prayer for the occasion.

“For a first time event the turnout of approximately 300 people was wonderful, but the bigger picture is the promotion the district has received. This event has enabled us to highlight how much there is to see and do here. This will have long lasting benefits for all businesses in the area,” concluded Projects Manager, Cindy Driscoll.

From the Coalgate/Glentunnel Reserve Management Committee They are a group of voluntary local people from Coalgate and Glentunnel, who manage both the Coalgate Reserve and Glentunnel Domain under the delegated authority of the Selwyn District Council. The Committee was formed by Government decree some 150 years ago. They would welcome the assistance of anyone new to the area and invite them to contact a member of the committee, Council representative Sam Broughton, Broughton or Community Board representative, Mary Ireland.

Ireland Wind Damaged Coaltrack Road Plantation.Plantation.While the land is administered by this Committee, the trees damaged by the high winds in 2014 were owned directly by the Council. The Council advise that a contractor will shortly commence clearing the area. The Committee invites comments from residents on a proposed future use of this area.

Walking Tracks.Tracks.There is a pleasant 1.1 kilometre walking track through the Coalgate Reserve maturing pines with several rest stations and picnic tables situated along the way. Dogs and horses are welcome as are MTB/BMX bikes, but the committee advise that no trail bikes or motor vehicles.

In the Glentunnel Domain the two kilometre walking track runs from Coaltrack Road corner within the tree line, to Joyce Reserve and entry can be from either end. From the Community Centre walkers should go to the rear of the playground, then down to the gate at the Domain entry point (sign indicating Riverview Walk). From here the track skirts the Selwyn River through a mixed forestry plantation exiting Joyce Native Reserve (by the bridge).

Coalgate Native Reserve – Community TidyTidy-up March 20th This native area, which is now nearly six years old, forms part of Te ara Karkariki’s ‘Green Dot’ project (a green passage from the Sea to the Alps). The Reserve Committee supports the re-establishment of native plantings to replace the loss of native bush on the high Plains but the native plantings are in need of a tidy up.

Coalgate BMX Track Opening March 20th After the Native Plantation Tidy-up there’ll be a sausage sizzle to celebrate the opening of the BMX track. The committee encourage those attending to bring bikes and test the track out - they are still seeking donations of flax plants, native grasses and suitable plantings for the sides of the track.

Selwyn District Council has approved the conditions for a loan of up to $8 million to be made to Central Plains Water Limited (CPWL).

The loan conditions were approved at a recent meeting of the Council’s Audit and Risk Subcommittee.

The funding would be released in a series of five instalments of between $1 and $3 million, and would generate interest for the Council of 10 percent per year.

Rakaia and Hororata Rivers, began operating last year.

The Council’s investment would be used to assist with design work on Stage 2+ of the Central Plains Water scheme, which is expected to cover around 25,000 hectares between Hororata and Darfield. Construction of this stage is scheduled to start in 2016. Other funding for Stage 2 design work would be provided by CPWL and the Ministry of Primary Industries, which would match the Council’s contribution through its Irrigation Acceleration Fund.

Selwyn District Council previously provided a $5.84 million loan to assist with design work on Stage 1 of the scheme. This loan was fully repaid in 2014, along with $1.2 million in interest on the loan.

Consultation on the proposal to invest in Stage 2+ of the scheme was undertaken during September and October 2015. 132 submissions were received on the proposal. Of these 72% supported the Council

advancing the loan, and 27% of submissions opposed the loan. two submissions were u n c le a r w h e t h e r t h e y supported or opposed the loan. Three public meetings were also held on the proposal which around one hundred members of the public attended. The majority of submissions to the Council saw significant potential benefits to the district from the Central Plains Water scheme from economic benefits to farms and local businesses as well as environmental benefits from improving ground water resources in Selwyn.

By way of security for the loan, CPWL is offering the Council, in the unlikely event the scheme were to fail, the ability to use the scheme’s water and development rights and the right to use the scheme’s Stage 1 intake and headrace infrastructure, provided this does not limit the operation of Stage 1 of the scheme. There are a number of other conditions associated with the loan.

It can now be formally announced that local Tammy Mehrtens is the newest member of the Netball Mainland family.

Originally from Kowai Bush and now residing in Darfield, Tammy will be responsible for the support and delivery of netball from community level through to representative play – leading the development of players, coaches and volunteers across these levels.

Currently, the recently wed Tammy is employed by Sport Canterbury as their Community Sport Advisor. She has made a fantastic contribution to sport Canterbury-wide playing a key role in the development and implementation of SportStart, as well as implementing the evolution and transition from Active Schools to a Community Sport Approach. This has, in a lot of ways, led the current local delivery thinking and Community Sport Strategy of Sport New Zealand. Tammy has been employed by Sport Canterbury for a five year period. However her Sport Canterbury association started prior to that when she worked for them as a student completing her degree at Lincoln University (Bachelor of Sport and Recreation Management with a minor in Exercise and Health).

Tammy is also on the Committee of the Malvern Netball Centre, with a variety of co-ordinator roles and is actively involved in netball coaching and playing.

Canterbury farmer Ian Ridge is encouraging locals to make the most of recycling opportunities for agrichemical containers, such as the upcoming Darfield collection on April 6th.

Ian and his brothers, Brian and Peter, Peter operate a 670ha arable and lamb finishing farm at Highbank near Methven and have been using Agrecovery for six years.

“It’s a really simple process

and just a no-brainer,” said Ian “ Y ou ’v e got c he m i c a l containers that would be a problem and someone is offering to take them away.

Why would you not do that?”

Agrecovery will be collecting empty agrichemical, animal health and dairy hygiene containers from the Farmlands site at 40 South Terrace, Darfield on Wednesday, April 6th from 10am to 2pm.

Previous Darfield events have been hugely successful with around 6,000kg of container plastic collected in the past twelve months. In response to this, Agrecovery plans to open a permanent site at Farmlands later in 2016.

Containers brought in to the event are recycled in New Zealand and made into underground cable cover.

For Ian Ridge, this is part of the appeal: “Agrecovery is a system where the containers are used in a way that’s better than what we used to do when we burned them many years ago or put them in the ground where they were just a problem.”

In fact, according to Agrecovery, containers that are buried will take more than 400 years to decompose, while burning them releases harmful toxins into the air and soil. Recycling on the other

hand turns what was waste into a useful resource.

“Each twenty litre container that is recycled saves energy equivalent to two litres of petrol,” explained Duncan Scotland of Agrecovery.

“Not only is the farmer or grower avoiding the environmental harm of burning or burying, but the recycled plastic reduces our reliance on importing virgin plastic for manufacturing.

“Plus, recycling your containers through Agrecovery is free.

“As Ian said, why wouldn’t you choose to recycle?” Duncan added.

To recycle: containers must be 0-60 litres in size, free of chemical residue, dirt and other contamination inside and out, and still have the label on to identify the brand. Ensure containers are well drained after triple rinsing. All containers will be inspected before being accepted.

Containers from 64 participating brand owners are free to recycle.

The TRYathlon was held on Sunday, March 13th at Jellie Park, making this the third consecutive year at this venue. The swim section took place in the Jellie Park Recreation & Sport Centre in a 50m heated outdoor pool, with the bike and run legs held around the adjoining field and surrounding streets. This was a wonderful achievement for all the children who completed the course - of which there were many from this area.

The Council met on Wednesday, March 9th and made the following key decisions:

Local Alcohol Policy: The Council has adopted amendments to its Provisional Local Alcohol Policy, following consultation on changes to policies relating to maximum trading hours for on-licences and the location of off-licensed premises. Under the amended provisions, the maximum hours provided for restaurants and cafés are 7am to 1am the following day, and the maximum hours for taverns are 7am to 2am the following day, seven days a week.

The amended policy provides that new standalone bottle stores are only allowed to locate in Business Zones or Neighbourhood and Local Centres as identified in the District Plan. The amended policy provisions will now be resubmitted to the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority.

Plan change provides for subdivision near Darfield: The Council has accepted the recommendation of an independent planning commissioner, to approve a change to the District Plan which would allow for the subdivision of 130 hectares of land near Darfield.

The change will lift the deferred status over the site, located on Bangor Road, and provide for subdivision down to an average of one hectare, subject to an Outline Development Plan which will also be inserted into the District Plan. The Outline Development Plan will be amended to address issues including connections and access to local roads and state highways, planting and the removal of shelterbelts, and upgrading water races. The decision will now be publicly advertised and will be subject to a thirty working day appeal period.

TIMETABLE FOR THE 2016 SHOW 2016 Show President, Matt Collier lives with his wife, Siona, Siona young daughters, Bonnie (6) and Beau (4) and farms his own property locally. The hardworking Collier family farm beef, sheep and dairy support on 440ha in the foothills near Sheffield. Matt is also an accomplished rural Real Estate Agent since looking for a further agribusiness challenge in 2014.

“When not at work I enjoy mountain biking, camping, exploring New Zealand and catching up with friends and family,” Matt commented.

Matt’s family is the very heart of the farm and they all enjoy the rural lifestyle together with the challenges and the rewards it brings. The focus on family is apparent when Matt describes the role of the Show; “The Show is about not only bringing families together, but also the local and wider community too. This annual event is a fun day, especially for children - whether they are competing, socialising or on the Ferris Wheel!”

The same could also be said for adults who attend the Show and the sense of nostalgia they feel competing, supporting, or catching up with friends in the familiar surroundings of the Sheffield Domain.

The Collier family enjoy the Show with their children every year and Matt is appreciative of Siona’s support during the lead up to the event. In between farming and supervising/coordinating two young children, Siona also provides more than a few morning teas for those at the A & P working bees ensuring that the grounds are in the best possible condition for guests. Bonnie and Beau will be exhibiting their pet lambs this year, just as their dad did when he was the same age.

“They get so excited about the Show and it is a talking point for months afterwards,” said Matt smiling. He understands the impact that the Show can have on children and he remembers it vividly himself. This year there promises to be a children’s Funzone with Pedalmania,

organised by hardworking Show committee member, Michelle Webster.

Webster “This will definitely be worth checking out and is the start of great memories being made for the youngsters,” Matt concluded.

Surrounded by the beautiful area in which they farm, the Collier family Matt and Siona, with daughters Beau and Bonnie and West Highland terrier Sacha.

The current 2016 Malvern A & P Show President, Matt Collier has fond memories of the Show dating back to when he was just a little boy. His earliest memories were from his primary school years making and entering school crafts and exhibiting pet lambs. “My favourite part of the Show was catching up with friends and just enjoying the whole experience.

The Show seemed so huge and was such a big adventure when you were a kid,” explained Matt with a nostalgic smile. So began his interest in all things agricultural which was fueled further when he took to selling Show catalogues at around ten years old. This gave him a beneficial and inspiring insight into the background cogs and wheels of the A & P Show.

This rural interest grew when he joined the A & P Association committee in the early 2000’s and began helping out with wool and other odd jobs, as required.

Ultimately, this led on to the gift lamb competition and escalated to assisting with horses.

Matt’s Show experiences led to his involvement in the subcommittee organizing the entertainment hub over the past couple of years. Show activities, a career with Farmlands Real Estate, as well as farming makes for a diverse and exciting lifestyle - but he still has his local A & P Show interests at heart. His progression to Show President has been a steady and natural one from an inquisitive young boy into a farmer/agribusiness enthusiast.

The theme of the 2016 Malvern A & P Show is the great outdoors, which is a subject that Show President, Matt Collier is extremely passionate about. In their spare time, the Collier family enjoy mountain biking, camping and exploring the country - nationwide.

“The Show is a great opportunity to showcase our rural community (with the great outdoors on its doorstep) along with the support of the Royal Agricultural Show (RAS) movement.”

Although it won’t be revealed until the day there will be a special Royal Agricultural Award made to an unsuspecting

recipient in the Main Ring following the dog high jump.

“The Show has a strong emphasis, not only on the agricultural roots of our area, but also its future direction, which includes community groups and local businesses th at s up por t Ma lv er n,” explained Matt.

“The decision was made to initiate the Great Outdoors theme as Sheffield/Springfield are our stepping stones to the great outdoors. Driving through these places can get you to numerous points of interest.

Everything is so accessible from here,” Matt finished.

To show just what is on offer in the area, numerous local adventure and outdoor activity operators have been invited to the Show to display their current offers and services in a designated outdoor experience tent.

The Malvern A & P Show is usually held at the Sheffield Domain on the last weekend of March and for me this signifies the end of the A & P Show season in the Selwyn electorate.

It is a great time for a show, with the weather often warm and settled, and it reminds me of the tradition of the autumn harvest festivals which are celebrated in the Northern Hemisphere.

It is a time for farmers and growers to share with the community the result of their

hard work over the previous months and to reflect on the successes and challenges of the spring and summer season.

Whether you are a large-scale crop or sheep farmer or just have a few animals on a lifestyle block, I hope you enjoy the opportunity to exhibit at the Show and I wish you the very best of luck with your entries.

Of course, A & P Shows are not all about livestock and crops.

“Check out the Art in the back shed. It will once again be festooned with contributions and imagination from seven local schools, from pre schoolers to adult amateurs it’s a vision of colour and variety,” Michelle enthused.

“There’s also a massive wool display in the old Bar shed ranging from fancy merino, through all the Breeds, including black and coloured to Children’s pet fleeces.

There’s also the opportunity to watch the famous Horrietta’s wool being spun into yarn at the same location.

“I’d really encourage any young and seasoned folk to give the sto ckjudg ing competition a go - there’s some great prizes to be had and full instructions are given on entry. Basically though it’s a ranking system for animals 1-4, best to worst, and has a midday start - check it out,”

As always, pets are popular with both entrants and spectators and beginning at 10am, lambs, goats, calves in fact anything on a lead (no husbands or wives please!) can enter to win.

Fiona Davidson, creator of the Springfield School Aprons has announced that the bib style Malvern aprons are now back in stock - just in time for the Malvern A & P Show!

“Due to high customer demand for these types of apron we have replenished our stock and will also be selling our everpopular tea towels,” explained Fiona excitedly. The possibility of winding the business up to a close was being toyed with by PTA members recently but a refreshed demand for the items, together with a significant sales increase put an end to any idea of closing sales.

“This venture has been going for almost two years now and as long as there is a customer demand, we will have the stock available. We are very excited about displaying our items at the Malvern Show,” Fiona added.

The Springfield School Apron initiative has raised well over $35,000 in profit so far and this has enabled the school to provide many educational extras for the students that would not have been obtainable otherwise.

This year’s Malvern A & P Show will see the revival of the Dorset Horn class. This is all due to one man’s lifelong dream to own and breed these rare heritage animals.

Ashley Shadbolt from West Melton is proud to be exhibiting Dorset Horns after a twenty year absence of the category at local A & P Shows.

“Dorset Horns are a heritage breed, but for ease of handling, shearing and trafficking the animal, the horns were bred out of them many years ago. They went on to fall out of fortune with commercial sheep breeders and ended up with the horned version being a rare breed,” explained Ashley.

Ashley is excited about the reintroduction of the category as it is one that he is completely passionate about.

He is an experienced exhibitor, with his first show entry being made at just five years old, followed by entries every year since.

Ashley’s Show involvement began with pet lambs, and he has been involved with looking after both the flowers and

Ashley had always wanted to exhibit this particular breed as they look so different to other sheep; their large curled horns adorning both rams and ewes.

The very thing that led to the breed’s near demise, with only 500 left in the 1990’s, is the very same reason the breed is now in the revival stages. They are an ideal breed on a smallholding, being extremely quiet and easily handled, as well as producing excellent meat and saleable fleeces. It is pleasing to be able to report that numbers have increased slowly over the past

few years.

“They are extremely advantageous on a lifestyle block. Because of the big horns, they cannot poke their heads through fences and eat all of my shrubs!” laughed Ashley.

Dorset ewes can breed twice in one year, although three lambings in two years is more usual. The lambing rate is good and they are excellent mothers with abundant milk.

Ashley is hoping that his entry in the Dorset Horn category will encourage other registered stud breeders to exhibit their rare breeds in more A & P Shows in the future.

As a steward in the horse section, students write up the result cards, hold the ribbons when required for presentation, mark off the exhibits as they enter the ring etc.

This year a student is also required in the Dog and Cattle sections, plus they will assist in the Stock and Station section also.

The Malvern A & P Association thank Rex Smith, the teacher in charge of the Rural College at Darfield High School, for all

the extra work required in setting up this exercise. In past years the judges in both the Sheep and Horse sections have commented that the students have been excellent and make a very worthwhile contribution. They are always polite, hard-working and well/ suitably dressed for the conditions.

At this year’s Show there will also be two trainee judges on site. As part of becoming an Equestrian Judge, once trainee judges have passed an exam, they start judging with a tutor judge. The tutor judge is there only for guidance and this exposure is a great way for a trainee judge to gain confidence judging at an actual event.

The Dog High Jump is always an exciting and fun addition to the Show programme. This year, as always, judges are on the lookout for dogs that can jump. Hay bales are put on top of each other to see which dog can jump the highest. Crowds always gather around the main ring to eagerly await the start of this event, held at 1.45pm.

Prizes are generously sponsored by Jim Collier, Collier Malver n B utc hery a nd Farmlands. There are two categories in the high jump category - small dogs and large ones! Organisers would love to see more entrants and encourage people to bring

their dogs and join in the fun while having the opportunity to win some great prizes.

The Terrier Race is held following the Dog High Jump and prizes for this event are sponsored by Farmlands.

Terriers participating in the race need two handlers - one to let the dog go at the start line and one to catch the dog and run back to the finish line.

“This is a fantastic event for spectators and organisers look forward to greeting everyone at this section of the Show,” said Melissa Jebson who will likely be commentating the event in her capacity as PA announcer.

An increase of 300 entries was received at the forty-fourth annual show of the Malvern Agricultural and Pastoral Association, held at Sheffield on Saturday. The weather was bad and the gate takings of £85 were down about £20 on last year. The increase in the number of entries created a record for the association. A record number of cattle was also entered. In pre-war years the cattle entry were often about 10, but on Saturday there were 70.

Increased entries were also received for the horse sections.

Mrs R. E. Adair with West Wind won the championship award in the light horses section. This is the second successive championship award won by this horse. The championship harness horse was exhibited by J.S. ans R.B. Lilley, who have been showing horses in the South Island for thirty years.

Entries were also good in the sheep sections, and there was a good representation of breeds, although in some sections competition was confined to two breeders. The general standard was high and some fine stud sheep were shown.

The root classes were again well filled, and the collection of seed potatoes and other vegetables was well up to standard.

Championship awards were as follows:Light horses, Mrs R.E. Adair, harness horses, Messrs J.S. and R.B. Lilley, cob H. Reed and Mrs R.K. Reed, Mount Torlesse Cup, Susan Grigg’s Autumn Gold; Cattle: Jersey and champion cow, M. Johnson; reserve, S.C. In the Malvern Judd Cup Greendale were too strong for Kirwee thanks to a century from Blair Chapman and will take on South Malvern in the final on Saturday at Kirwee.

Greendale put up a good score of 259 for four with Blair scoring 112. Nick Jenkins also chipped in with 55.

In reply Kirwee put in a good performance but could not chase down the big score and were eventually bowled out for 196.

THANK YOU The committee for the Darfield High School Ex Students’ Association would like to say a huge “Thank You” to a lot of people who made the 65th Jubilee Dinner such a memorable occasion.

James Morris, Principal of our high school made a considerable contribution to much of the detail in staging such an event. Jane Huggins for her administration.

Rachel Balchin and the award winning Jazz Band which entertained our guests, Nikki King and her team from the PTSA who supplied the refreshments and nibbles for those needing a wee something after they had been on the tour of the school. The students who helped set up the tables and chairs at the Recreation Centre on Friday and to those who took the time to be available to conduct the tours. A special thank you to the five students who “slaved” away clearing tables and doing dishes until quite late. - You were amazing. Chris Singh was on hand to provide a P.A system and the appropriate music for the generations who attended. Our anniversary cake was made and decorated by Judith Earl-Williams who made sure the school colours were included in the detail.

Janet Taege and all those who took part in the church service on the Sunday. Scott and Sarah (Deputy Mayor) Walters, Graham Oakley, Helen Thornton and Pam Davies who stayed and helped the committee to “clean up” - those extra pairs of hands made it so much more bearable.

If it wasn’t for a whole bunch of willing volunteers, the committee could not have staged this special day in the life of our school.

We look forward to seeing everyone back in 2021 for the 70th Jubilee.

I give them pictures of my family, my dog, and of me gardening, taking things apart in the garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch, and doing what anybody and everybody does every day.

I also listen to their conversa ons, give them the "thumbs up" and tell them I like them.
