On Saturday, March 5th, over 200 people who have been associated with Darfield High School (DHS) over the years congregated to celebrate the school’s 65th Jubilee. The celebrations were launched with an afternoon tour of the school which was enjoyed by past and present staff, students and their partners. Current students escorted the attendees around the school for a grand tour which was followed in the evening, by dinner at the Darfield Recreation Centre.

Chairperson Lindsay Johnston and Annette Scott (Treasurer) greeted guests while suitably attired in the 1950’s uniform of DHS. After the initial greeting, James Morris, Morris the current principal gave a comprehensive summary of the past 65 years of the School’s history, creating some interesting conversational points about the early days.

Membership was then bestowed upon Diane Woodward, Woodward for her many years of service to the Ex Students Association, which includes her role as Secretary for over fifteen years.

The Committee appreciated the participation and helpfulness of present day pupils over the weekend. The school's Jazz Band capably entertained the crowd during the social hour,

while senior students waited on tables and organised the servery.

An exciting highlight from the celebrations was the return of past pupils from the School’s 1951 inception and the following five years. Ex-

pupils were able to provide much information, insight and stories about the newly formed DHS from a rare and immensely interesting first hand perspective.

When Jane Olsson from Greendale, gained an outstanding result at the Horse of the Year (HOY) 2016, it was on a horse that had at one time, been destined to be euthanised!

Jane and her horse Astek Georgia placed third in the Level One Horse 1c Dressage class at the event. The annual HOY competition, held at the Hawkes Bay A & P Showgrounds from March 1st-6th, sees over 1,400 riders and 1,800 horses competing for titles and prizes, and is a looked forward-to feature on most equestrian calendars. Riders are required to qualify with prior points from other events, to compete at this prestigious competition.

Jane negotiated a price to purchase Astek Georgia from her owners, after spotting her on Trade Me. Numerous prospective buyers had been unable to float the mare and in fact one attempt resulted in so much damage to the horsefloat the purchaser quickly reneged on the sale. Her owners were faced with no other option but to have her put down.

She was sold to Jane under instructions that she be used as a brood mare (assuming she could transport her home!) as she was supposedly too dangerous to ride!

It soon became apparent that the term ‘stubborn mare’ was quite true!

“The owners made it very clear upon the sale that she was potentially dangerous, difficult

Jane Olsson looking as proud as punch on her prize-winning horse - Astek Georgia. and was not to be ridden,” Jane commented. “We managed to move her on a horse transporter which she still showed resistance to, but we managed it nevertheless.”

Jane wasted no time in beginning training the horse and enlisted the help of local horse afficiando Bert Elstob to assist her with the task.

“Bert was an amazing help to me in getting her to behave herself and I could not have succeeded without him,” she added.

There was an immense amount of hard work, enthusiasm and skill that went into training Astek Georgia over a period of four months. Now, the mare is truly a credit to Jane and her belief that the horse was worthy of saving

and training, despite evidence and advice to the contrary.

This was their first HOY event and Jane was visibly delighted with the result. “As a first-timer I was expecting, and would have been happy with, getting a midfield placing. I was astounded when I saw that we had got third!” she said, beaming.

Jane thanks Bert for all his valuable help and also her employers at Hororata Village Bar and Cafe for being so understanding and flexible with working hours.

“Travelling there and back was such a long and mainly sleepless trip for both riders and horses, but I will definitely be keen to go again next year.

It was just an amazing experience,” she concluded.

Over Easter many from Malvern will be at a Camp with over 3,000 young people at Spencer Park. Eastercamp is an event run by Canterbury Youth Services to support local church youth groups across the South Island. There are games and competitions, cafes, sports, music, and time to relax. The Camp is set in the context of the Easter story with bands and speakers at the Bigtop, and meetings in the morning and evening.

Local youth worker, Sam Broughton, Broughton has been to over fifteen of these camps with hundreds of local young people and is looking forward to another great time away.

“Camps allow time, and create space, for young people to make new friendships and reflect on their life's direction,” Sam said.

“At school we are often in age

group bunches and Camp provides opportunities to meet people older and younger than yourself, while being challenged about opportunities and purpose,” he added.

Anyone aged 13-18 can go to Camp, but must be part of a youth group to attend.

Darfield’s Baptist Youth Group is held every Friday night during term time.

Team members walking the Relay For Life track in Rolleston to raise money for Canterbury Cancer Society.

This year’s Cancer Society Relay attracted over 450 participants For Life Selwyn was held in - many of them local, and at Rolleston last weekend and least eighty of these were cancer survivors and carers.

The weather gods smiled upon the event and there was plenty of slip, slap, slopping and wrapping while participants enjoyed the warm weather and walked and talked for eighteen hours! The relay began at 4pm Saturday, March 5th and finished at 10am on Sunday, March 6th.

The Rolleston relay raised an incredible $51,000 for the Canterbury Cancer Society and this will be used to continue giving free support to those impacted by cancer. “The Cancer Society would like to thank all the wonderful people who got in behind this event to make it the amazing success it was,” enthused Kate Shearer, Shearer a Relay For Life Spokesperson.

Canterbury Cancer Society also provides support to families, funds vital research and promotes education on reducing

the risk of cancer; Relay fundraising goes a long way to contributing towards these services.

The Relay is an annual event and involves entering as a team which always has one of its members walking on the track throughout the entire event.

Relay For Life begins with a moving Opening Ceremony, with cancer survivors and carers leading the first lap of the event.

Later in the evening, a Candlelight Ceremony is held to remember love ones affected by cancer.

When not on the track, team members enjoy a festive, familyfriendly environment with heaps of activities and entertainment.

The Relay For Life is not just a fundraiser, it allows the community to come together and celebrate cancer survivors and carers; remember loved ones lost to cancer; and fight back by raising awareness and funds to support the work of the Cancer Society.

Throughout the night, guests explored the varied displays of memorabilia and school uniform fashions which had been collected over the years. There was also plenty of ‘gathering in’ for photos during the night to document this important milestone in the history of the School. The night was certainly buzzing with nostalgia as the disco began, playing music suitable to the occasion from the 50’s onwards.

Locals Rosalie and Roger Mason, had a life changing Mason experience last year. Little would anyone realise but behind the counter at the Drapery and tramping the streets of Darfield were a rapidly changing pair! On the recommendation of their friends, Roger and Francie Taylor, who they had witnessed making radical changes in their lifestyles with great results, they both decided to participate in the CHIP Programme in Darfield last year. Over a thirty day period they learned many things about the effects of the ‘Western Diet and Lifestyle’ on their health. They adopted the changes with enthusiasm and began to feel immediate results.

Roger was out exercising at every given opportunity; Rosalie was churning out new recipes in the kitchen after work and together they began their journey into better health. After just 2 1 days on the programme, a second blood test was taken. An initial blood test is taken as a marker on entry to the Programme. On graduation night their results were astounding and they are happy to share them with

The successful and enjoyable Kirwee Tens Tournament was once again held last weekend in the 30 degree heat of Sunday.

Games kicked off at 10am going through to late afternoon with ten teams competing in the tournament. Teams were fielded by Burnside, Diamond Harbour, Springston, Sheffield, West Melton, HSOB, Lincoln, Kirwee, Oxford and Lyttelton in the competition. Many local names appeared in Christchurch teams such as: Nick Fisher playing for Lyttelton

and Matt Holloway who was in the HSOB team. “The Sheffield team or as some call it the ‘Riki invitational side’,” laughed event spokesperson David Topham, “was, as always, filled with a selection of local talent from many of the Malvern Club sides, as well a few fleet footed young players from Christchurch.

“Overall it was a great preseason hit out for all teams each having a minimum of four games, before a final to finish.

Lyttelton played Springston in a

tightly contested final with only one try scored in each half and both going Lyttelton’s way.

They finished 10-0 winners.

“Barbecue food was provided by the Kirwee RFC committee, as well as refreshments. That and the coffee van, plus DJ music playing all day, meant no one needed to go anywhere but the sideline to watch the footy!

“Overall it was one of the better Tens days at Kirwee - with the organisation running like a welloiled machine,” David commented, “and the standard of rugby this year, by all teams, looked slicker, fitter and faster than in previous years,” he finished.

Springfield’s Clayton Yaxley endured hours of effort to emerge as the first place getter in the gruelling six hour Ironman motorcycle challenge, held in Gore last weekend. The mammoth challenge attracted approximately one hundred experie nced r iders from throughout the South Island. The race, which ran for six hours through hill country in Southland, is notoriously one of the toughest motorcycle races in New Zealand. Not only due to the tough terrain, but also because of the length of the race. The six hour event challenges participants skill, endurance and mental toughness. This was Clayton’s third year as a competitor and his previous experience stood him in good stead. He demonstrated his proficiency in all the requirements of the demanding course, which gained him a much deserved first place.

Clayton rides in numerous races around the South Island but commented that this particular event is definitely a highlight on his riding calendar - largely due to the extreme toughness this type of race exhibits.

The race has provided some valuable training and experience which Clayton intends to draw on for the forthcoming New Zealand Cross Country series. This series consists of six races throughout New Zealand and last weekend’s win not only provided him with further competence, but also with a huge boost in motivation to continue his winning streak.

For anyone wanting to learn to play Bridge - joining the Darfield Bridge Club is the ideal way to do so.

The Club meets at the Darfield Catholic Parish Centre, on the corner of Telegraph Road and Cardale Street, every Monday night at 7:20pm and Bridge is played from 7:30pm until 10:15pm The Club has 32 active members and always welcomes new bridge players.

Round two of the Canterbury Mini MX X-Country event was held at Annavale Station, Springfield, on Sunday, February 28th. The follow up event to Round one, held at Clayton Yaxley’s Yaxley property in January, was a huge success with a donation presented to Springfield School from both events. Canterbury Mini MX Club were delighted with the attendance of over 130 children and parents. “We would like to thank the Annavale owners and Clayton for providing such great locations for riding and with such awesome views,” enthused Vanessa Moore, Moore Canterbury Mini MX Committee spokesperson.

“The American owners of Annavale Station are conscientiously abiding by the requirements of their New Zealand land ownership and generously assisting community groups such as this with their events and fundraising.

“Glen Glen Munro and Clayton did a marvellous job of setting up the tracks at both venues,” Vanessa added. “Most of the children would never have ventured far from a MX track before and they really had to push themselves on this one. They did really well,” she said with a smile.

Glenn watched over the children on the trickier parts of the track which led to a huge skill improvement for participants.

On February 26th and 27th the Malvern Collie Club held its famous annual sheepdog trials on the property of Mr D.A. Duncan, ‘Springvale', Springfield.

“Competitors came – bye and were early on the heading courses for both days in a bid to run their dogs, in what was to be two hot sunny days,” reported spokesperson Francine Murray.

“The sheep kindly loaned by Kerry and Liz Pauling were on their best behaviour and while not used to the steep hill country, handled it well. On the long head they pulled nice and came steadily down. The points were high and the final results were very close!”

The Courtenay Paparua Ploughing Match which is usually held in June, was this year held on Saturday, March 5th on the Seaton Bros property. It was quite a shock for contestants to deal with 30 degree heat, when they are normally more used to waiting

for the June frosts to thaw.

Organisers planned the event earlier so as to have the ploughman more match ready for the New Zealand final, held in April. However with harvest still happening this took both competitors and committee members out for the weekend.

Months of hard work and organization paid off for the Malvern Fun Run committee on Sunday when a crowd of around 400 people gathered at the Darfield Recreation Reserve in brilliant weather. They gathered to run/walk/cycle a course from the Darfield Domain through McHugh’s Plantation and back to the starting point. Pre-schoolers weren’t left out as they had loads of fun participating in a mini obstacle course.

Meanwhile older children and adults could barely wait to get started on the 1km wet 'n wild obstacle course!

The food, entertainment and great prizes added to an overall great day out which enabled the Fun Run committee to raise approximately $6,000 for Darfield Primary School students. This money will go toward visual display units and ibooks.

Organisers give a huge thankyou to all those who were involved in some way or another in the event.

The Malvern Judd Cup finalists won’t be found until the final match between Greendale and Kirwee next week, after Greendale were too good for South Malvern.

South Malvern batted first and were rolled for 146 as Regan Dalley and Nick Jenkins both grabbed three wickets each.

Greendale cruised to victory in the 29th over with five wickets to spare. Tig Dalley top scored with 64 and Blair Chapman chipped in with 47.
