The Glentunnel School group heading off the beaten track to raise funds for Hororata Parish in the beautiful surrounds of Middle Rock Farm.

Hororata Parish’s bike/run/ walk event was enjoyed by many over the weekend. Held on Sunday, February 28th, the day offered plenty of opportunity to get off of the beaten track and take in the surroundings at Middle Rock Farm.

“The event ran very well and we have had some wonderful feedback from participants,” said one the event’s organisers Cindy Driscoll.

Hororata Parish would also like to stress their sincere gratitude to the Nell family who opened up the gates of Middle Rock Farm (based in the Lake Coleridge basin) to the public for the event. “A big thanks also goes to the volunteers and sponsors who helped

make the day possible,” said Cindy with an appreciative smile.

Although the day was primarily a fundraising event, it was also a highly successful community family fun day and a great time was definitely had by all.

On Easter Saturday, Darfield’s popular Mac’s Mart store will close its doors for good. The second hand and collectibles shop, owned and operated by Helen Stewart, Stewart has been a reliable and consistent main street fixture in Darfield for many years.

“Locals still come in requesting to hire machinery,” Helen laughed, “even though this feature has not been available since the previous owner divided the business and sold the hire separately, over thirteen years ago.”

The business was originally begun by Tracey Dunstan assisted by Bronwyn AdamsAdamsHooper who then took over the enterprise soon after its establishment.

Sadly, the shop will cease to trade just five days shy of its 25th anniversary, with Helen having owned it for almost half that period.

During her time as the business owner, Helen has made many precious memories. Mac’s Mart provides a basket of toys in the shop to occupy little ones while their parents browse and shop.

Over the years she has loved to see small children grow from creative, toy-playing preschoolers to young adults.

Although the majority of Helen’s memories are good, she has been plagued over the years by furtive shoplifters. The cost of heightened security was prohibitive and sadly without concrete proof, her legally acquired goods were being illegally removed from the premises.

However this annoying and costly blot on the business was

well and truly outweighed by the good times. Helen has been fortunate to always have the support of family and friends and has much enjoyed customer contact over the years.

“I would like to extend a special thanks to those that have given me advice and a friendly boost when needed, over the years,” she smiled.

The decision to close wasn’t an easy one, and the store’s going will definitely leave a gap in Darfield’s range of shops.

However the dwindling second hand market caused not by the growth of online selling, but by the influx of cheaply made, inferior quality, furniture with no resale value, have hastened the shop’s end.

“This is also true of modern appliances,” Helen added, “they have a short life, before being rendered unusable and thrown away.”

The items consistently most in demand in Macs Mart were the old-style egg beaters, flour sifters, sturdy kitchen utensils, cast iron pots and enamelware - all the good quality items from yesteryear that are no longer available.

On Easter Saturday Helen finishes trading in all things wooden, metal and vintage and will happily pursue her gardening, golfing and farming.

Without a doubt Mac’s Mart has provided a valuable service in the township and the closing of it is tinged with more than a little sadness, while the chance to secure quality second hand goods locally will be sorely missed by many.

Following on from the ‘Visitors Guide to the Heritage of Hororata and Beyond’ which the Hororata Community Trust helped produce in 2015, visitors can travel through time to Canterbury’s pioneering past by visiting heritage properties and museums in Hororata, Homebush, Glentunnel, Windwhistle and Lake Coleridge. The district’s first Heritage Open Weekend will take place on March 12th and 13th 2016.

“The visitors’ guide was a great process to get the community collaborating. We have so many heritage treasures in the district and to present them in one document really reinforced how much we have to offer,” commented Simonetta Ferrari, Ferrari owner of Gunyah Country Estate. “We didn’t want the brochure to be an isolated one off project so the Heritage Open Weekend was the natural next step to showcase our district.”

Properties opening for the weekend include Gunyah Country Estate, Terrace Station, Homebush Stables, Coton’s Cottage and Museum, Washpen Falls, Glentunnel Museum, Steventon, Rockwood Station, The Point Station, St John’s Church and more.

“Many of these properties are generally only open by

appointment and prefer group bookings, so this is an unique opportunity to really explore them at your leisure. A number of properties are offering special activities throughout the weekend.”

The Point Station will be recobbing one of their historic cob huts and people will be able to get hands on with this pioneering building trade.

Steventon will entertain with readings from Lady Barker’s diaries giving a delightful insight into life in the early 1800s. Terrace Station will have a quiz table complete with no longer used 19th century items.

“There is so much on offer; people can enjoy museums, grand old homesteads, vast established gardens, bushwalks and a wonderful offering of food to treat the taste buds while exploring the district. With the Open Day held over a whole weekend, people can leisurely enjoy the properties and the interesting places in between.”

Some of the properties will be selling homemade baking and preserves to enjoy, or visitors can call into the historic St Andrews of the Glen church and enjoy the quaint Glen Kirk Café. Lake Coleridge Lodge will be open for Devonshire teas, which can be enjoyed while

learning about the history of New Zealand’s first hydro power station.

Windwhistle School will open its gates for the weekend offering a BBQ, playground for children and history of the area. People are also invited to bring their own picnics to enjoy at any of the properties.

“There is a range of accommodation from camping, B & B, self-catering and resort style available in the district, we encourage people to make a weekend of it and stay. On the Saturday night there will be a special event in the Hororata Parish wooden church with readings from diaries of the pioneering land owners from around the district.”

“While the aim of the weekend is not necessarily fundraising, any profits will go towards continuing to promote and develop heritage projects in the community. We are appreciative of the support from the Hororata Community Trust,” Simonetta concluded.

Tickets will be sold at the Hororata Domain from 9.30am both days; there will be no ticket sales at the individual properties.

The two plaques at St James Church - one in recognition of the centennial in 2010 and the other to commemorate the closing last weekend.

Last Sunday, February 28th, and just four days short of their 106th Anniversary (March 3rd 1910) a good crowd attended the official closing service of the St James Presbyterian Church and Sunday School at Sheffield.

Local piper Fred Bull piped ‘Flower of Scotland’ at the entrance, by the commemorative stone, as the service began, followed by ‘Highland Cathedral’ as those attending took their place in the shade of marquees. The Rev

Stephanie Wells officiated at the last service which included the symbolic closing of the doors.

Many of those present had celebrated their life's milestones with the church, for example Murray and Joan Wason who recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. While others attending included Sunday school pupils and teachers.

“The Church’s history and presence in the Sheffield district will be greatly missed,”

Playing cricket into the evening - just as many generations before have done.

Hororata Primary School enjoyed con nuing a long picnic tradi on last Friday, February 26th. The picnic, organised by the School’s PTA was described as a fantas c event. “The children had a great me; they swam and played an early evening game of cricket and a BBQ was on hand to provide sausages and bread,” enthused Penny Oliver, secretary at Hororata School.

Local Hororata picnics have a history da ng right back to 1890 but the picnic food has changed a great deal since Sir John Hall would come down with a wagon and horses to take the children to his estate for them. His old orchard was very popular and the food for these occasions was apparently all provided.

Selwyn Youth Council managed to organise yet another fantastic event in Darfield last Friday night.

Incorporated into their summertime programme were drive-in movie nights based at various locations in Selwyn. The event provided family fun for all generations while still making the most of the soon-to-disappear summer. The 1989 classic - Back to the Future 2 (which featured Michael J Fox in his memorable role as Marty McFly) was screened and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

To the Editors: I was so glad I went to hear The Kilmarnock Edition sing in the Baptist Church last Friday night. A truly brilliant and exhilarating experience; their choice of songs, both Scottish and Irish were wonderful and with the audience participation brought a tear to my eye. There was lots of good fun and laughter. I would like to request that they please come back soon.

RODENTS (RATS AND MICE) The NRL is set to return to Christchurch with Penrith Panthers bringing their Round 10 home game against New Zealand Warriors to AMI Stadium on Saturday 14th May, 2016.

Christchurch is a sports mad city but hasn’t seen an NRL game since 2010. The time is now for the great sport to return as the Panthers make the city their home away from home and commit to the promotion and development of rugby league in Canterbury through community initiatives.

You may feel summer is not the me to be thinking about rats and mice around your property, but by the me the seasons change it is usually too late, they are in. It is a good idea at this me of the year to check all the weep holes at the bo<om of the brick work on your outside walls. If you can push the thick end of a ballpoint pen into the hole - a mouse can enter. Get yourself some galvanised whitebait mesh and cut it into widths the height of the slot, and then cut to about 75mm long. Fold in half (not a ght fold) and push into the weep holes. When you let it go it will open to fit the slot, do not use any thing that will block off the air flow or stop moisture from ge ng out of the walls. Heavy plan ng around the walls of your home is not the best idea as rodents like cover and can become very ac ve. Check around your waste pipes for gaps, and also the door jambs either side of your garage doors where they meet the floor slab. There are quite oTen large gaps in these areas, larger gaps can be filled with a sand and cement mix and painted to match the house. Mice generally live in about a ten metre by ten metre cube and don’t travel far out of this area. They pee about 3,000 mes a day marking their area and leaving pheromones, that’s why they are considered so dirty and should be controlled with urgency. Be<er to keep them out, so block up holes.

Rats on the other hand will travel ninety or so metres to food, or play. Walnut trees, fruit trees, and compost are great for bringing them around. ATer feeding it’s play me and they love to climb, so roof and ceiling spaces are great.

Cut away all trees and climbers at least a metre from your spou ng, while pergola poles can have a wide plas c band a<ached to stop them ge ng a grip to climb, like a possum ring on a power pole. It’s a good idea to have three or so rat bait traps against the walls of your house. Once set up don’t touch them for at least a couple months as rats are very shy. ATer a couple of months check them - if they show no nibbling, move them to a new area. Re-bait those that need it and leave in the same posi on. Use rat sta ons because they will do both rats and mice.

Note there won’t be dead rats or mice in the bait sta on when you open them, but remember rats and mice are in townships just as prolifically as in the countryside.

So the message for rodent control is that preven on is our strongest weapon.

Whitecliffs Equestrian Challenge competitors from as far away as Blenheim and Timaru came and enjoyed what turned out to be a spectacular day for all those attending, the event last weekend.

Course designer Amandine Laforgue and host Mike Ransome, Ransome said the Challenge had been a huge success and they thanked all who came, especially the sponsors, judges and volunteer helpers.

Although the temperature soared to thirty degrees, this didn’t deter horse and rider from a course that was both challenging and natural.

Obstacles ranged from steep hill

climbs, and tarpaulin sheet walkovers, to narrow bridges over creeks. Spectators watched from shaded areas as riders cracked stock whips, opened gates, jumped logs, dragged branches and posted mail from their horses!

The Beginners class saw Heidi Mehlhopt and Charmaine Bloomfield from Methven take the first two placings. They are both active competitors in Barrel racing, but this was their first Challenge. Science Alive visit Selwyn Libraries each term, offering local children the opportunity to get hands-on with fun science experiments and activities. In March they will be visiting local libraries to talk about bats and their amazing abilities.

The sessions run at Lincoln (March 14th), Leeston (March 15th), Rolleston (March 16th) and Darfield (March 21st).

A gold coin donation is requested per child to assist with Science Alive’s visit costs.

Family Easter Storytime sessions also run at all libraries during March.

Selwyn District Council met on Wednesday 24 February and made the following key decisions: ALTERATION OF DESIGNATION DESIGNATION FOR ROLLESTON SCHOOL The Council has approved an alteration to the existing Ministry of Education designation for Rolleston School. The alteration provides for an additional 5,086 square metres of land, recently purchased by the Crown for the school. The expansion was sought due to recent and anticipated growth in pupil numbers, with the current facilities considered insufficient to accommodate the expected growth. Further development on the land will be subject to the Council considering an Outline Plan which will provide details of buildings, landscaping, vehicle access and parking, as well as a traffic management plan for the whole school site.

PROGRESS ON DUNSANDEL DUNSANDE L COMMUNITY CENTRE AND WEST MELTON COMMUNITY CENTRE CENTRE The Council received updates on the proposed Dunsandel and West

Melton Community Centres. Both projects are scheduled to go out to tender over the next two months, with tenders for the Dunsandel project closing in late March, and for the West Melton facility in mid-May. Council staff are continuing to work on the detailed design process, building consents, supporting the project steering committees with external fund raising, and keeping local communities informed on the projects. Cost estimates for the facilities are $3.18m for Dunsandel and $6.6m for West Melton. More detailed costings will be known once tenders are confirmed. Funding for the facilities will come from various sources including reserves funds, Council grants, other grants and community fundraising.

SMOKEFREE POLICIES The Council has endorsed the goals of Smokefree 2025 – a government initiative that aims to make New Zealand essentially smoke-free by 2025. Following a presentation by Cancer Society

health promotion manager Martin Witt, the Council resolved to endorse Smokefree 2025, work with other organisations to further reduce smoking rates in Selwyn, and update its Smokefree policy. The Council has had smoke-free policies in place since 2011, encouraging the community to refrain from smoking in public outdoor areas, especially playgrounds, parks and sports grounds, and at Councilsupported events.

INTERNAL AUDIT SHARE D SERVICES ASSESSMENT The Council has approved participating in a pilot project which will see consultants undertaking a business process review of fraud policy, conflicts of interest, and sensitive expenditure, involving up to 20 councils across the South Island.

The Council noted that the review will allow for the sharing of good practice among the councils, and would be more efficient than undertaking the audit work on an individual basis.

Sheep dairying is garnering increasing attention as a sustainable and economically viable farm system option, however, there have been few opportunities to find out information on which to make investment decisions. This has resulted in a two-day workshop being held on March 18th and 19th 2016, in Canterbury.

From 12.45pm on Friday, March 18th, a range of specialists will discuss the benefits of sheep milk, and factors impacting on sheep dairying in Canterbury; markets, economics, husbandry.

The venue is Lecture Theatre C1 in Lincoln University’s Commerce Building. The following day, Guy and Sue Trafford will host an on-farm workshop at their Charing Cross Sheep Dairy, near Darfield. This will provide an opportunity for people to look at a dairy under development, examine sheep type and other practical farming considerations.

The cost is $125 per person.

This includes morning and afternoon tea and lunch and a BBQ on the second day.

The 2015 Potential for Diversification of Rural Production in Canterbury report, prepared by The AgriBusiness Group on behalf of Canterbury Development Corporation (CDC), identified sheep dairying as one of the options for land

diversification in Canterbury, especially as the Central Plains irrigation scheme opens up land to new and different land use options.

Nationally, there are approximately 35,000 dairy sheep milked, with ewe’s milk being made into a range of artisan products like yoghurt and cheese, as well as exported as milk powder. Interest is growing following changes in the economic performance of other land uses and from the success of Blue River in Southland and Landcorp’s investments in the North Island.

The Trafford’s believe there is strong potential for the industry to develop in Canterbury. They have been involved in farming for more than forty years, mostly in the North Island, but started developing Charing Cross Sheep Dairy in 2012. They now have a 200 ewe flock and farm development is well under way with commercial milking occurring in September 2016. They have established a supply chain for ice cream and yoghurt with a successful Canterbury processor.

“We are talking with about eight or nine other parties in the region that are considering it themselves. Obviously there is a significant financial investment needed, but this could be a real game changer for many people,”

Guy said.

This is an unique opportunity to hear from a wide range of experts including the Canterbury Development Corporation, Food South, Guy Trafford, Lincoln University farm management lecturer and sheep dairy farmer on the economics of sheep dairying, Ian MacDonald, MacDonald a genetics specialist, and Dr Haim Leibovich, Leibovich an Israeli small ruminant specialist. Israel has a sophisticated sheep dairy industry.

Last Tuesday (February 23rd), Canterbury Charitable Trust Community Energy Actions (CEA) celebrated 21 years of the Curtain Bank initiative with some forty community organisations.

Curtain Bank is a project that recycles curtains donated by the public and gives them away to households who cannot afford to buy them. The curtains help to keep homes warmer.

The Curtain Bank was one of CEA’s first projects after the establishment of the organisation in 1994. Apart from running a Curtain Bank, CEA also has an insulation service and independent energy advice service for households of all incomes. Subsidies may be available for low income households. People can be referred to the Curtain Bank through one of the many community organisations the Curtain Bank is working with or they can contact them directly.

“21 years later the Curtain Bank is still going, albeit on a completely different scale,” said Caroline Shone, Chief Executive of CEA. “Last year we helped 780 households, a new record in the Curtain Bank’s history.

Most households received curtains for multiple rooms.”

We still have volunteers helping us; we couldn’t operate the Curtain

Bank without them and are always looking for more, for sorting curtains that come in, helping with sewing, etc.”

Despite that, the Curtain Bank still experiences a waiting list in winter, so people who need curtains are advised to contact the Curtain Bank sooner rather than later.

The Curtain Bank is proudly supported by Genesis Energy and also receives funding from the Lottery Grants Boards. A substantial amount of the Curtain Bank expenses are covered by the Trust itself.

Virginia identified that part of language learning is being willing to try, and that can be embarrassing. “I have already told the women who came to the classes last year, about my most embarrassing language glitch. I, at least only used the

wrong word with a tutor, not out in public. But without trying out words in a safe place, you don’t always capture nuances of language.”

In Virginia's classes she aims to offer a safe place to try out new words, practise sentences, ask questions, gain vocabulary, and laugh about the craziness of the English language.

In the Malvern Judd Cup competition South Malvern were too good for Kirwee, winning by 110 runs.

Shannon McAleer, McAleer James Ferris and Andrew Inch all went past 50 to help post the good score.

In reply Kirwee were rolled for 110 with Michael McCaughan grabbing four wickets and Bodie Hawkins three.

Malvern teams travelled to Cobden Green to compete in the West Coast Ladies Bowling tournament. The first day of the tournament, held on February 16-18th, was played in near perfect conditions, but the weather was not so kind to the team on the following day.

The games had to be postponed as the torrential downpour of rain had saturated the green and the rain just kept coming!

This didn’t dampen the women’s enthusiasm and the ladies eventually made it through to the consolation play offs and were delighted to qualify from this to the semi finals. Unfortunately, the final game could not be played as the skies opened again and once more, rain flooded Cobden Green. The two skips agreed to finishing first equal and sharing the prize.

The Women’s Pairs ended with three teams on seven wins. It was decided that Beverley Dillon [s] and Helen Hurndell would play Maureen Robertson [s] and Ana Gooch 1st and the winners play Dianne Westaway and Betty Henderson.

After a close game in high temperatures, Maureen and Ana were the winners. The afternoon game was a well deserved win by Dianne and Betty.
