Organisers were elated with the huge turnout of competitors at the Sheffield Rugby Club’s inaugural Mountain Bike Race, held on Sunday, February 21st. In attendance were 96 mountain bikers, ranging in age from 15 through to 66 years old. All were keen to conquer the challenging 25 kilometre course through the picturesque Canterbury Plains. Event organiser, Tom Ferguson explained that the event would not have been possible without the help of their sponsors, land owners and volunteers. “We very much appreciate the help of Candace McGirr, Joost Kepers and Grant Hunter for their first aid skills, along with the culinary skills of our ‘barbecuers’ - they were excellent. There are so many people to thank for making this event possible and I appreciate every single one of them,” he said with a grateful smile. The event was an outstanding success, with all proceeds going directly to the Sheffield Rugby Club, to foster young players and keep the Club’s tradition alive. Thanks to the generous sponsorship arranged, every participant went home with either a competition, or a spot prize - ranging from jet boat rides and pub dinners, through to frozen chickens.

Siona Collier first prize-winner in the Women’s Open class. There was a very competitive line-up at the start. Mike Smart took out the fastest time overall in 1.15 hours and the fastest woman was Siona Collier, Collier who fittingly received her prize from the major sponsor, Matt Collier of Farmlands (her husband!). Results: Mens Open: Mike Smart 1.15 Over 40: Jason Blair 1.17 Over 50: Nick Carter 1.21 Over 60: Pete Somerville 1.25 Womens Open: Siona Collier 1.27 Over 40: Jo Forbes 1.31 Over 50: Glenda Ryan 1.29 In the Rugby Club section the competition was tight between

Darfield and Methven Clubs, until high-performing Darfield representative Warren Thomas got two punctures and lost the lead to a competent Methven rider, Marty Cuttle in 1.27 hrs. Tom has confirmed that following the popularity of this one, there will definitely be another Sheffield Mountain Bike Race next year.

“What a great turn out we had! The weather gods turned on a brilliant day with not a breath of wind - plus there was a great sense of pride and accomplishment, along with very tired legs! We are definitely looking forward to organising the race again next year.” Tom concluded.
