Local teenager Seth Clark is off to Spain for a three month stint with CF Cracks Academy (CF Cracks is a football training academy and club that also plays in the local football league in Valencia Spain and is a feeder club to numerous professional clubs). Seth hopes to improve his football skills and realise his dream of playing football professionally.

Fifteen year old Seth, previously attended the Academy for two months in 2015 and is excited about the opportunity of

returning to Spain and training under the guidance of their prestigious coaching staff.

"I couldn't have got this far without the help of Mum and Dad, they have sacrificed a lot and I owe them heaps." Seth said.

Seth who lives in Darfield and plays football in Christchurch for FC Twenty 11, has also represented Selwyn in age grade tournaments.

"We are excited for him and are looking forward to watching his progress while he is away."

Congratulations to all those locals who competed in the Coast to Coast and the Buller Marathon over the weekend. A colossal amount of planning, hard work and commitment is required to undertake these events and to achieve completion of them is definitely an accomplishment. Three local athletes did exceedingly well in the Coast to Coast with their efforts securing them fourth place in the three person team category. Stephen Bennett from Halkett (left), Jock Truscott (middle) from Kirwee and Chris Thwaites from Hororata, together made up team ‘Truscott Building’. The triumphant trio were thrilled with their high placing and described the day as challenging, but fantastic to be a part of.

A good gathering of mainly local folk were present at Tarling Common, Whitecliffs on February 8th to attend the launch of Richard and Bruce Maffey’s Maffey new book, ‘The Industries of the Malvern Hills’. The site of the restored Whitecliffs’ Station was most appropriate for the launch as the companion volume, ‘The White Cliffs Branch Railway’ had been launched at the restored Homebush Station building in Darfield, on Waitangi Day 2015.

The event was made extra special due to the presence of two direct descendants of James Ford, Ford early settler of the South

Malvern township and proprietor of the Ford & Ogdon Potteries there (1876). Malcolm and Jamie Ford were able to visit the site and original house, built by their great-grandfather and also the Glentunnel Museum, where a model of the potteries made

by Malcolm Ford had been donated. This has become a real drawcard for the museum, helping to interpret the history of the potteries in the area.

Travelling down for the day for the occasion from Whangarei

and Orewa respectively, they were absolutely delighted in a memorable time well spent in a beautiful part of the country. As Jamie commented, “we wouldn’t have missed it for the world!”

The sincere hope of the authors, is that this completed work will highlight the wealth of history pertaining to the South Malvern area and its one-time importance to Canterbury preserving it for future generations.

In days gone by a well attended dinner such as this would have been held inside the Church.

For anyone who’s an avid viewer of British television’s home restoration and renovation programmes, this would be the opportunity of a lifetime. The historic St James’ Church at Sheffield (along with the newer adjoining hall and the plot the buildings sit on) are, after more than one hundred years, being offered for sale.

The attractive church, built in weatherboard but now roughcast over, still retains many of its original features and those that have been modified could be restored. The church celebrated its centenary in 2010.

In October of 1902 the General Committee recorded in their minutes the need for a Church in the Sheffield – Waddington area. Having already acquired £60 in the building fund and with twelve Presbyterian families in Waddington. Mr John Deans promised to make a section available in either Waddington or Sheffield. In the meantime services continued at Waddington and Annat Schools.

The St James Presbyterian Church was opened on Thursday, March 3rd 1910, with two ministers officiating in the inaugural service, to the accompaniment of the new

St James’ Church at Sheffield - an opportunity to create something unique and individual. church organ.

It was reported that: “The day was marred by the South West storm but in spite of the rain the Church was quite full. A luncheon followed in the Sheffield Hall and the evening’s entertainment of songs and recitations was to a piano accompaniment.

Speeches concluded a wonderful day.”

Numerous (and often entertaining) events took place in and around the church; from the first wedding in 1915 (the son of the organist and the pianist), to the new gate posts donated by John Deans in 1910, before one was subsequently demolished by the Reverend of the time in 1941. To add insult to injury the minister was driving his brand new car, just collected from its delivery at the Railway station. New gates were then

erected by the congregation with concrete wings! In the ensuing years the community donated many and varied items to the church - some, like electric lighting addressed the necessities, while others were perhaps less functional and given in memory of relatives passed.

In 1957 the foundation stone for the concrete block St James’ Church Hall, behind the church, was laid, with the structure dedicated in 1958. Built by Hewitt Builders of Darfield the building accommodated numerous church groups and Sunday school sessions over the years. The impending sale of the Church, its adjoining Hall and the site they sit on, has already attracted considerable interest for further details see the advertisement in this issue.

It’s now easier and closer to get banking done in Selwyn as the ANZ celebrated the opening of its new branch in Rolleston on Friday, February 12th.

ANZ recognises Rolleston as one of the fastest growing areas in New Zealand and the Bank’s presence there is a real vote of confidence in the future of the town, which has seen strong migration since the earthquakes. “We have closed the Main South Road branch, but customers in that area are still served by the same friendly staff who have moved across to ANZ Hornby,” said Jonathan Ahlfeld, ANZ Business Banking Manager at Rolleston.

“Rolleston is a fantastic place to live, and has a thriving business community too,” he added.

The opening ceremony was attended by about 25 people, including local Selwyn MP, Amy Adams, Adams the Deputy Mayor of Selwyn Sarah Walters, Walters Selwyn District Council CEO David Ward, Ward local councillors, business leaders, developers and staff.

Amy gave a speech welcoming the addition of another bank to what is becoming a hub of banking around Rolleston Square. “The opening of the ANZ branch is reflective of the significant growth in both the residential and business population in Rolleston and the greater Selwyn area during recent years,” Amy commented.

The design of the branch is the same as that used in Cashel Mall following the earthquakes, and in other locations around New Zealand to great success.

A new writers network is being formed in Selwyn to support aspiring and established local writers.

The first meeting of the Selwyn Writers Network is planned for Wednesday, February 24th (6.30 – 8.30pm) at Lincoln Library.

“There are a number of established writers in Selwyn, as well as many people who are interested in writing or would like to gain more knowledge and skills,” commented Rachael Inch, Selwyn Arts Co-ordinator/ Advisor.

“The networking evening will present a number of guest speakers from a range of writing genres who will talk about their experiences and offer advice to other writers. It’s a great opportunity for people to get to know other local writers and join a new network which offers support and advice.”

“The feedback has been terrific - we even had one super excited customer who started dancing when she walked in because it saved her a fifteenminute drive to the nearest branch,” Jonathan smiled. “The team is really looking forward to meeting the local community. I am a Rolleston local and I know how much it means to Rolleston to finally have New Zealand's largest bank in the community.

Celtic folk singing group, Kilmarnock Edition will grace the Darfield Baptist Church with their energetic presence on February 26th. This is an exciting opportunity to see a truly entertaining and wellpracticed band. The kilt clad musicians are famous for their legendary harmonies, instrumentals and humour.

Kilmarnock Edition was established thirty years ago and they have not looked back.

Their popularity grew as audiences spread word of their vocal and musical skill, along with a fun Celtic style. The group’s name is derived from the first edition of Robert Burns’ works, which was published in Kilmarnock, Scotland. This first edition was viewed by critics as beginning on a satirical and humourous note and moving into a more serious tone throughout, all the while focussing on the use of provincial Scottish dialect. This is certainly reflected in the Kilmarnock Edition’s repertoire; they offer a Scottish and Irish experience which ranges from sincere performing, through to the humourous, with audience participation strongly encouraged from start to finish.

The group’s guitarist, Dayle Hadlee is likely to be well known to many, having had a brilliant

Dayle’s singing is featured in the group’s lighter humourous songs, and he adds a tenor harmony which is complementary to his instrumental skills.

Dayle is not the only celebrity; Brian Ringrose has had a diverse musical career, following his mastery of the flute and guitar at a young age. Because of his guitar skills, along with his ability to read music, Brian secured a position with TVNZ. He was employed by the television network for about twenty years playing in shows like McPhail and Gadsby, Opportunity Knocks, Telethons,

Big acts like Eddie Low of the New Zealand Country Music Hall of Fame will be entertaining the masses, along with many other kiwi ar sts such as Maggie Ruddenklaw, Amelia James, The High Street Blues Collec ve and Willie McArthur. Holly is an ambi ous young musician from Hororata. She has been playing guitar since primary school and started singing four years ago. Having danced in compe ons since age four, Holly loves being on stage and entertaining. She can play anything, anywhere and has an extremely adaptable voice.

Summer Sounds Methven is a Charity event with dona ons accepted at the gate. Money raised will go to the development of the Methven Aged Care facili es in memory of the late Allan ToOy.

Brian produced two of the original Kilmarnock Edition’s CDs, ‘From Far Horizons’ and ‘On Distant Shores’, which have received favourable reviews both locally and internationally.

These will be on sale after the concert.

The others in the band - David O’Beirne, Julian Anderson and Murray Compton all have impressive musical and/or vocal credentials, performing with some of the most esteemed choirs in the country.

This much anticipated event is unquestionably a rare opportunity to share the experience of a bona-fide Celtic folk band in the company of the local community.

The group features mainly Sco sh and Irish songs, both serious and amusing, with audience par cipa on welcomed.

After thirty three years in its current location, Gnomes Alpine Sports announce the forthcoming opening of their brand new store, in time for the 2016 ski season.

Gnomes are committed to retaining their presence in Darfield and so in May 2016 their new store, only 400 metres from their current one and at 26 South Terrace, opposite the Z service station, will open.

After twelve months of careful and extensive planning the purpose built development, now under construction, has been designed and modified to Gnomes’ specification and on completion will be 50% larger than the current shop. This makes it the biggest ski specific store and rental centre in Canterbury, and a central hub for skiers.

Gnomes are merging their current two outlets (Darfield and Yaldhurst) in the new flagship premises at the new location. By merging the two stores Gnomes can offer an even higher level of service, lower rental prices and faster processing times, while always retaining quality rental equipment. The new rental centre will be able to cater for the hire requirements of large groups, such as corporate or schools.

Darfield is on the fastest route to all Canterbury ski areas from Christchurch and the last chance to make the final decision on which direction to take. Highway 73 heads to Porters Ski area, as well as the Craigieburn Range club fields, or turn off on the western edge of the township onto Highway 77 to get to Mt Hutt.

The Hororata Parish is once again running a fun bike/run/ walk event. This year the event will be held at a different venue than previously. It will take place at Middle Rock Farm on Sunday, February 28th. The day provides an opportunity for people to access private farm tracks with a range of distances, from six kilometres to twenty kilometres, offering something for all ages and fitness levels.

“Although the event we held last year was washed out by rain, we still had a good turn out and a lot of feedback that people were looking for a recreational outing like this,” explained Hororata Parish Vicar Jenni Carter.

“The day gives people the opportunity to get off the beaten track with a choice of distance and discipline. Cyclists, runners and walkers all share the track which allows families to go together with children biking and parents walking/ running if they choose. There is no set start time as long as you are on the track by 2pm, meaning a stress-free start to the day.”

“For those who like to challenge themselves the twenty kilometre track has some great terrain which will provide excitement mixed with beautiful scenery.

The short tracks still give great views, but are a little easier, with only a few climbs and no difficult terrain to navigate.”

Middle Rock Farm is in the Lake Coleridge basin, fifteen minutes from Windwhistle. The 4WD shingle tracks wind their way through the farm and provide breath-taking views overlooking the Rakaia River and into the heart of the Southern Alps.

Tenancy Inspections SELWYN DISTRICT COUNCIL MEETING: FEBRUARY 10TH – KEY DECISIONS

Public Transport Committee for Greater Christchurch - The Council agreed in principle to form a greater Christchurch Public Transport Joint Committee with the other members being Environment Canterbury, Christchurch City Council and Waimakariri District Council.

Foster Park - The Council has changed the name of Foster Recreational Park to Foster Park.

An advisory committee will also be established to guide the park’s development made up of key user groups of the park.

Special Reserve Funds - A review of 167 special reserve funds held by the Council was undertaken. Some funds are historical and have been inactive for some time, while others are currently being used for specific purposes. The review includes information on how each fund originated, the purpose and intended use of the fund, who can authorise the use of the fund, the fund balance, and recommendations on the future use of each fund.

February 27th will see Mike Ransome of Hartleys Road in Whitecliffs, host an exci ng new equestrian sport which is taking New Zealand by storm.

The ‘Cowboy Challenge’ involves a series of obstacles designed to push both horse and rider beyond their comfort zone and ul mately, test the horsemanship of each rider. Mike will host a beginners class sec on at the event to encourage the inexperienced to give the Challenge a go. This includes a large training paddock which has been separated from the compe ve course so riders can try out various obstacles, such as barrels, gates, bridges, tyres and much more.

The compe ve obstacles range from a simple bridle removal and halter fi ng, through to more demanding tests such as creek crossing, ravine rides and riding through brush. Compe tors will be allocated thirteen obstacles out of a possible sixty plus, that will be available on the day and will have 45 seconds to complete each task. The rider will not know which challenges they have been assigned un l the day, which will allow judges to rank the partnership and communica on aspect between rider and horse.

The Challenge is governed by the New Zealand Cowboy Challenge Associa on (NZCCA) which was. formed aNer the first Cowboy Challenge held in Geraldine in 2010. The NZCCA does not organise events but regulates, maintains points and provides an official rulebook, as well as giving administra ve assistance.

Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade only missed out on securing first place at the South Island Waterway Challenge final by just two points.

The final, held on Saturday, February 13th in Methven saw Darfield firefighters compete in a gruelling, hose running and pump operating competition.

Eight two-person teams and seven four-person teams from as far away as Bluff and Richmond competed in the South Island United Fire Brigades’ Association Waterways Challenge at the Methven Domain.

The Darfield team, led by newly appointed team captain Bryan Thomas, Thomas had some great results throughout the competition at the Provincial level and as an invitation team at Blackball and Clyde earlier this month.

Unfortunately, this was not

enough to stop Mossburn Volunteer Fire Brigade edging out Darfield by just two points to secure the top place for the two -person category, while Greymouth Volunteer Fire Brigade celebrated a first placing in the four-person category collecting a massive 92 points.

“An average effort in the morning meant a huge effort was required in the afternoon”, Darfield Fire Brigade’s Chief Fire Officer, Alan Kittelty commented.

“Despite Darfield winning all the afternoon events the team from Mossburn were deserved overall winners, with a more consistent effort over the whole day,” Alan added.

The dynamic Darfield team will now have another year to focus and hone their skills ready for next year’s Waterways Challenges.

It was in the winter of 119 years ago (1897) that four acres of land was purchased for £10 per acre from a Mr Walshaw for a new site for yards and a dip in the small township of Sheffield at the foot of the Malvern Hills. This was the beginning of the present site of the Sheffield Saleyards Co Ltd. The yards are an iconic fixture in the township and on Friday last, at the annual sale, a total offering of 18,500 ewes were all sold, with 120 rams also up for sale. The sale proved to be a record in the history of the yards.

In the late 1890’s minutes show that in one year, (with frequent sales) up to 43,000 sheep, 154 cattle, 15 horses and 112 pigs were sold and up to 21,000 sheep were dipped.

It is also noted that in 1914 an auction was held for Artillery Horses, for the Expeditionary Force. They called for: Half to ¾ Draughts; must be active, aged 5-8 and broken to harness. No Greys, Duns or Light Chestnuts Purchased.

Nowadays the yards are only used for the sale of sheep.

The recent sale had an outstanding line-up of ewes from local shareholders, along with vendors from across Canterbury. The line-up covered all breeds and ages of ewes and a smaller number of rams.

The top price of the day went to a pen of Two Tooth ewes at $182, Mixed Age Ewes $132, Annual Draft Ewes $116 and the top Ewe Lambs went for $110.

With dwindling sheep numbers in the Canterbury region since the dairy boom, a meeting was held five years ago to determine the future of the yards. However shareholders, locals, stock firms and trucking companies all voted in favour of retaining the facility, as many other Canterbury saleyards had ceased operating.

The Sheffield yards are well supported each year by the shareholders, local farmers, the local school (who put up the gates each year), by the Stock & Station Companies and trucking firms. Along with a large team of church ladies who supply a wonderful morning tea

While the earthquakes s ll rock Canterbury, the Province will pause to reflect on a poignant milestone on Monday, February 22nd as it commemorates the fiNh anniversary of the February 2011 quake.

The Governor-General, Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae and Lady Janine Mateparae will aSend the civic memorial service to offer support and encouragement for the future.

The service will start at midday on Monday, February 22nd at the Botanic Gardens Archery Lawn and include a minute's silence at the me of the earthquake 12.51pm.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel said, "this is an important event for the Christchurch community to not only reflect on what happened the day of the earthquake, but also to look at how far we've come. We are honoured to have the Governor-General aSend the commemora on service, especially as it is the fiNh anniversary."

Some of the families who lost loved ones in the earthquake and people whose lives were changed by serious injury will aSend the event, as well as representa ves of the emergency services. Some families are travelling from overseas to also be there.

The civic memorial service is a community event and everyone is invited to aSend.

Rebekah Siame, the founder of social media tool Get Behind It, hopes Kiwis will create a virtual flash mob with her "Shake the Net for Christchurch Earthquake" campaign that aims to support quake-hit Cantabrians.

She wants New Zealanders to post a message on their Facebook, TwiSer and Tumblr walls at 12.51pm on February 22 - the me the earthquake hit in 2011, killing 185 people.

New Zealand’s ultimate rural takes place at seven regional challenge, now in its 48th year, locations around the country FMG Young Farmer of the Year, starting this month. In the lead up to these seven Regional Finals over 250 Young Farmer hopefuls have battled it out across 24 District Finals for a spot in their region’s final.

Included in the Tasman Regional final, to be held at Oxford on April 2nd, are Willis Ritchie, Alan Harvey and Karl Dean, Dean representing the Dunsandel Young Farmers Club. Following this regional final the field will be narrowed to a single representative from each region to compete at the Grand Final in Timaru from July 7th-9th, 2016.
