The Darfield Community Fun Day, held on Waitangi Day (February 6th), attracted an impressive number of attendees. The event, organised by the Two Rivers Community Trust and with funding support from SDC and Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust, was a wonderful way to kick start the long weekend. Numerous stalls provided everything from homemade treats, through to fairy wings and pirate things. Compere and member of the or g an i s i ng gr o up, S a m Broughton was delighted with how the day went, even the weather came to the party with a sunny and warm day, despite the forecast predicting otherwise. Entertainment began
with Manaia Davies singing a spine tingling rendition of the national anthem, reminding all in attendance of the importance of togetherness on this Community day. This was followed by further performances from Manaia, showcasing the progression of hip hop from the 80’s through to today, via song and dance. The little ones had much to keep them occupied with 6,000 Lego blocks to play with, bouncy castles and classic games such as, three-legged and sack races. Crazy bikes from Pedalmania were a huge hit with both children and adults alike. Suitable for all ages, much fun was had on these strange pedal-powered contraptions.

Darfield Primary School began the year by welcoming two new teachers to their team. Karen Burt, who has taken up the Deputy Principal position in the Junior School, is an experienced teacher and education leader who has transferred from Ashgrove School in Rangiora. Karen has begun the year with Lynda Selwood who was a colleague of hers at Ashgrove. Lynda will also be teaching in the Junior team this year. On Tuesday, February 2nd, Darfield Primary School visited Darfield High School and participated in their Mihi Whakatau which was organised to welcome new staff and students to Darfield High School. Darfield Primary School supported this celebration as Manuhiri - leading the Year 7 children into the school hall. The Mihi Whakatau was a symbolic hand over with the Year 7 students saying good bye to their primary school friends and moving forward to their new adventure at high school.

It’s time to dust off the running shoes and start preparations for what is bound to be another enjoyable, Malvern Fun Run. In previous years, this event has been a fundraising success for Darfield Primary School and provided a wonderful way for people to meet local families, and this year will undoubtedly be the same. The event will begin at the Darfield Recreation Centre at

Organisers were positively jubilant to see so many families at the Springfield Community Fun Day on Sunday, January 31st. Attendees had a fantastic day with many activities to choose from. Event organisers offer a huge and heartfelt thank you to the ‘Summer of Fun’’ initiative in conjunction with the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust (CEAT), who funded the event. They would also like to thank all the staff who gave up
the last day of their holidays to come and mix and mingle with the school community. Face painters, ice cream servers and barbecue helpers also made the event a roaring success for all involved. The fun occasion was an opportunity for parents and children (past, present and future students) to share a day before the new term started and form new, as well as re-establish old, friendships.

Courses aimed at helping mature drivers gain skills to be safer on the road are being offered to Selwyn residents between February and April. As in other areas of New Zealand, the number of Selwyn motorists over the age of sixty is expected to increase in the future. Selwyn District Road Safety Coordinator Ngaire Tinning commented that these courses are a fun and easy way for residents over the age of sixty to refresh their skills and look at alternatives to driving. "We are really pleased to be able to offer these free courses and workshops with support from Age Concern and our volunteers. All of these activities have proven very popular and valuable in assisting people to continue to drive safely on our roads." Selwyn District Council and
Age Concern offer the Confident Driving Course to help older drivers remain confident on the road and encourage an increased awareness of the traffic environment and other road users. It is designed to be thought provoking, informative, enjoyable and informal. There are no tests
or exams and participants will receive a certificate of attendance. Morning tea and lunch is provided and bookings are requested. Three Confident Driving Course courses will be held at Leeston, Lincoln and Darfield (February 15th) and are available free to Selwyn residents.

The Darfield Bridge Club held a social half hour at the beginning of their club night on Monday evening for the Club’s Patron June Parsons. Parsons June, who was one of the original members of the Darfield Bridge Club, has always been a strong supporter since becoming involved. “We are all sorry June has decided to retire and will all miss her charming smile,” said Pam Duncan speaking on behalf of the Club. June however, isn’t giving up her Bridge completely and she plans to continue playing Wednesday social bridge with a group of friends. “T he Darfield Members sincerely wish you well June,” Pam concluded.

WHITE TAIL SPIDERS The white tail spider is an Australian invader which originates from Sydney. Congratulations are in order for Glentunnel resident Nic Kelly, Kelly who has been appointed Head Coach for the inaugural National Netball League (NNL). The NNL is a development or ’second tier’ competition that underpins the ANZ Championship in New Zealand and is being run for the first time this season. “It aims to expose development netballers that are believed to have the physical and mental attributes, as well as the commitment and effort levels required, to make it as a professional netballer,” Nic explained. “The competition mirrors the training schedule and demands of the ANZ campaign with the goal of preparing potential netballers and bridging the gap from development to professional netball. Games will be televised on Sky TV either as curtain raisers or after the main game.” Nic has always had a passion for sports and has been coaching netball from the age of sixteen. Her dedication to sports saw her accepted into the Otago School of Physical Education which was instrumental in her gaining the scientific knowledge base required for coaching. Nic moved to Glentunnel three years ago when husband Todd, Todd secured a job at Darfield High School. Since then, numerous local Clubs have benefitted from her coaching expertise, including Tactix Train On Group, Mainland U23, St Nic’s Premier team, Malvern Netball Centre, South Malvern Club, Darfield Primary School and the Future Ferns. As an experienced Physical Ed uc at io n a nd Outd o o r Education teacher, who has excelled in both playing and coaching netball, Nic’s skills are the perfect match for her new role as Head Coach for the NNL team. “As a School PE teacher you are expected to coach teams/sports. I have coached netball, basketball, canoe polo and mountain biking over the years. Then I moved more into teaching Outdoor Education, which is about personal and social development and team building, plus learning to get your head around being uncomfortable and dealing with anxiety/risk/skill development which is also key to coaching in sport.”

She describes her new challenging role as including; “co -o rd inating all team management - assistant coach, m an ag e r , str e ng t h an d conditioning, physiotherapy, life coaching, sport psychology and nutrition. This involves putting together a long term plan, coo rd inating d ay to d ay implementation of the plan, gathering information on athletes and assisting them to achieve their potential (which is individual based on needs), as well as coaching up to four times per week. A head coach has to have their finger on the pulse with everything, deal with anything and everything.” Nic is supported by an assistant coach also with a local connection. Lucy Newton grew up and began her netball career as a player in Malvern with the Springfield/Sheffield Club in 1996 before transferring to Darfield in 2004. She also captained the DHS Senior A team in her final year. By 2006/07 she was playing netball in Christchurch, both Club and U17 representative level. Lucy first coached for Darfield Netball Club in 2005 and followed this with two years coaching of the Malvern Primary Rep team. Prior to this new appointment Lucy was the Christchurch Girls’
High School senior coach and Christchurch Netball Centre under age team selector and coach. Though both Nic and Lucy’s roles require a lot of hard work, the reward will be watching team members transition and progress on to playing professional netball.

While the popularity of mountain biking events is on the rise it doesn’t appear to have detracted from the number of entries in established running events like the Buller Marathon. The marathon is one of the longest running walking/running races in the South Island and will celebrate 34 consecutive years when it takes place on February 13th. Last Friday, Kirwee Rugby Club held their first night of Rippa rugby with youngsters arriving en masse along with numerous siblings to support and encourage from the side lines. Numbers far exceeded the Club’s expectations. “This was an awesome result considering it's still the cricket season and school had only just gone back after six weeks of holidays,” said one of the organisers. Kirwee Rugby Club Rippa will run for the next four consecutive weeks and children intending to participate are asked to be at the Kirwee Rugby grounds by 5.45pm (games kick off at 6pm). Teams are divided into age groups, with all abilities most welcome. “It's a great way to integrate those younger ones that have
never played before and get them used to running with a ball in hand and play in a team environment. It's a safe noncontact game, allowing players to get used to running into a space, communicating to other players, passing the ball and above all, having fun.” R i pp a ga m e s r u n f o r approximately thirty minutes; or until players are tired. All games are refereed by Senior Club players, with parents encouraged to help out during the game. After the games, there’s a sausage sizzle to enjoy, with the Club bar open to quench the thirst of young and old.
