As readers enjoyed their Christmas break and languidly flicked though the daily newspaper, or read news online, they would have been very pleasantly surprised to see a Malvern local, amongst the recipients of a Queens Service Medal in the New Year’s Honours. None more surprised though than the recipient, Ian Warren himself. He commented, “I was very surprised to receive the award but it was a nice surprise. It is an honour to be recognised and I think it reflects on the organisations that I have been involved with. In particular the Malvern Health and Community Welfare Trust which provides a very good service to the area, with both its District Nursing and other activities.” Ian was involved with the
establishment of the Trust and has been their chairman for 21 years. He was actively involved in contributing to the opening of the Darfield Medical Centre in 2014, piloting an aged care day centre, establishing an annual scholarship for tertiary health studies and was the Co-ordinator of the Selwyn/ Waimakariri Consultation Health Committee. The official award citation reads, ‘for services to health and the community’ and Ian has been involved extensively in a wide ranging variety of community initiatives: • The Selwyn District Council’s City Scheme with Japan hosting adult and school exchange groups. • He has also been involved with the Council through Neighbourhood Watch and Civil Defence.

The organisation also celebrates neighbourliness and consistently works toward uniting a community, which the Darfield Summer of Fun so perfectly achieves. There will be a variety of stalls at the Summer of Fun Community Day, with a focus on hand-made goods; ranging from home-made baking, women's/ children's clothes, art and jewellery to plants, food/ beverage vendors and much, much more. Through-out the day there will be live music supported by local talent. Teenagers will be encouraged to test their sporting abilities and participate in the touch competition. Children, will have a wide variety of fun activities provided for them; from face painting and bouncy castles to egg and spoon races, and a petting zoo, to name but a few. Additionally, there is plenty to keep the lads
entertained in the form of a cabin building competition which will put the participants building skills to the test. There will truly be something for all generations of the family on Waitangi Day, with many displays on offer including, spinners and weavers, indoor bowls, crazy bikes from Pedalmania and much more. Guests are invited to attend a lunchtime picnic; with the option of bringing their own food or p u rc h a s i n g a d e l i c i o u s Devonshire tea or sausage from the BBQ stall. This wonderful community day is definitely an event not to be missed. Prior to the main event, a scarecrow trail will be created giving locals a chance to vote for their favourite. This will start a week before the fun day and voting forms can be obtained from Darfield Library, Mason’s Drapery or Malvern Butchery. SELWYN LIBRARIES The annual Summer Reading Challenge returns to Selwyn libraries. This year’s theme is ‘Get carried away with books.’ For the challenge, children need to read eight books from Selwyn libraries and write a small report or discuss their reading of four or more of the books with library staff. Children are encouraged to read a wide range of material including books, magazines, eBooks, non-fic on, and audiobooks. Once children have completed their report-ins to library staff, they will receive an invite to the surprise Celebra on Finale party on Saturday, January 30th. Releasing balloons at Camp Quality: Signifying rising above your problems with a little help from your friends. This year saw Malvern Lions were again involved with another successful Camp Quality Christchurch, event. The Summer Camp, held at Living Springs, Governors Bay has been fortunate on a number of occasions over the years, to spend a fun filled day at Kowai Bush. This annual week-long camp is for children living with cancer and is packed with activities where fun and friendship are combined with achievable challenges. This allows the children to have a sense of normality and independence and focus on the positive aspects of their lives. A number of businesses, along with the Malvern Lions, donated their time and services to make the summer Camp as entertaining as possible for the children. This year Greg Peacock from Alpine Jet provided breath-taking jet boat rides for the children, and personnel attached to Darfield
Fire Brigade also got involved by offering rides on the fire engine and interacting with attendees. The thrills did not end with jetboating and engine rides though, the children were also able to ride along the riverbank terrain, with members of the Darfield 4WD Club. Kowai Bush based Trevor and Heather Taege generously provided their time and a venue for a day of the Camp. Without their generosity and the input from Malvern Lions, the Kowai Bush day would not have been possible. Families of campers also benefit by having a much needed break. For many parents it is the first time their child has been away from their care, since diagnosis. They are grateful to have th e support and understanding of people who know what they are going through. Families put their complete trust in Camp Quality and their child’s designated
companion. The organisation offers a structured and well resourced training programme for ‘companions’. Each child is matched with a fully trained companion who cares for, stays by, and interacts with, that camper 24/7, while at the camp. The qualities of aroha commitment, enthusiasm, generosity of spirit, respect and integrity are at the heart of companion training. The Camp Quality Christchurch logo is a balloon which embodies the physical action of being able to rise above challenges, with help from friends. Together, the children prepared and released their balloons at the start of Camp to signify their hope for the future. Over the busy two terms leading up to Christmas, students from Greendale, Hororata, Sheffield, Springfield and Kirwee Schools made the time to come together and form a combined schools’ Kapahaka group. The local pupils met weekly under the guidance of leader Aaron McLean to learn about waiata and actions, together with the formalities of Kapahaka and Noho Marae. Aaron placed as much emphasis on the importance of learning about mutual respect and teamwork as he did with the movement aspect of the group. Both being facets of equal importance in delivering a synchronised performance, as well as encouraging the personal growth of students. Aaron achieved this by creating a fun

Approximately 450 children, around 160 families and a large group of Preschool children, in an organised visit, took the opportunity to visit ‘Santa’ at the restored Darfield Jail, in the lead up to Christmas. While it was the same smiling Santa’s representative throughout, he was assisted by varying Malvern Community Board members. All children received a small gift and adults enjoyed free entry into a Christmas raffle, which was able to be offered with the support of local businesses. “We are so grateful and appreciative of this support,” said Malvern Community Board chair Jenny Gallagher. Gallagher “The appearance of Santa at the Jail was extremely well received and we think we’ll make it an annual event,” she added. Photos were able to be taken, on families own devices, by those accompanying the children, ensuring it was a cost-free event for those attending. Six week old Brockton Kerr (pictured) was the youngest attending on the day, but Santa had also had the pleasure of wishing a merry Christmas to a little, one week old baby, just a few days prior.

Motor Home and Caravan Owners: Recently work was completed on a ‘Dump Station’ located on the North Terrace boundary of the Recreation Reserve. Selwyn District Council (SDC) opened the new facility just before Christmas - in time for the busy summer season. SDC worked on the $20,000 project with the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association, which provided the aboveground infrastructure, including the connections for the dump station, at no cost to ratepayers. John Allen, Resource Management Assistant for the Canterbury area of the New Zealand Motor Car avan Association commented that this was a good step in providing a much needed facility to support the many motorhomes that visit Selwyn District. “Darfield is a central location in Selwyn District so there was a real need for a dump station at this location,” he added. “We are very pleased to have worked with SDC to provide this station for campers and also encourage

The tank holds 10,000 litres and is able to collect a minimum of 600 deposits. The single point of collection makes it easy to access and will help to prevent waste being dumped into public toilets or into the environment. Other locations in Selwyn where campervan owners can dispose of their waste include the Rakaia Huts Camp Ground, Southbridge Domain, Rakaia Gorge and
Glentunnel Camping Ground. Playground Upgrade: Exciting new Playground equipment is shortly to be installed at the Recreation Reserve, along with an additional Netball Court to be laid on the site of the old Playground. Work is already underway removing the existing Playground equipment, while laying the new Netball court surface will start in early February, along with the upgrading of the Playground area.

The Darfield Plunket and Toy Library committee are thrilled to be organising their very first family event. The group’s Teddy Bears’ Picnic is to be held on the Darfield Primary School fields - Sunday, February 24th, from 10am -1pm. “As this is the committee’s first family event, we are really looking forward to meeting some more Plunket families, of all ages,” said Ainsley Bell, Bell one of the event’s organisers. “Families are welcome to come along and enjoy the range of activities we’ve got planned. There’ll be a free bouncy castle, face-painting and biscuit decorating and we are also overjoyed to have secured Enchanting Entertainment (check them out on Facebook). They will not only be facepainting and story telling, but also leading the Teddy Bears’ Parade.” Tag Coffee will be in attendance

A cold southerly day did not deter folk from attending the Malvern Collie Club’s field day, held at Annavale station on January 10th, by kind permission of Reece and Mel Cleland. Cleland Dogs and handlers had access to some excellent sheep to test their skills at hunting, heading and starting a young dog, plus members of the Collie Club were on hand to offer advice and demonstrate dog training tips. The field day was held to offer encouragement to young handlers and give other competitors a chance to let their young dogs ‘have a go’ before the trial season commences. New Zealand. With access to a valley several kilometres long, and an abundance of reactive steel targets, Enrico (Harry) Hoover figured out a way to enable 100+ shooters to participate at the same time. So the ‘Jungle Lane’ concept was born. The idea is for shooters, in squads of four, to follow a track through fields and forest (the jungle lane), stop at one of the thirty shooting positions along the lane, find the appropriate target(s) in the distance and try to shoot them. All the targets are reactive, ie, they all do something when hit. Innovative and entertaining - some swing, some have flashing lights when hit, some allow for multiple shots and some are for precision shooting. There are moving targets, falling targets and many more. All shooting is toward one side of the lane only and no one needs to leave the lane to go out to the targets, as all scoring is done from the shooting position. The event has been set up with safety and fun in mind, and while great for new or inexperienced shooters, there is also challenge enough for the more experienced. Young people or new shooters are able to learn basic firearms skills under totally safe, but fun conditions, as only one person in each group can shoot at a time. That person can be coached or guided by an experienced or licenced shooter. The four people in each squad take turns at being,
Range Officer, Spotter, Scorer or Shooter. Following multiple requests from the South Island, an event was planned for February 2016, at Ben More Station, near Springfield. The skill level required will vary from basic to difficult, with the furthest targets at distances not normally shot at by .22 rifle shooters. The event has also been set up to be suitable for disabled shooters to participate. There will be a good range of prizes and trophies, with an evening meal supplied at the end of the day. Shooters can expect to be out in the field for a full eight or nine hours of shooting fun and will need to come prepared, with all the food and drink they will need for lunch, snacks, etc. A flush toilet is onsite. Springfield School PTA will be catering for the event as a fundraiser, with a great evening meal to look forward to at the conclusion of the day. “Part of the facility we are using is the Canterbury Shooting Club's range at Ben More station,” Harry said, “and in conjunction with the Jungle Lane event, they will be holding an ‘open day’. This will allow members of the public to ‘have a go’ at pistol shooting. It may also be possible, for anyone interested, to shoot some rifles too,” he concluded.

The Malvern Material Girls, who meet fortnightly in the Darfield Library held a raffle just before Christmas to raise funds for the Women’s Refuge. A beautiful handmade quilt was the prize and was on display at Mason's Drapery, as well as making an appearance at the Courtenay Show, in November. Group spokesperson Sharon Kellock commented that the quilt was made jointly by the approximately twelve member Group, using colourful Kaffe Fassett fabrics, mixed with various light greys. $300 was raised and the Group would like to thank all who bought tickets to support this essential charity. The very pleased winner of the quilt was Joy Haylock of Rolleston, who purchased her ticket at the Courtenay A & P Show. She was thrilled to receive her prize before Christmas.

Fencing & Excavating Holidaymakers have been enjoying a more comfortable visit to Whitecliffs this summer, following the upgrading of toilets at Whitecliffs Domain. The old toilet block has been demolished and replaced with a new modular system that will better serve campers and visitors to the Domain. The new facility uses the same modular system as the toilets in Darfield and Springfield. The toilets were manufactured off site in Gisborne, installed onsite in eight days and opened for use just before Christmas. Graeme Wilson, Wilson the Council’s team leader of Property, Facilities and Open Space, said
the facility is a significant improvement on the old block. “The new toilets are vault systems, using holding tanks, so there is now no discharge to land - this is a huge improvement in regards to odour control and potential contamination of waterways,” he said. “They are a high quality product with robust stainless steel fittings, easy-clean tiles and wall finishes and durable concrete walls and roof.” Graeme added that the former toilets were a basic concrete block structure and in need of replacement. Issues included a water l eak, which was discovered when the old facility
was demolished, and an old septic tank system with a failing disposal pit. The total cost of the new facility was $125,000 which included the demolition of the old toilets.

Entries are now open for Selwyn District Council’s Back to School colouring competition. Over 8,000 children are returning to school in early February and the Council is running a colouring competition to remind children, and their parents, to be careful when walking and biking to school. As well as getting folk to remember that extra vehicles will be on local roads between 8am and 9am and 3pm until 4pm, especially around schools. The competition is open until 5pm Friday, February 12th and entries will be judged in three age categories: 5-7 years, 8-10 years and 11-13 years. Prizes include colouring-in packs featuring activity books, felt tip pens, colour pencils, and crayons. Selwyn District Council Road Safety Coordinator Ngaire Tinning said the competition will help children and their parents think about how they can get to school safely and to remember and use road rules. “We want to

2015 Club Fours Winners: Peter Bickley (Skip), Derrol Fitzgibbon(3rd), Norm Dunlop (Lead) and Allan Sadler(2nd). Centre competitions were completed before Christmas with some good results for West Melton teams. The 3x3’s team playing in Division 2 won the competition by a clear margin. The Junior Fours qualified for post section of the Division 2 finals, but unfortunately were knocked out in the first round. This was a very good effort from the Club’s junior bowlers, with some only in their first or second year. Congratulations go to Keith McMeeking, McMeeking Mark Dobbin and Alistair Wilson who were selected to play for the Malvern Juniors. The Malvern Open Singles Men’s final was played between West Melton’s Bob Burnett and Ray Hunt from Darfield. It was a very close and exciting final with Bob emerging victorious. On December 4th, Norm Dunlop, Dunlop Colin Walsh, Walsh Ross Sadler and Malcolm Calder played in the Oxford Fours. They played well as a team and went through unbeaten to win the tournament. The Club Championship Fours was played over two days on December 12th and 13th with congratulations going to Norm Dunlop, Allan Sadler, Sadler Derrol Fitzgibbon and Peter Bickley(s) Bickley who won all five games, to win the championship. Congratulations also to Bill Wilson, Ken Sharplin and Colin Walsh(s) who played consistent bowls, throughout the competition, to win the Men’s Club Championship Triples. It was a credit to the West Melton green keepers, Ross Sadler and John Pearce, Pearce that

Thanks go to Norm and Brenda Dunlop for organising the night and to Mike Leigh (piano), Keith McMeeking (drums), Mike’s friend John (bass), and to singers Malcolm Calder, Al Douglas and Anna Gooch - it was a really enjoyable night.
