The Tara Marshall Dance and Fitness Studio welcomed family and friends to their annual, end of year show, held at Villa Maria College, Christchurch. The Show, held on December 13th was an outstanding success with an audience of around 280 attending. There were over one hundred dancers involved in the event and as always, the dancers thoroughly enjoyed performing in the show that they work so hard toward. This was especially true for the very excited little ones who had their first time on stage. Students showcased dancing in jazz, hip hop and contemporary styles and they ranged from the age of three years up to advanced students. Continued on page 12....

The St John Darfield Youth’s end of year prize giving was held on December 9th. The St John Youth programmes are split into two age groups with the Cadets being the largest of the two. These programmes are for all young people aged eight to eighteen. Cadets are grouped into various levels for training, competitions, events, camps and even social activities to suit their individual goals and abilities. There are numerous mixed activities which give senior Cadets a chance to take the lead and step up as role models for the junior Cadets to aspire to. St John Darfield also runs ‘Penguins’ for six to eight year olds and there were plenty of smiling recipients from both groups at the prize giving.

Anyone heading into the city during December or January should make the Bryce Gallery on Riccarton Road a destination. Their Summer Collection - An All Artist Show opened on Saturday and contains two works by talented local artist (and News staff member) Chevonn Walker. Walker Nineteen year old Chevonn attended the exhibition opening

and while admitting she was blown away by the enormity of the Gallery and the variety of the exhibits, was pleased to note that her two pieces were startlingly different from the rest. “I felt the majority of other works fitted into the category of being more abstract and free flowing, rather than the intricacy of my work,” Chevonn

commented. This is the first ‘exhibition’ Chevonn has had work accepted into, although she has sold many pieces online, or by word of mouth. Her dad, Brian, approached the Gallery and showed them some of her work, and they welcomed her to exhibit in the now-open exhibition. Chevonn, who was educated at Darfield High School, where not only did she study art, but was also the 2014 Head of Culture, commented that a picture such as those in the exhibition (mixed media works done in acrylic and shellac) would take around six or seven hours to complete. Chevonn definitely has an unique talent for this intricate style of painting - something which the Gallery recognised when inviting her to join them. Chevonn’s works in the current exhibition are for sale.

The team at The Canterbury Mini Motocross Club welcomed a very special guest to their Christmas party, held on December 6th. Santa’s presence at the event certainly provided a lot of fun for the young riders and their families. The Christmas party was held on Deans Road, near Darfield and began with riding in the morning - mixed classes of Mini team relay races. Mums were not left out of the equation either - with the young ones having a giggle when they took to the track on a variety of bikes, for a race of their own! Entertainment also featured a bouncy castle, games and BBQ, - all the elements needed to create a fantastic, fun-filled day for the whole family.

Last Friday, December 11th, Hororata Domain resounded with children’s laughter as quite a crowd gathered to attend the Hororata Playcentre’s end of year Christmas party. The event was attended and greatly enjoyed by fifteen children and their families. Highlights of the morning included a special visit from Santa in a big red fire engine to hand out presents, along with flavoured milk provided by Fonterra. The Playcentre would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Hororata Volunteer Fire Brigade and to Roger Parsons for red-suited services! Earlier this month, on December 3rd, Darfield Plunket Parents Group held their first dessert evening. The night was a roaring success, with almost thirty attendees enjoying a relaxed and very social dessert evening at The Terrace Winebar and Restaurant. Event organiser Ainsley Bell commented, “it was lovely seeing some of the mums come along who had met each other previously at the new mums’ Plunket coffee mornings (which Ainsley also organises). To see their friendships continuing and developing

makes bringing these events to fruition, all the more worthwhile. “The Darfield Parents Group has been set up to help parents in the area connect with other parents and this event was definitely a great starting point.” There was much brainstorming over the delicious desserts, with one event concept being brought to a reality in January when the Teddy Bears’ Picnic will take place (see article and advertisement in this edition for further details of this). There was also much discussion about the possibility of a wine tasting

tour and a walking group definitely watch this space! The dessert evening was even responsible for recruiting another two volunteers to the committee, “which was fantastic,” Ainsley added. Ainsley is passionate about organising events which bring the community and its families together. “We hope to see as many families as possible make the most of having this Teddy Bears’ Picnic event held locally, so do tell your friends and family to meet you down there,” Ainsley concluded!

Wow! Where has 2015 gone? As Christmas approaches it has been a time for the staff, children and families to reflect and celebrate the exciting developments which have happened at Darfield Preschool & Nursery throughout the year. With the help of members of the community and the generous sponsorship of local businesses the Preschool has made some major improvements. Darfield’s Trinity Church is being adorned again with an Advent Calendar being painted on its windows for a second year. Advent Calendars are used to count down the days to Christmas in the season of Advent and were first developed by German Lutherans in the nineteenth century. The most common ones here and overseas were made of paper or card with 25 little windows. A window is opened on every day in December and a Christmas picture is displayed underneath, until Christmas Day is reached. When they were first made, they displayed scenes from the Christmas story of the birth of Jesus. In Darfield, at Trinity Church on the corner of SH 73 and Bangor Road, the month of December began with 24 empty picture frames (instead of doors) painted on the north side of the church. Each day a new picture is painted on the window by a volunteer painter. This year volunteer painters came from Darfield, Hororata, and Sheffield with the youngest so far, only four years old. The Christmas story as told in the

Gospels of Matthew and Luke is being portrayed in the paintings, along with the occasional window that explains the significance of some of the items and symbols in use at Christmas. Viewers will also find the stories behind why there is carolling, or mince pies, St Nicholas, and angels or stars on the top of Christmas trees, interspersed with the story windows. The painted windows will remain on the church until January 6th, the official end of the Christmas season (which of course is twelve days long hence the song: The Twelve Days of Christmas).

Windwhistle Year 6 students were delighted to present the Champion Centre with a $600 donation on Thursday, December 10th. The Windwhistle ambassadors raised and presented the funds to the Centre themselves and the donation will be used towards the playground area. The local young fundraisers were also afforded a rare opportunity to visit the Centre, receiving a guided tour before helping out with the Christmas party. The Champion Centre is an early intervention centre for special needs pre-schoolers and is a sanctuary for both the children and their families. The staff consists of around sixty specialist teachers who provide a safe, nurturing learning environment, with each child on an individually tailored programme, to meet their specialised needs such as cerebral palsy, Down's syndrome or autism. The Centre is only partially Government funded, so relies on donations and they were extremely grateful to Windwhistle School for theirs.

giving, and of course there is Santa and all those presents that we look forward to opening and enjoying. But let’s not forget the real reason for Christmas. In the Bible, they recorded stories (testimonies) of all the great things God did and retold them generation after generation. All his mighty works, the signs and wonders and the demonstration of his power. So that no one would forget who he was and what he had done, lest they fall back into moral decline and the consequences that come with that. Sadly we read again and again how those testimonies were not passed on, and the outcome was the repeated decline of a nation. So God decided to do something new. This time he sent his own Son. A Saviour born in a manger. People say history has a habit of repeating itself over and

over, but let’s see if we can retell the reason for Christmas and pass it on to the next generation, lest they also forget. Our children enjoyed Santa until they grew. We have always celebrated the giving of gifts and our special time with family and friends. I really enjoy Christmas and all the fun times it brings, but I never want to forget the true reason for Christmas. I enjoy telling people about my Saviour and the testimony of all he has done for me and the many others that I know about. Brian Davidson Chairperson of the Friends of Darfield Hospital and Marge White (Patron) at the opening of the wonderful garden gazebo sited in the Hospital grounds, and toward which the proceeds of last year’s Christmas fundraiser were attributed. On Sunday, November 29th, The Friends of Darfield Hospital held a Christmas Trail, which featured several homes suitably decorated to celebrate the festive season, along with some beautiful gardens. About two hundred people participated, with in excess of $2,300 being raised. Together with the proceeds from their recent Christmas Raffle, and by using other funds raised earlier in the year, the Friends have been able to purchase a neoprene Dry Flotation Mattress for the hospital. This mattress will provide for the extra comfort and treatment of patients with specialised needs. The Friends wish to thank everyone who has supported their recent fundraisers, all those families who offered their properties for the Christmas Trail, Jo McIntosh (Bayleys Real Estate) their major sponsor, and the numerous businesses who sold tickets on their behalf. “We are also grateful to the Rural Mail Contractors who helped with the delivery of advertising flyers,” said Friends spokesperson Brian Davidson, “and to Darfield Pharmacy for hosting our Christmas Raffle.” The end of the year has also seen the completion of another

It’s been another year of extraordinary growth for Selwyn with all the challenges and opportunities that it brings. On behalf of the Councillors and myself, I would like to thank all those who have supported us and Council staff in the many activities undertaken during the year. A special appreciation and thanks to all the volunteers that work in, and support, our community. As I write this on a hot northwest day I’m particularly thinking of the volunteer fire brigades as we look to be going into a hot dry summer. Fires are caused by a number of reasons so take care

with whatever you are doing, let’s not make any extra work for them. Volunteers all contribute so much to the wellbeing of our community and ensuring Selwyn is such a wonderful place to live, work and play. Christmas is a time to share friendship and goodwill with our family and friends, and recognise the true treasures in our life as we care and share our values and ideals with others. Douglas also added that where fire fighters respond to unnecessary callouts because people have lit fires when they are not allowed to, or haven’t followed fire safety guidelines, it is appropriate that the person who started the fire should pay for this cost. If the cost of responding to the fire is higher than $1150, a higher charge may be imposed

Douglas said that it is important for all property owners to have insurance which covers fire damage, fire fighting and public liability insurance. “Property owners who light fires when restrictions are in place will often say they didn’t know about restrictions. Currently Selwyn is extremely dry and people need to exercise some common sense and not light fires in these conditions.” Douglas concluded that people should also always check what fire restrictions are in place by visiting www.selwyn.govt.nz/fire or phoning the Council before considering lighting a fire.

The Community and Public H ealth division of the Canterbury District Health Board have issued a health warning after potentially toxic blue-green algae (benthic cyanobacteria) were found in Selwyn/Waikirikiri River at the Whitecliffs Domain and the Selwyn River at Coes Ford. People and animals, particularly dogs, should avoid the area of the Selwyn River at Whitecliffs Domain and Coes Ford until the health warning has been lifted. Dr Alistair Humphrey, Canterbury Medical Officer of Health, said the algae look like dark brown to black mats and can produce toxins harmful to people and animals. "Exposure may cause skin rashes, nausea, stomach cramps, tingling and numbness around the mouth and fingertips," Dr Humphrey said. "If you experience any of these symptoms, visit your doctor immediately, also let your doctor know if you’ve had contact with dark brown/black algal mats or water in these areas." The Selwyn District Council as the drinking water supplier are following agreed procedures to ensure their reticulated drinking water supplies are safe. People and animals should remain out of the waterways until the warnings have been lifted. "Pets should be taken to a vet immediately if they are showing signs of illness after coming into contact with algal mats." Environment Canterbury is monitoring the sites and the public will be advised of any changes in water quality, Dr Humphrey added. Facts about cyanobacteria: • Appears as dark brown/ black mats attached to rocks along the riverbed

but can increase rapidly during warmer months • It often has a strong musty smell and algal toxin concentrations can vary over short periods with changing environmental conditions • Although high river levels will remove the algal bloom, detached mats can accumulate along the shore and increase the risk of exposure to toxins. River users are advised to avoid these areas, in particular, where mats are accumulating onshore.

If a health warning is in place avoid contact with the water. Although district or city councils may place warning signs, these may not be seen at the numerous river access points, hence the need for people/ dogdogwalkers to treat every low -flowing river cautiously.

Christmas is approaching rapidly as it always seems to do and 2016 is just around the corner. Darfield is about to have a fully functional Rural Fire Force. The Darfield Volunteer Rural Fire Force (RFF) has been in the formation process since September and is nearing finalisation. Before the Firefighters are able to be fully active members of the RFF they must complete a minimum of two unit standards. Douglas Marshall, Civil Defence Controller at Selwyn District Council explained, “prospective volunteers are required to complete at least two units to be accepted into the RFF. This ensures that they have the skills and safety training required to deal with vegetation fires.”

There are a number of other unit standards that are able to also be completed by the more ambitious of the bunch including, Rural Fire Officer training which allows the participant to manage their own team upon completion and helicopter training could also be an option for some. While Volunteer Fire Brigades (VFB) assist on all types of emergencies, the RFF’s specialist training will see them primarily focussed on vegetation fires. The RFF also use ‘Smokechaser’ utes which are bright yellow instead of the traditional red used by the VFBs. These amazing vehicles

are able to carry 200 litres of water, tools and other sundries, but are mainly used as a crew carrier. The utes are made of lighter materials than the traditional fire trucks which allow them to access challenging areas quickly and efficiently. Eighteen participants from the Darfield area went through more training three weeks ago in Rolleston, along with four from Lake Coleridge, three from West Melton and eleven from the District team. Al Hutt of Selwyn District Council, has the task of training participants and will continue to offer ongoing support to the team once operational early next year.

At Christmas, perhaps you are doing one of two very common things that take place at this time of year. I’m speaking of course of the number of refugees around the world who are fleeing from violence, war, drought, or who simply have been told that they must leave their land or homes, and leave now. They are refugees,

packing without much notice and leaving everything behind. Or they are volunteers working in refugee camps and getting ready to receive another influx of new refugees, new people to care for, new mouths to feed, new homes to find. Jesus who is born in Bethlehem, himself a refugee when he and his parents had to flee to Egypt to escape from King Herod for a while, spends a great amount of his ministry speaking about welcoming the outcasts, extending kindness to strangers and even enemies, and recognising the value of every human life, regardless. On a lovely warm sunny morning we held our Christmas do at the home and garden of Club member Cynthia Bishell. The house was decked out with Christmas trimmings and a beau ful Christmas tree in the hall, it looked very fes ve. Neville was kind enough to set up two gazebos to provide shelter from the sun and there were ample chairs to make ourselves comfortable. On arrival, members were welcomed with a celebratory drink, before tucking into a delicious lunch, which was followed by a selec on of mouth watering desserts. You needed strong willpower to resist too many helpings as there was a temp ng selec on of everything sweet, s ll it is Christmas! A walk round the garden was supposed to burn off a few calories but there were too many interes ng aspects to look at, so the pace was a bit slow. The garden was laid out in a park like se ng with lawns and trees and large shrub filled beds. To the rear of the property was a very respectable veggie garden and Cynthia's own nursery where she pots up her plants. Around the house were garden rooms with trellis’ and stunning white roses. ATer the walk we were ready for a coffee and Christmas cake and the drawing of the raffle, which was well received, as always. Thank you to everyone who has opened their gardens to us over the year and a big thanks and Happy Christmas to the team at the News for their ongoing support. PEACE ON EARTH U2 released a song called ‘Peace on Earth’ in 2000 following the Omagh Bombing in Northern Ireland. It’s a ballad imploring the intervention of heaven on earth, and I sense that every generation has had such a cry. As I read or watch news, I often wonder, “when will these wars and this pain and conflict cease?” An angel announced Jesus, the Saviour’s birth, with these words, “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people.” And angels sang together, ”peace on earth” (Luke 2.10; 14). It’s easy to focus on the big conflicts. But the peace more likely intended includes that …, and a harmony in our everyday relationships of parents, children, siblings and neighbours leading to a life of peace with each other. It points to personal contentment and peace where we are not striving,

It was a close game, played on a good pitch (grass) at Greendale. Greendale made 121, with L. Bragan and D. Crequer, the youngsters, again batting well, and making the top two scores. Southbrook 122/6. J. Clayton and H. Jebson opened the bowling, and each claimed two wickets. Haigh Jebson is another promising youngster, and continues to go from strength to strength. It was a fine effort by Greendale, as they were missing four of their leading players. This competition will resume on January 23, 2016.
