Ashy Batchelor (of Whitecliffs) auditioned with the producers of Christchurch’s Christmas in the Park, back in August. She was picked to be one of the main singing teams at the Christchurch show and sang a duet of ‘White Christmas’ with Stevie Tonks at the event, held last weekend, along with a Mariah Carey number and ’I Really Like You’ by Carly Rae Jepsen. Jepsen “It was a privilege to work on such a great show, sing in front of so many people and work alongside Stan Walker, Walker Vince Harder, Harder Lavina Williams, Williams Esther, Esther Stevie, Nyree, Nyree Marley, Marley Ben Lumis and Shaun,” Shaun Ashy said. Ashy was also selected as one of the ‘Top 10’ solo artists in New Zealand, at the 2015 SmokeFree RockQuest recently. She continues to write her own music and in the next twelve months would like to apply for NZ on Air funding to record some of these tracks. After much deliberation following the receipt of applicants’ CVs and an extensive interview by a panel of Courtenay A & P office bearers, the award convenor, and a Matson and Allan representative, this year’s young achiever was named at the recent Courtenay Show. The 2015 Matson and Allan Young Achiever’s award went to Martin Skurr of Sheffield, a choice made all the more difficult for selectors, due to the high calibre of applicants. Educated at Christchurch Boys High School, 28 year old Martin comes from a farming family and has achieved Diplomas in Farm Management, as well as another in Agriculture, from Lincoln University. He is married to Georgina, Georgina who is a nurse locally, and the couple are expecting their first child in a few months. He lists his personal hobbies as tennis, squash, fishing, and a particular inherited interest in old cars. Martin’s ability to use both time honoured farming methods, coupled with new technology was recognised by the Award panel, and this along with his desire to increase his farming business and create employment, so impressed the selectors it gained him the Award. Martin is the managing director of, and a shareholder in, Riverview Farm 2013 Ltd - where he grew up and has worked, for many years. He also is a shareholder in Grafton Farming Co Ltd, which leases dry land at View Hill. “I am driven to grow our business to a point where we are a sustainable resilient business, that is big enough to employ one full time worker,” Martin commented. Beginning in 2013 Martin has been involved with the implementation of a major irrigation development and land use change. The first step was the setting up of an informal group, ‘Terrace Water’ to gain early access to irrigation water. The group uses a Selwyn District Council's (SDC) water race to transport Central Plains Water Limited (CPWL) water. Getting the system up and running involved negotiation with SDC to use the race, and with CPWL, Ecan and Fish and Game to use their water. Riverview Farm now grows a large and diverse range of seed crops, as well as finishing lambs and grazing young, dairy stock. Meanwhile,

Martin Skurr, recipient of this year’s Matson & Allan Young Achiever’s Award. Grafton Farming is involved with sheep breeding and finishing, dairy grazing and beef trading. The two companies share a full-time staff member. Martin has had extensive farming experience not only on local properties, but also overseas in both Australia (seeding and harvest) and Scotland. He has also worked for local company Draper Contracting covering all aspects of baling and haymaking. In 2014 Martin undertook the role of convenor, grain and seed for the Malvern A & P Association’s Show. The Matson and Allen Young Achiever Award, which was first set-up in 1992, has been presented to a number of young people in the area, all of whom have shown outstanding results in a variety of arenas. While the age limit was initially set at 21 and briefly extended to 35, it has now settled back at 30 years of age. All those applying for the award must live locally within their A & P association catchment. The award is open to all industries and lifestyles and previous winners have ranged from farmers to pre school teachers, retail business owners to mechanics. Martin was understandably pleased with his success and the News congratulates him on his win.

Gary McCormick, New Zealand’s favourite radio presenter and one of the most sought after speakers and conference MCs in the country, is returning to Selwyn for ‘A Christmas Crack Up’ on Sunday, December 13th. Usually found paired up with his partner in crime, Mayor Tim Shadbolt, Shadbolt for tours of hilarity up and down the country; Gary has made a run for it and is providing a solo evening of quick wit and humour in the beautiful and local, setting of Melton Estate winery. Gary has been roaming the highways and by-ways of New Zealand for some thirty years as a poet and an observer of New Zealand life. He has expressed his comical observations via many mediums including, the ‘Heartland’ and ‘McCormick’ television series, numerous television documentaries, including ‘Raglan By The Sea’, which won the Documentary of the Year Award, and ‘The Bad Boys’. Writing and poetry have also been an outlet for many a one liner from the now 64 year old. Notably, Gary has also been a gardener, surfboard manufacturer and merry-goround operator! Last Saturday’s Darfield Playcentre market day was an outstanding success. The weather was perfect and the large number of people attending enjoyed the variety and number of stalls available. Face painting, the bouncy castle and definitely the barbecue were also a hit. The market was a very successful fundraiser which was just reward for the hard work and effort expended by the organisers. These same organisers extend a huge thank you to all the people who came and supported them, the stallholders, Burger Revolution and its staff, as well as to Val
McKenzie for donating an amazing Christmas Cake, which was sold as a fundraiser. Most importantly thanks must also go to the family and friends of Playcentre who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help with the organisation of the day and make it the success it was.
“Hopefully the community enjoyed the chance to buy locally and start their Christmas shopping,” said Ainsley Bell, Bell one of the organisers of the event. “Colin Colin Lee was the winner of the ‘Guess the Lollies in the Jar Competition, guessing the exact amount of 383 jellybeans!”

Glentunnel School’s pet day and cake auction, held on November 12th, was a roaring success. It truly was a well organised group effort from students, parents, teachers and sponsors who managed to raise $2,700 for the school. Glentunnel students, Charlie and Steven sent The Malvern News their summary of the day: “Glentunnel School had a pet
day. There were judges that judged decorated shoes, musical instruments, handwriting and pets. There were all kinds of pets: dogs, cats, fish, frogs, horses and sheep. There were also stalls with lots of goodies organised and made by the students such as sherbet, fudge, popcorn, sausages, bliss balls, rainbow jelly and lemon cordial.” Collaborating this summary with further feedback received from attendees confirms that a wonderful day was had by all involved. Glentunnel school extends a huge and heartfelt thanks to all the sponsors who assisted with this event - their support was very much appreciated.

The ‘pocket-sized’ orchestra of five radiated their love of jazz despite this being the twenty fourth out of a gruelling schedule of twenty five concerts over five weeks, from Northland down to Gore, and back to Canterbury. All the musicians showed their skill in solo spots. Miho, Miho the flute- and saxophone-playing leader, not only played flawlessly, she always reflected the playfulness, joy or sensuality of the music in her dancing. Pascal’s energetic electric violin was featured in almost every number, and attracted the particular interest of local music students, Leigh and Ellen Walters, Walters after the concert. Andrew on guitar, Jared on drums, and Eamon on electric bass added an essential

Sunday, November 29th was the start of a whole new chapter in Ashlley McIntosh’s life. The grand opening of her new Salon, Bloom (which is situated next to Johnny Fresh in Horndon Mews, McMillan Street, Darfield) was attended by an excited crowd that streamed in throughout the afternoon. There was a glass of bubbly and nibbles upon arrival and all present appreciated the modern, light and welcoming décor. As welcoming as the smile that greeted them all. The first twenty appointments booked were lucky enough to receive a beautifully presented goodie bag, packed with samples, vouchers and more. Ashlley, while admitting to being incredibly busy all day, received a huge amount of positive feedback about the event. “Everyone loved the decor and we're all excited now that I am up and running and open for business. It has been hard work, but incredibly rewarding to get to this stage.” Working towards completing the salon in time for the grand opening was a joint effort and Ashlley expressed gratitude for all the support and the work done by her family. “They have been amazing and it wouldn't have been finished in time it if wasn't for their time and skill,” she stressed. Ashlley was also overwhelmed and extremely grateful for the

A new daycare centre is opening in close proximity to the airport but it does not accommodate little humans - it is specifically designed for dogs! Geoff Bowers has always had a passion for dogs, “they have always been a part of my family’s lives,” he explained. A former police dog handler and previous owner of the K9 pet range, Geoff sold his business, along with his ten acre lifestyle block in Kirwee to fund his ‘Kuri’ daycare centre dream. A daycare specific to both the dog’s and their owner’s needs. “This was no easy decision as we had some great friends and neighbours in the area,” Geoff reminisced. He has employed the services of local chiropractor, Dr Stefan Reiderer from Darfield Chiropractic who is as adept and experienced at treating patients of the four legged variety, as he is with his human patients. Kuri also offers a homeopathic service provided by Selwyn based Rhonda HamiltonHamilton-Cross with treatments to suit a pet’s individual needs. Geoff Bowers: catering to canines and their owners. Geoff has been working towards the doggy daycare concept for the past two years with the goal of educating dogs and their owners, as well as offering a range of completely independent services. His passion and enthusiasm for canines is contagious, “all the training methods Kuri employs involve teaching owners how to communicate with their dog/s, and just as importantly how a dog thinks. Dogs do not behave badly, they just behave like a dog, if they are allowed to.” The Centre is fully climate controlled, with segregated areas for different ages and sizes of dog and has an outdoor area. structured routine which is overseen by experienced handlers and even includes an afternoon snooze! Geoff has also brought his prior knowledge of pet food to the forefront of Kuri, “we limit owners’ confusion as we only offer two types of food; a large raw selection and two brands of biscuits. We only offer goods that customers need. I have seen too many people confused by excessive choice.” The next stage of the business will include funeral care, a larger ‘education centre’ and kennels for travelling pet-owners (about eighteen months away). A restricted fire season was introduced in the Selwyn district, effective from Mond ay, November 23rd. “The fire risk in Selwyn has increased over recent weeks as weather conditions have become drier so it is now appropriate to introduce a restricted fire season to reduce the fire danger,” said Selwyn Principal Rural Fire Officer Douglas Marshall. Marshall Under a restricted fire season, only gas barbeques, crop residue and rubbish fires inside contained drums are allowed in rural areas of Selwyn. There are a number of conditions which must be met before fires can be lit (see below). Any other fires can only be lit if a permit has been obtained from Selwyn District Council. Douglas commented that if people are thinking of lighting a fire, they should always check whether they can do so and what safety guidelines they must meet by visiting the Council website, www.selwyn.govt.nz/fire. “Over summer people may see crop residue fires burning. Fire services are often called out to attend rural fires that are being supervised and managed appropriately,” he added. “It’s expensive and time consuming for volunteer fire fighters to attend false call outs so we encourage people to consider whether a fire is an
emergency before they dial 111. If there are people on site supervising the fire, a fire break and water on hand it is probably a controlled operation however if there is no one present, people should report this by dialing 111.” What’s allowed in a restricted fire season: In residential areas the only type of fire p ermitt ed throughout the year is a gas barbeque. Other fires need a r e s o u r c e co n s e n t f ro m Environment Canterbury. In rural areas in Selwyn in a restricted fire season the following rules apply: • Gas barbeques are allowed if a water source is nearby. In residential areas gas barbeques are the only type of outdoor fire allowed unless a resource consent has been granted from Environment Canterbury for the fire • Fires in drums must be covered with a wire mesh top sized no greater than 20mm or have a lid and flue with a spark arrester fitted. Only material that has had a minimum of at least a six week drying period may be burnt under Environment Canterbury’s Air Plan. The only type of materials that may be burnt according to these rules is dried vegetation, paper, cardboard
and untreated wood • A water source must be
nearby to extinguish the fire if needed and the fire may not be lit when strong winds are blowing or forecast • The burning of crop residue is allowed but only during daylight hours and must be attended at all times. Fires may not be lit when strong winds are blowing or forecast, fire fighting equipment and an adequate water source must be nearby and a ten metre firebreak must be cleared around the edge of the area to be burnt. New requirements are also in place under Environment Canterbury’s Air Plan which must be followed, a link is available on the Council website under www.selwyn.govt.nz/burning • Fire may be lit if a specific permit has been issued by Selwyn District Council and the conditions of the permit are followed. In the high country and hill areas of Selwyn, a restricted fire season is permanently in place. What’s not allowed: • Any type of fire not listed as permitted above – note that bonfires are not permitted • Fire cannot be lit on Council reserves - including Coes and Chamberlains Fords and Whitecliffs Reserve.

To the Editors: We have received texts and emails this month from the Council telling us that people in Selwyn have to conserve water and we are to water our lawns only at night. That seems reasonable at first glance, but I am just back from a trip to Christchurch and all the way in there are enormous irrigators blasting out our valuable water, much of which is blowing away in the wind. Even worse between Kirwee and the Aylesbury turn-off, the irrigator has been spraying water over SH 73 for the last five hours, at least. When people in the district see this happening it is hard for us to take seriously the fact that a few garden hoses should be turned off, but farmers are allowed to use the water in such huge amounts. Last Thursday the same thing was happening, it is not a one off event. We pay our rates and in return should be able to expect fairer treatment. Surely we should all have to conserve water.

Agrecovery is giving Darfield farmers another opportunity to recycle their empty agrichemical containers for free. The rural recyclers will be collecting at PGG Wrightson at 1 Ross Street on Wednesday, December 16th from 10am to 2pm. Despite not having a permanent collection site in Darfield, Agrecovery events in the town have collected over 5,500kg of container plastic in the last twelve months. This puts Darfield tenth in volume in Agrecovery’s national network. “Our Darfield events are very well attended, with large volumes collected at each,” commented Duncan Scotland of Agrecovery. “This next event will probably be the last one as we will be opening a Darfield permanent collection site in early 2016.” Canterbury features strongly in Agrecovery’s top ten sites, with Methven at number one, and Temuka at number seven. “Large-scale arable farming generates higher container volumes than typical pastoral farming, so it makes sense that Canterbury features at the top of the list,” explained Duncan. “What’s really pleasing is that Canterbury’s recycling volumes are growing faster than the national average. “Since Environment Canterbury’s 2014 ban on burning farm plastics raised awareness of the risks
associated with burning and burying, we’ve seen a real steep -change in recycling behaviour. “Plus, all the plastic we collect is recycled in New Zealand into new products, so increasing our volume is great in respect of recovering resources from what would otherwise be waste.” Recycling with Agrecovery is free for most container brands thanks to industry support from 64 manufacturers and distributors. “We really hope growers and farmers will throw their triple rinsed empties on the ute, grab something from the BBQ on site, and make the most of this opportunity,” Duncan concluded. Agrecovery in Canterbury: In addition to Darfield’s event, Agrecovery events are planned for Fairlie, Geraldine and Cheviot. These supplement Canterbury’s permanent

Home gardeners, lifestyle irrigators, small businesses, sports grounds and schools are being targeted as part of a new water-saving campaign by IrrigationNZ, local bodies and industry partners. The Smart Watering campaign teaches home gardeners and community irrigation projects how to apply water efficiently. Its wider roll-out follows on from the successful Smart Irrigation programme which encourages sustainably managed, accountable, responsible and trusted irrigation practice. Both need to know how much water their plants and crops require, have efficient systems for application and be monitoring soil moisture levels. The irrigation industry has proven products, technologies and practices that can eke out water supply. Members of the Darfield Garden Club have had a busy November, first our evening mee ng on the 17th saw a beau ful selec on of flowers entered for the compe on. We were then treated to some fun tutorials from experienced members. Margaret Seaton showed us the correct way of staging our flowers for compe ons, and then Anna Clarke demonstrated how to make arrangements, which this evening was a simple posy bowl. Members had already been invited to bring flowers to make their own arrangements and with Anna's excellent guidance, they were beau ful. APerwards many were then donated. On the 24th Jill Moore had arranged for us to take a day trip over to Oxford where we were treated to some special gardens in the township. Our first one was a deligh[ul coBage garden, not sure anything else could have been planted in the beds they were packed! The owners had created an arty feel all around the garden with wire sculptures; and for those who don't know what to do with broken china - just place it decora vely in your concrete garden paths. Our second garden, again beau fully kept, with great touches of design, using old farm gates and metal framing to espalier the fruit trees. Adding to this the personal touches of stone built columns, which enhanced the fabulous array of flowers and shrubs. In our third garden, protected from the front by a hedge needed to stop the Canterbury Nor' Wester - which we didn't no ce once behind, there were big Rhododendrons in full flower and a heavily laden Banksia Rose, which we bent low to get under to another part of this beau fully kept garden. We would like to thank the gardens’ owners for invi ng us into them, we had a lovely me and each of us took away an idea, or perhaps two. APer lunch in the beau ful sunshine, we went up to Cust to the formerly known as Roses of Cust, but now called Querky Style Garden Centre. S ll has all the roses to choose from, along with lots of other garden plants and art/giPs for your garden and home. Many members made other stops on their way home, but a great day was enjoyed by us all. Our next mee ng is our Christmas lunch on December 8th, at the home of one our members in Kirwee. Mick and Paddy had promised their Uncle Seamus, who had been a seafaring gent all his life, that they would bury him at sea when he died. Of course, in due me, he did pass away and the boys kept their promise. They set off with Uncle Seamus all s tched up in a burial bag and loaded onto their rowboat. APer a while Mick says, “Do yer nk dis is fer enuff out, Paddy?” Without a word Paddy slips over the side only to find himself standing in water up to his knees. “Dis'll never do, Mick. Let's row some more.'“ APer a bit more rowing Paddy slips over the side again but the water is only up to his belly, so they row on. Again Mick asks Paddy, “Do yer nk dis is fer enuff out Paddy?” Once again Paddy slips over the side and almost immediately says, “No dis'll neva do.” The water was only up to his chest. So on they row and row and row and finally Paddy slips over the side and disappears. Quite a bit of me goes by and poor Mick is really ge ng himself into a state when suddenly Paddy breaks the surface gasping for breath. “Well is it deep enuff yet, Paddy?” “Aye' s, now hand me dat shovel!”
