Last Saturday saw crowds thronging to the Kirwee Showgrounds to enjoy, compete, chat and greet, at the 140th annual Courtenay A & P Show.

The forecast for inclement weather may have kept a few potential attendees away as numbers through the gate were very slightly down from last year. However the predictions were incorrect and the rain didn’t eventuate, leaving Showgoers to enjoy a fine sunny day - albeit with a chilly breeze.

Show President Adrienne Begg laughingly stated early in the day that it wasn't going to rain on her parade, and obviously someone upstairs was listening! “Events on Show Day all ran smoothly,� reported Courtenay A & P Association secretary S h a r on K e l l o ck , “ an d competition was fierce.�

Needless to say, Sharon was taking a well-deserved break from duties this week, before planning and implementation tasks for next year’s event, get underway.

The Lab in a Box site and ‘The Bugman’ were definite hits

President Adrienne Begg with Catherine Wright, recipient of this years Royal Agricultural Society Medal which is awarded every three years. Catherine gained the most points in the Shed Section. amongst all, especially the younger members of the community, with Ruud’s display of bug handling prowess, impressive.

Showgoers took full advantage of the outstanding selection of stalls and trade exhibits and many were heard to say how much they enjoyed the opportunity of catching up with friends and neighbours in en joyable, con vivial surroundings.

D arf ield V olunt eer Fir e Brigade’s Chief Fire Officer Alan Kittlelty said he felt, “extremely happy and very honoured” upon his appointment to the position of United Fire Brigades’ Association (UFBA), Vice President. The announcement was made at the 137th Annual Conference held in Wellington on November 13-15th.

Alan joined Springfield Volunteer Fire Brigade in 1985, transferring to Darfield in 1990 and holding the position there of Chief Fire Officer since 2010.

He has many years experience in both governance and management roles and was a member of the UFBA Board from 2012-2014 and has served as President of

The Ellesmere Pipe Band provided one of many forms of entertainment - all were enjoyed immensely. Arion Farm and it’s petting zoo was a popular destination, and children not only learnt about the animals, but also gained a lot of pleasure from doing so.

Food aplenty, from varying sources, kept hunger at bay and youngsters enjoyed not only all the fun of the fairground, but also the freedom to roam with friends in a safe and friendly environment.

All in all the day can be chalked up by organisers as a huge success with everyone now looking forward to the next one!

Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigades’ Association. An advocate of strong leadership, he has been part of working parties and advocacy groups on behalf of the UFBA for a number of years.

Alan’s appointment as VicePresident coincides with an exciting time of change for the UFBA. “The Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon Peter Dunne announced at the annual conference that the Government has agreed to bring volunteer, career, urban and rural firefighters together into one integrated new national fire service. There is certainly an exciting time coming up over the next few years. It will be a busy time but I am looking forward to being a part of it.”

Although funding decisions are yet to be finalised, the new organisation will have regional committees that will ensure the particular interests of the regions are taken into account during the transition to the new services.

Th e U FBA s er ves an d represents the interests of 525 fire brigades and fire forces throughout the country, comprising more than 10,000 firefighters.

Its members consist of volunteer, paid, urban, rural, industrial and defence brigades, with 80% being volunteers. The UFBA is the only national organisation that unites and represents fire brigades.

Three years ago, under the banner of his company goHarness, Noel Kennard launched the concept of horse syndication that only required a ‘one off’ payment to race a pacer, for a two-year period.

Noel reports that the response from the readers of the News’ two publications was fantastic.

Despite a promising start, the syndicate’s original horse, Franco Harrison developed his fair share of issues during that time. However, he still managed to record three wins and eight placings for the ‘In It For Fun’ Syndicate, before he was sold on when their time was up.

So ‘Harry’, as he was affectionately known, didn’t exactly set the world on fire, but he certainly gave his syndicate members loads of fun - which was the whole point of the concept, in the first place.

Noel duplicated the same idea fifteen months later with another syndicate, this time buying two pacers. With more than eight months still remaining before the ‘Double The Fun’ Syndicate finishes, they have enjoyed even more success. One of their horses (Astro Boy) has racked up five wins and ten placings, while the other (Western Art) has won on four occasions and been placed six times.

Planning is already underway to launch other syndicates of a similar nature, some time early in 2016.

Keeping with the horse theme, Noel recently brought another

innovative and novel product to New Zealand with News’ readers being some of the first to find out about it…

THE PONY EXPRESS “These are ride-on ponies, powered in the same way that someone would ride a bicycle,” Noel explained. “This makes them ideal for children’s parties or special events.”

The ponies come in three sizes, to cater for the different weights of their users; up to 40kgs, up to 60kgs and up to 90kgs. From the ground up, the saddle heights are 60cms, 70cms and 80cms respectively.

They are available for hire from Noel and Wendy Kennard who live in Weedons (on the other side of the State Highway near Rolleston).

Many readers may have already seen them on TV One’s Breakfast Programme when a live report was broadcast from Riccarton Racecourse on the Wednesday of Cup Week.

“The ponies work best on firm surfaces like driveways, footpaths or even inside houses,” Noel added. “They can also be used on well-tended lawns; but this location can be a bit more difficult for the very young to operate the ponies on.

“They are great for kids, both young and old,” Noel smiled.

“So why don’t you treat yourself or give your child/grandchild a special memory and be the hit of the birthday party by providing items that all the guests can enjoy.”

Clark Land Surveyors Ltd It has been a number of years since the local Darfield Plunket held their informal, social gettogethers, aiding and assisting parents of babies and young families to meet each other socially. Recently though a group of Mums in the area have been getting together and working toward setting up a Plunket parent volunteer group.

The group has the aim of bringing local parents together, while providing family fun events and activities. It has been quite a few years since something of this nature has run in the area, but with a huge influx of families and babies coming through Plunket recently it was decided that now was the perfect time to get

On October 30th Darfield Preschool and Nursery said farewell to Sally Whitwell who has held the Centre Manager’s position for the past ten and a half years. During her time at the Centre Sally has committed herself 100% to the needs of the children and families who have attended. She was always incredibly passionate about involving families, building community connections and most importantly ensuring children's learning in their early years was exciting and fun.

Sally kept the Centre strong through times of ongoing educational change and her leadership was always highly valued.

Always looking to improve, Sally was integral in establishing Darfield Preschool's new premises on Cardale Street. A farewell morning tea was held for Sally at which she was

the group reinstated.

The area already provides a comprehensive range of activities for little ones to participate in, such as music, story time, or toy library sessions, and the organisers plan to add to these with a weekly playgroup session. This is scheduled to begin in the New Year with parents able to bring their children along to play with a variety of stimulating toys and interact with other children, while they meet other Mums or Dads. A Teddy Bears’ Picnic is planned for the New Year also.

The group’s first Parent’s social catch-up event is to be held on Thursday, December 3rd at the Terrace Wine Bar and

Restaurant (from 7.30pm). It takes the form of a dessert night and organisers welcome any Mums or Dads out there who would like to come and meet other parents.

The gift lamb competition at the Courtenay Show not only bestows strived for titles on the winners, but also supplies much appreciated funds for the Association.

There are three classes, 40kg and under, over 40kgs and a wool bred class. Entry was free, was able to be done on Show Day and there were prizes for 1st 2nd and 3rd in each class.

Every entry in the gift lamb and hogget classes also went into a draw to win prizes donated by local businesses.

On the Monday following the show all the lambs and hoggets are slaughtered at Burnham

before being judged on the hooks as one class. Prizes were offered for 1st, 2nd and 3rd as well as the highest commercial value.

The President of Darfield Bridge Club, Betty Mathias welcomed a field of 130 players, hailing from mid, south and north Canterbury, plus Derek Frapwell, the director, from Christchurch, to the annual Spring Tournament, on Friday, October 2nd. And what a success it was for all, with ‘our town’ looking at its ‘blooming’ best!

Our chosen charity for 2015 is the Malvern Cancer Support Group to whom we have given $1,200.

Darfield Bowling Club held their Community Bowls Open Evening last Friday, with approximately twenty people attending.

All enjoyed an evening of learning how to play the sport and it’s hoped this will lead to more people taking up bowls.

The Club welcomes people of all ages to attend their fortnightly competition where they can participate in a team, playing until placegetters are found. Entry is $10 per person and this goes into the prize-pool.

The next session is at Darfield Bowling Club on Friday, December 4th, at 5:45pm and everyone is invited along to ‘have-a-go!’

Travelling to New York for a holiday is one thing, travelling there to run a marathon is quite another! But for a group of friends and family from Darfield that’s exactly what they did. Bridget and Jack Carter, Carter Teisha Lee and Hinemoa Angell set off to the other side of the world to take their place with

almost 50,000 others from all around the globe, to run 26.2 miles. The iconic New York Marathon, held on November 1st, is run through five boroughs in the city, starting in Staten Island then heading through Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and finishing up in Manhattan. About 1.5 million

spectators come out to cheer on the runners and by all accounts it’s an event not to be missed. The Darfield runners all completed the marathon, were tired and happy at the end, but all commented that it was indeed an experience of a lifetime.

Bragan made 22, hitting 2-3 shots to square-leg, with the ball racing to the boundary.
