The sun shone and the crowds flocked - more than 9,000 of them, on Saturday, November 7th, to celebrate the fifth Hororata Highland Games. They enjoyed watching 300 competitors take part, 102 stalls selling various wares, while 200 volunteers worked tirelessly behind the scenes and 350 bottles of Hororata whisky were sold. The Hororata Highland Games began out of a community desire to take charge of its own destiny after the Canterbury earthquakes and has grown in strength year by year. A new event, the Highland Spin, was enjoyed by spectators as they watched three teams compete to create a jersey in six hours, from freshly shorn wool. The winning team, the Gallus Wifies O’ Malvern, won the competition completing the
jersey in five hours eighteen minutes; they were judged on speed but equally, on technique. The Oceania Heavyweight Championship was once again a highlight of the event with New Zealander, Ruben De Jong, Jong taking out the title. The Hororata Highland Games Amateur Men’s Heavy Championship was won by Gary Duffy. Duffy Gary attended the Games in 2014 as a spectator and got involved in the Have A Go events; he did so well that he decided to step up to the competition this year. “Seeing what Gary has achieved
highlights what the Games is about. Giving people the opportunity to try something new with the Have A Go activities and then providing a platform which Games attendees can enter,” said Event Manager, Cindy Driscoll. Driscoll This year we had the Deep South Inter schools’ competition which saw primary school teams compete in the Scottish Heavy athletics. Who knows some of these children might end up competing in the Oceania Heavyweight Championship in years to come,” Cindy added.

In another first the Games hosted an Amateur Women’s Heavy competition which was won by Karla Aekins, Aekins who broke field records in both the Hammer Throw and Weight for Distance.

Serendipity Players opened on Thursday night, November 5th, with their first performance - a trilogy of one act plays by Nick Warburton. They follow an amateur drama group as they rehearse for their production of Hamlet. The audience enjoyed themselves thoroughly and laughed uncontrollably at the antics of the cast throughout their rehearsals, the backstage crew fiasco, along with the finale during the after-show party. The evening was hugely entertaining as the audience sat back and relaxed with their drinks and nibbles in the convivial surroundings. The hall

Fay sharing the success of the All Blacks with an Australian visitor. Darfield Library is soon to lose one of its long-serving Librarians. Fay McOscar joined the Selwyn library team in March 2009, when Darfield Library was operating from the old building in McMillan Street. Fay recalls the hot summers and cold winters in that building, as well as the sound of the train that felt like it was heading through the walls! Moving to the new, light filled and spacious library on South Terrace in February 2011, has been a highlight, but what she
will remember most fondly is growing friendships with customers, building relationships with the young people of the community and working with a lovely team of library staff and volunteers. After 22 years working in libraries, she has seen the transition from manual to computerised systems, as well as the explosion in digital resources and eBooks. Fay commented that she will miss the customers and team at Darfield, but assures everyone
that she will be out and about in the community, and looks forward to some ‘mystery shopper’ visits to the Darfield Library. She is also looking forward to tending her country garden, volunteering in the community and taking care of her school aged granddaughter during the long summer holidays.

A sunny afternoon on Friday, November 6th saw crowds of pupils, parents and members of the community gather together for the opening of the classroom building at Darfield Primary School. This is the first refurbishment of classrooms in Canterbury since the earthquakes. The newly created rooms will provide a collaborative teaching space with multi teaching areas which will vastly benefit teachers and students. The opening ceremony was well attended and enjoyed by all. The majority of the school congregated outside the building to listen to speeches made by Aaron Richards (principal), Kevin Coe (Mayor) and Amy Adams (local MP). Brad Sutton from the Board of Trustees also added his enthusiasm for the renewed addition to the school. Also in attendance for this important occasion were members of the Ministry of Education, Councillor John Morten and members of the local Rununga. The children enthusiastically provided the entertainment in between the speeches by performing Waiata and Haka, much to the delight of onlookers. One lucky student, Isaac Wilson, Wilson made the acquaintance of the key personnel involved in the opening ceremony during the speeches, before going on to cut the ribbon with Selwyn MP Amy Adams. The building was blessed and then everyone was invited inside for a tour, followed by afternoon tea. The students and teachers are extremely excited about the new addition to their school and would like thank everyone for making the opening ceremony

Tuesday, November 3rd saw West Melton School come together for their annual, muchlooked-forward-to pet day. Fortunately the rain held off, the weather brightened and the day ended warmer than expected. Plenty of construction was happening in the classrooms first thing, with a choice of activities; sand saucer, decorated egg and 3D models. Imagination was running rife in the exhibition sections this year with four categories open for: baking, vege, flowers and technology. The animal section saw children bring in dogs of all shapes and sizes, along with sheep, goats,
calves and horses. There were even a range of smaller animals including fish, turtles, cats and chickens. An Agri-Kids competition rounded off the day and a wonderful time was had by all.

Hororata Primary School’s pet day got off to a wonderful start on Friday, November 6th. The action packed day began at 9am with the school divided into their four houses - Kakariki (green), Kahurangi (blue), Whero (red) and Kowhai
(yellow). The students got creative while making practical items under the guidance of teachers, including the Principal, Marty Gameson. They made things from tool boxes and planters. to pretty pot holders and

thoroughly enjoyed being lead through the technology based session. This was followed by a celebration assembly, cake judging and subsequent cake auction. The cake decorating was won by the OliverOliver-Albon family, which was then auctioned off to receive $100 from the Albon family. Esther Bruce created the winning cake which was sold for the impressive amount of $200. Following this, the pet day judging began. The children had brought in everything from ducklings to miniature ponies! It was wonderful to see the animal attendance numbers match that of the pupils. Dustin Rowlands Rowland won Champion Lamb and will carry on to the Canterbury A & P Agriculture Day.

After a talk on the history, by the owner Carol Williamson, there followed a walk through the huge forest of trees planted in the mid 1800’s and under planted with beautiful flowering Rhododendrons. What an experience! A huge lake with an island accessed by several arched bridges, was a focal point on the garden walk. Other points of interest were the beautifully restored country church shifted to this site from the rural area that the owner Donald Williamson’s family farm is located. As well, nestled about the garden are other restored buildings including, an old village store moved from central Ashburton, and a service station (village garage), these buildings contained a huge collection of antique memorabilia and many vintage cars. One particular car looking a bit like a mobile bicycle. In mint going order this a ‘Benz’ car - an exact copy of the very first car ever built, around 1887. Amidst the gardens and lake shore was a cute cottage and a restored piece of the original homestead, both of these furnished in character, vintage style and housing B & B guests. The present owners Donald and Carol Williamson have been there since 2002 and believe they are custodians of this amazing property. Their personal efforts have more than enhanced and restored this 19th century estate for the future, which they feel is their privilege to occupy and care for. All Club members where overwhelmed with the insight into these two majestic properties that have taken so many years to create. They were in admiration of the continuous efforts of the owners who lovingly and joyfully consider themselves custodians prepared to proudly share with the public. The Sheffield Garden Club meet monthly and look forward to their December visit to a property in the Oxford area.

Nathan Simon from Darfield took part in the event in support of Kris and the late Scott. Kris McLeish took on the epic challenge of running 247 kilometres in memory of his brother, Scott McLeish, McLeish who died tragically of a heart attack just over eighteen months ago. Scott was survived by six month old twins and his wife, Anna McLeish. Kris decided to run, straight from the heart, to raise money for Heart Foundation New Zealand. Kris set a target to raise $25,000 for the cause. This target was exceeded last week and with people still donating, it remains to be seen just how much Kris and his supporters have raised. Support came not only from family and around the country, but also from All Black, Brodie Rettalick, who sent Kris a pair of his track pants for luck, before the run. Kris was joined along the way by additional groups of runners and many will have seen them on the roads of Malvern, as well as passing through Darfield. Just as important as raising money for the Heart foundation, was Kris getting the message out there that everybody should be aware of their health. “The

Lawn watering in the early hours of the morning is preferred.” Watering a lawn for one hour in summer can use up to 1,500 litres of water per hour - more water than a whole household typically uses in a day. Selwyn households use over 1,000 litres of water per day, which is significantly higher than a typical New Zealand household uses. Murray stated that during a particularly dry summer, water supplies are placed under pressure as many people decide to water their lawns and gardens at the same time in the evenings, with demand being particularly high during
the weekends. The Council recommends that people set sprinklers or irrigation systems on a timer to operate between 10pm and 6am as this is the time when demand for water is lowest and when water has the best opportunity to soak into the ground and to be used by plants. “Our advice to households aims to smooth demand for water more evenly throughout the day. We want to try to reduce the demand for water at peak periods, as it is expensive to add additional bores just to meet requirements at peak times of summer lawn watering,” Murray said. The Council is also encouraging property owners to avoid wasting water and check the Council’s website, www.selwyn.govt.nz, for advice on sustainable water use.

Property owners in the Selwyn will soon receive an updated rateable value for their property. Since a rating valuation was last carried out for Selwyn in 2012, the number of rateable properties has increased by 19% to reach 23,868. The 2015 revaluation was carried out by Quotable Value (QV) on behalf of Selwyn District Council and showed that there has been a 21.8% overall increase in capital values in Selwyn since 2012. Business properties showed the sharpest rise in property values between 2012 and 2015, with the capital value of these properties rising by an average of 40%. The value of farming properties also rose more than the average for Selwyn – with the capital value of farms rising by 28%. Residential property values rose by an average of 19%. Rateable property value changes varied across Selwyn townships – with values increasing most in Templeton and Southbridge (both 29%) and Darfield (26%). Townships that experienced less increase than the average residential increase of 19% for Selwyn were Rolleston and Leeston (both 16%), West Melton (15%), and Tai Tapu (15%). The volunteer group at Castle Hill have been busy dying up the smaller windfall on the tracks and have checked that the tracks are dry enough to officially open. Hard work on the tracks last year has resulted in them remaining in good condi on over the winter. There are some areas which s ll need to be aUended to but the track is mostly open. The Craigieburn Trails app has now been launched for android phones. This is a fundraising endeavour to raise money for the ongoing maintenance of the tracks.
