At their inaugural attendance of the Synchronised Swimming National Championships, held in Dunedin recently, five girls from the Weedons based, Small Strokes Synchro Club returned home with some pleasing results.

The event was attended by 97 swimmers from New Zealand, Russia and New Caledonia, with the four days of competition being fiercely contested.

Small Strokes swimmer Nina Weir took part in the secondary schools’ competition, representing Burnside High School, swam extremely well and achieved a sixth placing.

The Small Strokes twelve and under team of Lauren Small, Small Tia Betteridge, Betteridge Alessandra Ward and Samantha Asher were placed fourth, following their excellent performance.

Lauren and Alessandra also swam in a twelve and under duet, involving a high risk lift, This was very successful and they were rewarded with a fifth place. The Club was also recognised for its team spirit when it was awarded the ‘Artie Artie Shaw’ Shaw trophy for this aspect of their competition. “It was their first Nationals,� said Joan Billings of Small Strokes Swim School, “and we were all very pleased with these results.�

There is also a lake, folly, rose pergola and potager garden among the many features that abound in this garden. Since it was developed, the house and garden have evolved and grown as new owners have improved on, and created, changed areas of interest. Dame Malvina Major extensively modified the garden design from the original circular drive and cottage borders into a garden which asked to be explored. The garden is now owned by Ian Jefferis and Mark Brown whose love and care has seen it become a peaceful haven that complements their home.

The second garden, ‘Waianiwa’ surrounds the Warren’s home with a parkland to the south that creates a welcoming entrance. The Waianiwa Lake provides a complementary coolness and calm, even in the worst droughts. This garden was designed by Ruth and Ian Warren to create vistas from the house, encompassing garden rooms that each have their own distinguishing features. It welcomes and invites guests to wander and explore around the lake, through the ‘rooms’ and down the cherry walk, which is flanked by an olive grove. The shelter from the trees planted by earlier generations ensures that even strong nor’westers have little impact on the stillness that prevails.

The open day promises to offer a day of charm and beauty. All funds raised are for the new Greendale Community Trust.

The Hororata Highland Games this weekend, November 7th, is a Scottish Festival with a Kiwi twist and it is this unique mix that has ensured the event’s growth. The Games are considered the most traditional Highland Games in the Southern Hemisphere and have recently been invited to join the Scottish Highland Games Association.

“From the very start the committee has been focussed on producing a traditional Highland Games; we even have a Scottish Advisory subcommittee to ensure we tick all the boxes in this respect.

However, as with most things Kiwi, we have added a few of our own unique twists,” explained Event Manager Cindy Driscoll.

“The Chieftain’s Welcoming Ceremony is one example of this. We have a Powhiri to welcome the Chieftain; however the response comes from the Bag Pipes, blending New Zealand and Scottish culture while honouring traditional ‘ b at t l e’ p r ep a r a t io n o r celebration of Highland Games.”

Highland Games originated as a Clan chieftain's way of choosing the best bodyguards and the fittest fighters to prepare for battle with other Clans. Not all the chief's requirements were warlike - musicians and dancers were also important for the prestige of his household.

Artist, Katrina McGettigan’s 100 New Zealand birds in 100 days exhibition will be open to the public - November 7-9th.

other artists who had completed it in previous years. So I thought this would be a great thing to gain a little more exposure, help with my technique and give me something to aim towards each day.” explained Katrina.

The enthusiastic artist left her job three months ago as a preschool teacher to follow her dream of becoming an artist.

The fear of the unknown, including an unknown salary, did not deter Katrina from delving headfirst into her love of art.

The 100 native birds project is also a New Zealand first, “I chose to paint 100 New Zealand Native birds because I knew I could work from a small canvas to complete each one (100mm x 100mm) and from what I can find online it is the first of its kind in New Zealand so far.

There is one other artist who completed a similar challenge but she did the birds through a printing method rather than painting.”

Katrina’s hard work and extensive preparation shows in

the detail of her final pieces. She had to find the right profiles to paint, get permission to use images from the likes of Te Papa and D.O.C, as well as contacting photographers and ornithologists across the country.

The success of the exhibition is reflected in the popularity of Katrina’s social media profiles.

She has received messages from fans with memories and encouragement. With one avid fan posting, “I'm stuck in my house with a fractured spine.

Your paintings have been a huge happiness in my day. I worked for Bird Rescue for a few years.

Thank you, keep up the paintings.” This comment touched Katrina’s heart and she has gifted this lady a bird of choice from the challenge.

“All-in-all it has definitely been worth it! And hopefully in a year’s time I will be close to finishing my second 100 day challenge.”

On October 18th, Sheffield School’s pupils and staff, along with the wider community were invited to attend a two-part opening of the School’s new Learning Centre. The morning blessing was officially performed by representatives from Te Taumutu Runanga. Denise Sheat delivered the official blessing with the support of Liz Brown and Taumutu were also represented and supported by Kaumatua. The children all performed two Waiata during the blessing ceremony and Reverend Susan Baldwin delivered a closing prayer and blessing to complete the first part of the opening day.

The second part of the opening was an evening picnic; organisers were delighted to have a healthy turn out for both events.

Sheffield School’s principal Nick Pratt paid tribute to the many people contributing to the Learning Centre project. From those who secured the original funding for the project back in 2013, through to those who removed the old library and made good the land with landscaping. Nick thanked those who have fundraised for the Centre and commended the builders who delivered a functional learning space in a highly professional and resourceful manner. All this support has ensured that the Sheffield School community will benefit greatly from this resource in the years to come.

The Learning Centre stands as a material recognition that the world has evolved significantly since previous generations attended school. “The age in which we’re now living is known as the ‘Knowledge Age’ and is

morning blessing and official opening using a drone, before editing the footage and converting it into a stunning movie. This will be added to the School’s website in the next couple of weeks.

The Centre will be open to the Sheffield School Community from 2.30-4.30pm every school day, so that children can connect to their learning with the support of the key people in their lives.

The magic of Christmas will be on display in the Darfield District on Sunday, November 29th.

Following the success of two previous Christmas Trails held in 2012 and 2013, The Friends of Darfield Hospital plan to hold another similar event again this year.

Many will recall that last year The Friends held an alternative event in the form of a very successful Garden Party, which raised in excess of $6,500 to provide a gazebo for the hospital grounds. The gazebo will provide a splendid outdoor place for patients to sit and talk to their visitors, while viewing the attractive gardens.

This year’s Christmas Trail will feature seven fabulously decorated homes - six in Darfield and another in Kirwee, and three beautiful gardens – two in Darfield and the other at Waddington. The latter also features a museum of relics and items from bygone days which is highly recommended to people of all ages.

Afternoon Tea will be available at one home on the Trail which will be open from 11am to 5pm.

Tickets which include a map and details of each venue cost $10 for adults, and children under the age of sixteen (must be accompanied by an adult) are free. Tickets are available from: Darfield Garden Centre. The

Selwyn’s first Diwali Celebration was held on Saturday, October 31st on the Green behind the Lincoln Library. Diwali (or Deepavali, the ‘festival of lights’) is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated each year, in the Northern Hemisphere autumn, which is New Zealand’s spring. To say the Lincoln event was an outstanding success is probably an understatement.

The inaugural celebration attracted an attendance of over 1,000 people, with more than 400 attending the craft sessions in the specially openfor-the-event, Library.

Smart thermostats with connec on can be monitored via your smart phone through an applica on and turn on or o and give you informa on.

Your driveway cam can alert you to intruders, and you can even see them on your phone. Wearable devices like some of the watches around can monitor pulse rates, steps taken, and so much more then report these back to your computer for analysis and/or prin ng.

The Greendale Church (on Greendale Rd, at Greendale) has a new roof thanks to the generous donations of local people.

This means the church is now structurally sound enough to be used again. To celebrate, a grand re-opening will held on Sunday, November 8th.

West Melton School students were excited to participate in the annual ‘Paint the Town Red’ fundraiser day.

The event, held on October 23rd, saw the whole school attired in red for the day. The student exec organised face painting, a colouring competition and a best dressed competition. They managed to raise over $600 towards Radio Lollipop in Christchurch.

Radio Lollipop is a charity, operating for 35 years internationally and 21 years in New Zealand; providing care, comfort, play and entertainment for sick children in hospital. Its volunteers visit children at Christchurch Hospital and Ronald McDonald House to help make their time in hospital less overwhelming and more enjoyable.

Radio Lollipop gives young patients a voice and a choice during their stay. While they can´t say ‘no’ to taking their medicine or receiving treatment, they can request their favourite songs, win prizes and hear their own voices on the radio.

GO THE ALL BLACKS The Rugby World Cup definitely created a lot of interest amongst the children at Darfield Preschool and Nursery, so when Chris Thwaites offered to do some rugby coaching with the children during the Centre’s All Blacks supporters’ day there was huge excitement. The children came dressed as All Blacks and Chris gave some valuable hints on keeping your eye on the ball and running fast, plus sound tips on how to best score a try. Of greatest importance however was the significance of working as a team, being able to do the haka and of course shouting; ‘Go the All Blacks’ as loudly as possible!

It was indeed an energetic fun

theme of Halloween, others came dressed as Spiderman, Batman and there was even a banana! The highlight of the evening was the smashing of the piñata and the feast of treats that followed. The evening was a huge success, a time to mix and mingle and HALLOWEEN CELEBRATIONS It has become a regular annual e n j o y a f a m i l y p a r t y event at Darfield Preschool and atmosphere.

The CatchFitness 20Week Body and Lifestyle Competition held their awards on Saturday Night – with some locals impressing the judges to be Finalists and Winners in their categories again for this year!

An excerpt from Graeme’s report was read out at the

awards night and he also mentioned a portion of it in his winning speech. “I had not been in a gym or taken part in a training session since school days, so I had no idea of what I had let myself in for, how unfit I was and how much I was going to enjoy the challenge of learning about, and improving, my overall strength and fitness.’’

Ainsley offered her congratulations to Graeme and added that he had certainly shown how making some small changes and being consistent is the key to reaching some great goals. She also congratulated the other local competitors who took on this challenge.

“I am sure you are enjoying the rewards of being fitter, stronger and following a healthier and more rewarding lifestyle,” Ainsley concluded.

The Selwyn Kapa Haka showcase was held in Rolleston on Wednesday, October 28th. This fun event for children in the Selwyn area is intended for pupils to display their learning to family and friends.

West Melton’s Te Kapahaka o Te Kura o Papatahora consisting of 85 students from year four to eight gave powerful performances throughout the show. They performed two Waiata’s - ‘Ka huri’ and ‘I patai au’ and the boys performed a haka, ‘Tahu Potiki’. “Matua Maaka had done a wonderful job of tutoring and supporting the Kapa Haka students,” commented a School spokesperson.

The weather was perfect for last weekend’s Oxford Garden Fete, held at Ribblesdale Gardens.

The garden was a delight with c o lo u rf u l s e l ect i o ns o f rhododendrons, azaleas and spring blooms, and there was considerable positive feedback.

Those attending enjoyed fantastic music floating through the garden and played by Assembly Required, along with a great selection of food. All this and the opportunity to shop at eighty quality stalls, displaying beautiful and creative products, made it definitely a day to remember. It was unanimously agreed that there was a wonderful selection of Christmas gifts, tempting even the most discerning shopper.

The fabulous guest ‘Jax Jax Hamilton’ Hamilton (of Masterchef fame) made an entertaining addition to the day with her bubbly personality and rapport with the crowd.

“We are very fortunate to have two quality children’s entertainers living in the Oxford area,” commented Wendy Doody one of the Fete’s organ is er s. “Ench ant ing Entertainment did beautiful fairy face paintings, while Jason Clements held a puppet show for the children to enjoy.”

On Thursday, November 12th the Glentunnel School community will gather to enjoy one of the year’s highlights when the School holds its annual Pet Day and Great Cake Auction.

It’s well known as an exciting and fun day for all who either attend, or participate and brings many visitors to the School for the event. The children look forward to bringing their pets to School for the day, as well as meeting the pets of others. Owners also get a chance to demonstrate knowledge of their pets, along with how to care for them. Judges on the day have a difficult task deciding where the prizes will be awarded for this section, and also have to assess demonstrations of dog obedience and training skills.

The talented students of Glentunnel School will also exhibit their creative and artistic prowess with a display of musical instruments made from recycled materials, along with

decorated shoes. Added to all this, a market, run by the children will be held on the day and feature sweet-treats made by pupils, plus a fundraising raffle.

To round off the day Glentunnel School will hold their much looked-forward to ‘Great Cake Auction’. It’s no stock-standard cake auction though - it’s touted as entertainment at its best! Culinary creations from families, judged by a local restaurateur, along with lively and humourous auctioneering by the PW&A team - make for a fun and entertaining fundraiser.

Bidding from the enthusiastic crowd is generally lively and a number of local businesses have got onboard to sponsor auction goods to add to the cakes.

Last year the auction raised over $2,500 which the students used to purchase sports equipment and outdoor toys.

Last Friday night the Darfield Primary School PTA held its long awaited Quiz Night. The event attracted over eighty people and included parents, board members, teachers past pupils and members of the community. The Quiz was a fun, social, event organised to bring the school community together. The night also ran a House Competition - enabling teams to vie for earned points toward the school house of their choice. The losers of the round were equipped with crazy hats to wear for their penance - giving everyone a good laugh along the way At the completion of the night Algidus House won. Selwyn MP Amy Adams welcomes the planting of 516 hectares of new forest in Canterbury, thanks to the first round of funding through the Government’s Afforestation Grants Scheme (AGS).

The Afforestation Grants Scheme will see $22.5 million invested over the next six years to encourage the planting of an expected 15,000 hectares of new forest throughout New Zealand. Successful applications for the first round of funding cover 5819 hectares of forest,

including areas of planting in the Selwyn region.

Priority was given to applicants addressing environmental issues such as erosion and Amy noted that, “every application was assessed against a set of eligibility criteria and included a detailed technical forestry assessment.�

Successful applicants will receive $1,300 per hectare for new forest planting.

The next round of funding will open in April next year for planting in winter 2017.

After cancellations in wintertime due to inclement weather the Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade’s fundraising Mud Plug 4x4 event was held last weekend. While spectator numbers were a little lower than on previous years, which organisers suspect may have had something to do with an All Black victory in the early hours of the morning, those that attended were again treated to a great day. As well as the mud and thrills and spills of the vehicles there were displays and activities, as well as a well supported auction.

“We can’t thank volunteers and supporters enough,” said one of the event’s organisers and Sheffield Fire Brigade’s Chief, Nev Croy.

Croy “Thanks to the digger operators who hauled out anyone who got stuck in the quagmire, and there was only one tip-over. Possibly caused by driver over-confidence,” Nev smiled.

There were 35 entrants in the event coming from as far as Dunedin and Wellington. The eventual winner (Andrew Andrew Staveley of Nelson) also got to take a ride around the course (in his Jeep Wrangler) with a reporter from New Zealand’s V8 magazine - who arrived to cover the event.

While the final totals from entry and auction hadn’t been calculated at the time of going to print, organisers were confident that the much appreciated assistance of all who worked hard to bring the event to the community, would have raised funds for the Brigade.

“There were positive comments from all quarters,” Nev said.

The Brigade were instrumental in providing fire related demonstrations at the event also, providing information about dangers and safety. for those present.

The special maze tunnel for children was a definite hit.

Looking like a member of the bouncy castle family, the passageway was intended to replicate the hands and knees exit route from a fire. More than 800 youngsters went through the tunnel on the day.

The kitchen fire demo trailer was a sobering reminder of the perils of fire and the Brigade was on hand to answer any queries about this aspect of their work.

“We can’t thank everyone enough for making this event such a success,” Nev stressed.

“From the volunteers and Brigade members to the drivers, support crew and spectators - it was another great Mud Plug,” he finished.

For arable farmers now is the time when all the tough questions are being asked.

What’s the price of grain going to do? How much carryover stock is there? Why is the price so low? What’s the weather going to do? And what is this season going to look like?

All the questions have different answers depending on who you talk to and how many beers are involved! At this point in time, the prices are low, stocks are high and demand isn’t where we’d like it.

These tensions are a reflection of where the dairy industry is and what they are going through.

Despite the downturn, arable farmers have a lot to celebrate.

We have responded to lower grain prices by reducing the area of feed grain where we can.

Some arable farmers have chosen to produce one thing and that’s it, while others are looking to grow different crops.

I don’t have a crystal ball, but the reduction in 2016 harvest feed grain should help to clear any carryover stocks and

We seem to hear an awful lot about the rough time other livestock industries are going through, but there are few avenues for arable farmers to get together and have a good old yarn about factors influencing our industry.

Once again, the old man just muNered and did nothing.

The usher marched briskly back up the aisle, and in a moment he returned with the manager. Together the two of them tried repeatedly to move the old disheveled man, but with no success.
