With the 2015 ski season now at an end and with Gnomes Alpine Sports about to embark on their biggest business development change to date (stay tuned and watch this space) it was rewarding to have their skill and expertise recognised by the Ski Industry. Mid season, business co-owner Ally Kerr won, for the second time in three years, recognition as the top salesperson for Rossignol skis in New Zealand. The prize, heli-skiing with Southern Lakes Heli ski, took Ally to Queenstown for a day to remember. “I really wasn’t expecting it this time round,” Ally said, “and the heli-skiing day was perfect, blue skies and fresh powder to die for,” he enthused! “This has been our best season on record, the snow was great throughout and this top salesperson’s win was just the icing on the cake.” Ally wasn’t the only one of Gnomes Alpine Sports’ personnel to have their dedication and sales ability recognised though. Long time retail manager Lydia Gliddon was awarded a trophy for being the ‘Soft Goods Salesperson of the Year’ voted for by New Zealand importers and suppliers at the recent NZSIF (New Zealand Ski industry Federation) tradeshow, held in Queenstown. Gnomes Alpine Sports co-owner Leith Kerr added that Lydia’s award was well deserved and testament to all her hard work and commitment. As Gnomes prepare for a huge change to their business they will operate Thursdays and Fridays 10am-5pm and Saturdays 10am -1pm. Still plenty of stock for those heading to the northern hemisphere for winter and plenty of great prices to be had.

A team of Darfield firefighters are currently across the Tasman having just competed in the 2015 Australasian Firefighters Championship. Alan Kittelty, Kittelty Bryan Thomas and Joost Kepers joined forces with Morrinsville from the North Island to compete at Echuca, Victoria, (October 23rd - 25th). The composite team competed in ten different events - against three other teams from New Zealand, one from Fiji and the balance of the total thirty, coming from various parts of Australia.

Selwyn District Council is reminding all rural property owners to check they have a rapid number displayed at their driveway entrance. Having a rapid number is essential as it gives every rural property an identifiable address to assist emergency services identify where people live. Rapid numbers also help identify ind ivid ual pro perties to couriers, and can also be given out to help friends and visitors find a property. Summer is the high-risk season for fires in Selwyn, especially in rural areas, so the Council is also encouraging people to ensure their driveways are wide enough to allow emergency vehicles in and out. One to four digit rapid numbers are found on blue plastic posts and are used to help identify the exact address of a rural property. Numbers are allocated

based on a system which measures the distance from the start of the road to the property’s driveway in units of 10. For example number 390 is 3,900 metres (or 3.9 km) from the start of the road. This nationwide system is known as the Rural Address Property Identification system or RAPID. Selwyn District Council’s Emergency Management Officer Ryan O’Rourke said it is important for people to understand what a rapid number is and how it can be helpful in an emergency. “Rapid numbers are particularly useful for emergency services such as Police, Ambulance, Fire Department and Civil Defence, as they make it easier to find rural properties. It is a good idea to write the rapid number down close to the phone so it is easy to access in an emergency,” Ryan said. “It is also important to ensure that the driveway or yard entrance is wider than four by four metres to allow enough room for emergency vehicles like a fire tanker to access the property and turn around if they need to,” he added. “Property owners should also make sure their rapid number is clearly visible and keep any trees or plants around the number trimmed if needed.” Each blue post should show one to four digits, but many still show seven digits from when posts showed two sets of numbers - a three-digit ‘road ID

Hampton Engineering’s original base is located at 90 High St, Southbridge and has been servicing the Ellesmere area for over 25 years. Due to local demand, the newest branch of Hampton Engineering is a base at 2253 Bealey Rd in Hororata. Intended to cut down on travelling mes and costs to their local client base, the Bealey Road branch will make for a much more efficient service. Hampton Engineering was recently purchased by Fred Dodson from Rangiora and Hororata local Phil Freeman. The company’s previous owner, Geoff Hampton is currently redeveloping the Challenge Service Sta on in Darfield. Fred has a twenty year background in dairy, agricultural contrac ng and farm advisory, while Phil has a whopping thirty year’s experience in industrial, agricultural and structural engineering. This wealth of experience has given the pair and their staff, the skills to cater to a huge range of farming and industrial engineering requirements. Hampton Engineering currently employs eleven staff over both sites, giving them the people-power to cover all aspects of general agricultural engineering, specialising in dairy sheds, feed systems and the manufacture of the Hampton Rollermill. Also in their extensive repertoire is the manufacture of top gates, backing gates and specialty trailers. The Hororata branch currently employs two engineers, with a third joining them aOer Christmas. The workshop is open between 7:30am and 5pm weekdays and also offers a 24/7 callout service. The celebrations to recognise Southbridge’s 150 years were certainly a success. Held over Labour weekend, the event attracted huge crowds who enjoyed everything organisers had laid on. The ball on Saturday night was a 350 person sellout and with the
rugby starting at 4am, many had little or no sleep! The result of the game however, left few concerned about the lack of shut-eye. Sunday’s combined church service was packed, as parishioners celebrated their 150 years in the Southbridge community. The Historical Society held a large display in the Rifle Club Hall, which was full to capacity with viewers, for most of the weekend. “The Cochrane's Street Parade was the biggest seen in living memory,” reported Albert A nd er s on , one of t he organisers, “and you had to stand in one spot for an hour and a half just to see it all. Individual floats and participants in the street parade would have numbered 200 at least. The Ellesmere Vintage Club did a wonderful job in contributing to the parade, as well as to the McMillan Labour Day Sports the next day with Michael Vink blitzing the Cycle race.” As well as the Street Parade the
main thoroughfare was home to more than forty five stalls providing everyone with something to see or do throughout the day. The McMillan Labour Day sports attracted 2,500 people in perfect weather conditions. Sixty Stalls, vintage displays, plus wood and chaff cutting, well and truly kept the crowd entertained. As did Andrew Lambie’s sheep shearing efforts on a machine which looked like it may have come out of the Ark! Well known identity Bill Moore won the beard growing competition, while those attending participated in Bumper Ball, Soccer, Top Town and Sheaf tossing, plus enjoyed the music and sun aplenty. “Southbridge should be proud of the effort put in by businesses, clubs, churches, and the people themselves, who make this community what it is today,” Albert said. “The organising Committee couldn't have wished for a better result and all I can finish off with is ‘Go the All Blacks!’,” he ended.

Lids on plastic bottles must be removed manually by operators, so it is much more efficient to leave them off bottles in the recycling. Glass bottles with lids on smash up in the recycling plant, however the glass can remain trapped inside the lid and this must also be removed by hand. Bottles and jars, including wine and beer bottles, must be recycled without their lids on. It should also be remembered to clean any containers before putting them in the recycling bin. “These small actions on your part will reduce the cost, and increase the efficiency of our recycling system and help reduce waste going to landfill.” For more recycling info visit

FORRESTER CONTRACTING Forty of the brightest secondary school science students have been selected to attend the inaugural event Powering Potential to be held in Wellington from December 13th to 16th and which will seek answers to some of New Zealand’s future problems and amongst them and the only student from the Canterbury Region is George Watson a pupil of Darfield High School. Organised by the Royal Society of New Zealand and supported by Freemasons New Zealand, Powering Potential will bring New Zealand’s most promising science students together to work out how to solve challenging issues facing the country. They will be supported and guided by scientists and mentors. The students will work in teams of three to five on problems that have been submitted by science organisations. They relate to a wide range of areas critical to New Zealand’s future, from the environment to health. The students will research, investigate and collaborate to solve the problems they have been given. They will also visit GNS Science to meet with scientists and learn about the skills they have used to solve science problems. “The students will need to think outside the square and use their creative capabilities to find solutions. At the end of the four days each team will present its findings at a special function,” said Andrew Cleland, Cleland Chief Executive of the Royal Society of New Zealand. Each student was required to submit an in-depth application, which focussed on their own science research or outlined how they have contributed to an area of science in their school or community. The students were selected because they are serious about

The return of the children's races was welcomed by all with the sack race attracting numerous entries being both keenly contested and lots of fun. The sun shone, and a huge crowd headed to the Hororata Domain to enjoy all the fun of the Fair. The Hororata Parish Spring Fair had something for everyone and the warm sunshine saw everyone enjoy what was on offer. The return of traditional children’s races were a hit with the young participants, as well as the spectating adults.
