Saturday, October 17th saw members of the community and officials gather for the blessing and the official-start-of-use of the new Darfield, St John building on Bray Street.

Officiating Kaumata Matua Henare Edwards, Edwards Pat Nutira, Daphne O’Connell, Denise Sheat and Margaret Jones from Te Taumutu Runanga re-turned the sod (subsequent to the turning of the sod ceremony held before the building began) before blessing the building.

The ambulances were also blessed with similar ceremony ambulance which now appear in yellow instead of the familiar white. The blessing also appeared to drive away the rain which had plagued the event, and bring out the sunshine.

Donors and long term supporters of St John Malvern were invited to attend the blessing before enjoying

Darfield’s newest business Johnny Fresh, located in the almost fully completed shopping block on the site of the old McMillan Street library, has had a full on few days since its opening last Friday afternoon.

Owner Johnny Heasley, Heasley ably assisted by his three sons Jeffrey, Jeffrey Tom and Ben were at times faced with queues around the shop and almost out the door, as locals eager to sample the store’s wares packed themselves into the shop. Folk weren’t disappointed - the bright and attractive displays appealed and the quality of the produce sold it to even the most discerning customer.

An instore strawberry special, which offered customers a very sharp price, saw more than 1500 punnets go out the door last weekend alone!

The ice-cream machine at Johnny Fresh will be installed in the very near future and all going well, real fruit ice-creams will be on the menu in time for the hot, hot days of summer.

Johnny, Jeffrey, Tom and Ben thank everyone for their support, as well as their patience, while the team get to grips with the computerised cash register system and all the learning curves associated with opening a new business. All three of Johnny’s sons work elsewhere, but in the hectic days of start-up at Johnny Fresh, all have been assisting wherever possible.

and Vege store (the last one was in the corner of Midwest Mews on the site of the Sugar and Spice business) and while the area has been well served by the Supermarket and various roadside sellers - having another, quality, choice will undoubtedly be popular.

The launch event was an outstanding success with around one hundred people attending and more than one hundred books sold at the event. Early sales numbers like this, according to the book’s publicist, are positively unheard of.

Gerald was raised on a South Canterbury farm and as well as being a journalist, he spent his life working on the land. After assisting with a few small fencing projects on Mt White, he became fascinated by the Station and jumped at the opportunity to write its history and pay homage to the men and women who have lived and worked there.

Mt White is the largest privately owned Station in New Zealand and spans over 40,000 hectares. Surprisingly, there have only ever been six different owners, which is emblematic of a definitive reluctance to part with the land. The Turnbull family, who live 200 kilometres away from the station, have owned Mt White for almost one hundred

The Moffat’s Flower company presented a team of varying age cyclists to compete in the open men’s class race, held last weekend. The twelve hour race was run at McLean’s Island and the team, complete with local Junior Ethan Rose, finished second in the men’s class and came an impressive fourth overall. Over 160 teams took part, racing 25 laps in eleven hours -41 minutes and covering 321kilometres. A creditable result for a mixed age team - the oldest of which was 67 and the youngest twelve!

Congratulations go to the other locals who also competed with some great results achieved.

A large country garden brimming with rhododendrons, azaleas and garden treasures, is ready to delight crowds for the much looked forward to Oxford Country Garden Fete.

The Fete, which is now in its fourth year, has grown in popularity with visitors attending from Christchurch, Waimakariri, Selwyn and Ashburton and many also making the short drive from Hokitika and Greymouth.

This boutique event, held at Ribblesdale Gardens, boasts a over seventy only, stalls of the very highest quality.

Taking place on November 1st between 10am and 4pm, this is

a community fundraiser, as well as a chance for business owners to promote their products to the wider community. This year the Fete will donate to the Oxford Fire Brigade for their support on the day and to the OWMC Vintage Machinery Section for their display. Over the past three years the Fete has given away $15,000 from gate sales to voluntary groups.

A combination of quality stalls, situated amongst the four acres of beautiful gardens, great food, wine and ale, as well as a static display of vintage machinery, make the day a wonderful family friendly event. Entertainment is

laid on for children and well known band Assembly Required will provide music for the enjoyment of all.

Well known foodie and MasterChef finalist Jax Hamilton will impress with her culinary skills and for all those attending it’s an ideal opportunity to enjoy a relaxing day in the country.

When asked by the Selwyn District Council to suggest street names for their new subdivision, Evan and Maureen Frew researched their family histories and chose the names of the ships that brought their ancestors to Canterbury - hence Cressy Place and William Hyde Place.

Evan’s family arrived in 1850 on the ‘Cressy’ (one of Canterbury’s First Four Ships) and ini ally seFled in Kaiapoi, but the next genera on moved to Greendale in the 1860’s and there have been Frew’s in the Malvern area ever since. Maureen’s ‘William Hyde’ ancestors arrived in 1852 and lived in Ohoka, but in 1865 another family branch seFled in Weedons, where Maureen’s grandfather played cricket for the newly-formed Weedons Club.

Over 100 years and ďŹ ve genera ons later, Maureen’s grandsons are playing for the same Club - such is history!

Evan has always been keen on collec ng acorns and has grown many trees, so it was natural to use oaks as the theme tree for this subdivision.

Two trusts (Malvern’s Two Rivers Community Trust and Christchurch-based Community Energy Action (CEA)) have now banded together for the benefit of the community, with the aim of helping make homes warmer and healthier for the most vulnerable.

Two Rivers is a charitable trust which works on youth strength, food resilience, social housing and community support to connect people with resources.

It is the latter two goals that led it to get in touch with CEA which offers free and subsidised insulation, heating, curtains and energy advice.

“We have been searching for partnerships with organisations in Christchurch who are looking at having a presence in the Malvern community such as CEA,” commented Paul Cossey, Cossey Chairperson of Two Rivers

Community Trust. “It is often said that it’s further from Christchurch to Darfield than it is from Darfield to Christchurch, so we welcome CEA’s efforts to come to us.”

“We both have our strengths,” said Caroline Shone, Shone Chief Executive of CEA, “so it makes sense to take advantage of that, instead of reinventing the wheel.

We have funding available to help people in need. However, as we work throughout Canterbury, we cannot reach every individual. That’s where local organisations such as Two Rivers come in. They know the people in the community and encourage and assist them to get in touch with us for help.”

visited CEA’s public display area where energy adviser Michael Begg took them around the display for ideas on energy efficiency and they brainstormed about practical ideas to help the local Malvern community.

“I had a picture in my mind, but it was so much better than what I had expected,” commented Bev Elder, Elder one of the Two Rivers community hub members who visited CEA. “I liked the cut-away house, that was such a stimulus to ask questions. It was easy to compare with my own house and what I need to do to make it more comfortable,” she said.

“And there is the reassurance that the information is backed up by science and is not about the latest gizmo.

“CEA make it very easy to encourage people to ring up and ask. I feel we have a very solid link to CEA’s service now,” Bev finished.

Saturday, October 17th saw Darfield High School’s Hall decorated and ready to welcome over one hundred people to the Trends and Trivia Gala Evening.

The fundraising evening was a collaboration between the Charing Cross Red Cross and Darfield’s premier fashion store, Scarlett Rose. The evening began with music by students from the Christchurch Polytechnic Jazz School, who performed a selection of familiar tunes much to the delight of the audience.

Nine locally recruited and extremely brave women took to the runway, showcasing a range of outfits from casual to evening wear. All outfits were from the Scarlett Rose summer collection. “We were really proud of the models, they were fabulous, especially as they had only had ninety minutes to rehearse,” said Pam Williams of Scarlett Rose.

This event truly was a team effort, “managing an event of that size is always challenging and could not go ahead without the enthusiasm and commitment of all those behind the scenes. Rachel Gramann, Gramann of Scarlett Rose was responsible for wardrobe, ensuring all the beautiful garments made it to the catwalk on the right person, while Karen Overton of the Shearing Shed demonstrated her creative flair, styling all nine models. The Quiz Team, Diane Hide, Angela and Andrew Hanrahan worked with haste to keep the scores in order,” said Pam. “There was also a huge amount of work setting up, Peter from Darfield High School, and Brendon spent the afternoon and evening ensuring the sound and lighting was perfect.”

Sheffield School were understandably delighted on Tuesday, October 20th, when they received funds from the Cash for Communities programme. This programme was established by PGG Wrightson and Ballance AgriNutrients to offer support to schools and community organisations throughout New Zealand. Farmers who

purchased Ballance AgriNutrients fertiliser through their PGG Wrightson accounts, in September to November or in Autumn, could earn cash for a community organisation; be it a local school, St John or Rescue helicopters.

Receiving the funds on behalf of Sheffield School was principal, Nick Pratt, who was delighted that the money would go straight back into children’s education. “Sheffield school greatly appreciates the support from PGG Wrightson and Ballance. It is the tremendous backing from locals and initiatives like this one that separates rural schools from those in town and makes all the difference. Schools are the hub of a community and we feel very lucky to receive such a great amount of support.� Nick explained that the money would be spent on new Physical Education equipment for the school.

The day dawned clear and crisp on Friday, October 16th, for the start of the Darfield Rugby Club’s ‘Darfield ITM Fishing Competition’. Even though a few were a bit under the weather, it was a great day to kick off what became an awesome weekend of fishing. The wind came up for a few hours, but it would still prove to be some of the best fishing ever experienced in the years that the competition has been running.

Saturday was an even rougher morning for some and morning showers didn’t help, but yet again the fishing was excellent, before the wind gathered intensity for a couple of hours.

There were many old stories being told around the camp fires at night, but there were also some new ones; like a legendary monster fish that Horse (Simon Simon Moore), Moore lost right beside the

boat. However, according to David Grice, it was more likely Horse’s reflection in the water, playing tricks on his eyes, than it was the Holy Grail that fell off his line!

The old crew of Dick, Dick Trout and Cows*** were back, and this year, for the entertainment of all, Cows*** donned a nice blue onesie that quite rightly earned him a fair bit of ribbing from his, more astute, team mates.

One crew found themselves in a spot of bother when their boat marooned on the beach, and with the waves crashing over the stern trying to sink the Yellow Submarine, the motor became embedded in the bottom of the Lake. Dick and Trout came to the rescue, and while the ‘onesie’ man kept himself safe in the back of their boat, Dick and Trout managed to pull the extremely grateful team of Jeff, Jeff Uncle Pete

Another team used their auxiliary motor to mark a spot in the canal where they had seen some fish.

Perfect plan they thought, until they woke on Saturday morning and realised they had forgotten to tie a buoy to the motor! They were keen to tell everybody the motor just detached from the boat, however most believe the aforementioned to actually be the truth! The motor was duly found and pulled from the depths and although there are no reports about its survival following the ordeal, it’s believed the guys had a great time.

Young Kegan Pitkethley took out the heaviest fish award this year with a fantastic 2.36 kilogram Rainbow, while Catherine Cruickshank won the Women’s heaviest fish with a 2.31kg Rainbow, and Nigel Hodges the prestigious Dick and Trout award.

Nathan Davies won the casting competition with Keri Judd getting a very close second and Charlie Buttle following in third place.

All those that attended enjoyed watching the rugby live at Haldon station on Sunday morning, which may well go down as one of the best games ever seen.

DRFC President James Scollay was grateful to all those that

Coalgate Earthworks is a rural earthmoving company with vast on-farm experience and a 45 year history within the Malvern area.

Mike and Karen Meares established Coalgate Transport Ltd in 1975 and grew it into a thriving business offering rural clients a range of service from stock cartage, fertiliser spreading and general freight.

In 1984 Mike and Karen sold the trucks to Frew’s Transport and went into farming Ryton Station, on the shores of Lake Coleridge. In 2008, Mike and Karen left the farm and returned to Coalgate and Coalgate Transport began operating again, this time with an earthmoving focus.

Cindy (Mike and Karen’s daughter) and her husband Simon Driscoll moved to Coalgate in 2010 and Simon began working with Mike in the business. Together they have grown it from a few machines to three diggers, two bulldozers, several trucks, various other equipment and four staff members.

Simon and Cindy took over Coalgate Earthworks, from Mike and Karen Meares in July 2015.

However Mike is still very much part of the business, ensuring the family tradition continues.

The company has a long history of producing high quality, professional earthworks over a large range of projects. Recently Coalgate Earthworks have been heavily involved in farm conversions, as the Central Plains Water (CPW) scheme has been established.

“CPW has been very good for our business, many farmers have taken the opportunity to irrigate their land to increase production and have more security with less impact from drought,” Simon commented.

“We like to work with farmers to ensure that the best result is achieved. We like to think of ourselves as part of the project team, rather than just an outside contractor coming in to do a job,” Simon added.

“With a range of machinery we are able to tackle most jobs including shelter belt, tree and stump removal and burning,

land profiling, drainage, farm roading, stockwater system installation, trenching, and any other earthwork requirements you may have.”

“Our fleet has grown gradually and in response to the needs of our clients. We have just custom designed a mole plough to go behind the bulldozer, that has proved to be extremely effective in laying pipe for stock water schemes.”

Clients who deal with Coalgate Earthworks are dealing with a family business. “We live and work in the community and we get to know our customers on multiple levels,” Cindy and Simon finished.

During the past month, Darfield Preschool and Nursery have hosted two evenings to support parents in understanding and being a part of their child’s education. The first evening focussed on the topic, ‘The Value of Play’. Learning through play is an important element of the Preschool’s philosophy and the evening included some hands on play experiences to demonstrate how play helps develop social skills and physical confidence, as well as language and communication skills. The second evening was designed to inform and support parents of children who are turning two and therefore transitioning from the Nursery environment into the Preschool room, which caters for two to five year olds.

Some engaging questions allowed the teachers to explain how each child’s wellbeing was nurtured and how the parents and families were involved in this important and exciting progression in their child’s learning journey.

A big change will soon take

place at the Preschool, as they sadly say goodbye to their Centre manager Sally Whitwell who leaves them after ten and a half years at the helm.

Sally joined the team in 2005 at the old premises on Telegraph Road and was a huge driving force in securing land and the wonderful new building on Cardale Street. Sally has always had a passion for children and their learning and the building was part of that.

Many children, and parents, have been through Preschool and known Sally for her passion, friendliness, community spirit and of course fun!

A quote that sums up Sally is, “I want every little girl (and boy) that is told she is bossy to be told she has leadership skills,� (Cheryl Cheryl Sandberg).

West Melton bowlers ‘Marking Out Team’ preparing for Mitchell Cup action.

Another season is under way for the West Melton Bowling Club who held their opening day on September 20th. President Norm Dunlop welcomed all who attended, especially new members Ross Mitchell, Roy Daniel and Mark Dobbin (who has just recently returned from Australia). The honour of delivering the first jack and the first bowl went to Ross Sadler, Sadler who is currently President of Malvern and Helen Pearce who is Patron of the West Melton Club.

The Mitchell Cup, which is an annual derby played between West Melton and Darfield was held on October 3rd. Darfield defeated West Melton, by the slenderest of margins, winning eight games to seven, with one game drawn.

The West Melton Bowling Club will be involved in a number of competitions, to be completed before Christmas. Centre competitions include 7’s, 3x3’s and Junior 4’s. Malvern Competitions include Women’s pennants and Men’s 5’s.

Southbridge residents have been gearing up for their anniversary celebrations, which are to be held over Labour weekend. Southbridge is hitting the impressive milestone of 150 years and festivities have been pla nn ed to matc h the importance of this commemoration.

Southbridge is well known for its pure untreated water, beautiful gardens and its encompassing sense of history. It is also a haven for farmers who boast that they can grow just about anything in the soil. Production in the area includes dairying, small seeds, vegetables, pigs and salmon, as well as providing rural support for the surrounding area. This opens opportunities for employment which is equally enticing to perspective residents as are the recreational facilities available locally. Recently, the town has also become more of a ‘home base’ for those working in Christchurch which has led to Southbridge housing almost seventy businesses and a

primary school with over 175 pupils in attendance.

Organisers are enthusiastic about the celebratory programme and encourage all who can, to attend. The celebratory programme includes a market, church service, street parade and historical displays.

Both days will also see entertainers and music being on offer to captivate the crowds, as well as food to cater for a range of culinary tastes.
