Darfield High School's Smallbore shooting team performed exceptionally well to secure third place in New Zealand's InterSecondary, Inter-Island match recently. The team consisting of Brogan Baldwin, William Benbow and Hunter Benbow competed against teams from across New Zealand at the tournament. The event alternates between being hosted in the North and South Islands, with this year’s match being shot in Wellington over the weekend of September 26th and 27th. There were a staggering 66 individual shooters making up 22 secondary school teams competing. Year 10 student Hunter Benbow achieved a personal best on his first card shooting 99.2 and continued to shoot remarkably well with his team mates, gaining them a total score of 858.24. Nelson College for Girls took first place with a score of 868.28 and Rangiora High School took second place with a score of 859.31. These scores completed a clean sweep of the event by shooters from South Island schools.

ISSUE 715 Friday 9th October 2015

Darfield High School’s exceptional smallbore shooters: (L-R) William Benbow, Brogan Baldwin and Hunter Benbow. Hunter’s high scores landed him a place in the South Island team who outshot the North Island, 1917.67 to 1905.67. This concluded a solid day of competition for the shooters and led to Hunter being selected for a Postal Shoot against the United Kingdom the next day. The international shoot was shot on English targets and the New Zealand team scored 1925 and will be

notified of the final results once the team from the United Kingdom shoot their cards. All shooters who were not selected to represent their Island shot in a plate match and William and Brogan were part of the winning team with a score of 949.

The opportunity to compete away from home has been a great learning experience for the young shooters. They will continue to receive support and guidance from their Clubs and are already preparing for next year’s competition which is to be held in Blenheim.
