Last week, the achievements of two local referees were recognised at the Canterbury Rugby Football Union’s referee prize giving, held in the Christchurch RSA. Glenn Peddie managed to surpass his array of awards from the previous year (Personality of the Year and Most Improved of the Year, as well as accomplishing one of the highest scores in the law exam). Glenn’s commitment to such an important role within the world of rugby earned him the ultimate title of Ellesmere’s No 1 Referee. Kirwee’s Ross Aymes was also recognised when he was awarded the distinguished CRRA President’s Trophy. This trophy represents a Canterbury wide award and is presented to a member who has made a significant contribution to Canterbury Referees. This year, Ross was not only elected as Convenor for the Ellesmere region of Canterbury Rugby Referees; he also took on the role of Appointments Officer for the Ellesmere region when the other person in this role had to step aside due to illness. The appointment officer is responsible for appointing referees to all games in

Ross also continued to referee games, as well as coaching and mentoring a number of junior referees. Ross’ passion for the sport is apparent by the enormous amounts he gives back to the Canterbury Rugby Union, making the award a welldeserved appreciation of his efforts.

While Hororata’s Harry Cookson expressed a little bit of disappointment at his Turoa run in the finals of the 14 years and under class of the New Zealand Junior Freeride champs it was enough, taking into account his two previous results (at Mt Olympus in early August and The Remarkables, late August) to make him NZ Champion. Another Hororata skier, Henry Freeman also had a good run finishing in fourth place overall at the finals. Freeride skiing has evolved from the snowboarding style of the same name and is performed on natural, ungroomed, terrain, generally without a set course, or rules. The first stage of the Junior Freeride champs for this year began at Mt Olympus - which is Harry and Henry’s home mountain - in early August. Harry came first in this event and Henry was third; “Sadly this event was postponed a day after a nasty injury; a boy from the North Island broke his neck in three places but thankfully is okay,” said Harry’s mother Lucy Cookson. The second event was at The Remarkables in Queenstown (late August) and this event featured a far larger field of competitors. The boys had never skied at The Remarkables, but skied incredibly well in marginal conditions, resulting in a third

For the second successive year Melton Estate and Darfield Bakery have received Excellence Awards for their outstanding Food Control plans. Over the past two years, the Ministry for Primary Industries has teamed with Selwyn District Council to introduce a Voluntary Implementation Programme (VIP) for food safety. The VIP initiative is a way to introduce and encourage food service businesses, such as restaurants, cafes, takeaways and caterers to adopt and implement Food Control Plans. After completing this, the business would be exempt from the current Food and Hygiene Regulations 1974 and would be elevated to a higher level of food safety standards consistent with the new food

legislation, namely the Food Act 2014. Under the Food Act 2014, anyone who sells or provides food needs to make sure it is safe and suitable to eat. Existing businesses will shift to the new Act between 2016 and 2019 and can choose to transition any time
between March 1st 2016 and the end of their nominated transition period. Both Coalgate and Kirwee Taverns have also been proactive and established their Food Control Plans before the commencement of the new Act. They have both achieved their first Excellence Award this year.

Selwyn residents will have a rare opportunity next month to view a historic collection of photographs of Indian spiritual and political leader Mahatma Gandhi. The Selwyn Arts Trust, together with Selwyn District Council, is presenting this renowned international photographic exhibition of Gandhi’s life, at venues in Lincoln and Darfield. The extremely rare 34 photos include portraits and informal photographs of Gandhi with his friends, followers and with Nehru, Jinnah and other major political leaders of the Indian independence movement. The photographs span all aspects of Gandhi’s life, showing him at home in quiet villages, at public gatherings and at formal political meetings, giving the public an extraordinary opportunity to see further into the lifestyle of this great man. Many in India and abroad hailed Gandhi by the Hindu title ‘Mahatma’ meaning great soul. Gandhi trained as a lawyer until 1895 when he was invited to be an advisor to an Indian firm in South Africa. During this time he became a politician, journalist, and a leading figure in the Indian community which was being increasingly subjected to social and legal discrimination on racial grounds. Also during this time he began to perfect ‘satyagraha’ - a form of non-violent protest in times of conflict for which he remains wellknown today. “Gandhi was a figure of historic importance to our world, who led the Indian independence movement,” said Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe. “The values of peace and tolerance that Gandhi personified are universal.” The exhibition will open on Gandhi’s birthday, Friday, October 2nd, at 7pm. A great day was had by all at the Courten ay A & P showgrounds on Sunday, September 27th when Parent to Parent Greater Canterbury hosted over 110 people at a fun event. These are families living with disabilities and it was a wonderful opportunity for some fun and friendship on a Spring afternoon. There were rides on the Darfield Fire Brigade Fire Engine, and on a traction engine, plus gumboot throwing competitions, treasure hunts, bouncy castles, pet lambs and calves, as well as treats in the haystack, a sausage sizzle and ice-cream! Organisers of the event are extremely grateful for the financial support of the Malvern Lions - who ensured that that afternoon was indeed a lot of fun and friendship.

Congratulations to Hanako, Hanako Charlotte and Kathryn who competed last weekend at the St John South Island Regional Competitions, held in Ashburton. They represented Darfield and the Canterbury District well with some outstanding results. Charlotte’s team (in which she was number three) was an Amberley based team, short on a member, but thanks to Charlotte they could compete with a full complement. The team was placed third in communications and first in first aid two. Kathryn competed as a senior individual and was placed third in Communications and written, second in caregivers and first in first aid one and first aid two. This made her the runner up for overall aggregate! A fabulous and commendable result. Kathryn was also in the Canterbury District Colour Party. Dunsandel Young Farmer’s Club had an exceptional result at this year’s Tasman Region Competitions’ Day. Martin Bates was the winner of the Preliminary Regional Hunting and Fishing Clay Target Shooting competition. Selwyn District Council has taken ownership of the forest and Darfield ratepayers pay a levy to support it. As readers will recall, some debate occurred when the original 1.5km track from Horndon Street (the Darfield end) to Homebush Road (at the west end) was upgraded. Since then a wide range of regular users and visitors enjoy it (folk can now can admire the forest and birdlife without the previous danger of tripping over tree roots). After the heavy winter snow the main track and a new ‘loop’ track became impassable, however volunteers got stuck in and cleared it as quickly as possible. Early in winter, Cr. Sam Broughton initiated the formation of the second parallel (loop) dirt track - which is now complete, raked and levelled. User feedback has been extremely positive and it is pleasing to see just how many people have been using it during development and most say they are already regular visitors. It is now complete, having been raked, cleared and levelled. The
loop track branches off the main track close to the Horndon Street carpark. It generally runs parallel and rejoins the main track fifty metres before Homebush Road. Both tracks measure 1.5 kilometres from one end to the other - so a full loop is 3km. A 250 metre joining track connects them both at about the halfway point. As summer approaches it’s expected forest usage will increase significantly with walkers, runners and cyclists of all ages. Volunteers have also tried to make McHugh’s ‘pushchair-friendly’. It’s also worth noting that more users should lead to increased safety, and prompt alerting (e.g. fire warning). Simultaneously with overseeing the new track development, Les Hurford has been coordinating the effort to plant hundreds of replacement Douglas fir trees in areas that were unfortunately cleared by a previous administration. They will reach the size of the current forest in the year 2138. McHugh’s Forest is a Douglas fir (Oregon) plantation, which was planted in 1893. It contains several other types (Pine, Oak, and

AQer a long and inclement winter, Darfield Garden Club Spring Show on September 15th was a cheerful introduc on to Spring. Many members had thought that their spring gardens were a wee later than usual and perhaps there were not going to be many entries. However of course all members had been carefully A stunning assortment of Camellias at the Darfield tending their gardens and wow Garden Club’s Spring flower show. was there a show! There was a beau ful array of yellow from the Daffodils, the Tulips were a bit a thin on the ground, but there was a wonderful display from other classes, with the Camellias, blossom and shrubs in wonderful bloom. The Dr Avery cup for Premier Daffodil was won by Cynthia Bishell and the Premier Bloom was taken away by a stunning Camellia from Margaret Seaton's garden. The most points for cut flowers was a close run compe on between Margaret Seaton, Jackie Hill and Carol Williams. The floral Art sec on was won by Kate Campbell. The speaker for the aQernoon was Steve Busch from 'Trees for Canterbury', who was both very entertaining and knowledgeable. Trees for Canterbury are situated at Charlesworth St (off Ferry Road) Christchurch and he was known to some members as they had helped with plan ngs in Tussock Square, some year ago. Trees for Canterbury was established in 1990 and their three main objec ves are to Employ, Educate and Regenerate. They donate around 45,000 trees to community plan ngs every year, ge ng communi es involved in the beau fica on of their local areas. They are big on recycling and now recycle milk cartons and in turn make their own paper, prin ng with simple New Zealand inspired designs for cards and envelopes. Garden Club members were encouraged to support Trees for Canterbury by visi ng them and purchasing plants for the garden. AQer some friendly banter and laughter over the 'benefits' of plan ng certain shrubs those aPending shared aQernoon tea whilst admiring the beau ful flowers of Spring. Kris McLeish is planning an epic 245km run to raise funds for the New Zealand Heart Foundation. This mammoth challenge will begin in Kumara (November 5th) (south of Greymouth), travel along the Great Alpine Highway, through Springfield, Sheffield Darfield (November 7th), Kirwee and West Melton to the final destination in Christchurch. The run will be completed over three days and Kris is inviting people to join him along the route. There are many folk that intend to do this from points along the Highway, with runners from Waddington, Kirwee, Darfield and a large contingent from West Melton having already indicated they will join him for the final part of his journey, which will finish at New Brighton Beach. Kris not only wants to raise money for the New Zealand He art F oundat ion, hi s emphasis is also on making people rethink their lifestyles, and with good reason. His brother, Scott, died of a massive heart attack on February 4th last year, at the age of only 38, leaving behind a wife and young twins. Scott’s children were born in August the previous year. His son spent 217 days in the neonatal unit of Christchurch Hospital, and his daughter spent 38 days in Christchurch Women's Hospital. “Scott spent nearly every night nursing his son in hospital, right up till he passed away. He was able to spend time with his daughter at home, but never had that pleasure with his son. You don’t realise how much people care about you and how much you would be missed if you were not here,” Kris commented. The McLeish family’s tragic loss is representative of the huge number of people dying each year from heart related issues. Cardiovascular disease (heart, stroke and blood vessel disease) is still the leading cause of death in New Zealand, accounting for 30% of deaths annually. “I'm not doing the run to draw attention to me. I'm doing it to draw attention to the Heart Foundation and their great work and for you to

He has not found the process easy but believes that everyone is capable of making positive life changes to be proactive in preventing heart problems. The Agri-Women's Development Trust (AWDT) builds women's business, leadership and governance skills through programmes and support delivered New Zealand wide, in partnership with industry. Recently they celebrated the developing of skills and confidence of over 1,000 women in five years of operation. Georgie Harper, jointly manages local sheep, beef, deer and cropping farm, Quartz Hill Station in the Rakaia Gorge with her husband and parents. She is also a graduate of AWDT’s course: Understanding your Farming Business. Georgie was raised on the Quartz Hill family Station and has always wanted to farm there. Following school in Christchurch and a BA at Otago, Georgie undertook post graduate study at Lincoln University in the area of Farming Management and Marketing. A four year stint for ANZCO foods followed, until an opportunity arose in 2012 to part-manage the family farm with her husband. Georgie enrolled in the Understanding your Farming Business as she believes it is important to foster personal growth, as well as keep up with the latest technology and industry news. She describes the course as a wonderful foundation to all aspects involved in a farming business, while providing an opportunity to meet other women in a similar situation. She also credits the course with giving her the confidence to bring her own ideas into the business; “Women have a lot to offer in the agricultural sector and a lot of the time all we need to do is have the confidence to start being involved, as well as a partner who is willing to listen.” Speaking at the recent celebration in Wellington attended by more than 130 people, Minister for Primary Industries Nathan Guy thanked

"The huge role women play in the primary sector should not be underestimated - they are the si le nt he roe s a nd big achievers." The enthusiasm and demand for the AWDT courses is apparent in the growth of participants. Beginning with eleven in its first year, the Trust now has 500 women per year participating in its programmes. Programmes which also cater to women who are not fully involved in farming, giving them the skills to break down barriers and get involved with their partners livelihood in a positive manner. More than 200 farming women are now measuring and
monitoring their farm performance and improving profitability as a result of the Trust's Understanding Your Farming Business programme. While Georgie finds it hard to be in a position to leave the day to day running of the farm to go on a course, with forward planning and organisation she hopes to enrol in further classes as soon as practicable. “Keeping up with personal development, as well as ongoing technology and industry news is extremely important to us,” she said. Georgie added; “If you are passionate about it, do it. There is no reason why women cannot farm either individually or alongside men.”

The Canterbury Country Premier Cricket competition is set to start with a full round of matches on Saturday, October 3rd with a new sponsor on board. CRV Ambreed is the new partner for the season which will now be known as the CRV Ambreed Country Premier competition. The competition sees the best cricketers from throughout the Country area compete for the Fulton Wright Cup. Five clubs from the Ellesmere, Malvern area and three from North Canterbury make up the grade. Last year combined senior grade winners, Sefton, will again be the team to beat with new player/coach, Matt Laffey running the team. Previous winners of the Fulton Wright Cup, Leeston/ Southbridge, also look to have a strong team when all key players are available. Country reps Toby Doyle, Doyle Mitch Ross, Ross Sam Baxter and Harry Chamberlain give the team a formidable look with former Country player J eremy Winchester captaining the side. Former Nelson representative Tim Field filled in at times last season but is available for the full season this year. Springfield Sheffield Netball Club held their 2015 prizegiving on September 13th following a great season which resulted in two teams making the finals. The Stormers against South Malvern in the Premier reserve Grade, and their Senior team against the Kirwee seniors. Unfortunately neither team managed to take home the title but they were well contested games all the same. At the prizegiving all the Club’s ANZ Future Ferns were presented with medals and certificates, while all coaches/managers
received flowers in recognition of their hardwork throughout the season. The Club thanks Melissa George - Malvern Netball’s president for accepting the invitation to attend, as well as the much appreciated supporters and sponsors of the Club who have been there throughout the season.
