On Sunday, family and friends of Darfield Primary School came together for a School Plant Day. The purpose of the event was to revitalise the school grounds by establishing a number of new gardens. Although the weather was a little cold and cloudy the school had a great turn out of enthusiastic supporters who quickly transformed the area.

This has been a long term project for the School after earlier in the year Southern Woods appreciatively designed a landscape plan for them.

However, the ability to get the project off the ground finally came with the support of local businessman Mark Vincent of the popular, Burger Revolution.

With his very generous donation, the plans could be transformed into a beautiful reality.

Mark sponsored a substantial $3,000 worth of trees for Darfield Primary School. “The planting was a huge success and there was a great turnout of volunteers. I donated the funds to buy the trees after thinking how wonderful the grounds could and would, look for the children,�

Mark said.

Darfield Primary School principal Aaron Richards commented, "This has been a wonderful project and it is fantastic to see the local community get behind and support the School in such a positive way.

The School is going through a bit of a transformation at the moment with the grand opening of the refurbished classroom block only a few months away. “We are looking forward to seeing the final result,� Aaron finished.

The much looked-forward to Malvern Anglican Parish’s Annual Country Fair and Crafts Day takes place this Saturday morning, September 26th at Trinity Church in Darfield.

The Fair’s White Elephant stall has expanded so much it has become the White Elephant Hall and is now in the Trinity Church Hall on the corner of Greendale and McLaughlin’s Road.

Organisers advise there will be plenty of used furniture on offer this year also, sheltered under the car port on the Church grounds. The used book stall, always a perennial favourite, has become so popular that they too have moved to a larger room within the Church.

All the main craft and food stalls, both inside and outside the Church building, will be joined this year by the Darfield Market. An even greater opportunity to find crafts, food, baked goods, furniture, antique

T he N ou ri sh ga rd en ing programme of Two Rivers Community Trust started a year ago with a 'learn how to graft fruit trees' session. It's that time of year again. Nourish facilitators welcome members of the community to join other locals in learning how to turn a wild seedling into a profitable fruit tree. “It is a cheap and very satisfying skill to have,� said course facilitator Dave Askin.

Imagine a tree with multicoloured blossoms and harvest over a couple of months as different cultivars of pear, or plum or apple (etc) ripen.

Dave has been playing in their orchard for about ten years now and just so there's no surprises, he commented ‘don't expect perfection'. However there are plenty of trees with grafts growing well, so he must have done something right at one time or another!

There will be plenty to discuss, around gardens or fruit and he encourages those interested, to come, participate in the training and enjoy making new friends over a brew at the end of the session.

Chris Bascand commenced in the role of Principal at Glentunnel School in 2006.

Sadly at the end of this term he will leave the area and his role as Principal.

During his time at Glentunnel School, the pupil roll has grown from 38 to 108 pupils. The school was under statutory management when Chris took over, and he worked extremely hard to achieve his goal of reuniting the school with the community in unison with improving the education of all students. He not only achieved these goals but excelled in his role as principal, gaining him a prestigious reputation throughout the Selwyn district.

The School is proud to declare that it is now a true community school.

Due to the expansion of the attendance roll, Chris supervised the addition of three more classrooms, a library, and a new administration block.

Maintenance is continuously carried out and the school buildings and grounds are

always in perfect order and serve as an outward reflection of the order kept within the school walls.

Chris has been totally dedicated to the education of the Glentunnel children. Sharlene Bascand (Chris’s wife) has also taught part time at the School and together the couple have contributed a huge amount of time and effort toward educating Glentunnel’s Year 6 students. Their philosophy has always been that, “it’s all about the children”. Chris has a special gift and always seems to know if there is someone in the community in need, and helps out, whether they are a school family or not. He has also shown proficiency in identifying children requiring assistance and ensuring they get what they need to perform to the best of their capabilities. His continuous quest for the improvement of education is reflected in the very high standards of recent test results.

Chris is an active member of the Glentunnel community. He’s a

member of the Township Committee and has played a huge part in successfully getting ANZAC Day services recommenced in Glentunnel.

Chris will shortly move to Lower Moutere School, where he will take on the role of Principal. He will be sorely missed not only by the School but also by the whole local community. Needless to say everyone in the area wishes him all the best for his future endeavours.

Glentunnel’s new Principal, Dion Stechmann, Stechmann will begin at the beginning of Term 4, and the School community look forward to working with him, and welcoming him and his family to the area.

Last week the Preschool invited members of the local police team, Dave Pitkethley and Tony Beaumont to oďŹƒcially open the track.

This oered an opportunity for DarďŹ eld Preschool and Nursery to thank their contribu ng ďŹ nancial sponsors, Fonterra TraďŹƒc Safety Fund, as well as the dedicated help of several preschool families. Joe Budd (NZ Safety Nets) and local builder Ben Grenfell (Grenfell Builders) who donated a considerable number of hours to ensure this project reached comple on. The children at DarďŹ eld Preschool and Nursery were involved in the ini al design of the track and have watched with great an cipa on and excitement as their ideas were constructed.

There is now huge excitement, on a daily basis, as children test out and reďŹ ne their balance and coordina on skills using either Preschool bikes/scooters or ones brought from home. Not only are children developing physical conďŹ dence they are also gaining skills in communica on and problem solving, as well as having heaps of fun.

During the opening, DarďŹ eld’s friendly local policemen took the opportunity to remind the children of how to keep themselves safe, both on the Preschool track, plus also when using bikes/scooters out and about in the community.

Cinema Paradiso is definitely a jewel in nearby Methven’s crown, and an easy drive from everywhere in Malvern. The current owners Irene and Richard Dodson, along with Richard and Kristine Sheppard have owned the cinema for almost three years and during that time have brought it well and truly into the digital age. A new digital projector, installed last November, has not only created a huge fifty percent increase in the cinema’s patronage, but also enabled the owners to accommodate customer’s desires to see the latest movies, and blockbusters (see Everest - about Rob Hall’s 1996 trip to Everest or maybe A Walk in the Woods with Robert Redford and Nick Nolte), Nolte as well

as independent movies and documentaries (ie Women He's Undressed, Les Combattants [French subtitled]).

Younger members of the family are well and truly catered for during the school holidays when the cinema will open six days a week (from midday) and from this week will offer movies such as Pan, Pixels, Dr Proctor’s Fart Powder, The Martian and Born to Dance, amongst others.

Cinema Paradiso shows movies to suit all ages from their 112 Main Street premises, in Methven, and their webpage carries a full schedule of what’s on and what’s coming. There’s plenty of parking and they assure patrons of friendly, personal service. There’s a licenced bar onsite and small

café for yummy treats, plus the cinema is snugly heated to ensure a memorable and enjoyable viewing experience from very comfortable seating.

Spring has arrived! The Cherry Trees are in Blossom, the daffodils are out and the camellias are in full bloom. Now is a great time to take a walk around the beautiful township of Darfield, using the walkways as a guide. There are two different walks to choose from and both start and finish at the Clocktower on South Terrace, Darfield’s main street.

Managing Staff Performance ‌ ‌ so you don’t need Disciplinary Action Too often I receive calls from exasperated managers needing help in disciplining an employee whose performance has been too poor for far too long. Like a retail outlet whose office person was spending far too much time on Facebook!

With good processes it doesn’t need to get this far.

Typically, a manager avoids conflict and believes the employee ‘will just improve’. Over time it becomes embarrassing to correct because the manager has endorsed it by implication.

Try following this process: • Set very clear expectations from day one - word tasks clearly enough to measure the outcome unambiguously. • Create a desire for the employee to do well - provide a reward (even small) or align to their values • Correct them immediately if they don’t do something quite as you wanted it. Even if it’s small. Make it a positive learning experience - “that was really good - just one thing - can you do it this way next time, please?â€? • Celebrate achievements - most people are not totally self-motivating and need the encouragement of knowing they have pleased someone else. • Chart progress so that everyone can see how well they are doing. This gives continual boosts.

Expoz'Art is a pop up gallery which will open its doors to the public on September 16th. The gallery, run by well-known artists Katrina McGettigan and Michelle Green, is located in the heart of Rolleston next to Snap fitness gym.

Michelle has a lifelong love of art and originally started her career as an artist on the West Coast. She has always been inspired by nature, whether it be the hauntingly beautiful forests of the West or the mighty mountains and lakes of the East. Michelle's spiritual connection to nature allows her to capture and focus this mysterious and beautiful energy into all her works of art. In 2012, Michelle felt she was ready to take the next step in her painting career and cast her eyes east across the great Southern Alps of the South Island into the vast expansive region of Canterbury.

Equally inspired by the Canterbury scenes, Katrina loves to capture the beauty of New Zealand on canvas.

The annual Spring into Oxford event is set to once again entertain and delight on October 4th.

The event is a fundraiser for the McIver's Oxford Community Men's Shed Trust and is organised by the Oxford Promotions Action Committee (OPAC) (www.oxfordnewzealand.co.nz).

The 2015 Spring into Oxford day will have even more spring in it than ever before - with new activities to entertain, being introduced.

Bound to be popular, for both competitors and spectators alike, are the newly introduced Spring Flower Show (organised by the Oxford Garden Club), and Spring Bonnet Competition, plus entry is free for both. Flowers for the Show are required to be in the Oxford Pavilion by 9am, before judging which will take place before the Pavilion opens at 10am. She has exhibited throughout New Zealand in both joint and solo shows and her work has been sold worldwide. Over the course of her career, Katrina has developed a stronger more refined style by experimenting with a wide range of moods, colours and light to depict many landscape and native bird scenes.

Katrina is currently undertaking the challenging task of painting one hundred native birds in one hundred days and will have a special launch on day one hundred of the collection. This project has gained popularity landing Katrina a guest

appearance on The Daily Fix Christchurch's internet TV Channel. Katrina will be painting onsite in the gallery and offers art tuition for children and adults.

The opportunity arose for the artists to open the gallery through collaboration with Rolleston Square and The Selwyn Arts Trust. Rolleston Square is keen to provide opportunities for Rolleston residents, so has collaborated with the artists to provide this space for Michelle and Katrina to live their dream of running a gallery - right in the heart of Rolleston.

The Spring Bonnet Competition, organised by the Keep Oxford Beautiful Committee, is open to anyone wishing to enter, with judging taking place in the Oval at 1:30pm.

As in the past, more than one hundred classic and vintage cars will take over the Sports Oval at Pearson Park from approximately 10.30am. Along with the extremely popular car

display, the fun, family atmosphere is complemented by live music, market stalls and children’s entertainment (including bouncy castle, bungy, pony rides, Adam Allsorts Clown and a multitude of other fun activities), between 9am and 2pm.

Five lucky Selwyn households are now better prepared for an emergency after signing up to the Selwyn Gets Ready website and winning a household emergency ‘grab and go’ kit.

The winners for the Selwyn Gets Ready sign up and win competition are Susan Rogers (Selwyn Huts), Mike and Karen Hennessy (Greendale), Kate Foster (Hororata), Steve Johnson (Kirwee) and Deb and Julian Reynolds (Tai Tapu).

Each kit contains 23 items including a first aid kit, a torch with radio, an emergency tent and blanket, water purification tablets, and a large water container. They are valued at $145.

Kate, co-caretaker of Terrace Station historic homestead, was delighted to be one of the kit winners. “The kit will be kept and used by whoever is responsible for the homestead at Terrace Station.�

Around 120 new households joined Selwyn Gets Ready over the duration of the competition which ran in August. The total

number of households across the district that have joined Selwyn Gets Ready has now reached 6,029.

The Selwyn Gets Ready website is a database which contains contact information of local residents. This information is used by local community response teams to identify who needs assistance in an emergency and who has skills or resources (like first aid skills, generators and four wheel drives) that could help in a disaster. In a disaster a network of community response teams operate in Selwyn with each team responsible for checking on the welfare of their community, identifying what needs to be done in their area, solving local problems if they can and requesting assistance if needed. It is also used to alert residents in emergencies.

Householder’s information is restricted to their neighbourhood support group coordinators and the local community response team and cannot be viewed by the public.

To the Editors: Because Mr Christenson did not reply to our letters, I rang to talk to him. The Selwyn Council told me he is semi-retired and does not work on a Thursday or Friday.

I still dispute the fact they were not aware of the space available in Darfield, as a few weeks ago I attended a Selwyn Council run display of their plans for the future, held in the Darfield Recreation Centre!

West Melton’s Emily Cammock has kicked off the new season in fine fettle, leading from start to finish and winning the CNC2 at Eventing Canterbury’s inaugural equestrian event of the season.

This took place at McLean’s Island, on Sunday, September 13th.

Riding Lewis, Emily put in a smart dressage performance to lead the small field on 35 penalties. The pair had two rails down and collected time penalties in the showjumping, but jumped a lovely clear round across country, over the Richard Crowe-designed track, picking Crowe up just 15.6 time faults to finish on a score of 62.6.They finished well clear of second-placed Sophie Abbott and Time to Tango Too on 74.8.

It was fantastic to see a win for Emily following a traumatic start to her year. She was forced to make the heart-wrenching decision to euthanise her fifteen year old thoroughbred, Dambala, due to injury. Emily displayed that she is still in fine form during this event, going on to win handsomely aboard Double J Remember Back on 31.8 penalties, with the CNC105 A going to Kirsty Jacomb and Street Wise on their dressage score of 33.5.

Now the focus shifts to Eventing Canterbury’s next event at McLean’s Island on October 11th, building up to the two day South Island One Day Event Championships at the same venue on November 7th and 8th.

The Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust has once again generously donated hundreds of young salmon which will be released into the lakes at the Groynes on Sunday October 18th. It’s a wonderful opportunity for all the family to enjoy a fun kids’ fishing day. No registration or fishing licence necessary (Fish and Game provide a whole-of-site licence for the day). Adults may assist, but are not permitted to fish.

Young Farmers from the Tasman region are gearing up for one of their biggest events of the year. The Tasman Regional Skills Weekend will take place on September 26th and 27th at the Mandeville Sport Grounds.

The two day event aims to upskill Tasman Young Farmers and TeenAg members across four main areas: Animal Health, Maintenance, Agronomy and Personal Development. TeenAg is the Secondary School version of Young Farmers and the two have been merged for this event to help smooth the transition from the younger group into the older group of farmers. New Zealand Young Farmers (NZYF) Tasman Field Officer Teaghan Lourie said the inaugural event is the first of many events dedicated to development in the region.

The Saturday is solely focussed on learning new skills from industry experts. The four categories are broken down into eighteen different modules within the categories of: Animal Health, Maintenance, Agronomy and Personal Development.

Each module runs for twenty minutes, except the Personal Development modules running for fifteen more. There are ninety participants registered for Saturday activities and amongst them are Martin Bates, Megan Hands, Alison Dagg, Charlotte Stevens, Daniel McAtamney, David Stevenson, Matt Burroagh, Allen Gregory, Lauren Spicer and Robin Hornblow from the local Dunsandel Young Farmers Club.

Most participants will be camping onsite as a ‘traffic light’ dance is be held for the Young Farmers and a movie night for the TeenAg members.

Sunday morning will see some of the skills put into practise for the Regional Competitions Day, including Debating, Fencing and Clay Target Shooting. The winners of the Fencing and Clay Target Shooting will proceed on to the NZYF National Competitions Grand Final, to be held on 7th July 2016 at Timaru.

Those who are not competing in competitions will be taking part in a range of team building activities.

The league comprised the six top‐ranked teams of eleven to twelve‐year‐ olds from a total of 48 teams throughout Canterbury. This is the first time a boys’ or men’s Selwyn team has won a regional football title, and coach Martin Allen is justifiably proud. He enthuses about how much he’s enjoyed the season and added: “These boys are the perfect example of what can be achieved with the right attitudes.

I am very pleased for the boys that they secured the title, as I know it means a lot to them.”

Following the success of their March Large Cup Golf Tournament, Greendale Golf Club is running a second one on Sunday, October 4th.

Putting into the extra-large, eight inch cups definitely makes the event a fun day out for all involved.

The two teams of previous winners Jack and Glenda Kingi, Kingi Hazel, Isabel and Brian McLaughlin, T. Oakley, L. Robertson, P. ScottScott-Hewitt and M. Hewitt enjoyed their wellearned prize of a night’s accommodation, plus round of golf at Terrace Downs. The winning team’s Stableford scores were 163 and 161 respectively.

Terrace Downs have generously sponsored this event again with the same prize on offer for the winners, so undoubtedly there will be some keen competition.

Tournament organisers have secured a sponsor to provide a

policy, and an eye‐catching style of play that he instils in his teams. Most of the Colts have been together for three years playing for Selwyn United, Selwyn Representative, and Selwyn Talent Centre. While Martin is particularly happy with the title win, he admitted: “For me, it’s more about the style in which the team has played, and about the boys realising that playing the beautiful game the way it’s meant to be played, will bring results.”

After an exciting season, all of the squad’s players have been selected to represent the Selwyn District at the South Island Football T ournament in Blenheim, held early next month.

Four of Martin’s title winning team were also busy with futsal (indoor football) mid‐season, in July. They were selected for the Canterbury team to attend the National Youth Futsal Championships in Wellington and finished a creditable second behind Nelson Futsal.

During the main season, Selwyn Colts scored 38 goals in ten games. This striking goal tally was eighteen more than that achieved by second‐placed Halswell United.

Martin is already planning and looking forwards to next season when the Colts move up from nine‐a‐side to the full eleven‐a‐ side game. He admits with heartfelt humility: “I’m really privileged to see how these boys are continuing to develop both as football players and wonderful young men.”

Finally - it's time to celebrate spring and the perfect location and opportunity to do so has been provided by the Selwyn

electorate branch of the National Party.

A garden party organised by the Branch will take place

Rakaia Gardens - six acres of beauty, and the perfect venue to welcome spring!

at Rakaia Gardens, Dorie on October 4th.

Spring is already in the air at the gardens, located at 282 Awaroa School Road, Dorie, and will be even more so by the garden party date. The venue is close by and an easy drive for an outing.

A range of flowers will be on display in their full glory during the event, including, but not limited to, flowering cherries, rhododendrons, azaleas, winter roses and thousands of spring bulbs.

While the main feature of the day is to give members of the public a chance to view the beautiful six acre garden, a range of activities and stalls will also be on offer. Among them are local arts and crafts, a

fashion show, pipe band, entertainment for children, raffles and a chance to meet Selwyn’s local MP, Amy Adams.

Adams "Three members of a National Party Rural Team, Amy, Jo Goodhew and Barbara Kuriger will be in attendance, looking to

get a feel for the Provinces and regions. This is a chance to talk to these MPs about issues that may be worrying you or just to have a friendly chat," said Selwyn Electorate Chairman John Sunckell.
