Darfield Gun Club has excelled in its sector during recent months, starting with winning the prestigious Vale Shield in July. The team of five shooters demonstrated the depth of their skill by securing the Shield despite the challenging circumstances. The day was not only cold and windy but the targets for this competition were minis. The mini clays are approximately half the size of regular clay targets and a more difficult discipline to compete in. The Vale Shield is keenly shot for and this is the first time that Darfield Gun Club has won the event. The team consisting of Duncan Jefferis, Jefferis Eddy Hurst, Hurst
Tony Stuart, Stuart Dave Folley and Ben Sharp had a combined score unbeatable on the day. Ben is thought to be one of the youngest shooters to have his name on the Shield and represents Darfield regularly. Last weekend Ben competed in the 2015 Canterbury Provincials held in Timaru, a two day event and supported by some 120 shooters from all over New Zealand. The Darfield Gun Club was well represented and featured extensively in the prize giving, with local shooters Jackson Pitkethley, Pitkethley Robert Bampton, Bampton Duncan and Ben all boasting Provincial titles!

The weekend consisted of shooters competing in several disciplines, Double Rise (2 targets thrown at once), Single Rise, Points Score (where shooters receive more points from breaks with their first barrel) and the dreaded Minis, to name but a few. C Grade was dominated by Robert with placings in almost all disciplines and two Provincial titles to boot. Jackson won the revered Minis in the junior category, thus earning a Provincial title, while Duncan took out the Triples title in A Grade. Ben's first day of competition saw him shooting off for first place in Double Rise when he and another shooter equalled on 18/20, shoot offs are as much a mental game as the shooting itself because often the first miss means the shooter is out, Ben went on to win the B Grade Double Rise shoot off and with it a Provincial title. The second day of competition proved to be anything other than a quiet Sunday, Ben shot a near perfect round in the Points Score discipline, shooting 74 points from a possible 75! The lost point was the result of using one second barrel to hit the last of 25 targets after hitting the other 24 with his first barrel. This great score was also equalled by one other B Grade shooter and Ben won the ensuing shoot off, and with it another Provincial title. Single Barrel was the next discipline for the competitors with Ben managing a 23 from 25, along with a familiar scenario when another shooter equalled his score. The talented Ben went on to win the shoot off and his third Provincial title for the weekend.
The Darfield Gun Club has great family atmosphere and produced some extremely welcomes new members. Its talented junior shooters as the junior shooters are fortunate to results from last weekend show have coaching on Monday and the Club’s future looks afternoons after school with strong with these young experienced club members members coming through. September 13th began with a crisp, sunny morning making the perfect setting for a lovely Sunday at Terrace Station. A large number of visitors turned up to enjoy the garden and the woodland walk with Hellebores, primroses and violets in full bloom. Some had brought lunches to enjoy a relaxing picnic on the sunny lawn, and while many of those attending were local, others had travelled from Christchurch and beyond. Many had been to the open days before and several commented on how much they enjoyed returning. One visitor expressed how she liked the garden, “having lots of structure but being different from a typical formal garden”. Another commented on the rare and beautiful flowers, the tranquility and the bird song present”. The hearts of volunteers were
melted when a mum told them her daughter had said, “this has been the best day ever”. Plants from the garden were for sale and these sold out. Cards with images of Terrace Station were also for sale. Though the afternoon turned cloudy and cool, people still lingered, especially photographers for whom the light was good. The feedback was definitely, “this has been a great day out”. Watch out for the October Open Day when the bluebells are usually stunning, making a walk in the woodlands and the garden rather special. The volunteers are excited about Kate Foster of Terrace Station being nominated for ‘Gardener of the Year’ in conjunction with NZ Gardener magazine, and are keeping their fingers crossed she will makes it to the finalists’ list, so that they can vote for her!

Hororata Golf Club’s, Dominic Brettkelly, is one of the Brettkelly exclusive few selected to represent Canterbury, in the Boys’ Interprovincial Golf team. Dominic started playing golf at the age of four when his grandfather made him a left handed golf club from an old cattle prod! This introduction to golf had Dominic hooked on the sport and he has since worked hard trying to perfect his game and gain experience. This has entailed a massive amount of dedication and considerable practice at Hororata Golf course. Matt Brettkelly, Brettkelly (Dominic’s father and local Darfield Physio) said, “he practises every day and plays at least three rounds a week - which is definitely a lot of golf!” Matt went on to say, “Dominic has set goals and he is achieving them.” The Canterbury team is comprised of five U19 players and three U16 players selected to play for their Provinces. There are ten teams involved, and they are split into two sections. Teams play a round robin before the pools cross over to play semi-finals and finals. Last year was Canterbury’s first year attending, as prior to then the event was only played by North Island Provinces. Canterbury finished a creditable fourth last year. The

Dry needling is a new physiotherapy technique Candace from Darfield Physiotherapy has been learning about and would like to explain what it entails. For starters what is dry needling? It is a form of therapy in which fine needles are inserted into specific points of the muscle to release myofascial (muscle) trigger points (knots), these knots can either be ac ve (causing pain referral away from the site of the knot) or inac ve (localised finger point pain). Most knots are a result of an injury or repe ve strain/overuse, but there are many factors that can cause knots including; pain, stress, depression, chronic illness, poor breathing, sleep depriva on, infec on, caffeine, smoking and a magnesium deficiency. How does dry needling help? At a cellular level knots occur at the junc on where the nerve and muscle fibres meet. There are millions of these junc ons within a muscle and when an injury occurs, or if the muscle is overused, the junc ons become ght and adhere to each other. When the muscle is ght it becomes inflamed which in turn causes it to get swollen, ght, weak and painful. This cycle of ghtness and inflamma on repeats causing the muscle to get ghter and ghter. The goal of dry needling is to break this cycle. The needle is inserted into the knot causing a reflex within the body that allows it to relax, therefore breaking the inflamma on cycle and reducing the pain associated with it. Last week three talented West Melton students participated with pupils from numerous Canterbury schools at the Cultural Festival held at Horncastle Arena in Christchurch. The cultural festival is a unique and colourful stage show that celebrates the many vibrant cultures in both schools and Aotearoa. The three West Melton students all entered into the wearable arts category and spent a great deal of time and care turning their ideas and drawings into an actuality. Alessandra Ward, Ward Bella Groen and Brooke Muirsmeath all used locally inspired themes for their ensembles. Alessandra and Bella chose the ‘Wild and Wacky’ category with their outfit ‘Girls Take on Farming Career’. Brooke chose the ‘Iconic Christchurch’ category and created an artistic representation of the rebuild. After finishing the final tweaks to their outfits, the girls waited patiently backstage on the night of the event to venture into the limelight and share their creative interpretations with an

This year’s showcase included performances by seventy children’s groups, representing ten nationalities and from all over Canterbury. There were some fantastic outfits and it was interesting to see other
competitor’s interpretations of the brief. The West Melton entrants said they found the experience, “surreal”, and would, “highly recommend entering the competition; it was a lot of fun but also a lot of hard work”.

When Darfield Preschool and Nursery moved to their new premises almost two years ago it was their vision to use some of the ground as gardens and involve the children in this. Last year the initial work began with the establishment of vegetable beds, herb garden and a strawberry bed. The eager involvement and interest from the children, together with the availability of more ground, has meant this project has continued. In recent weeks under the valued guidance of parents Rhyannon and Brandon Heslop some impressive developments have occurred. In addition to the gardens created last year the Centre now has three large raised beds. At a recent parent working bee the beds were filled with an assortment of composts, manures and top soil. The next few weeks will see the children

The teaching staff at Darfield Preschool are excited by the learning opportunities that this project has opened up and look forward to supporting the development of children who care, respect and value their environment.
The establishment of these gardens was made possible by the generous donations of several individual s and businesses in the local community. The Preschool thanks all those who donated materials as well as the parents who gave their time to help put it all together. Everyone is looking forward to a spring and summer of fun-filled gardening.

On September 9th, junior skiers from Canterbury provincial schools made their way over the Pass to Porters Ski Area and competed in the second local School Derby Race. The race is held annually and brings rural schools together to compete for placings in the girls, boys and mixed team category. While racing individually, the two race times of each skier were combined, with the top three racers, from each team of four, added to give each team a total for the day’s racing. TO BREAK OR NOT TO BREAK The cost of breaking your mortgage fixed rate can differ depending on the following variables. What your current interest is, the term you are fixed for, the loan amount, the term remaining, and the current interest rate either wholesale or retail. The penalty fee very roughly equates to $1,000 per $100,000 borrowed for every 1% fall in rates, for every year of its remaining fixed-rate term. Generally, you won’t financially benefit - just psychologically! The early repayment fee will offset any benefit in interest payments saved unless you have the cash to pay the penalty, in that case there are some reasonable savings to be made. However if you have the cash then it may be beUer just to pay off this amount off the principal. Most banks will not add break fees to the loan amount and if they did, you probably won’t stand to gain in the long term. It is worth doing the exercise, even if it just makes you review your loan and making sure you are managing it the best way. The Two Rivers Community Trust currently have a project running entitled the Community Building Challenge. Teams of volunteers are each building a ten square metre, transportable, temporary cabin, to a high standard of durability. Each team has come up with its own design and has worked tirelessly to complete it. Not only pride is at stake, but also bragging rights, as the cabins will be judged for design and workmanship, with a trophy awarded for the best. The build part of the competition ends on
October 10th, with judging and celebration. It is seen by the teams as Darfield’s own homegrown version of the television programme ‘The Block’. This is reality without the TV! The community building aspect has been as much a focus as the cabin building. The team members are neighbours, friends, and family. An important bonus is that youth are involved and are gaining practical skills from helping in a real project. The purpose of the project is two-fold. Firstly, the cabins will be welcome additional

accommodation as sleepouts. This alleviates the need for families to move house to accommod ate exp and ing whanau. This is a first small step in a developing social housing strategy for the Trust. Secondly, the cabins will be sold (one is already taken) and the proceeds used to fund further community projects run by the Two Rivers Community Trust. Weedons School is thrilled to be placed fourth in the second HP Rural Schools Competition, which has won them $1,250 worth of HP technology. Weedons School’s entry was one of more than eighty creative video submissions from rural schools across the country. The team of pupils and students put together a video as an entry for the comp which was a parody video based around Pink Floyd's, 'Another Brick in the Wall' - instead changing the words to 'Ten Chromebooks short of them all.' To enter, schools were asked to submit an explanation about why th ey n e ed ed n ew technology and how it would benefit the students. Weedons School IT teacher, Patrick Wyatt said, “in our video we wanted to
show the student’s point of view; how they’re being distracted when others use technology in the classroom when there is not enough to go around. We then moved to the teachers, feeling left behind with all of these children and their technology knowledge and the need for new laptops. We then moved to the support/office staff and showed the need for a new printer and PC.” HP Category Manager Victoria Mahan commented that the competition was all about equipping schools with the tools to help students in rural New Zealand thrive. Earlier this year, HP New Zealand teamed up with Rural Women New Zealand to give rural primary schools the chance to win a share of $20,000 worth of HP products
and support. Judges, including a Rural Women NZ representative, had the tough job of narrowing down the entries to five winning schools and Weedons were delighted to be in the top four. Patrick said they will be putting the winnings towards up skilling their teachers through IT support. “We’ve started leasing Chromebooks for our seniors from year six this year with a ratio of one to one,” he added. “It’s been awesome, but it’s a different way of teaching for us and learning for the children, so we felt it would be best to spend the prize money on support from HP specialists who can show us how to get the very best out of this new technology.”

The Arthur’s Pass Volunteer Rural Fire Force have put their new emergency response vehicle to good use - rescuing stranded travellers from a snow storm earlier last month. Hamish Reid, Reid Nic Menary and local police officer Scott Carmody spent six hours rescuing people stranded in Otira Gorge on the West Coast side of Arthur’s Pass, after responding to a call on the evening of August 7th. Around twenty vehicles were stranded, including three buses. While most of the vehicles had already been evacuated, the fire team, along with a West Coast police unit and roading cont r acto r s fr om S ico n Ferguson, worked from 8pm to 1am to evacuate another twenty people. Many of those rescued were Chinese tourists. Arthur’s Pass Volunteer Rural Fire Force Controller Nic Menary said the new Landcruiser ha nd le d th e co nd it ion s exceptionally well, and the team would have never attempted the rescue with their regular fire appliance. “Although the regular fire appliance is a four-wheel drive, it was inadequate for the conditions that night. The Landcruiser muscled through the snow drifts with ease. This day was particularly bad as a layer of ice from the night before was on the road and this received a healthy dump of snow on top. Selwyn District Council provided $60,000 for the vehicle to be purchased, fitted out and brought up to emergency response standards. The Toyota Landcruiser double cab is now suitable for use in
the alpine area of Arthur’s Pass and the extreme weather conditions the area experiences. The vehicle has multiple uses and can also be used for tackling small vegetation fires, spot fires and car fires, as well as providing radio communications, and traffic control at crash scenes. The vehicle carries medical eq u i pm e n t i nc lu d in g a defibrillator, a stretcher and first aid gear. Its fire-fighting capability includes a water tank that holds 200 litres with a foam induction system.

A new 350ha horse-riding area is being developed in the Waimakariri River Regional Park to provide a dedicated facility that links with established equestrian facili es in the McLeans Island area. The trails will be developed in the forest between ChaUerton’s and Weedons Ross Roads and will provide a safe environment for riding away from motorised recrea onal ac vi es. David Owen, Environment Canterbury Regional Parks Team Leader, said the new facility is being developed in response to demand from local horse-riding enthusiasts. “With the Selwyn District experiencing significant growth in recent years, there is now even more demand for outdoor ameni es that local people can enjoy. “We have been working closely with the Selwyn District Council to secure funding and develop a plan for the new area and we’ve met with interested par es and formed an advisory group. Fulton Hogan is also contribu ng to the project by providing direct assistance with staff and machinery. “The dedicated horse riding area will include at least ten kilometres of safe riding trails through pine forest. There will also be plenty of parking for horse floats and toilet facili es, so we’re sure it will be extremely popular with the local community,” David said. The development will be completed in stages and it is expected the facility will be open by late summer/early autumn. The Waimakariri River Regional Park provides a great mix of recrea onal opportuni es and biodiversity and conserva on hot spots. The Park offers the community a wide-range of ac vi es including mountain-biking and walking, trails and trail bike riding, horse riding, fishing and general river access.

Saturday saw the completion of two competitions at the Hororata Golf Club, at Glentunnel. Under clear skies Andrew Kenworthy (18) defeated Neil Robertson (6) two holes up, with one to play, in the final of the Captain’s Trophy. It was a close encounter, decided mainly by a fine day on the greens for Andrew. In the President’s Trophy, Paddy Helmore (11) with a blistering plus nine, on the final day of the five round competition, finished one hole ahead of Graeme Marsh (19) with plus fifteen to Graeme’s plus fourteen. Attention now turns to this weekend’s first knockout round of the four grade Club Cha mpio nsh ips d ue for completion on 11th October.
