In chilly, but fine, conditions last Saturday, a large number of visitors and guests gathered at the new Darfield St John Ambulance station to celebrate its welcome completion and opening.

The original St John Ambulance station, on the corner of Currie Street and North Terrace, Darfield, was badly damaged in the September earthquake and since then ambulance crews and St John Youth Cadets have operated from a number of other buildings in the township.

The new ambulance station, which will be fully operational from the end of September, is the first building built by St John to replace a building destroyed in the 2010-2011 earthquakes.

A dedicated team has spent the last five years designing and organising the new building with all costs being met from existing

funds and new, generous donations.

“St John in Darfield feels truly blessed to have amazing community support,” commented Ian Henderson, Henderson St John Communications Advisor, South Island Region.

Special guests at the opening included Peter Bradley, Bradley CEO of St John New Zealand, and Selwyn MP the Hon Amy Adams.

The Darfield ambulance covers the area from Arthur’s Pass in the west to West Melton in the east and from Oxford, north of the Waimakariri River south to the Rakaia River. This area covers over 5,000 square kilometres and 13,000 people.

The ambulance staff of 24 are all volunteers and in the last year responded to 586 calls, covering 45,000 kilometres and 2,700 man hours.

Today, Friday September 11th, marks the fourth birthday of Jarnia and Jason Kupe’s ownership of the Hororata Village Bar and Café (HVBC).

“Buying a café in the centre of earthquake land in 2011 would not seem a good idea to most,” laughed Jarnia, “but we saw potential and a community that needed hope and love put back into it.” Since then the couple have made the Café Hororata's main Hub and meeting place.

"It’s certainly been a tough road, but a huge thank you to our customers and staff who have helped us keep our chins up and keep trying. The past year has certainly been the

making of Hororata with the im p l em en t at ion of t h e Canterbury Plains Water irrigation system and the support from employees and companies involved with the canal, has made such a difference to rural business. We thank the Fulton Hogan John Holland Venture, Taylors Contracting Limite, Aquaduct, Downers and CPW for all the business they have done through the Cafe.

“The Butcher’s Pie, made onsite at the Café, has gone from 200 pies a week to 1,000 pies a week,” Jarnia said. "We always promised ourselves to keep life interesting, and through events, great food and hospitality, we’ve certainly managed that, making the Hororata Village Bar and Café well worth a visit,” she finished.

Selwyn motorcyclists are being offered the opportunity to develop their skills for free, so they can be safer on the road.

Selwyn District Council is offering twenty vouchers to local riders toward a Ride Forever motorcycle skills coaching package, which makes the training free.

The Council is also hosting a free ‘Responsible Riders are Survivors’ Motorcycle Expo with Christchurch City Council on Sunday, October 4th. At the expo motorcyclists can enjoy a free barbeque breakfast provided by The Rock, see the replica Indian motorcycle used in the Burt Munro movie and hear from Wayne Alexander who built the bike. They can also view other displays, skill demonstrations and have the chance to win a number of spot prizes. The expo runs from 9am-12noon and is at the A & P Showgrounds, Curletts Road, Christchurch.

Riding a motorcycle is much more dangerous than driving a car. In New Zealand, the risk of being involved in a fatal or injury crash is around twenty

times higher for a motorcyclist than for a car driver. From 2009 to 2014, there were eighty crashes involving motorcycles in the Selwyn district resulting in four fatalities and 39 serious injuries. Half of these crashes were due to a loss of control, unsafe following distances by either motorcyclists or vehicles, or turning or crossing actions. For 47% of accidents, only the motorcyclist was involved, while in 53% of accidents either a vehicle or another motorcycle was also involved in the collision.

Selwyn District Road Safety Coordinator, Ngaire Tinning commented that the Ride Forever training and Motorcycle Expo are designed to help educate motorcyclists about safe choices and sound decisions when riding. “Motorcyclists and drivers of cars and other vehicles all have a role to play in reducing the number of crashes. Many of the crashes are caused by motorcyclists or drivers not allowing each other enough space and either following too

Dianthe Rose Barnard had her feet firmly on the ground when she started Darfield Primary School this week. The sun was shining and all was still, a stark contrast to the day of her birth five years ago. Dianthe was born on September 4, 2010 during the 7.1 magnitude Greendale fault earthquake (with its epicentre near Darfield) which hit Christchurch. This gained her the title of ‘miracle baby’, as the news of her safe birth was a silver lining after the chaos that followed this first seismic event.

Parents Maruschke and Evert welcomed Dianthe into the world at 4.41am, on a swaying hospital bed; just six minutes after the shaking began. Originally from South Africa, the Barnard family moved to Darfield after the fatal earthquake of February 22, 2011. Dianthe is described as being very excited about attending Darfield Primary school and is looking forward to learning lots of new things.

The sound of destruction: The pianos being smashed were symbolic of the destruction caused to material possessions and the sounds that echoed loudly during the earthquake.

There was a fantastic turn out at the Greendale Shake Up last Friday, with around ninety people braving cold conditions to attend. The event was opened by Deputy Mayor, Sarah Walters before those present came together to remember the events of five years ago. The aim of the event was to recreate the 7.1 earthquake of 2010 by simulating some of the destruction and sounds that occurred, as a consequence of the tumultuous upheaval on the Greendale fault, five years ago.

The display of destruction was preceded by Ian Warren sounding a whistle at 4.35pm to commemorate the time that the 2010 earthquake started (using pm instead of am to better suit).

This was followed by piano smashing. The piano smashing was organised carefully by Cheryl Ridgen, Ridgen with a strong focus on safety and with protective apparatus supplied

by Taege’s Engineering, to ensure everyone’s well-being.

The pianos being smashed were symbolic of the destruction caused to material possessions, and the sounds that echoed loudly during the earthquake.

Rev Stephanie Wells explained, “we were able to show the feeling of indiscriminate destruction through the sound of smashing the piano.” The Reverend also offered an assurance that, “no useful

The smashing was also used to show those children, who were too young to remember, the immensity of the wreckage after the quake. The sounds of tinkling keys and smashing wood, along with the resultant fragments was particularly poignant for the adults attending.

Pupils and teachers from G r een dale S ch ool als o contributed to the event by providing some much appreciated entertainment.

Composer, historian and author, Rowan Taylor composed two songs especially for this event which were sung beautifully by

the school students and staff.

Greendale School pupils have also been working on a wall mosaic, dedicated to the September quake and using fragments of broken crockery that resulted from it. Sadly, they were unable to finish this project due to inclement weather. However the cold temperatures didn’t manage to quell the spirit of the Greendale community at the Shake Up. While it was decided to abandon the plan to barbecue, due to the cold, the event still finished on a high note after those attending performed an energetic ‘hokeycokey’ to keep warm, followed by community singing.

Stephanie ended by saying that, “a marvellous time was well and truly had by all.”

On September 2nd, BNZ staff came out to support the local community with their time and skills. Working bees were held at Darfield Pre-school and Nursery, as well as Halkett Community Centre.

Ross Hayes, Hayes chairman of the Halkett Community Centre explained, “it has gone from looking ordinary to very smart.�

The BNZ team painted the building, as well as cleaning the spouting and reviving the gardens. Ross and the committee are extremely grateful for the help. “It is wonderful for an organisation like us to have this support and we really appreciate it.�

BNZ's Closed for Good initiative

is New Zealand’s biggest day of corporate volunteering and since 2009, BNZ staff have donated almost 130,000 hours of their time through Closed for Good to give back to the community. All BNZ stores were Closed for Good, and more than 3,000 staff got stuck in, helping more than 500 regional organisations around the country. Community groups and not-for-profits in Canterbury put up their hands to take advantage of the support, with seven projects in all, being run

by BNZ volunteers.

Darfield’s Jess Galletly has a passion for dance and currently tap dances with Footlites Performers - Olivia Rickerby in Rolleston, along with dancing Jazz and Contemporary styles at the local Tara Marshall Dance and Fitness Studio. She attends classes at both schools for a total of more than six hours every week.

On Friday, August 28th, Jess competed in the Timaru Dance competition where she was extremely successful, achieving a first place in the Novice Speed Tap (over ten years) and a very highly commended in Impromptu Tap (any age). “Jess is passionate about dancing and loves every minute of it,� said her mother Genevieve.

Genevieve “Jess practices most days after school as well as in the weekends.�

However her biggest passion is tap dancing and Jess has been tapping since she was six years old. This year has been an important year as Jess has set her goal high. In January 2016 she hopes to attend ‘Showcase’ in Australia, where she aims to compete with her Speed tap and also dance with TM Dance ‘Rock On’ Contemporary Group. In preparation for this Jess has competed in the NZ Dance Awards in June and is competing in the Greymouth Dance Competitions at the end of S ept em ber , alon g w it h

Team Mobico Heart Kids are ready to tackle the World’s most challenging technical adventure race to raise money for Heart Kids Canterbury and New Zealand.

The idea to form Team Mobico Heart Kids and compete in GodZone was conceived two years ago after West Melton team captain Ru per t MacLachlan’s son, Mitchell, Mitchell was diagnosed with a hole in his heart at six weeks old. Mitch underwent open heart surgery at Starship hospital when he was just eighteen months old.

Without the incredible help and support from everyone involved at Heart Kids Canterbury and Heart Kids NZ, coping with this stressful time in their lives would have been a lot different for the MacLachlan family.

Every week, twelve babies are born with a heart defect in New Zealand and while there are surgical procedures that can improve the heart's function, there is no cure for a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD). Heart Kids NZ is the only charity that supports Kiwi children and families affected by CHD, right throughout their lives. Rupert found this support invaluable, “They went beyond and above, right from the moment they found out about Mitchell's heart defect, through to now, six months post-surgery.”

Heart Kids NZ receives no government funding and has to fundraise for all its services.

Mobico, a New Zealand owned specialist IT company, is proud

to get in behind it and the four wonderful people, plus their families, who are taking on this adventure to raise awareness and much needed funds for Heart Kids NZ. Mobico is sponsoring a team to participate in the April 2016 GodZone, the World’s most t e c h n i c a l l y ch a l l en g in g adventure race. The four member team are all seriously accomplish ed en duran ce athletes. They and their supporters are now keen to help Heart Kids and are hoping to raise $100,000 over the next six months as they train and compete in the April 2016 event.

GodZone is the ultimate expedition, adventure, racing experience. The event sees unsupported teams (meaning they must be self sufficient) t r avellin g approx im at ely 500kms, across New Zealand's wilderness, for up to seven days. Considered one of the most technically challenging adventure races in the world, teams have limited time to prepare their maps and strategy, before setting out.

Teams also face additional challenges (such as orienteering) that are set at an elite level to ensure the event provides a good challenge to both brains and brawn.

Along with unreliable weather, spring brings the opening of the Lawn Bowls season! While many have enjoyed the winter bowls offered at the Coalgate allweather green these past months, it may well be said that all keen bowlers are looking forward to trying out the ‘grass’ again in the next week or two.

Kirwee Bowling Club in High Street opens on September 26th (see the advertisement in this issue for further details), and welcomes prospective new members. This Club is renowned for its friendliness and assures beginners of encouragement, instruction and inclusion, as

they get to grips with the game.

(I say this from personal experience.) If it’s not too wet we will have a friendly game and launch the new ones straight into it. There’s no need to bring anything except flat shoes; we have bowls you can borrow and then join us for our customary delicious afternoon tea.

But wait - there’s more! We are also holding a free ‘Have-a-Go’ day on Sunday, October 4th (wet or fine), purely for those who would like to try their hand - whether you’ve done it before or not. There will be a variety of games on offer, thanks to the

support of Bowls Canterbury.

There were some fantastic games played with some very close results, just like finals games should be.

Springfield/Sheffield fought back and by half time the score was even. The second half was pretty much goal for goal and with three minutes to go it there was no clear winner. However Kirwee pulled ahead in the last stages of the game to win by a five goal lead.

While Malvern Netball have some outstanding umpires within their Centre, they were extremely appreciative to obtain two NZ Qualified umpires, out from town, to umpire the Premier Final.

The Junior Prizegiving was held in the morning, with the Senior presentations followed the final game.

The Centre would like to thank all the Netball committee members and Clubs, not only for their efforts during the season, but also for the extra effort in running Finals Day. A big thank you goes to Jeff Strowger, Strowger who on behalf of the Darfield Rugby Football Club, was instrumental in setting up

the grandstands and organising and programing the scoreboard for the day, as well as sitting through a few games and inputting the score.

Centre President Melissa George commented, “I am extremely pleased how the day came together and the

enjoyment had by those on and off the court. Giving away six Tactix signed netballs over the day was also well received. It was a wonderful way to end the competition rounds and I look forward to planning next season and Summer League starting early next year.�

Zumba Gold is coming to West Melton! Zumba Gold takes the popular Latin-dance inspired workout of Zumba and makes it accessible for the active older person, beginners or others needing a lower impact exercise option. Zumba Gold classes begin on September 14th at the West Melton Community Hall.

The Zumba Gold workout uses dance/fitness routines set to Latin and international rhythms but is performed at a lower intensity than a normal Zumba class.

The benefits of the Zumba Gold programme include strengthening the cardiovascular system and helping to preserve, restore, or improve range of motion.

This, in turn, can help with posture which not only makes folk look better but can also help make everyday activities easier to do.

Beyond the physiological component, Zumba Gold is also a lot of fun which can be a huge motivating factor to

keep people coming back. “People get caught up in the music and movements and often forget that they are exercising,� said Kim who has been teaching Zumba Gold in Christchurch for the past year.

There is also a huge benefit for participants in terms of connecting and socialising with others in the class.

One aspect that attracts older adults to a Zumba Gold workout as opposed to other exercise classes is the music. “It’s a generation that grew up dancing,� Kim commented. “To be able to dance and move in a way that’s just fun and non-judgmental, while also having some health benefit, is a win-win situation.�

Kim currently runs a Zumba Gold class at the Village Community Centre in Bryndwr on Thursdays at 1pm and it typically attracts people from their 50’s through to their early 80’s. Kim is excited to be starting up a local Zumba Gold class - see advertisement in this issue for further details of this.
