Hororata was particularly hard hit and in 2011 the Hororata Community Trust was formed with the purpose of rebuilding and promoting the community while recognising the need for leadership in very uncertain times. “The organisation has now evolved to meet the changing needs of the community,” said Hororata Community Trust Chairman, Richard Lang. Lang “While the Trust was formed to help the rebuild following the earthquakes, it has now taken on an ‘umbrella’ role supporting volunteer groups to achieve their objectives; by providing resource, guidance on strategy, promotion and structure,” Richard explained. “There are still a number of community buildings which were damaged in the earthquakes that the community wish to see rebuilt and there is a level of frustration in the community surrounding the politics that are delaying these projects moving forward,” he added. The Hororata Community Trust is currently working with the Hororata Parish vestry and the Anglican Church Property Trust to broker a way forward to repair the beautiful Hororata, St John’s stone church. In the meant ime the Hororat a Community Trust has looked for other ways of supporting the community and undoubtedly the Hororata Highland Games is a highlight of what the Trust has achieved in the past five years.

The Trust is about to launch a heritage project which it has been working on with a community group for the last six months. The first stage of the project will see a Visitors’ guide to the Heritage of Hororata and beyond, brochure published. Numerous other groups were active in the district in the immediate aftermath of the

Greendale Fault earthquake and many of these have also evolved to continue catering for a growing community’s needs. When local members of the Canterbury Mini Owners’ Club, Arch and Trish Youngman set off for a day’s outing to Arthur’s Pass, it was in a car w i t h n o t on l y f am i l y connections, but also a fairly chequered background. Last Sunday Club members left from the Yaldhurst Tavern bright and early, coffee at Darfield’s Doughboys was next on the itinerary, before a stunning photo opportunity at Lake Lyndon - in perfect conditions. Lunch at the Bealey Hotel, before a jaunt over the viaduct and final destination, Arthur’s Pass. The Canterbury Mini Owners’ Club is open to anyone with an interest in Minis of any description, Classic or BMW and has regular outings to various destinations. New members are always welcome and while the Club’s emphasis is not on competition, but on enjoyment - some events do see the competitive spirit very evident! Club Mini drivers just love taking their cars up hills and around windy roads and Trish and Arch are no exception. Their Mini is a 1979 Leyland Mini Clubman; a wee car, with a big history. It was initially owned by ex-local Barb McKenzie, McKenzie but Trish and Arch purchased it from Trish’s brother, the owner at that time. Their daughter Genevieve Galletly drove it when she was studying, before it was sold to local farmer, Peter Redfern for parts. Many years later (around nine years ago) the Youngmans resurrected the hapless Mini from under the trees at the Redfern property and set about restoring it.

On August 30th, members of the Canterbury Mini Owners Club participated in a run to Arthurs Pass. This stunning photo was taken at Lake Lyndon. Locals Trish and Arch Youngman were amongst those enjoying the day - their distinctive red (you’ll have to believe us on this) mini is fourth from right. Patrick Youngman, Youngman Trish and Arch’s son, undertook the restoration and painting and now it’s up to Dad, Arch to maintain it! The couple currently have an ot h er m ot or pr oject underway - a pink 1960 Mini definitely will be a sight to see!

Fostering creativity through the processes of art and craft is something that the children at Darfield Preschool and Nursery love to engage in. When the opportunity arose for the children to exhibit some of their work at the Selwyn Art gallery there were a large number of eager participants. With spring as the theme, the children discussed ideas and then actively expressed their thoughts in a range of creative ways. Some items of work were individually completed whilst others involved a collective process and developed over several days. It was empowering and a highlight for the children was to be able to visit the Gallery and see their works on display. Many families also enjoyed the opportunity to peruse and appreciate the developing talents of their children. Darfield Preschool is appreciative of the opportunity to share their children’s skills with the wider community and look forward to being able to repeat this event in the near future.

A team of four Year 10 students from Darfield High School went into town to compete against other Christchurch schools in a Young Enterprise Trust Bizninja competition recently. The primary aim of the Young Enterprise Trust is to develop enterprising young New Zealanders. They do this by inspiring, educating and transforming students through enterprise experiences. An enterprising young New Zealander is someone who can: • Generate, identify and assess opportunities • Use creative thinking to prevent and solve problems • Collect, organise and analyse information • Communicate clearly and effectively • Be fair, ethical and responsible. Working alongside hundreds of schools throughout New Zealand, the Trust supports them in their efforts to develop enterprising students to better enable each one to succeed in future challenges. On August 25th, primary school students from several local schools participated in the Kids for Kids Concert held at the Wigram Airforce Museum. Kids for Kids is a mass choir event held in conjunction with World Vision and this was the 21st year it has been held in New Zealand. A series of twenty two shows are held nationwide giving young students a chance to perform for their community. The theme this year was 'Slice of Heaven' featuring Jackie Clarke and Nathan King, King along with classic Kiwi songs, enjoyed by young and old. The Pukeko Team from West Melton School practiced for many months and were incredibly excited to showcase their singing with an estimated dozen other schools on the Monday night. In addition, West Melton were fortunate enough to have some students on the front stage in several songs, giving those children an especially memorable evening. Also taking part were students from Sheffield Primary School, many of whom made ‘a day of it’. Keen choir members went to the Kids for Kids practice session in the morning then stayed in Christchurch, enjoying some swimming and walks to fill in the time. The evening concert was a wonderful experience and a great confidence builder.

The Glentunnel School Car Rally was definitely a smash hit (no pun intended), with a great turnout, huge variety of vehicles and better than expected weather. Vehicles participating ranged from an old Model A to a brand new 4WD and even an old bus. Those attending were required to complete a variety of activities along the way, enjoyed a barbecue lunch half way through, and a prize giving at completion. The introductory speech by Scott McIlroy was well underway at the Darfield Rugby Football Club’s senior prizegiving, last Saturday, before the intended recipient of a Club life membership got an inkling that he could be in the running. For Jeffrey Strowger the comment in Scott’s speech about two brothers who played a couple of games for Kirwee way back in 2003, struck a chord and Jeff began thinking the much aspired-to accolade may well be for him. He wasn’t mistaken and those present were unanimous in their applause of his achievement - making him one of only eleven recipients in the Club’s history of over 112 years. Scott pointed out that to gain this level of recognition takes an awful lot of service to the Club, as well as a huge amount of time and effort. He added that most definitely in this instance it was very well deserved. Jeff played for Darfield as a youngster, from the age of eight, and in every grade up to seniors - playing most of his rugby at lock. He started coaching with the Div 3 team in 1996, before taking on the Div 2 team between 1997 and 2001. Jeff took a break from coaching from 2001 to 2004, not because he wanted to but because there was no team to coach or play in, and here the reference to the couple of Kirwee games in 2003 made an appearance, and made Jeff think the life membership may well be heading his way. A season of Div 2 play for Darfield followed where Jeff proved what a great team player and Club stalwart he was - assisting younger players and keeping the side together on and off the field. From 2005 until 2014 Jeff has coached either a Darfield Div 2 or a Colts side - a huge undertaking and a huge time commitment. In 2005 Jeff also became a member of the D ar f i e ld Ru gb y C lu b’ s committee where he held the position of President for three years in a row (2011-13) followed by Junior Club Captain (2014-15 and 2016) and Malvern committee member (2013-16), as well as being responsible for a massive amount of Club work. This

Jeff by this time had taken his place in front of the appreciative crowd and commented, “I feel incredibly humbled and very thankful to the committee for giving me this huge honour, this was totally unexpected and definitely caught me by surprise. Having such an awesome committee, a very understanding family, an amazing group of friends and fant ast ic sponsors and supporters, makes the job easy. Watching results on Saturdays; whether it’s an U7 game or a Division 1 game, is what it’s all about. I guess at the end of the day we all do what we do, because we love the game,” Jeff concluded. Incumbent DRFC President James Scollay commented, “I thought it was very fitting that Jeff received a life membership because no one does more work in the Club than he does.”

The Club held its prize giving on 30 August with a fantastic turnout, but the 2015 season doesn’t finish until this Saturday being the Malvern Netball Centre finals’ day. Without the support of sponsors there would be many things the Club would not be able to do/provide. The Club value and appreciate there contributions. The season results are proof of the hard work, effort and commitment of the players and coaches throughout the season. The Club had a new social team join plus two teams (Xtreme and Eliminators) and many players playing a grade above their age. Eliminators and Dynamite were Round 1 winners of their respective grades, with Eliminators being promoted to the Primary A grade. Semi-final spots were achieved by Flyers, Demolition, Phoenix, Dynamite, Avengers, Illusion, and Fusion - with Flyers, Phoenix, Dynamite and Avengers all playing in the final of their grades this Saturday. Clubs these days are finding it increasingly difficult to fill committee positions, however Darfield Netball is fortunate to have great support from its parents. They also have a few who have no connection, other than their dedication to the Club, and their enjoyment of netball. One such person is Lorraine Strowger (recipient of the Services to Darfield Netball award) who has spent many hours organising behind the scenes, including co-ordinating and running the fundraising catering work the Club has been undertaking during the season. An awesome result for teams and the Club well done to everyone involved. It’s a team effort and this includes all the coaches, umpires, supporters, and committee.

It’s no wonder Netball devotee Lorraine Strowger (above) received a standing ovation at last Sunday’s, Darfield Netball Club, prize giving. Her trophy and certificate are for ‘Services to Netball’ - and it’s this service that often goes on in the background with little or no knowledge or recognition. Every week Lorraine brings warm soup to replenish and restore umpires, supporters and players on the courts, as well as this she also organises and undertakes the Club’s catering and runs the shop - both of which raise funds for the Darfield Netball Club. Lorraine is a tireless behind-thescenes worker for the betterment of Darfield Netball and for the sport itself . No better recipient could have been found for the trophy or for a standing ovation!

A Womble Drive is all about caring for and cleaning up the environment. The original inspiration comes from the Wombles; fictional pointynosed, furry creatures that live in burrows, where they aim to help the environment by collecting and recycling rubbish in creative ways. Wombles were created by author Elisabeth Beresford, Beresford and originally appeared in a series of children's novels from 1968. The characters gained a higher national profile in the mid1970s as a result of a children's television show. The Womble motto is ‘Make Good Use of Bad Rubbish’. Recently, students from Hororata Primary School went along Bealey Road on a Womble Drive. The dedicated ’Wombles’ covered the area from St John’s Church to the Selwyn Bridge, collecting an astounding amount of refuse from the road verges. In addition to their service to the community, the students m ade $ 1, 2 00 t h r ou gh sponsorship which will go toward the senior school camp which is to be held during September, at Hanmer Springs. They have also been fortunate enough to be given the sum of $810 via Pub Charity.

On Tuesday one of the country’s largest irrigation projects, the $375 million, Central Plains Water scheme had the taps turned on. Ironically it was pouring with rain at the time, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the Hororata farmers who now face some future certainty with planning and projections. The Central Plains water scheme, which runs off the Rakaia River, will irrigate more than 20,000 hectares of farmland. Water is diverted from the River into a canal, and is then pumped through a network of pipes out onto the 20,000 hectares of farm land. One farmer commented that he’d waited a long time to turn the irrigators on at his Hororata farm, “it’s been the best part of twelve years since they applied for consents for this scheme, so it's good to finally have water," he said. While many farmers do have plans to convert to dairying, for others it will allow them to intensify their sheep and beef fattening operations. “It will be a major gamechanger,” many farmers

The Kirwee Senior v Kirwee Kaha semi-final was a hard-fought game with the score being tied at the end of the 60 minutes. The game then went into extra time and Kirwee Seniors won by just 3 goals and will now compete in the Premier Final on Saturday against Sheffield/Springfield Seniors. Saturday August 29th saw another epic instalment in the long running Darfield Rugby Club ‘Married v Singles’ Shield battle. While the date of the original shield, called ‘The Froth Blowers Challenge’ is 1948, this went missing in the 1960s. It was returned at a much later date, but not before a replacement was acquired - hence the reason for two shields to be in existence. The last time the challenge game was played for seriously was in 2008, and Club organisers hope to now continue the tradition annually. In control of the action, referee Sean Corcoran faced some accusations of favouritism - in equal measure - from both teams, however the game was otherwise a good natured one. Singles took the win by a narrow margin of 27 to 25 to claim the 2015 Shield.
