It’s five years today when, in the early hours of a dark, bitterly cold morning, most of Canterbury - more specifically the local area, was rudely awakened to a massive jolt that shook property and people in a way not experienced before in their lifetimes. The power was off and while most people had functioning torches, radios and candles etc they were seldom in reach of the bed. News soon filtered through of massive property damage historic homesteads gone, churches and community halls requiring substantial repairs and the straightness of Telegraph

Road and its adjoining fencelines forever kinked, as never before. Many households had to deal with the chaotic aftermath of smashed china, broken windows, burst pipes and foundations not attached where they should be. Fortunately, unlike the then unknown and unimagined February shakes in Christchurch, no lives were lost. P eople h elp ed peo ple, neighbours previously unknown offered support, and heartfelt sympathy went out to those that lost their homes and livelihoods. No one could have envisaged what was to come; the insurance battles, the repairs, the
