The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Hon. Bill English made an official visit to Porters Ski Area last week (August 5th) in order to open the new â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Easy Riderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; quad chair lift on the mountain.

The Deputy PM unveiled a commemorative plaque and cut a ribbon before taking a ride up what used to be the old T-1, on the new quad chairlift; and all in perfect winter skiing conditions.

Portersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; director Simon Harvey (who owns Porters along with four Russian shareholders) said since the new chairlift began operating in June feedback from visitors has been overwhelmingly positive. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a great start to the ski season and Porters is on track to having our best season ever, in terms of skier numbers. We recognised the need for high quality tourism infrastructure in Canterbury and Easy Rider is the first step toward Porters meeting this demand,â&#x20AC;? Simon commented.

More than $7million was invested to install the new chairlift and complete earthworks, as well as carry out other improvements at the ski field. Work was undertaken over seven months from November 2014 to May of this year. The Easy Rider chair is just under 700 metres long, has eight towers and can move 2,000 people per hour.

Porters offers some of the best ski terrain and lifts suited for beginner and intermediate skiers and boarders and the mountain has a wide range of lifts and trails suitable for all ages and abilities.

Porters easy-access road is also an advantage, as well as their close proximity to Christchurch and Selwyn townships. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a major drawcard for Canterbury,â&#x20AC;? said Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism CEO, Tim Hunter.

Hunter â&#x20AC;&#x153;The addition of this new chairlift is sure to increase interest to Porters as well as enhancing the entire winter and ski appeal for the region,â&#x20AC;? he added.

Other improvements in time for this ski season include a new integrated ticketing system, new beginners slope, new T- bar and expansion to the cafeteria.

The News were honoured to be invited, and to attend, the Terrace Downsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; inaugural Global Buffet, which is now a regular fixture on the first Friday of each month. Terrace Downsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Management plan to focus on a different country in the world every month and this first one featured a superb selection of cuisine from, India, Italy and Japan. The buffet table was laid out in an adjoining room, attached to the main dining restaurant, and looked absolutely spectacular with flags of the world adorning both the walls and table. A huge variety of savoury and sweet dishes, along with platter components tempted even the most discerning diner.

The restaurant was full for this first Global Buffet night and amongst those present were a sizeable contingent of Windwhistle School parents and pupils, who had just come off the mountain having enjoyed a fabulous dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s skiing. This reviewer initially inwardly cringed when confronted with such a large number of primary children - enmasse; but they were amazing. They enjoyed the various tastes on offer, were chatty, polite and in every way just happy, healthy, country children! An absolute delight.

If the Global Buffet takes off like the Terrace Downs Sunday Brunch has, then this Friday night event will be fully booked each month. The fabulous Resort restaurant setting, full bar with extensive wine list and a very reasonable cost for the selection offered, make the event an ideal opportunity to get a group together and make

Terrace Downs Resort & Newzengland Ltd welcomed eight students and two teachers from Yumegaoka Junior High in Yumura, Japan on August 6th for some fun filled activities. The students were visiting Canterbury for a week on an exchange programme run by Mt Hutt College, Methven.

Terrace Downs Resort manager Koji Kawamata commented that he was honoured to show the group the stunning views and fun that could be had whilst being in New Zealand. Koji, who hails from Japan, said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;it was a

pleasure to welcome the group, and we wish them safe travels back to Japan.â&#x20AC;?

The group competed in the Mini Olympics run by Newzengland Ltd which consisted of golf chipping, archery and clay shooting. For many of the students it was the first time they had attempted any of these activities.

It was a cold winterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s day so the group made the most of the opportunity to sit by the fire and warm up with hot chocolate and chips, before departing the Resort with smiles on their faces.

They come to town to teach how to cook tasty, nutritious and low cost meals for all the family. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Not only that,â&#x20AC;? Longer term plans include an alpine village, a push into Crystal Valley, on mountain accommodation and bike path.

Further development is obviously dependent in patronage but already the Porters 2015 season was on track to be the strongest yet for skier numbers and revenue. If current numbers continue it’s expected this year will surpass the last season record in 2010.

With mountain snow conditions the best they’ve been in years, and with Porters new quad chair up and running - local schools have been enjoying unprecedented skiing this winter time. Most of the primary schools in the area have ski programmes of varying lengths, and these photos are from Hororata and Darfield Schools’ visits to Porters.

On Saturday, August 1st, Darfield High School held its Hollywood-themed Formal. Over two hundred and seventy Year 11 to 13 students paired their dancing shoes with their best suit, or most glamorous dress for a night to remember. There were many highlights, such as the great music, tasty supper, the ever entertaining photo booth, and the security guard who owned the dance floor.

Another great moment was the sight of the First XV Rugby boys’ impressive Haka!

The Formal Committee dedicated the whole of the Friday prior, transforming the school hall to suit the glamorous Hollywood theme.

On behalf of Darfield High School, the Committee would like to say a massive thank-you to Don Gillanders for devoting a huge amount of his time and many props to help transform the hall to create the theme - it looked amazing! It also wouldn’t have been such a tremendous night without the PTSA who supplied a delicious supper; which everyone enjoyed.

More than two hundred people braved snow and sleet to attend a commemorative service in Trinity Church, Darfield last Sunday.

The service was to remember the one hundred year commemoration of the battle at Chunuk Bair. This attack on the heights of Chunuk Bair in early August 1915 marked the heaviest loss of life by New Zealand troops during the Gallipoli campaign.

As those who attended the Trinity Church service listened, eighteen people read the names aloud of their family members who had fought in World War One. Four letters home were read by family members who were of an equivalent age as the writer making their narration even more poignant. â&#x20AC;˘ The first of these described, from a Canterbury farmerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s perspective, the land and

customs of Egypt in 1915.

The second was the reading Prince Harry gave at Chunuk Bair describing that offensive in August 1915.

The third was from France describing the Battle of Passchendale (the day of New Zealandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest loss of life).

The last one was from a

soldier to his mother asking for there to be no celebrations at his return, because his two other brothers were not coming home.

A travel disruption prevented Rev Susan Baldwin from being present and the congregation thank Lay Reader Peter Cattell who took the service in the Vicarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s absence.

On Thursday, August 6th, Darfield Primary School sent two teams to the South Christchurch Literacy Quiz. The event included students from over 33 schools throughout South Christchurch and Selwyn.

Selwyn District Council has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to upgrade fast-broadband in Darfield/ Kirwee for both community and business use.

Part of their submission includes the requirement to develop a Digital Enablement Plan for the district. The Plan will provide a summary of initiatives the Council and wider community will implement to support the fast-broadband roll out and increase uptake in

internet services in Darfield/ Kirwee and the surrounding areas.

To fully understand the digital needs of the local area, a meeting with interested community members, followed by a meeting with businesses is proposed.

The meeting is to be facilitated

by Stuart DillonDillon-Roberts from the Digital Office, on behalf of the Selwyn District Council, and is aimed at understanding what issues individual areas are experiencing, and what digital

initiatives the Council could consider, to increase fastbroadband uptake, facilitate mobile access and increase digital skills and knowledge in the area.

From August 5th-9th two very talented bands from Darfield High School competed in the Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival, in Blenheim The students have been working together under the direction of their Music Head of Department, Rachel Balchin for the past three years and have gone from strength to strength.

Previously the ’Big Band’ have achieved Bronze Awards at Southern Jam, but this year both bands received Silver Awards for their judged performance.

This is the first time the High School has received a silver in this festival since 2004.

Students had worked hard on their repertoire since October 2014 and in the lead up to the festival had rehearsed for two hours on Friday afternoons and a whopping six hours on a Sunday.

Darfield High School also received the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band Award for ‘Adjudicators Choice’. This was for being a school who embodies what Southern Jam is all about and a fine example of just why the festival is held.

The sixteen member Jazz band ‘Big Band’ from Darfield High School who have done very well at the recent Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival held in Blenheim this month.

‘Big Band’ with sixteen students, play a variety of different jazz styles including swing, funk and rock.

The nine student, new Jazz ensemble ‘Darfunk’, specialises in Funk music.

The two DHS bands joined thirteen other schools from around the South Island. Each school had to complete a thirty minute performance in front of judges, then five performances around Marlborough. Further accolades received were awared to Ellen Walters (Cello) who received the Massy University Conservatorium of Music Award for Most Outstanding Musician

on a Non-Traditional Jazz Instrument. Tom Wilson and Selina Dixon were also mentioned at the prize giving for their fantastic performances.

Each year an ‘All stars’ band is chosen to perform at the gala concert. The ’All Stars’ band is made up of the best of the best from all schools in the festival and this year Tom was selected to play percussion. This was not only an incredible opportunity and honour, but also a valuable learning experience for Tom and an excellent finish to one of the most successful years yet for Darfield High School at Southern Jam.

To the Editors: It is upsetting to read the Council S.D.L.C has approved a liquor outlet, while we have already two booze outlets in Darfield.

Also when you go to a meeting, a) they don't even listen, b) they cut you off talking after five minutes. It seems a decision has already been made, before a meeting outcome.

What Darfield needs is a Super Cheap Auto or a similar shop, with so many cars in and around this area.

Does the S.D.L.C want an increase in drink-driving accidents, domestic problems, drunk youth, wilful damage in Darfield?

Common sense is needed here.

The Ellesmere Rugby Finalsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Day was scheduled for Saturday, August 8th with the committee having spent the week prior getting the field all set-up and everything looking immaculate. Unfortunately the weather didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t play ball and Darfield was covered in snow on Saturday morning - after consultation it was decided to postpone Finals Day, and reschedule to the Sunday. â&#x20AC;&#x153;On Saturday (the original scheduled day) we waited until the melt had started and at 1pm we started snow-ploughing the fields,â&#x20AC;? commented DRFC Promotions Manager Jeff Strowger.

Strowger â&#x20AC;&#x153;We followed this up with a set of harrows being towed behind a loader, as well as another loader pushing the snow drifts off the pitch. A heavy roller from 73 Hire then levelled the fields again - It looked like a construction site for most of the day,â&#x20AC;? Jeff laughed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Satisfied we had done all we could, we finished up at 9pm Saturday night and then woke Sunday morning to find ice on the ground! By 10am we had started dragging the harrows around to break up the ice, before rolling the fields again.
