Lincoln Envirotown Trust

Project Manager Dave Fitzjohn says, “We then look forward to displaying all work at the public exhibition of the completed pieces over that weekend.

This Public Exhibition of Selwyn Schools Waste Art will take place at Te Ara Atea, Rolleston on Saturday and Sunday,September13–14.”

Over 30 pieces were exhibited in 2023 (this event is held every two years), and the

judges were hugely impressed bythestandardofthework.

“It has proved to be a very rewarding event for our artistic students. Our thanks to Rolleston Square Limited for the fact that all entrants will receive prizes,” says Dave.

“Also, they will see their work appreciated in the low-key exhibition which draws many to it at the weekend. Their

efforts are always exemplary and much enjoyed by the public who get an insight into different views on household waste and how materials can be repurposed and kept out of landfill.

We look forward to welcoming everyone to view some wonderful and interesting art overthatweekend.”

ROLLESTON COMBINED PROBUS

In July, we welcomed Murray BradleyfromtheMen’sShedas our mini speaker. The Men’s Shed began in Australia and is partially funded by Government as it meets the mental and physical needs of meninourcommunities.

In 2008, it started in New Zealandandthere are now140 Sheds in New Zealand and 40 intheCanterburyarea.

Our main speaker for July was Richard Gardiner from Scaled Down. Richard, an architectural model maker, makes models of heritage buildings and works with clients who want models of their own homes. During the Christchurch earthquakes, a total of 170, 00 buildings were destroyed and/or damaged and 170wereheritagebuildings.

Working from photos, drawings, architect’s plans, and using all kinds of raw materials i.e. paper, cardboard, OHP film, wood, corrugated cardboard and now laser cutting, Richard produces “scaled down” replicas of either destroyed buildings, beloved homes moved away or future planning for new developments. The models are replicas of old, new, demolished and future buildings and are a unique way to preserve buildings that are partofourheritage.

Our outing for July was to Selwyn Heritage Centre in Leeston. We were welcomedby the volunteers on duty and the buildings on site were identified for us to wander around at leisure. It was set up as a community project to

collect and tell the story of the history of the Ellesmere District and its people. The e ort put into the detailing of the rooms in the heritage homewasamazing.

At our July meeting, we welcomed four new members and continue to have visitors attend most meetings. You are welcome to come as a visitor three timeswithnopressureto join.

Our Probus meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month in the Rolleston Community Centre from 9:45am until 12noon from FebruarytoNovember.

The outing to Holmes Solutions was very well supported and interesting. Their zipline concept is what makes this business so

successful and amazing. They design and test products to go all round the world. A selfdriving project to get from A to B in Queenstown will soon be established.

The Out and About group visited Teece Museum of Classical Antiquities with its collection of Greek and Roman antiques, which was of interest forthosewhowent.

This month August, we had a speaker from Orana Park, to let us know what the new era for

this park will be like. In September, we’ll have trip to the Braintree Wellness Centre, which will also test our minds assuch, andatriptoRavenscar HouseMuseum.

Come along and join our group on the third Tuesday of the month at the Rolleston Community Centre. We also run a co ee morning every secondThursday.

WHEN TO CALL THE LAWN EXPERTS

When to seek professional help:

• If you're seeing widespread discolora on (yellow, brown, or black spots), thinning grass, or signs of fungal growth (mushrooms, mold) and these symptoms don't improve with basic treatments, it's me to call in an expert

• If you no ce chewed-off spots, holes in leaves, or if the turf can be easily pulled up (indica ng grubs), professional pest control may be needed

• Issues like compacted soil, poor drainage, or persistent brown patches that don't respond to aera on or other common fixes require professional assessment and poten ally more advanced solu ons like regrading or drainage

• Rings of mushrooms, dark green patches, or areas of thinning grass could indicate fairy ring, which may require specialized treatment

• If you've tried basic lawn care techniques (like watering, fer lizing, and aera ng) and your lawn is s ll struggling, it's me to call in experts who can offer tailored solu ons

• If your lawn is in very poor condi on, a professional can assess whether it needs to be re-laid or re-seeded, and advise on the best approach. Why early interven:on is important:

• Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent minor issues from escala ng into major problems that are harder and more expensive to fix

• Addressing problems early can save you from the frustra on and expense of trying to fix a severely damaged lawn

• Professionals can iden fy underlying issues and recommend appropriate solu ons to promote healthy and sustainable lawn growth.

SPRING GARDENING TIPS

With spring just around the corner there's plenty to do in the garden. It's me to start thinking about preparing and planning for spring plan ng, including sprou ng your seed potatoes to ensure a Christmas harvest. August is also the perfect me for a winter dy up - clip the hedges, edges and prune a selec on of fruit trees. For any lawn issues, contact any of the lawn experts that are adver sing g in this feature.

Vegetable garden :ps:

• Plant beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, peas, mesclun, onions, silverbeet, spinach, coriander, parsley, rosemary, sage, and thyme.

• LeNuces - early-season leNuces and other salad crops can be plantedin colder areas you may want to use poly tunnels or protec ve cloches.

• Potatoes - begin sprou ng seed potatoes. Most potato crops take about three months to mature, so need to be in the ground in September for a Christmas harvest.

Flower garden :ps:

• Plant roses, gladiolus, paper daisies, dahlias in frost free areas (even though dahlias are hardy once established, new plants are not always tolerant to frost) hebes, lavender, lavatera, nemesia, azaleas, rhododendrons, violas, kale, bellis, calendula, clema s.

• Prune to dy up the garden before new growth appears in the spring. If you are not sure what your plants are, a general rule of thumb is to prune aIer flowering, not before.

• Keep on top of weeds to prevent major problems with them in spring. Weed empty garden beds as soon as anything appears.

• A thick layer of mulch will control and even kill some small weed plants.

ROLLESTON GARDEN CLUB

This month, the weather has been a bit beNer to get out and do a liNle in thefreshairinthegarden.

Frosts have been out and aboutdoingtheirbusiness like killing the nasty bugs, that may affect the spring growthhopefully.

Springisnotfarawaywith daffodils, and miniature Iris Re culata showing some colour in the garden.

We have just had our AGM and 30th birthday. We s ll have a few original members which is great, many have come and gone a few to that great Garden in the Sky, but we thank them all for giving us this great liNle club to help folk on the way of producing good food and lovely flowers forusalltoadmire.

Theprogrammeforyearis not sorted completely yet

but you will be informed in the next News. There is plentyofgrowthoutthere with weeds and even lawnsareshowingsignsof a light mow, so get out there and enjoy. A bit of general fer lizer on all gardens now is good for springgrowth.

Onions can be planted along with some spinach, always good for a change of salad mix. My onions are up even though we had a lot of rain aIer I planted them. Pop in some brassicas, which are easily picked up in the garden centres, if you haven't planted some seedsintrays.Cucumbers, tomatoes zucchini, eggplant seeds in trays in a warm spot, along with many of your flower annuals too. If you want instant plants to give you early colour, go to the garden centres as they

have them out now. HappyGardening.

TheRollestonGardenClub meets on the second Monday of the month at theStJohnsrooms.

BENEFITS OF AT-LARGE COUNCILLORS

A mixed representa on model:

• Allows wards to reflect communi es of interest without compromising the overall size of the council;

• Recognises the strong sense of district-wide iden ty reflected in the Council’s community of interest research;

• Acknowledges strong paNerns of movements for residents across ward boundaries and out of the district for employment, educa on, and recrea onal ac vi es;

• Allows representa on for district-wide communi es of interest without a geographical base, for example, youth, young families, and businesses;

• Provides a greater range of choice for rural electors of the Tawera Malvern and Te Waihora Ellesmere Wards, allowing them to vote for three councillors rather than a single ward councillor.

My business has supplied support to major New Zealand projects over the last two decades including: Te Kaha, Tūranga, Christchurch Town Hall, Civic O ces, New Integrated Airport Terminal and Control Tower as well as theDunedinStadium.

Candidates for Mayor (1 Vacancy)

Lydia Gliddon

My principal place of residence is in the Selwyn District Council area.

I’m standing for Mayor because Selwyn deserves leadership that listens, empowers, and delivers. I believe in working alongside our community to strengthen trust and transparency in council decision making. When people are heardandprocessesare open, weallbenefit.

My background in business and agriculture gives me a grounded perspective, and my time on Council has proven my commitment to Selwyn. I’ve served on the front lines of community

conversations and understand the pressures our residents face.

I’mcommittedtoputtingpeoplefirst.

Selwyn is growing rapidly, and with that growth comes responsibility. We must ensure growth pays for growth, rates are fair, and community voices are genuinely valued, not just whenconvenient.

I want to see councillors empowered to do their jobs, budgets properly scrutinised, and the public involved every step of the way. I’ll bring back principled, people first leadership that restorestrustinlocalgovernment. lydiaformayor@gmail.com | 027 725 4152 lydiaformayor@gmail.com 725 4152

Sam Broughton

My principal place of residence is in the Selwyn District Council area.

Kia ora. I love Selwyn and I’m proud to serve as your independentMayor.

I’ve focused on delivering real, tangible progress, better roads, upgraded water networks, and new sports and community facilities delivered on time, on budget, and without losing sight ofwhatmakesSelwyn special.

I’ve always believed my job is to give you a voice, listening to what matters and making council work better for our communities. Selwyn is thriving. We’ve kept housing a ordable, backed local jobs, and helped 2,000 new businesses launch in just 3,000 days.

I don’t like rate rises any more than you do, but after years of inflation and under investment, increases were unavoidable. I am committed to future rates rises beingbelow7%.

With 8 out of 10 Councillors stepping down, now is the time forprovenmayoralleadership.

I am ready to keep delivering success for Selwyn, and appreciateyourvote.

Sophie McInnes

As your councillor for the last 6 years, I am an active, accessible point of contact via the Rolleston Residents’ Association, at local events, in the community, andonline.I’m alwaysreadytodiscuss concerns with both respect and realism, because weighing up one person’s “nice to have” against another’s “essential service” isneverassimpleasitsounds.

Sofar on council, I’ve servedasdeputychair ofthe Infrastructure & Transport committee and chair of Housing & Urban Development, supportingintergenerationalinitiatives like Future Selwyn spatial planning, the Reconnect waste management project, andtheYouth&OlderPerson’sHub.

My commitment is reinforced by a Masters in Environmental Policy & Management from Lincoln, and membership of the Institute of Directors. Both are deeply relevant to making tough decisions that balance today’s needs with the challenges of population growth, environmental protection, and community resilience.

Our familyhaslivedlocallysince 2013- we work, learn, playand volunteer in this amazing district, and have seen the changes to Rolleston andbeyondfirst-hand.It’sbeen an honourtorepresent you since 2019, and in 2025-2028, I will continue to advocate for a ordable, proactive investment, and ensure that Selwyn respondse ectivelytogovernmentreforms.

Avi Aulaki

My principal place of residence is in the Kā Mānia Rolleston Ward area. I am running for Councillor because young people, renters, and everyday residents deserve more than to be left on the sidelines. Nearly 45% of Rolleston is under 35, yet we have zero youth voices on council. I’m 18, but I’ve already clocked over500hoursofvolunteering,fromrunningfreeBhangradance fitness classes to co-leading cultural and youth events that build communityfromthegroundup.

I’m not here to tick boxes or make vague promises. I’m here because I live what I stand for, that being real representation, smart spending, improving public transport, and a council that listens before it acts. Rolleston is growing fast. We need leadership that reflects who we are now, a younger, more diverse, and ready for the future. I am standing again for the regional council, having served two terms as your councillor. Over this time, I have led the council’s work on river management andresilience. We have begun shifting to a whole-of-catchment approach, enabling our rivers teams to plan, design, and build stronger protection from floods in our changing communities. This is a vital core service, and I am proud of theleadershipIhaveprovided.

In Selwyn, the catchment blueprint is nearing completion. Once finalised, it will allow priorities to be set and work to move from planning into practical implementation. At the same time, I have consistentlyarguedthat thecouncilmust bettermanage fundingtoreducepressure on ratepayers. Rates can be curbed by cutting programmes that deliver little value and by becoming more e cient in how money is spent. While progress is being made, I remain firm that funding should notgotoinitiativessuchastheyouthwingoftheGreenParty.

We are also exploring new ways of achieving community goals, such as a private provider supplementing bus services between Rolleston and Christchurch. I believe council must focus on its core functions, spend responsibly, and deliver results. I am committed to continuing that work onyourbehalf. ian.mackenzie@akaunuifarms.co.nz | 027 432 8329 ian.mackenzie@akaunuifarms.co.nz 027 432 8329 027 8329

Dr Peter Trolove

I’m a 5th-generation New Zealander, 73 years old, and proud to call Canterbury home. I grew up on a farm near Ashburton and have spent 50 years working as a vet across Ashburton and Selwyn. That work taught me the value of science, listening, and practicalproblem-solving.

These days I live at Rakaia Huts, where my love of rivers and the outdoors shapes my daily life. I’m passionate about fishing, protecting our environment, and making sure future generations inheritaCanterburywecanbeproudof.

Over the years I’ve spoken up when decisions threatened our rivers, and I’ve gathered my own water-quality data to keep authorities honest. Too often I’ve seen spin instead of straight answersaboutpollutionandover-allocation.Thathastochange. I’m not a career politician. I’m a local, independent voice who will represent all ratepayers - rural andurban - fairly. My focus is on clean water, fair use of resources, and decisions made in the open.

I’m standing because I care deeply about this place and the people in it. I’ll bring experience, honesty, and the courage to speakupforourcommunity.

It is a privilege to have represented Mid Canterbury, Selwyn and Ashburton Districts for the past three terms. I am a registered paramedic and farmer with a strong science base. I understand the challenges our communities continually encounter, especially accessing clean water for drinking, swimming, and safety. During this term I have achieved on your behalf improved water and river management, contributed nationally to the new Emergency Managment bill and AF8 planning, successfully advocated for better acceptance of Selwyn’s public transport needs along with achieving a 5.8% rate increase. Our biggest forward challenge is consenting costs, timeframes and conditions. My hope and focus for the next term, with the reform of Resource Management and freshwater policy is to drive reduced regulatory burdens, empower and enable our communities, catchment groups and landowners to achieve positive outcomes for our environment andsurroundings.

Thank-youagain,asIseekyourfurtherendorsementandsupport.
