On Sunday, October 29th, The Friends’ of Darfield Hospital together with Nurse Manager Leanne Davie and her staff, held an Open Afternoon to celebrate the ninety years of splendid service provided by the Hospital and its many staff members, to the local community. The hospital officially opened on May 27th 1927.

Invited guests included Mayor Sam Broughton, Broughton local Member of Parliament Hon Amy Adams, Adams Win McDonald representing the C.D.H.B., and several local body and health sector personnel. It was pleasing also to have good

support from local residents.

It added a special touch to the celebrations, to have present two special people, who were born at the hospital during the very first year. Zelda Walker nee Jenkins, Jenkins was the very first baby born at the hospital. Records indicate that Zelda was born on May 15th, which was twelve days prior to the official opening of the facility. Vera Brosnahan nee Clinton, Clinton is registered as the tenth baby born on September 1st. We are most grateful to their respective families for enabling them to be present.

The resident doctor at the time, was Dr David McMillan who served at the hospital until 1928. It was especially pleasing that Dr McMillan’s remaining daughter Bryony, Bryony could be present with us for the afternoon.

During the official part of the afternoon, first year babies Zelda and Vera, assisted by Past President of The Friends of Darfield Hospital, Patricia

Henderson, Henderson cut the 90th Anniversary Cake to recognise the special milestone. Pieces of the beautifully baked and decorated cake were later distributed among all those present. Bryony McMillan assisted by our Patron Marjery White, White then planted an Anniversary rose as a more lasting memory of the milestone.

raise valuable funds for future projects. This included some stalls, selling tickets in a Christmas hamper raffle, the auctioning of some generously donated items and having an afternoon tea available.

Other special features of the afternoon included a recital by pupils of the Malvern School of Music, guided tours through the hospital building, and excellent displays of memorabilia.

The Friends thank everyone who attended, those who so willingly provided their special services both on and prior to the day, and we commend our very generous community for its outstanding support both of the event, and over many years.

Since opening its doors seven years ago, Specsavers Hornby has provided its customers with professional eye care and exceptional customer service, administering over 50,000 eye tests and nearly 60,000 pairs of glasses and prescription sunglasses.

Co-owners Optometrist Suney Cheung and Dispenser Lynsey Parkin are continuing this legacy, with over twenty years in optometry between them.

Lynsey has been with the Hornby store since its doors opened, with Suney joining mid way through this year, having previously worked in the Hornby community and also Specsavers, Westfield Riccarton.

The whole Hornby team encourages the community to prioritise health and proactively schedule necessary health checks, including an eye test, as part of a ‘health warrant of fitness’.

A recent survey commissioned

by Specsavers revealed that more than one million New Zealanders have not had an eye exam in the past two years, despite recommendations.

Lynsey stresses the importance

of regular testing, and commented, “it’s essential to have your eyes tested every two years to track any changes in eye health that may be occurring, even if you aren’t concerned about any changes in vision or don’t wear glasses”.

“A Specsavers comprehensive eye exam includes free Digital Retinal Photography. It can provide insight into other health issues including blood pressure and diabetes, on top of sightrelated conditions,” Lynsey added.

Suney, who is passionate about children’s eye care, also wants to encourage parents to bring their children in-store for an eye test.

Suney said. “Many parents are unaware that several long term eye issues can potentially be prevented, or treated, if detected by an eye specialist before a child turns eight. We invest a lot in the latest technologies so we can offer specialised services for children.”

Recent Specsavers research found that children in particular are spending the equivalent of a full time job (35 hours a week) staring at screens. Spending too much time in front of electronic devices indoors can cause serious, long-term, damage to young eyes.

November 5th dawned bright and sunny making it a perfect day for garden lovers to view the six magnificent gardens on display as part of the Hororata Primary School’s Garden Tour.

The garden tour, took place in the general Hororata area, was organised by the Hororata Primary School PTA and was the school’s big fundraiser for the year. The whole day was a huge success and raised an outstanding amount which will be used to fund projects in and around the School.

The public enjoyed a wonderfully diverse range of gardens from floral displays in full bloom,

spectacular landscapes and some amazing layouts.

As well as the visually appealing gardens on show there was also a display of children’s art work which was enjoyed by many, plus food was available at the Guillaumedowns venue.

Raffle tickets and plants for sale also boosted the PTA’s coffers and were well supported by those attending the event.

The whole fundraiser would not have been possible without the wonderful helpers who assisted and worked so hard on the day ensuring it was enjoyable for those who attended.

Without the support of the generous property owners who opened up their gardens to the public the event could not have gone ahead and organisers thank them for their participation.

Commented on was the noticeable amount of work and love put into the gardens, bringing joy to both owners and viewers alike.

Event organisers sincerely thank the owners of Arbourlea,

Haldon, Downs Road Garden, Yarrabee Downs, Guillaumedowns and Terrace Station for their part in the Garden Tour and fundraiser.

The PTA are looking to run this event biennially and are already thinking about the next tour while the garden owners are no doubt taking some welcome respite from the labours necessary to prepare for this one!

Local eleven year old, Tyler Wiremu, Wiremu is following in his father, Dion Wiremu’s, Wiremu footsteps on the Motocross circuit.

Showcasing his skills and maturity while winning the premier grade of the nine to eleven year 65cc class in the New Zealand Mini Motocross Championships at Moore Park, in West Melton, on Saturday, and Sunday, November 4th and 5th.

Riders aged between four and eleven riding bikes with engine capacities anywhere between 50cc and 112cc, headed into battle when the Christchurch Off -Road Motorcycle Club hosted the two-day event.

Tyler, who is trained by Tauranga based, former World Champion, Ben Townley, has been racing in motocross events since he was four years of age (and riding since he was three) and now competes at least once a month around the country.

“To make things more efficient

Tyler has a race bike in the North Island and a race bike in Australia, so it is easier to compete at events where the competition is broader,” Dion explained.

In this championship competition Tyler won every race by big margins, winning the second race by thirty-six seconds which is not common at a National event. He went on to lap up to fifteenth place, out of thirty riders, before finishing the race. His lap times were on average five to eight seconds faster than second place, but survival of the bike’s engine became important during race two, so he had to pace himself for the remainder of the day.

“Tyler really enjoyed the event with his friends and extended family present,” Dion commented. “The only pressure on him came after race two on Saturday when we confirmed an engine problem that could at any point bring his championship efforts to a halt.

A late night effort was needed to limit the risk of engine failure, although the problem remained throughout Sunday. Tyler did only what he needed to in order to win the races and pace the bike which showed the maturity and race-craft he has developed over the years. His mum and I were very pleased to see it show at such a critical time,” Dion proudly explained.

Tyler’s next focus is on the New Zealand Junior Motocross Championships in the 85cc class to be held in Mosgiel during April 2018. He will then be heading to Australia to race the popular Hattah Desert event and then the Australian Junior Motocross Championships to be held in Tasmania during October 2018.

“We are very lucky to have people around the country, and in Australia, help us out with Tyler’s racing, we have some great people vested in Tyler’s future,” Dion concluded.

Last week past and present staff of Annabel’s Educare joined Annabel Sloss (the Centre’s owner) for a special celebration to farewell longserving staff member, Kristine Daly from Annabel's.

Kristine has taught at Annabel's since the Centre opened seventeen years ago, beginning as a support teacher before moving into a teaching role and undertaking the profiling and planning for children's learning.

During her seventeen years at Annabel’s, Kristine has taught in both the over two year old area, as well as in the nursery (under two) of the Centre and has used her amazing artistic and creative skills during these years to create stunning interactive visual learning environments for the children.

Kristine leaves Annabel's to pursue her passion in creative arts and, among other initiatives, will be providing art and craft workshops in the

near future.

“While we will dearly miss Kristine, we know we can still call on her expertise in the future,” said Ceri Foote, Foote Annabel’s Educare, Area Manager.

Anna presented Kristine with a voucher from The Selwyn Art Gallery for Kristine to choose a piece by her favourite artist.

Kristine was also presented with a book of memories portraying her work with the children, photos of some of the amazing environments she has created, as well as memories of some of the 'social' activities with her colleagues at Annabel's.

Christmas parties, wine trail trips, Wellington to the WOW festival, golf day, Flock Hill weekend, and dress-up Granny's afternoon were all featured and brought forth many smiles from those attending the farewell.

“We wish Kristine all the best for her new adventure,” Ceri concluded.

Darfield Junior Touch was established in 2015 by Terina Graham, Graham Joseph Wineera and Nic Kelly, Kelly with the programme intended for four to fourteen year olds. The trio split those attending into three groups with a focus on fundamental development through adapted games, to learn key skills for Touch. Joseph said, “initially we thought the programme would attract a couple of dozen locals, but on the first day over sixty children showed up!”

After an overwhelming experience the following year (2016) more parent helpers stepped up to ensure the large numbers of over ninety children could be catered for.

This year Terina and Joseph adapted the programme for the benefit of the children that have participated over the past two years. Focussing on learning through play, the age group was narrowed from Year 2’s to Year 8’s. Teams were mixed by gender and ability and have assigned coaches. They meet

every Wednesday at 5:15pm to spend fifteen minutes warming up and concentrating on a specific skill with their coach that they then take to their twenty-minute game. The duo organised Touch singlets for all teams to signify the importance of Junior Touch in the area and provide young players with a sense of belonging to the sport they love.

Terina and Joseph both started playing Touch in the early 90s when there were seven players on the field and a try was scored by jumping over the line.

Both have played competitive Touch from a young age; Joseph for Taranaki and Terina has represented Nelson, Wellington, and Canterbury in Youth, Opens and Masters, as both a mixed and women’s player. Terina explained, “I’ve had plenty of coaches, some good, some terrible but only one (from Wellington) that truly helped me understand the game of Touch and how strategic it is, and why we learn certain things to

improve our game. I was thirty when I had the privilege of being coached ‘properly’. It highlighted the importance of not only having a great coach, but having this exposure from as early as possible. Joseph and I are still developing ourselves as coaches and mentors and we’re extremely lucky to have a good number of dedicated helpers willing to come on the journey and do their part to coach the kids with support from the Darfield Touch Committee; Tim McNae, McNae Tim Wright, Wright Victoria Leech, Leech Chloe Neil and Pete Thomas.”

Halloween on October 31st saw much trick or treating activity in the townships of the area. Some homes put out signs and balloons welcoming the youngsters, while other groups just stuck to the streets in which they lived and where they knew the neighbours.

In Kirwee the local community coffee group, ‘Kirwee Kids’, incorporated their Halloween Party with their regular Tuesday coffee morning session. The hall was appropriately decorated for the event and while there were loads of treats, tricks were absent!

“A logger, fairy, two witches, little red riding hood and a pumpkin as well as ‘Payton Payton’ Payton as himself (Bob the Builder), even some adults dressed up too,” said one of the event’s organisers.

“A big thank you to the Malvern Community Board for their financial support towards the setup cost of this Group,” they added.

On Saturday evening five volunteers of the local Malvern Community Patrol were out patrolling Darfield Township and the greater Malvern area. While most of us are tucked up in bed, late in the evenings and in the weekends, these good folk are out patrolling our communities helping to keep us all safe.

The Malvern Community Patrol do a great job and their work is appreciated by both the community and the local Police.

We are entering into the summer season now and during the last week in particular, the land and pastures have started to dry out dramatically.

If anyone is planning to light fires (controlled burns) in the near future please take into consideration the weather forecast and in particular the predicted winds; plus observe and be present at all times.

To the Editors: The recent Malvern News Police Report emphasises that our local volunteer firemen are all heroes and this cannot be disputed.

The ford on Homebush Rd is a trap for all. About four months ago a young lady got her van bogged in the loose shingle in this ford and I towed the van back on to solid ground. Since then at least four other vehicles have had to be towed, usually by local farmers.

I have lived in the Darfield area for over 25 years. During that time three bridges have been built on Bealey Road, but the ford on Homebush has always been in its present state. The loose shingle tends to move easily under the wheels of a vehicle and it does not take much for it to become bogged.

It is high time that something was done to improve this ford.

Selwyn District Council staff will tell you that there are ‘Ford Closed’ signs on either side of the ford, but people either don't see them or choose to ignore them. The Hawkins River is bridged on at least five other roads, and most of the other local rivers have suitable bridges, or concrete fords and I suggest that the Homebush Road ford should be up-graded in a similar way.

On Tuesday, October 31st, Two Rivers Community Trust hosted a fun filled and free, Roller Disco Light Party at the Darfield Recreational Centre. An event thoroughly enjoyed by those that attended. Adorned with a variety of glow stick treats and with some colourful and creative dressing up, children (and a few adults!) enjoyed skating and playing games led by Ingrid from PhatSk8 Roller Discos.

“It was wonderful seeing so many trying out skating for the first time and seeing their initial wobbles and faces contorted with concentration, turning into proud smiles, as they got the hang of it,” said event organiser Kelly Maude.

Maude One of the fun games was ‘Limbo on Skates’, which involved queuing up to skate under the limbo stick as it got lower and lower.

“The Malvern Community Hub also greatly appreciated the donations made to the food bank at the event, especially being so close to Christmas, and we wish to thank those attending for their generosity.”

Many families commented on the great atmosphere and said

they would love to see this becoming an annual event as an alternative to trick or treating on Halloween. Two Rivers Community Trust are certainly planning to run a similar event next year.

“In the meantime, preparations have already begun for the Waitangi Day Community Fun Day on Tuesday 6th February 2018 - we look forward to seeing you there,” Kelly concluded.

Tim McNae and Chloe Neil are proud winners of the ‘Bull Calf Weight Gain Competition’ in the recent Kirwee Rugby Club contest.

The calf they raised weighed in at a whopping 170 kilograms and at only three months old it’s gain was 1.52 kg/day. This made it the winner in the best individual weight gain category and gave its rearers the major competition prize.

Second place - in the best combined weight gain category

were the calves raised by Matt and Kylie Crequer - a combined gain of 2.27kg winning them Helloworld Travel vouchers.

Third place with an equally impressive weight gain of 1.5 kg/day was the calf reared by Joe Adams.

Adams This result won Joe Terrace Downs vouchers.

The competition, which was run over a three month period, consisted of three categories; Calf weight gain, Best weight gain for heaviest pair of calves and Most hard luck story.

The winners were announced at the recent sponsors’ night, held on November 3rd with a barbecue that followed.

For Tim and Chloe it meant that they had their calf weighed monthly by judge Sam Truscott with the last weigh-in being at the end of October.

Producing such an outstanding calf weight saw Tim and Chloe walk away as the very happy winners of a Suzuki DR200 Farm Bike from Avon City Suzuki, in the event.

The Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade held their annual awards evening on Saturday, November 4th to recognise the time and effort put in to the Brigade by its members.

This year was a year to recognise milestones with it being the sixtieth anniversary of the Fire Brigade in Darfield and also the first awards’ evening under the new Fire and Emergency New Zealand (previously New Zealand Fire Service) umbrella.

The awards’ evening was due to begin at 5.30pm however a couple of callouts changed that and the evening eventually got underway, with both past and present members and guests in attendance, a littler later than planned.

The United Fire Brigade Association Service Honours were presented by Bruce Moffat, Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigades Association Executive Member.

Alan was made a Life Honorary Member of the UFBA (United Fire Brigades Association) at their recent Auckland Conference He served on the Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigades’ Association Executive from 2006-2012 and became President in 2010.

Alan was described in his citation as a long-standing participant across the entire suite of challenges managed by the UFBA and continues to be an active competitor in many of them.

Alan was elected to the UFBA Board as a Director in 2012, he served until 2014, was UFBA Vice President in 2015, and President 2016-2017.

It was reported that the 2017 Rolleston Fireworks definitely went off with a bang!

This iconic Selwyn Event, now in its second year at the new venue of Foster Park, Rolleston, suspected they would face quite a challenge from the wind which was prevalent throughout the afternoon. However the weather forecast was correct and the gale died down, allowing the amazing pyrotechnic display to music to get underway, pretty much on time.

Loud gasps, cheers and clapping from those attending said it all and was reward indeed for the hardworking organisers. “Fireworks International delivered another stunning spectacle,” they commented.

This event is organised by a group of local volunteers who give their time and energy to make sure Rolleston has an event which is eagerly anticipated and is a thoroughly enjoyable family night out.

“The crowd was up on last year’s event and was well behaved,” organisers added.

“There were plenty of family groups, rugged up warmly, having fun, watching local school groups perform on stage

and listening to quality bands.”

A magician worked on a cruise ship in the Caribbean.

The audience would be different each week, so the magician did the same tricks each week. However, there was a problem, the captain's parrot saw the shows each week and began to understand how the magician did every trick. Once he understood, he started shou ng out the secrets in the middle of the show, "Look, it's not the same hat." "Look, he is hiding the flowers under the table." "Hey, why are all the cards the Ace of Spades?"

The magician was furious but couldn't do anything, it was, aBer all, the captain's parrot.

One day, the ship had an accident and sank. The magician found himself with the parrot, adriB on a piece of wood, in the middle of the ocean. They stared at each other with hatred, but did not u@er a word. This went on for a day, then another, and another.

Finally, aBer a week, the parrot said, "Okay, I give up. Where the heck is the boat?"
