Lisa Paget was excited to win a gold award for her project at the Selwyn Awards but when she was named as the overall category winner for the Community Volunteering award, she says she was “overwhelmed andextremelyhumbled”.

She says that winning the award took the project to a whole new level and never in her wildest dreams did she imagine she wouldwinthecategory.

“I cannot stress enough,” Lisa says, “that the project could not have happened without the love, time and e orts of fellow Kiwis fromthroughoutNewZealand.”

People from as far as Pahia and Blu have taken to sewing the cuddle hearts in aid of babies and families that spend time in the Christchurch Women’s

Hospital neonatal intensive care unit(NICU).

Cuddle Hearts are made from soft cotton material, sterilised, and initially placed with both the baby and the mother then swapped around sothebabycan have the smell of its mother with it while in an incubator. The hearts provide comfort to the baby and help with bonding when the parents can’t be in the unitallthetime.

“It’s the toughest journey a family can go through,” Lisa says. “Seeing all those hearts in the incubators and cots shows they’re needed and that they’re working, giving comfort to families and that’s all that matters.”

Getting the Cuddle Hearts idea into the hospital wasn’t easy but through Lisa’s determination

and passion and the dedication of the NICU’s physiotherapist meant her dream of helping vulnerable babies could come to fruition. Lisa experienced first handhowstressfulitwastohave a baby in NICU when her two nieces, twins, spent timethere in Australia. When only one twin survived, Lisa decided then and there it would be her mission to help babies and their families when she returned to New Zealand.

“It’s been such a successful project,” Lisa says. “Cuddle

Hearts is catering for the South Island’ssickestbabies.

Feedback from families who have experienced the hearts in the NICU unit has been “tremendous”. NICU Cuddle Hearts has changed people’s lives, and for Lisa and all her volunteer helpers, that’s what makesitworthit.

NEW PUBLIC ART WORK IN ROLLESTON

SCAPE Public Art, in partnership with Selwyn District Council and the Rolleston Residents’ Association, is proud to announce a new permanent public artwork to become an iconic landmarkof the Rolleston Town Centre. The work will be in Rolleston Town Centre’s newly developed reserve, surrounded by the community enrichment of Te Ara Ātea, a sensory garden, and youth recreation space.

Arts laureate Dr Areta Wilkinson’s distinctive and

meaningful new artwork, Toro Atua, takes inspiration from ancestral rock art of Te Waipounamu. The work will take the form of 20 light-reflecting stainless-steel figures, mounted on tall, slender poles to vibrate with life, shimmering slightly in the air far above our heads. The tallest of these will be four metres high and the 20 figures will be arranged in groups throughout the reserve, leading people through the landscape and indicating areas of importance.

EMBRACING ENERGY SOLUTIONS

Electric or hybrid vehicles, charging stations, rainwater tanks, solar power systems and batteries, heat pumps and hot water heat pumps, insulation, ventilation, and double glazing could all be cover under the four main bank’s energy saver loan products, ranging from $50k interest free for five years, up to $80k for three years at 1%.

These lending options, if used

for your home, are just some of the ways you can add value in a very cost-effective way.

Keeping your home current is very important to keep the value of this main asset.

Repairs and maintenance are equally important in ensuring your home keeps up with the market.

If you have rental properties that need upgraded to the ‘Healthy Home’ standard, these

energy saver loans are ideal. A $50,000 interest free loan for five years means you could repay it in full at $193 per week.

At a time when interest rates are challenging, these loans are sure to help keep your asset at its potential value.

ROLLESTON MEN'S SHED

The Rolleston Men's Shed has been busy and recently built and delivered another dodgeballpit. The Shedis now wondering if Rolleston will be

asked to host an international dodgeball competition as there can be few school pupils whohaven'tplayedit.

Another project built and

delivered was a dual dog kennel for indoor use. This delayed the finishing of the playhouse is now nearly finished. There might be another one to take its place in the workshop when it's finished. Several desktop computers have been donated and are now being set up for men’s sheds around the South Island.

As always, the morning cuppa around 10am and a yarn are an important part of the Rolleston Men's Shed and a good time to find out more. The Shed is open on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, 9amuntilmidday.

GARDEN CLUB

Hello fellow gardeners, we are back in print, just in time for Springplanting...

Our small garden group has been very busy with interesting outings and speakers since we last wrote. Casa Rossa gardens, a film evening, speakers from Allwood Trees, and Intelligro. Speakers to come are Rachel Vogan and Elizabeth Peacock, so come along and join our non-competitive group.

Now, what should we be doing at this time of year? Preparing all gardens that are nonproductive now for late spring and summer vegetables, flowers, etc. Compost garden mixes should be dug in, and getting seeds into trays with good seed growing mixes and placed in warm places to sprout. Maybe you have been proactive through the winter and have some brassicas

ready to eat. There should be quite a lot of those spring flowers showing from your efforts during autumn, and it makes everyone feel better after the changeable weather patternwe’vehad.

Good gardening till next time. For more information, call Julie on 03 347 1311 or Anne on 033478817.

NICOLA GRIGG - OPINION PIECE

I think it’s fair to say that over the past six years, we’ve all become increasingly irritated – if not, outright concerned – at the state of the roads around Canterbury and, indeed, the rest ofthecountry.

Under Chris Luxon’s leadership, National has a vision for New Zealand to become one of the world’s leading small, advanced economies and our policies focussed on education, the economy, and lifting productivity are just the start of our plan to fulfilthatvision.

So too is our Transport for the Future plan, which will help drive prosperity and lift the standard of living for all New Zealanders. Across the country, we’re focussed on building roads and networks that will unlock land for housing growth, better Public Transport and rebuilding regions andresilience.

Our package of 13 Roads of National Significance will cost $24billionovertenyearsandall our projects are properly costed and funded. The Government will fund about $14 billion, and we’ll use private capital to get some of the work done, as happens overseas, so taxpayers do not have to pick up the full

tab.

Here in Selwyn we’ve committed to begin work investigating the Rolleston - Ashburton four-lane corridor in our first term in government. At the same time, we will get on with building a second Ashburton River bridge. Depending on what is determined by the investigations, we will make decisions around investment in the corridor, and the sequencing of it. While we have previously committed to the immediate build of this road in both the 2017 and 2020 election campaigns, unfortunately, in 2023, we find ourselves in a very, very different economic environment than we were just threeyearsago. Since 2020, a combination of out-of-control government spending, the global pandemic andsevereweathereventsinthe upper North Island have had a gravely detrimental impact on government finances and, indeed, the New Zealand economy. National is acutely aware of the importance of this project to the South Island economy but, with a price tag of about$2billion–and,withhuge and urgent storm-related works

required in other parts of the country – we have had to prioritise other works in our first terminoffice.

To be fair, Canterbury saw huge infrastructure investment following the earthquakes when, at that time, the National government chose to prioritise our region over others around the country to reboot our own economy.

So, to get our ducks in a row, I havehadourtransportteamvisit the region several times to view the road and meet with stakeholders and we all agree the job needs to be done, we just have to reinvestigate the pricing and sequencing of the build in the most responsible way that we can. If we can form the next government, we are determined to be far more carefulwithtaxpayermoneythan Labour has been to ensure the sustainable financing of worldclass, future-proofed transport infrastructure.

I see this road as a significantly important local issue, and I will continue to champion it on behalfofSelwynresidents.
