ROLLESTON MEN’S SHED

Making items from wood and metal is not all that the Rolleston Men’s Shed does. Recently a vintage item was brought in the shed and restored. The coin money box, which had a cylinder with a slot in it, was delivered in pieces. One metal stand base was missing, so after some work on the lathe, a new base was turned and fitted and then the box was reassembled. According to the inscription on a small plaque on the wooden base, the item dates to 1917.

Besides fixing chairs, a couple of writing desks have also been worked on. Another item currently taking up room in the workshop and keeping members busy is a playhouse being built.

The group’s computer section has also been helping another men’s shed to set up email accounts and a website, as well putting life back into older computers. A good yarn and the morning cuppa are still important aspects of the Rolleston Men's Shed.

SUCCESS FOR LOCAL BRASS BAND

Rolleston Brass recently celebrated success at its first National Brass Band contest held on July 5-8 in Dunedin. The band competed nationally in C Grade, after moving up a grade following wins at provincial D Grade contests.

The national contest was a great experience for the band and hugely successful. Out of nine bands, Rolleston Brass gained second place in the marching competition (this is judged on both marching and music) and drum major Brian Eckersley won the award for the best C Grade Drum Major. In the stage performances of a hymn, testpiece, and own choice piece, the band gained a credible fifth place (only half appoint behind the fourth place-getter).

Rolleston Brass formed as a

community brass band in 2019 and has evolved into a vibrant organisation with a full 33-piece brass band, an academy band, and learner groups. The band currently rehearses at Rolleston School, where its predecessor group first started as a school/ youth band over 15 years ago. The members of the main band now range from very experienced players through to juniors, who have learned to play through Rolleston Brass learner programs.

Most of the band members live in the Selwyn district with a few coming from further afield. Some of the players are current (and ex -members) of the Burnhambased New Zealand Army Band, including musical director Raynor Martin. Being the only community brass

band in the district, Rolleston Brass plays an active role in the community, performing at Rolleston Anzac services and presenting concerts at Te Ara Ātea and the Rolleston Community Centre throughout the year. The band is always particularly busy around Christmas time with several church and Council carols in the park performances, plus their own Christmas carolling out in the community several times a week during the festive season. The band also puts on precontest concerts at Rolleston school prior to competitions. Rolleston Brass is delighted with its recent success and looks forward to continuing to develop and grow as a musical force in the community.

ROLLESTON PROBUS

We had another enjoyable meeting in July. Our main speaker was Don Hayes, our local Probus Ambassador. Don also spoke to us about his time working for Haagen Das Ice Cream. He shared some slides of his time with this company, which enabled him to move around the world for several years. A bonus was that some of this delicious ice cream was there for us to sample!

We now have a produce table at our meetings and members can bring excess produce to swap.

There are several interest groups within our Probus. These include a twice monthly meeting of a craft group, a Sunday lunch group, two walking groups and a travel

group, which is in the planning stages for a trip to Oamaru in early December.

On July 27, we meet for our midwinter lunch at the Tai Tapu hotel. Our meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month in the Rolleston Community Centre from 9.45am until 12 noon. If you are interested in attending a meeting, please contact our president, Ann Barber, on 027 588503. You will be made very welcome.

SELWYN LIONS CLUB

The Selwyn Lions Club consists of 22 ladies of all ages and from all walks of life, who enjoy getting together both socially and for tasks within the Selwyn area. They get enormous satisfaction from working on projects for the community and protecting the environment. The group’s focus is on raising funds to distribute to various groups and organisations in need. Application forms for funding can be obtained by emailing secretary.selwynlc@ lionsclubsorg.nz. Recent successful projects have included a bus trip visiting

Selwyn artisans, a Show Your Support Bra Design Competition, sewing Cuddle Hearts for NICU and catering for Lincoln Senior Citizens birthday lunch. Up and coming projects include continuing to hold sewing bees for Cuddle Hearts and general catering. And as an early headsup, the group also plans to re-run their popular Gerbera Plant sales.

Selwyn Lions also supports and sponsors worthy causes such as the Lions Peace Poster and the Primary Schools Speech competition. The group meet twice a month,

with their social meeting held on the second Tuesday of the month and their business meeting, where they plan events and projects, held on the fourth Wednesday of the month.

New members are always welcome. Check out their Facebook page: Selwyn Lions Club to see some activities and videos from the group's events and outings.

If you would like to join the awesome team or learn more about membership, give Selwyn Lions Club Chair Barbara a call on 021 257 9201.

ROLLESTON & DISTRICT LIONS

Rolleston Lions finished a successful year by inducting four new members at our Change of Officers’ night in early July. This brings our membership to 40, which enables us to serve our community in many ways. Our recent board meeting became a planning meeting for the year ahead and there are many projects on the agenda,

ranging from catering for functions to car parking and enjoying nights out.

Soon we will be looking to Rolleston College for applicants for tertiary study in 2024. We will also be looking for some assistance with phone book deliveries and Toot for Tucker later this year, when the evenings are warmer. Youthful

legs are a bit lacking in our Lions Club, We are all looking forward to a successful year of fun and fellowship as we continue to honour our motto, We Serve in the Community.

The Public Exhibition of Selwyn Schools Waste Art Exhibition will take place at Te Ara Atea Rolleston on August 26-27, with the awards being presented by the Deputy Mayor of Selwyn Cllr Malcolm Lyall on Sunday at 1pm. Over 30 pieces were exhibited last year, and the judges were hugely impressed by the standard of the work. It has proved to be a very rewarding event for our artistic students. All entrants receive accolades, prizes, and exhibit their work in a relaxed environment. Their efforts are always exemplary and much enjoyed by the public who also get an insight into different views on household waste. We look forward to welcoming everyone to view some wonderful and interesting art over that weekend.

FINANCIAL ADVICE

Sometimes it can be hard to find the positives when the days are short and the nights are long, but already we are over a month past the shortest day, and that’s a positive!

There is a lot of talk in the media about interest rates reaching peak levels, but the banks are still cribbing the increases. If you are finding it too tough to meet your increased repayments, there are options like putting your lending onto interest only for a time or asking for a loan repayment holiday. It is better to

act now rather than wait until you face difficulties in meeting your commitments. Another option may be that you can use any buffer that you have built into your loan by making higher payments when the interest rates were low. Be proactive and remember communication is key. If you are thinking that you would like to upgrade your home but the market is too unpredictable right now, you could look at an energy saver, winter warmer or greener home loan. Some banks have these

loans available for insulation, solar, heat pumps, fires and double glazing or even EV or Hybrid vehicles, at 1% or even interest free. Upgrading your home to add value, or just make winter warmer makes sense! Talk to your adviser or your bank about solutions that may work for you. That’s another positive!

See advertisement in this issue for contact details.

4TH GENERATION WOODCHOPPER

Lochie Windley, (15) from Rolleston, is a fourth-generation woodchopper. Having grown up with the sport he is competing at a high level already. Lochie is a Year 11 student at St Thomas College of Canterbury and is coached by Roger Thain from Darfield.

His Mum, Raewyn , is a world champion sawyer herself and encouraged Lochie, under her watchful eye, to pick up the axe when he was ten years old. He currently trains in sport-specific disciplines at least three times a week, as well as plays rugby for the Under 16 West Melton team, which helps his general fitness. Lochie loves woodchopping, it allows him to travel around the country and internationally, and he enjoys catching up with friends that he has made. Because woodchopping is a relatively small sport, those involved in it become like part of the family.

Competitors can be competing somewhere within the South Island every weekend between

the Ellesmere Show at the start of the season and Fairlie Show at Easter, marking the end of the season.

Last weekend, Lochie competed in the New Zealand Under 21 Championship in Hokitika against the top junior Axemen from around New Zealand. He competed well, winning his heat and semi-final to compete against 20 year old Warkworth man, Jordan Thomas , in the final, finishing second in Elimination Underhand.

LABOUR CANDIDATE

Kia ora! My name is Luke Jones; Selwyn’s Labour Party candidate for this General Election.

It’s an honour to have been selected to stand as a candidate in this electorate, and to have this opportunity to share my vision for Selwyn over the next few months!

Over several years, I have involved myself, and worked hard in a variety of areas that have, in advertently, led me to stand in this election. Alongside community advocacy and volunteering efforts, which provide me with immense purpose and joy, I have worked in a small hospitality business for several years, studied at the University of Canterbury, and founded and grown my own business specialising in public and government relations.

At the age of 20, I’m pretty proud of what I’ve achieved, but I am always looking for more ways to serve my communities.

I bring a fresh and positive voice to the Selwyn campaign, which I know is essential for Selwyn to

grow positively into the future. Having lived in Rolleston, I have seen first-hand the type of growth Selwyn is experiencing and know this type of leadership is important.

The issues important to me are the same issues important to residents in Selwyn - the cost of living, education investment,

transport investment, and police investment. These areas are of vital importance in Selwyn, and only a Labour government can continue to see them implemented. We have a strong record to build upon, to support our communities today and unlock our potential for tomorrow.

NICOLA GRIGG - OPINION PIECE

With the school holidays over, local kids head into the business end of the school year. With end of year exams looming, parents across Selwyn will, rightly, be hoping their kids have been well prepared for life outside school.

Increasingly though, students across New Zealand are being let down by a system that is, frankly, alarming.

Education achievement has been in decline for the last thirty years and a recent NCEA pilot exposed just how far achievement has fallen.

Two thirds of secondary school students failed to meet minimum standards in reading, writing and maths, while 98 percent of Decile One Year 10 students failed a basic writing test. This is utterly unacceptable. A National Government will ensure every child gets a worldclass education so when they leave school, they can lead the life they want.

Our ‘Teaching the Basics Brilliantly’ policy will ensure every child has the skills they need in reading, writing, maths and science to set them up for further success.

Firstly, National would require all primary and intermediate schools to teach an hour of reading, an hour of writing and an hour on maths, on average, every day.

Children need the time to acquire knowledge, practice skills and master the basics so they stay with them for life.

Secondly, National will re-write the curriculum so it says what must be taught each year in reading, writing, maths and science to every year group in primary and intermediate schools.

Currently the curriculum is far too loose, and it does not give teachers clear guidance about what to teach, when.

Instead of being divided by years, it is grouped in ‘bands’ spanning two to three school years.

National will get rid of the three-year bands, replacing them with explicit expectations of achievement and knowledge dissemination for each year group.

We will check children have learned what the curriculum says they should have learned, and we will keep parents informed about where their kids are up to.

Thirdly, National will require schools to assess student progress in reading, writing and maths at least twice a year every year from Year 3 to Year 8, with clear reporting to parents.

This will provide something we don’t have at the moment - a reliable, national picture of how New Zealand children are progressing at primary and intermediate school.

At the moment, the first national test for numeracy and literacy is not until NCEA. Until then, we are flying almost completely blind.

Finally, National will ensure that teachers and trainee teachers spend more time learning how to teach the basics. We will also provide them with more classroom tools and lesson plans to help them teach reading, writing, maths and science.

We will set a target of 80 percent of Year 8 students being at or above the expected curriculum level for their age in reading, writing, maths and science by 2030.

We will also aim to return New Zealand students to the top 10 in the world in maths, reading and science, measured by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD’s) Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) rankings, by 2033

Labour has spent $5 billion more on education and hired 1,400 more ministry bureaucrats, and yet our children are going backwards.

After nearly six years of a Labour Government, there’s been no improvement in Year 8’s results. Only 45 percent of Year 8 kids are at the level they should be in maths and only 35 percent are at curriculum level in writing. This just cannot continue.

We won’t lift education achievement in New Zealand by continuing to do the same things that are taking us backwards.

If New Zealand is to have internationally competitive incomes and living standards, we

ROLLESTON SOFTBALL

Established in 2012, the Rolleston Softball Club has grown from strength to strength, not just in players but also in capabilities. As a club, they have a long-term strategy to build their players and coaching staff from within and provide the great sport of softball to the community.

Their foundations are built on ensuring they have a good number of younger players coming through, to build capabilities and expertise and, more crucially, provide a pathway to competitive levels of the sport. The Rolleston Softball Club Committee is a group of dedicated volunteers that invite all existing players and new players to join the club and play ball.

The Rolleston Softball Club is holding a ‘Have A Go Day’ at their grounds in mid-August, which allows people to head along and have some fun, throwing, catching and hitting the ball. All you need is a commitment to have fun and to try new things.
